NFV/SDN promises…NFV/SDN is not the “target”… … NFV/SDN is (would be) a way to reach the target

We have to transform the net……because everything is changing out there !
All Applications & Services are becoming «IP-based»
The IP Traffic constantly grows… 23% CAGR 2104-2019Cisco VNI Global IP Traffic Forecast
…and most of the IP traffic will be video 80% to 90% of global consumer traffic by 2018Cisco “The Zettabyte Era”
the value of the Internet and OTT services in Europe wasestimated in the range €2,600 - €3,700 annually per
connected consumer

Optimized for «All-IP» scenario (uniform best handling of all IP traffic, Availability, Reliability,…)Efficient TCO endless reduction (Minimize the capex&opex-per-bit)Capillar F&M UBB + «new» traffic (IoE) (Seamless connectivity; persons, companies, objects)
Optimized for QoE (Throughput, Latency, Download Time,…)Flexible Fast & «Inexpensive» new Functionalities introductionNew Revenues Enabler (Enhanced «delivery services» monetization for a multi-sided market)
Optimized for Application Building & OfferCompetitive to attract EndUsers & Developers (performant, easy to use…)Business Models Enabler (traditional service offers, vertical markets business, partnership)

Focus on: IP Transport Performance and QoEFor a «properly designed and managed» IP Networks (no bottlenecks orsystematic congestion), Performance/QoE is mainly limited by:
Network Latency (RTT) and Packet Loss (PL)
E.g.: RTT= 40ms; PLR= 0,02% ThrTCP < 20 Mbps; PLR= 0,2% ThrTCP < 6 MbpsRTT= 120ms; PLR= 0,02% ThrTCP < 6 Mbps; PLR= 0,2% ThrTCP < 2 Mbps
Bandwidth increase and QoS Functionalities are not sufficient to improve QoE(*):

…it is not sufficient to work only at the «IP basicconnectivity» level… x

TCP Acceleration CachingBoth are QoE Enhancement Functions, operating over the IP Network Layer
( no regulation restrictions expected)
Throughput Improvement Throughput Improvement &Network Capacity saving
Suitable for all TCP-based traffic – better for «bulk dataflows» (e.g. high def. Video)
Suitable for all TCP-based unencrypted traffic -better for «popular contents»
Suitable for «fixed» and «mobile»Throughput improvement depends on «where» deployed in the network
Best «in the middle» of E2E path Best «near to EndUsers» (…but depends also on CacheEfficiency…)
«Sky» Functions (caching, acceleration) improve QoE
CachingTCP Acceleration
Virtualization (…and IP Edge Function distribution) can help…

Transformation key choices
«Flat» architecture, suitable tosupport Functions distribution
«Centralized» architecture, optimizedto deploy most of the Functions in
few «big» nodes
