Why TechMentor?

S o your boss is going to letyou attend just one techconference this year. Whichone will it be? Let me

humbly suggest some good reasonsto come to TechMentor.

1. TechMentor is an independentconference. What does that meanfor you? It means you'll get unbiased,real-world information. You'll learn the good and bad aboutMicrosoft products, where they're strong and where they'revulnerable. In fact, that's the most frequent accolade I hearfrom attendees: "other conferences tend to be more aboutmarketing than information.TechMentor gives me the straightscoop."

2. TechMentor goes beyond the scope of Windows, encom-passing more aspects of your job. For our Linux/WindowsIntegration track, we've got the guy who literally wrote thebook on Linux-Windows interoperability, Jeremy Moskowitz, who will teach you how to make the two operating systemsplay nice, allowing you to get more out of your entire network. We've also got an entire track built around network infrastruc-ture, including instruction to prepare you for the CiscoCertified Network Architect (CCNA) certification.

3. TechMentor takes you in-depth with pre-conference crashcourses on crucial technologies like virtualization, SQL Serverfor admins and Group Policy troubleshooting. And here'ssomething you won't find at other Windows-based confer-ences: A course designed to save you gobs of money by learn-ing the ins and outs of Microsoft's labyrinthine licensing pro-grams and how to get the best deal.

Now then, have I made the decision any easier for you? I surehope so. But what to do if your boss is extra-generous and letsyou go to two conferences this year? Simple— go toTechMentor Orlando in the Spring and get prepped for yourMCSE certification, then come to TechMentor Las Vegas in theFall and learn scripting from the ground up. Wasn't that easy?

Best,

Keith WardChairman, TechMentor Conference

MCSE - Microsoft CertifiedSystems Engineer Track

Holding the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)title says a lot about you: it’s difficult to get, and showsthat you’ve got top-level design and administration

skills. It’s also a credential that can add sparkle to yourresume. But you have to come prepared for this rigorouscourse: The MCSE Track is aimed at administrators or systemarchitects with substantial (at least a year or more) Windows2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 experience. This intenseweek will prepare you to take the tests necessary to obtainMicrosoft’s highest-level administrative certification. Led bywell-known author and trainer Derek Melber, the course offersa sequential path through the test objectives you’ll berequired to know. Be ready with your laptop and goggles: thiscourse flies!

* TechMentor does NOT guarantee that you will obtain a certification aftercompleting the certification tracks. You will be taught the test objectives, butsuccessfully passing the tests involves more than just your training.

Introduction to MCSE Track

This session will introduce the exams in a way you’ve neverthought of before. We will go over the exam question types,as well as strategies that you can use to help you gain theupper edge on the exams. We will also go over the key studymethods that have worked for so many others that have suc-cessfully obtained their credentials.

Resource Access

Permissions have gone through a radical transformation fromWindows NT to Windows 2000/2003. Changes to how own-ership is handled (or given away) and default share permis-sions give a brand new face to how resources are handled inWindows Server 2003. If you miss the key changes with theencrypting file system (EFS), you have missed one of the bestimprovements in Windows Server 2003.

Physical and Logical Devices

The most important aspects of the physical and logicaldevices on a Windows computer are the hard drives. Withbasic disks, dynamic disks, volumes, partitions and trou-bleshooting of disks, there’s a lot of information to know.Don’t forget about handling drivers, driver signing, and driverrollback. Finally, we will cover disk quotas and disk defragmen-tation, which can help control how the disks are being utilized.

Manage Users, Computers, and Groups

There are the standard user, computer and group creationrequirements, but there is so much more. User profiles comein many flavors and control points. Roaming profiles, manda-tory profiles, controlling what’s included in a profile; the list israther long. Then, if you want a user to change from one com-puter to another, there is the File and Settings Transfer Wizard,as well as the User State Migration Tool (USMT). Other topicsinclude the new types of groups available in Active Directory, and how those groups are handled by Active Directory.

RAS and Remote Administration

This session digs deep into remote access services, coveringprotocols, security, RAS clients, and permissions. The heart ofRAS security is the RAS policy, which will be demystified soyou fully understand how to create and manage them. Otherremote access topics include remote administration featuressuch as Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance. Then there’sTerminal Services for administration, which has new namesand interfaces for Windows Server 2003. Finally, you’ll delveinto tools such as the MMC and adminpak.

Networking Concepts and Principles

This session starts off with thorough coverage of IP and sub-netting. Topics include supernetting, CIDR, and subnet mask-ing to the nth degree. Next on deck are all areas of DHCP andDHCP design criteria, including the DHCP relay agent andDHCP scope options. Then you’ll move onto NAT, demand-dialrouting and wireless connections, ending with a discussion ofnetwork monitor and IP troubleshooting.

Network Security

When it comes to network security, there are plenty ofoptions within Windows Server 2003. You’ll start off dis-cussing old friends such as SMB signing and port filtering, which are still around. Learn how to secure authentication, aswell as how to use certificates to increase network communi-cation security. The lesson then moves onto IPSec, an abyss ofsettings and options you’ll learn to decrypt. The new andimproved Windows Firewall is also on the menu.

Basic requirements include strong user authentica-tion and knowledge of the remote computers and configura-tions that erect barriers against attack. Depending on yourusers’ needs, some might require the flexibility of full IP-basedVPNs, others might need simpler Terminal Server or web-based“remote display” access. Steve will help you understand theunique security requirements for various kinds of remoteaccess and how to deploy the appropriate technology safely, tokeep your network assets and your information protected.

Hardening Systems with SP1/SP2: The Best Stuff You Don’t Use

The SP Twins—XP’s Service Pack 2 and 2003 Server’s ServicePack 1—have been out for a while, and most of us havedeployed them for their fixes and greater security. But areyou using EVERYTHING that SP1/SP2 offer? Well, unless“IPsec bypass,””auditusr.exe,””binary behaviors” and “mimesniffing” have a place in your security vocabulary, then per-haps you’re not getting the most out of your service packs! This session provides the step-by-step ways to squeeze all ofthe security juice out of the SPs!

Server and Domain Isolation: The Next Big Thing in Security

Got any unmanaged - or, worse, rogue - machines on yournetwork? Of course you do, unless you’ve consciously builtthe right technologies into your network to reduce and per-haps even eliminate them. By using Active Directory and IPsecto build an environment that requires domain membership, just like Microsoft’s own IT, you can restrict network commu-nications to domain managed machines - thereby creatingtrusted zones far more secure than other methods deployedtoday. Learn how this capability is available in Windows 2000,Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Also get a preview offuture uses of IPsec, including becoming the enforcementmechanism for Network Access Protection.
