Nelson College News
Friday, 31 July 2020
Kia ora tātou, Welcome back to Term 3. With two weeks down, we’re now back into the
thick of learning, sports, and everything else that goes on in a school the
size of Nelson College.
Sports
Last week I had the pleasure of watching the 1st XV beat Waimea Combined
on our front field. This week we host Christchurch Boys, and it will be a
great game. I’ve managed to get to our 1st XI football and watch a few
basketball games. Over the next few weeks I hope that I can get out to see
some of our junior teams playing around Nelson. Thanks to our many
coaches and managers who help make these opportunities possible.
Open Evening
Last night we opened our doors to the community to give a taste of high
school. It was great to see such a strong turn-out, and to see our young
men and staff present our school with pride.
Parent Teacher Meetings
Next week we have two parent-teacher days and evenings. These are an important opportunity for you to come
along and talk with your son’s teachers about his progress. Go online now to book meetings if you haven’t
already. If you’re not sure how to do this, please contact our Student Office and they’ll help you make a booking.
NCEA Tracking Data
On Wednesday I shared some current NCEA data with our young men. Through the year, we track our students
to check that they’re progressing towards NCEA (achievement and endorsement). The data is very positive.
Currently our data is predicting that 88% of our year 11 students will get NCEA. This compares to 77% last year at
Nelson College and just 68% at for boys at other schools nationally in 2019.
This number will fluctuate. However, it’s great to see our students and staff working hard, and this translating
into credits towards their qualification. Our young men are highly capable. With our and your support, I look
forward to seeing them achieve in NCEA this year.
Kerry Marshall MBE (1954 - 1958) - Memorial Service
Today we join with the family of Kerry Marshall to commemorate his passing in March of this year. An Old Boy of
Nelson College, Kerry made many significant contributions to our community such as serving as Mayor of both
Tasman and Nelson. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

So for all new Year 9s in 2021, Mr Townsend will be his Dean throughout his whole
time at Nelson College.
This is Mr Townsend’s 5th year teaching at Nelson College. He attended the college as a student between 1996-2001 and remains passionate about the school and students. He teaches Health and Physical Education for both Juniors and Seniors, as well as Careers Passport. Mr Townsend is part of our Boarding staff, and lives onsite with his wife and son. He’s involved in a range of extra-curricular activities and is particularly enthusiastic about sports, especially martial arts. Cross Country
Year 11 student Oliver McCormack rallied from 7th place to 4th over the final 100 metres at Saturday's Coach
Slammer's Cross Country Challenge at Saxton Field. McCormack finished the 4km race on a course used as a trial
for next year's New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country
Championships in 13:50, a second ahead of Nelson College team-mate
Josh Gill. Fenlon Bayley also closed well for 8th place in 14:32.
The Coach Slammer's race, created and directed by Nelson College
cross country coach Greg Lautenslager, was the opening meet of the
season. These athletes are training for the NZ Secondary Schools Cross
Country Championships in Hawera on 18 September.
Basketball
Christ’s College came to visit and in front of a large crowd our boys did
well. We lost game 1 by 3 points 100-103. In the second game the
following morning the boys dug deep and won by 17, 108-91 . Nice job
boys. Our Coach Sam Dempster has the team coming along nicely.
Keep a look out for information about our National Qualifying game
against Waimea College.

Congratulations to Jack Burrows, Will Samson, Flynn Mercer and
NCOB Dylan Crick for their successes at Nelson Rowing Club’s annual
prize-giving.
Jack won Best Novice; Flynn won Most Improved; and Will and Dylan

Student Sporting Achievement
A very recent student, Jarrod McKay (2014-18), has been contracted to play professional cricket for Otago Volts this season. After leaving school, Jarrod went to NMIT and studied Sports and Exercise Science, coached Cricket and Hockey at Nelson College and continued to play for the 1st XI.
While at school, as well as 1st XI Cricket, Jarrod also played 1st XV and 1st XI Hockey.

Art
Our Y10 Art Design Class has been studying typography and its
role in society, unfolding a series of creative possibilities. They’ve
been exploring a new batch of acrylic spray cans and handmade
stencils. Their designs were based around the work of English
street artist Ben Eine, with an added twist of the students’ own
culture.
From left to right: Zack Rowberry, Alexander Bainbridge, Lachlan
Hall and Callum Love. Lachlan says, “My artwork represents my
cultural heritage dating back to my great ancestors. It is inspired
by Scandinavian mythology with the wolf as the central motif”.
Music
Nelson College was very pleased and excited to be able to celebrate the hard work and perseverance of its senior
music students in a collaboration with the Nelson Cathedral with its first ever winter celebration concert. This
concert showcased the diverse range of genres the students have been working on ranging from acoustic guitar
and vocals which also featured a premiere performance of a composition from Cairo Hapakuku to solo viola and
tuba as well as a first outing for our concert band collaboration with the Nelson College for Girls. Nelson College
was thrilled to receive such fantastic support from the Cathedral with a near capacity crowd and the use of the
Cathedral and looks forward too many more events together in the future.
Maths Challenge!
Each newsletter, our Maths Dept sets a challenge:
The bells at Nelson College have malfunctioned. The A-block bell rings every 2 minutes and the B-block bell rings every 3.5 minutes.
If both bells ring together at noon. What is the first time after 1pm that both bells will ring together?
Answer at the bottom of the newsletter…

A Report from the Automotive Workshop
“I’m an automotive student in Y12. I’ve brought in an old engine from home. It’s out of a 1956 Morris Oxford. The engine has already had a rebuild but that was a good 30 years ago now. The engine itself has not run in almost 20 years. So I decided to take on the project of restoring this engine to a working order. The Oxford has been in the family from new really, it used to do lots of long distance travelling because my mother used to live far out in the country. And a lot of the time it was on gravel roads, so they welded metal plates to the oil sump to stop it from getting damaged. The main reason that we are trying to get the Oxford running again is because my mother learnt to drive in it.
The workshop that the automotive class has is well equipped in terms of tools. Although I have a corner dedicated to my work, the workshop can get a little crammed and tight for space. I also have a very nice and knowledgeable person helping me through my teardown and rebuild of the engine, his name is Ken. He allows me to take extreme caution with my engine. He helps me through with how to pull certain bits of my engine and helps me keep everything sorted. I brought the engine in to get it to a functional state so my family can continue to rebuild the classic car that is an Oxford.” Corban Radford

Boarding
At the very end of Term 2 the Boarders had their annual Mid-Winter Xmas Dinner
Big thanks to Simon Mardon for co-ordinating and managing all the preparation, Jodi Mardon for decorating the
space, boarding staff for chain sawing down the trees needed for the spit, and the boys for shooting and cooking
the kai for us all.
We farewelled Freddi Koster back to Germany, Koichiro Shinozaki to homestay and Chris Phillips back into life
away from boarding. We have appreciated her wonderful warmth and care of the Rutherford boys over the past
18 months. We also welcomed Joe Underwood back to Rutherford from Japan, Nick Withers into his new role in
boarding at Rutherford, and Jo Barnes into Barnicoat House as a supervisor for the rest of 2020.
Nelson College Prep
On the last day of Term 2, our Prep boys tramped the Cable Bay Walkway. Great views from the top and even
spotted a school of dolphins. Great way to finish the term!
