Our mission is to operate programs and services for women and children who have and are experiencing oppressions such as violence, poverty and homelessness. Nellie’s is a community based feminist organization which operates within an anti-racism anti-oppression framework. We are committed to social change through education and advocacy, to achieve social justice for all women and children.

LOCALLYOver 260,000 households in the GTA spend more than a third of their income on housing. In the City of Toronto, tens of thousands require emergency shelter with too many families struggling to pay high rent. Toronto-area police infi ltrate a sex ring that forced girls as young as 14 into prostitution. The women and girls were auctioned off like cattle on the Internet. The GTA is now the child poverty capital of Ontario: 50% of Ontario’s children in poverty live in the GTA, up from 44% in 1997.

Child poverty is racialized. Today, the GTA has about 80% of Ontario’s immigrants and visible minorities. Children of non-European heritage have made up about one half of the area’s children, and seven out of ten of the area’s children in poverty (2000).

One half of female lone parent families (46%) and recent immigrant families (44%) cannot afford their housing.

Lack of child care and affordable housing remain constants that condemn families to poverty.

PROVINCALLYUxoricide/Femicide: 20 women in Ontario were murdered last year at the hands of their intimate partner. One of them was Anne Julien-Guerin, 48, from Sudbury. Anne, mother of three children was found stabbed in her home, later died in hospital. Anne was a teacher remembered for her smile and her kindness by her students. She was an avid reader and a Scrabble champion and was always “full of life”. Her husband, Denis Guerin, 48, a laboratory technician at the hospital where Anne died of her injuries, was found by police a short distance away from the crime scene. He was charged with second-degree murder.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

The Federal Government recently cut funding to immigrant settlement services in Ontario by almost $44 million. The government also introduced a new funding model that will result in further settlement cuts in Ontario.

On March 2, the Parliament of Canada passed a motion to reverse the cuts. The Federal Budget released on March 22 was silent on the cuts, and they were not reversed due to the election call. The immigration agreement between the federal and provincial government has lapsed and has yet been renewed. Between 15% and 21% of children and youth in our schools in Ontario have a signifi cant mental health disorder which affects their daily lives. Less than a quarter of have access to or receive treatment.

NATIONALLY44.5 years is the average life span of a person who is homeless in Canada. The Government of Canada introduced a conditional residence period of two years or more for some sponsored spouses, increasing vulnerability of women and putting them at risk. The Conservative majority government is poised to cut funding to International Planned Parenthood, an organization providing reproductive health services abroad. A blatant paternalistic refusal to offer women in Africa the same rights women in Canada have. In Canada, 60% of women with disAbilities are likely to experience some form of violence in their adult lives and 39% of women with disabilities experience physical or sexual assault.

GLOBALLYGlobal Shelter Snapshot: In one day, 2,883 sheltering agencies from 24 countries around the world helped 90,602 women & 63,315 children. On this same day, these shelters were unable to accommodate 12,228 women and 8,176 children.

The global traffi cking of women and children for prostitution and indentured servitude is rampant. The global business smuggling women and children is estimated at $32 billion.

Zimbabwe Under President Robert Mugabe, rape was found to be used as a systematic weapon of war to degrade women whose families support the opposition. With Zimbabwe’s high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, rape is used as a “death sentence” from perpetrators who deliberately infect their victims.

Libya Troops loyal to leader Moammar Gadhafi have allegedly been issued Viagra in order to commit acts of rape and sexual violence against female rebel supporters.

United States Someone suffers from sexual assault every two minutes on average. Women account for 75% of the world’s work, but receive only 5% of the world’s income and own less than 1% of the world’s property. 1% of the world’s population own 40% of the world’s wealth.

Recognize inequality and encourage change.

End the abuse of power by those who infl ict suffering on those most vulnerable in our communities and around the world by demanding human rights for all women and children.

Support women and children to empower themselves, to take control over their own bodies, wages and lives.

Advocate for ending violence, poverty, homelessness and the oppression of women and children.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Motivated by the enormous challenges faced by women and children in the midst of a serious recession; all staff, volunteers, donors and funders had to work harder than ever in order to provide the support needed during these diffi cult times.

The support we received from our donors surpassed our projected targets for the year which greatly helped to compensate for the increased needs of the women and children relying on our services and a general freeze for funding from the public sector.

The Ministry of Community and Social Service -Violence against Women Program approved our request for increased staffi ng to provide transitional support to women moving out of the shelter and into the community. We also received funding from the Province to continue to improve accessibility at our Community Support and Outreach facilities.

Over the past year, much ground was covered in the planning and development of a new home for Nellie’s shelter. From consultation with residents, staff and board, to a needs assessment and a business plan, step by step, we are closer to reaching our goals for a new shelter.

We continued to advocate for policy changes on issues that directly impacts the lives of women and children including immigration, mental health, housing, childcare, training and employment opportunities.

We increased Nellie’s profi le and visibility in the Community through events including Pride, Take Back the Night, Trans March, Stolen Sisters March and Rally, Refugee Rights Day and the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day. We held our second annual Woman Abuse Awareness Month Event –Survive This!

We continued to participate on partnerships that support our values and mission including partnerships with Counterfeit Harm Reduction and various Mental Health organizations. We reached out to organizations that work with Women with DisAbilities, increasing access and aid and we are preparing the organization to increase the accessibility of our services and facilities by working on the development of Nellie’s Accessibility Position Paper and training opportunities in the upcoming year for Board, staff and volunteers.

We would like to share with all our membership, funders and friends our accomplishments over the past year through the pages of this report. We hope you fi nd the information helpful, and join with us in celebrating the great work accomplished.

We take this opportunity to thank our committed staff, board and volunteers. Our achievements over the past year were made possible because of all your passion and hard work.

I came to Nellie’s shelter seven months pregnant, with my fi ve year old daughter Jackie. We were fl eeing from the father of my two children. After months of physical, verbal, and fi nancial abuse, and two failed attempts at leaving, I made the journey to Nellie’s during the day while he was away at work. Scared that he would come home and fi nd us leaving him, I didn’t pack anything except a few items of clothes and my daughter’s favourite doll. As I walked out of our door, I looked behind at the home I was leaving and hoped with all my heart that this was the new beginning I needed for myself and for my children…

My relationship with my partner got worse after he found out I was pregnant with our second child. He didn’t want another child, saying that it would cost too much. He wanted me to have an abortion. When I refused, he started getting really abusive. He would call me names and push me around. He was never violent with our daughter, but I could tell that she was constantly scared and knew what was going on. One night I began to talk to my daughter about her new baby brother or sister she was going to have, my partner screamed at me to stop, and pulled me up and shook me by the shoulders and threw me on the fl oor. My daughter started crying and I was crying too. I slept in my daughter’s bed that night, promising her no one would hurt her, or our new baby.

As the yelling got louder and the physical abuse more frequent, I knew we had to leave. Leaving my partner and home and going to Nellie’s shelter was defi nitely the hardest decision I have ever made. But as I look back I can also see that it was also the most important decision in my life. From the time my daughter and I arrived at Nellie’s, we were treated like family. The staff was warm and welcoming and took extra care of me because I was pregnant. My daughter got involved with the children’s programs and was able to continue going to school. I was able to gain full custody of my two children, helping me feel safe and secure knowing that they would never have to witness violence or abuse from their father again.

Relocating to a shelter is never easy, especially for children. I am very grateful that my daughter was many opportunities to participate in wonderful children’s activities and programs. From arts & crafts, baking, fi eld trips around the city, and sports, my daughter always looked forward to being with the other kids and having fun. I strongly believe that my daughter is doing so well because of the love and support we’ve received at Nellie’s.

After my baby was born, I returned to school to get a better job and to be able to support myself and my children. With only a high school diploma I was unsure of where to start, but with the help of Nellie’s Staff I was able to fi nd a College program suitable for me. I completed an Accounting degree and am presently employed in my fi eld. The most important thing for me is keeping my kids safe and being able to take care of them. Knowing that I am doing just that, I feel confi dent and strong.

It has now been three years since I arrived at Nellie’s and I never imagined my life would be where it is now. Jackie is in Grade 3 and my son, Nate attends pre-school. We have our own home now and we are safe, happy, healthy, and hopeful for the future.

Imagine..you have just arrived at Nellie’s. You have a plastic bag fi lled with important papers, a toothbrush, a change of clothes... or you have suitcases still cold from travelling from one country to another, desperately waiting to fi nd a safe home in Canada... or you have nothing, just yourself and your baby. Maybe you are pregnant, maybe you are high. Maybe you are still bleeding. Maybe you are sweat-ing from the unrelenting heat, or freezing as you have no heat, no boots, no extra blankets.

You are scared. You are anxious. You have left whatever home you had. And this is your new home. You have heard good things -- the people are good here, they care. They make sure that everyone can stay, even if they are turned away from other shelters. Or you have heard not so good things -- everyone can stay, which means that you might run into people you don’t want to know, much less live with. You meet with staff in an offi ce fi lled with papers, fi les, people. There is no room for your things, if you have things. There is not much privacy. But you feel the warmth in the eyes of the woman who works here, and you feel safe. You are told to keep your valuables locked up in the offi ce, and you are brought to your room.

Nellie’s shelter is old. It carries the smells and the look of a home that has seen too much. The stairs creak. You think, “how many thousands of women and children have heard these creaks?” You walk into your room. You share this room with other women. No one has much, and yet the room is crowded. You have a bathroom to share. There is space for your children. You feel ready to fall into your bed. You have a bed.

Nellie’s is housed in a majestic old home that is 130 years old. It is not a ‘renovated’ home; something stylish or inviting. It is old, with old pipes and old an old air circulation system and old fl oors and old walls. Of course, old is not bad. Old means wisdom, character and strength.

A BETTER TOMORROW

But the old house that holds the spirit of Nellie’s -- the WOMEN of Nellie’s -- simply costs too much to maintain. We cannot renovate, as it is a designated historic building. Nellie’s is bursting. We need a home that is big enough to hold the women who desperately need this safe place. In 1973 we opened with 16 beds. Now, almost every night, the 36 beds at Nellie’s are full. Almost every night, women in the community are facing continued violence, homelessness, oppression - and they are turned away when they contact Nellie’s for help.

Currently we are working hard to plan for a new home. Like everything else at Nellie’s, we assess needs according to our mission, and so it is based on the experiences and wisdom of our residents, our staff, and our board members through focus groups. Soon, we will complete a business plan. Then we will begin our campaign to fi nd the major funds that we need to build Nellie’s new shelter.

We will fi nd the resources, the focus and the will to build a space that calls out “You are safe here!” from the moment that a woman comes through the door. We have the people and we have the heart and the framework of policies and procedures, the dedication and the spirit.

If you - your daughter, your sister, your mother, your aunt - if you -arrived at Nellie’s and your fear and your anxiety were met with the open arms of a home that really could keep you safe -- well, it would change your emotional state of being. The women who stay at Nellie’s deserve nothing less than the best we have to give. And we can do this --together.

In my first term as Treasurer, I am pleased to report on the fiscal year April 1, 2010-March 31, 2011.

Despite tough economic times, the collective efforts of the Board and staff, enabled Nellie’s to end the year with an excess of revenue over expenses of $38,791, which provides us with some flexibility to respond to the unknown financial situation in the coming year.

For this fiscal year, Nellie’s relied on government funding for 72% of its total revenue. Our core government funders are the Ministry of Community and Social Services and the City of Toronto. We are grateful for their continued support.

The United Way of Greater Toronto supports the organization and in particular Nellie’s Community Support and Outreach Program. This support accounts for 10% of Nellie’s revenues.

Substantial efforts went into fundraising activities and expanding our donor base throughout the year. Our donations and fundraising revenue was 1% higher than last year and accounted for 14% of total revenues.

Our fundraising and donation increase is due to the generous efforts of all those who continue to donate to our cause. We appreciate all that you have done and hope that your support continues in the future.

This healthy financial status is a result of strong measures that were put in place by Nellie’s management for spending decreases and controls and by working hard to secure new funding sources.

The following is a percentage breakdown of total expenses: staffing costs accounted for 64% of total costs, administration costs accounted for 9.5% of total costs, client and program expenses accounted for 11.5% of total costs and property occupancy costs accounted for 8% of total costs.

As you know our Shelter is now 130 years old and repairs are now more frequent in order to maintain a safe, healthy living environment. This year entailed significant costs to building improvements which accounted for 7% of total expenses. The possibility of a deficit is always present given the rising costs of services in comparison to funding received. Your continued support however is what helps us to bridge that gap. We need your support now more than ever, to help provide the much needed services to vulnerable women and children in our community.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our hard working staff, our generous funders and donors and our wonderful volunteers for their continued support to Nellie’s.

Three ways you can work towards ending violence against women and children

• Support local campaigns for Woman Abuse Awareness in November and for Sexual Assault Awareness in May. • Confront sexism, racism, ableism, classism, homophobia, transphobia and all forms of oppression.• Participate in lobby efforts to increase funding for social assistance and access to day care.
