I. Overview As companies strive to become more competitive and profitable in a global market, they will continue to demand state-of-the-art and cost effective communications. The resulting need will require a highly integrated solution of products, applications, and services to create the connected enterprise. For many enterprises, the transition to IP networks is being driven not simply by the possibility of reducing costs, but in large measure by the promise of convergence — the ability to bring all of an organization’s separate networks and services for data, voice, video, Internet and mobile onto a single, unified network platform. The demand for reliable partner/providers that can help enterprises move toward that goal while protecting their existing investments has created a significant opportunity in the marketplace. NEC Unified Solutions, Inc., an affiliate of NEC Corporation (NASDAQ: NIPNY), offers the broadest range of communications services and solution choices, flexible product platforms and applications, and an open migration path to protect investments. Serving mid to large enterprises and major vertical industries such as health care, education, government, manufacturing, financial and hospitality/entertainment across North America, NEC Unified Solutions delivers solutions to its customers through a business needs approach by combining elements of its enterprise communications and data infrastructure equipment, systems integration services, unified communications application and support services portfolio. NEC Unified Solutions serves its markets directly and via its national reseller channel. deliver the industry’s broadest range of proven communications solutions and allow its customers to adopt new technology at a rate that meets their individual business needs. II. A Solutions Approach to Business Needs There are many different levels of communications technology available to today’s customer. They span from traditional TDM support, to a hybrid solution, to a complete peer-to-peer IP communications deployment. NEC’s broad range of applications, services and platform solutions effectively support customers whose requirements fall at either end of the spectrum - as well as those companies that lie somewhere inbetween those two extremes. More importantly, NEC’s optimal range of technology choice helps protect existing investments, while simultaneously providing a clear migration path to future technologies. NEC understands that customers today are faced with the complexities of a changing communications technology model. Its sales engagements do not begin by offering customers a range of product options and then asking them to match the products to specific needs. To the contrary, NEC strongly builds into its culture a Total Solutions Provider (TSP) approach to customer relationships, which emphasizes the importance of understanding the customer’s specific business needs and expectations relative to the implementation of technology. To that end, customers will experience a relationship with NEC that brings to bear the best technologies and services wrapped around the strongest level of IP Communications expertise available today. III. Unifying the Converged Network At the core of the UNIVERGE® IP Communications architecture is the unique element of choice: choice in platforms, architecture, and applications designed to offer customers technology investment protection while allowing for implementation at a pace they deem appropriate for their organization. For customers that require a relatively high amount of Analog or TDM support, NEC hybrid products provide an ideal solution. Customers who deploy a hybrid solution from NEC will benefit from the immediate support for the required amount of Analog or TDM equipment. Customers also have the assurance that they can rely on NEC to easily integrate IP when and where they are ready to do so, in a cost-effective and non-intrusive manner.

For the customer who desires to initiate an IP deployment, NEC’s UNIVERGE portfolio of applications, services and products is the perfect solution. The UNIVERGE solution enables customers to address an IP architecture deployment utilizing either a hybrid-IP or server-based IP communications platform. It is designed to offer the flexibility that businesses need today and not drive customers to a single solution plan or closed architecture design. This enables IT executives to approach an IP Communications

strategy with a maximum level of options to achieve greater productivity and efficiency in the enterprise. The architecture also supports applications for vertical markets, such as health care, education, hospitality, government, manufacturing and finance.

A key element within the UNIVERGE architecture is the alignment of services to support the IP experience of the customer. Ranging from network readiness assessments to full network design, implementation and support services, like remote network management (Day 2 support), UNIVERGE services are designed to provide the necessary support to ensure the IP solution meets the customers’ requirements. The UNIVERGE architecture lays the groundwork for the industry’s evolution from traditional telephony to integrated VoIP, data and video networking solutions. IV. Solutions Portfolio Overall, traditional telecom users are still uncertain of the reliability of IP, primarily based upon their perception of network reliability. NEC has developed a solution set that allows the customer to communicate regardless of the state of the underlying network. Taking advantage of the capabilities inherent with an IP network allows NEC to enhance reliability and redundancy in ways that were not previously available from legacy telephone systems. Core to NEC Unified Solutions’ IP strategy and a differentiation point in the market is delivering a strong, robust set of services that support the customer’s planning, implementation and on-going service needs of IP communications. From the earliest stages of an IP telephony deployment - and because of NEC’s strong heritage in voice communication and extensive experience with data networking - NEC Unified Solutions,

V. Reliability, Redundancy and Survivability NEC has demonstrated its commitment toward migrating customers to a converged infrastructure. Beginning in 2000, NEC began manufacturing and marketing Hybrid IP Communications systems. Since then, NEC has shown a consistent development path, allowing customers to adopt IP at their pace. Simultaneously, NEC has developed the UNIVERGE SV7000 telephony server and the related family of products that are based upon a full IP deployment model. NEC believes that by using a two-pronged approach to the market, it provides customers with greater choices and flexibility beyond those offered by its competitors. As described in the previous sections, NEC has established a broad range of products that allow it to meet virtually any market need while providing the best possible solution based on the customer’s requirements. The following are some examples of how NEC enhances the reliability, redundancy and survivability of its solution: Redundant Access Function In an IP network, multiple paths can exist to allow communications between a terminal and the control system. When the control system determines it cannot communicate with the terminal, a changeover of the control function occurs, which allows communication via an alternate path. Likewise, in a hybrid solution, when a phone determines that it cannot gain access to any TDM resources, it will hunt to any available access point to gain access to that TDM resource.

Analog trunk support to an IP Phone For a small site equipped with 1-2 phones a customer might choose to equip their NEC IP Terminals with the PS-A adapter, which allows for a standard loop start analog line to be connected. This adapter allows the IP terminal to have survivability as the terminal can continue to provide dial tone during a power outage, or when the IP network is down. Shared Analog Trunking with Power Failure / Network Down Transfer In a remote location with a small number of stations where local trunking is desired, a customer would deploy an Analog Media Converter with Analog Media Gateway (MC/MG). This device supports two Analog Loop Start Trunks and four Analog Station ports. During normal operations, the MC/MG would be controlled by the main system, but in the case of a network loss or a power failure, the two analog trunk ports would be connected to the first two analog station ports to provide direct dial tone support to the devices connected to those ports. Should the customer have equipped the IP terminals with the PSA adapter discussed above, the IP terminals would continue to have dial tone. Individual locations requiring Survivability For larger remote sites that require the ability to continue to communicate without any service interruption, the Survivable Remote Media Gateway Controller (SR-MGC) is available. The SR-MGC converts the remote office from centralized control to standalone system operation when the IP network is lost. Local trunking is supplied by either an ISDN Media Gateway or an Analog Media Converter with Analog Media Gateway for 911 calls and PFT. Each SR-MGC will support up to 500 IP terminals Multiple Site Fail Over When a customer has multiple sites connected by NEC Fusion Call Control Signaling (FCCS), multiple system fail over capabilities are made available. When a terminal is unable to communicate with its controlling system, it will automatically re-register to an alternate system within the FCCS network. When the failure occurs, all other sites within the FCCS network are notified of this change, which automatically change the dialing pattern of the network. Productivity Tools Reliability and Survivability are the starting point for an IP communications solution, but a measurable productivity gain is required to motivate a customer to embrace any new technology. A brief example of that type of productivity gain is shown in the following examples:

• MA4000 Assistant is an application that allows the end user to change basic functions of their terminal that normally fall under the Move, Adds and Change (MAC) category. Using this tool the customer may make changes to the name displayed when called, update various button functions on the terminal, as well as other functions on the terminal.

• Unified Messaging applications provide an interface that allows the end user to

control their mailboxes from their desktop. Enhancing standard unified messaging capabilities, the control presented to the customer allows them to

© 2005 NEC Unified Solutions, Inc. Page 9

change greetings, call-transfer destination, out-dial time windows, as well as other items normally accessed via the Telephone User Interface.

• Personal Call Assistant (PCA) is an application that allows the end user to

access the corporate and personal directory and view and dial from an incoming and outgoing call log. The ability to utilize clipboard dialer is also provided, and allows a user to copy to the Windows P

®P clipboard any number from any electronic

means and paste this into the application, enabling the speaker on the phone to automatically dial the number.

• For the desktop knowledge worker, NEC offers Communications Portal, which

combines offerings from Personal Call Assistant, Business Portal, UMS, MA4000 assistant and the NEC soft phone SP30. Additionally, the NEC Video Conference & Collaboration solution is integrated as a default solution with options to plug in Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes and either Microsoft Live Comm. or Lotus Workplace.
