NSLA News Nebraska School Librarians Association Volume 6, Issue 1 Spring 2017 President’s Message With the arrival of spring, many educators often begin the countdown to the end of the school year; however, it has been my experience that school librarians begin to look forward to attending the annual Nebraska Educational Technology Association’s annual conference. This year’s NETA theme is Pearls of Wisdom. It is an opportunity to hone the technological aspect of our craft with the understanding that it is not the technology we use that engages students but rather how we teach that allows those students to be creators of their own content with the technological tools we give them. NSLA is very excited to share the library media strand features guest speaker Jennifer LaGarde, fabulously known for The Many Adventures of Library Girl. In her official 2017-2018 Board Nominations Pages 3-5 Student Profile – Abby Zimmerman Page 6 Page 7 biography found at her website, “Jennifer was awarded the ‘I Love My Librarian Award’ by the American Library Association, The Carnegie Corporation of New York and The New York Times. She was also named a 2011 "Mover and Shaker" by Library Journal. And in 2013 she was selected as one of five teacher librarians (nationally) finalists for the first ever Bammy Award for outstanding service in the area of school librarianship.” I look forward to seeing you at NETA and hope to connect with as many members as possible. IamexcitedabouttheopportunitytoservetheNebraskaSchoolLibraryAssociationbyrepresentingthemembersontheNSLABoard.Iaminterestedinprovidingstudents,teachers,andourlargercommunitieswiththenecessarytoolstobecomelifelonglearners.Schoollibrariesareinaperfectpositiontodeliverresourcesinamultitudeofformatsandprovidethenecessarysupporttoutilizethemeffectively.Ihavebeenan
educatorfor25years.IamcurrentlytheLibraryServicesDepartmentHeadforMillardPublicSchoolsinOmaha.Previously,Ihaveservedthisdistrictasaninstructionaltechnologyfacilitator,ahighschoollibrarian,andanelementarylibrarian.Ihaveopenedtwoschoollibrariesintwobrandnewbuildings.PriortoworkinginNebraska,Iwasanintermediateschoollibrarian,amiddleschoolLanguageArtsteacher,andanelementaryclassroomteacherinthird,fifthandsixthgrades.Ihavealsoopenedtwoschoollibrariesintwobrandnewbuildings.AfterparticipatingintheNxtWaveprogram,inFebruaryof2017,IreceivedmyDoctorofEducationwithanemphasisinSchoolLibrariesfromtheUniversityofNebraskaatOmaha.IalsoholdaMasterofScienceinEducationalLeadershipandInstructionfromUNO,aMasterofLibrarySciencefromKentStateUniversity,andaBachelorofScienceinEducationfromKansasStateUniversity.IamamemberofNSLA,AASL,ALA,andNETA.

IamthePreK-12schoollibrarian,districtassessmentcoordinator,andtechnologyintegrationspecialistatSheltonPublicSchools.Myfirsttwoyearsofteachingwereataone-roomschoolinBooneCounty,whereItaughtallsubjectstoKindergartenthrougheighthgrade.IhavebeenatSheltonsince2000,asanelementaryteacherandthenastheschoollibrariansince2005.Duringmytimeasschoollibrarian,Ihavetaughtjuniorhighkeyboardingandbusinessclasses,elementarymathandreadingclasses,andofcourseelementarylibraryandtechnologyskills,alongwithcollaboratingwithPreK-12classroomteachersonresearchprojects.IhaveenjoyedbeingamemberofNSLAsince2005.Mymembershiphasconnectedmewithawesomelibrariansandideasfromacrossthestate.IlookforwardtobringingmywiderangeofexperiencestotheNSLABoardofDirectorsandtheopportunitytomakenewconnectionswithlibrariansacrossthestate.Thankyouforyourvote.

Weoftenreceiveflyersinourschoolmailboxesadvertisingvariousprograms,workshops,andproducts.Everyonceinawhile,thesepiecesofpaperturnouttobelife-changing.Suchwasthecaseforhigh-schoolEnglishteacher,andcurrentUNOstudent,AbbyZimmerman,wholastyearfoundaflyeradvertisingUNO’sschoollibraryprograminhermailboxatLincolnEastHighSchool.“AftermeetingwithDr.Pascoovercoffee,IwasconvincedthatIwantedtopursuetheendorsement.”explainedZimmerman.
AfterearningwithherundergraduatedegreeinSecondaryEnglishEducationfromUNLinMayof2015,Zimmermanenteredtheteachingfield,whereshehasespeciallyenjoyedbeingapartofacommunityofeducators,andseeingstudentsgrowintheirunderstanding.“Myfavoritemomentsfromteachinghavecomefromwhenastudentwhoisstrugglingwithaskillfinallymeetsthelearningobjective.”
ZimmermaniscurrentlyinhersecondsemesterofthelibraryprogramattheUniversityofNebraskaatOmaha,havingstartedclassesinfallof2016.Whenaskedaboutherfavoritepartoftheprogramthusfar,Zimmermanexplained,“Ihavelovedreadingcurrentbooks.Ihavealsoenjoyedmyprofessors.Icantellthatallofthemarepassionateabouttheroleofschoollibrarians.”
Zimmermanpointsoutthatalthoughtheworkofbeingastudentaswellasafull-timeteacherisaheftytask,“thispassionmakesbeingateacherandastudentalittlebiteasier.”
AlthoughZimmermanisnotcurrentlyworkingasaschoollibrarian,sheisalreadyusingherlibrarycourseworkinherclassroom,mostrecentlyintheformofareal-worldresearchproject,whereinstudentshavebeengivenabudgettoresearchproductstopurchaseforthemakerspaceinEastHigh’slibrary.“Iresearchedmakerspacesformyclass,pitchedtheideatomylibrarianandshegladlyaccepted.Studentsarepracticingresearchskillsandarehighlyengagedbecausetheygettospendmoney.”
Whenaskedaboutanyadviceshewouldgivetootherlibrarystudents,Zimmermanoffered,“Makeconnectionswithyourprofessorsandclassmatesanddon’tbeafraidtoaskquestions.”
Despitetheworkofbalancingtherolesofteacherandstudent,thedecisiontopursueadegreeinschoollibraryisoneZimmermancontinuestorelish.“Ihavefoundallofthelearningexperiencestobecompletelyworthitintheend.”

TheNebraskaLibraryCommissionisinthefinalyearofitscurrentfive-yearplan.AnewplanwillbedevelopedanddeliveredtotheInstituteofMuseumandLibraryServicesbytheendofJune.Five-yearplansarearequirementforthefederalLibraryServicesandTechnologyActstateprogramgrants.Afive-yearevaluationofNebraska’scurrentfive-yearplanandprogramisunderwayandwillbecompletedbytheendofMarch.TheNebraskaLibraryCommissionboardhasappointedseveralnewmemberstotheNebraskaStateAdvisoryCouncilonLibraries.Newmembersincludetwoschoollibrarians–LoriLong(GothenburgJunior/SeniorHighSchool)andDanaMorgan(LeytonHighSchool).BethKabes(DirectorofBlended&DistanceLearning,ESUCoordinatingCouncil)isacurrentcouncilmemberandservesastheNebraskaSchoolLibrariansAssociationrepresentative.Theadvisorycouncilincludestwentymembersrepresentingalltypesoflibrariesandlibraryusers.ThecouncilservestoadvisetheLibraryCommissiononserviceneedsandtrends.BigTalkfromSmallLibrariesisanannualLibraryCommissionwebcastthathashadparticipantsfromnearlyallstatesandsomeforeigncountries.ThemostrecentBigTalkfromSmallLibrariesconferencewasheldonFebruary24.Thefocusisonsmalllibraries(alltypes).Theconferencesarerecordedandarchivedforaccessatanytime.TherecordingsareavailableviatheLibraryCommission’swebsiteathttp://nlc.nebraska.gov/ncompasslive/ncarchivelist.aspThisyear’sOneBookOneNebraskaselectionisJohnG.Neihardt’sBlackElkSpeaks.SchoolsandlibrariesareencouragedtopromotethebookandotherNeihardtbooks.TheselectionisespeciallyappropriatethisyearinrecognitionofNebraska’s150thAnniversaryCelebration.BlackElkSpeaksisamong150booksselectedasrepresentativeandnoteworthyamongNebraskarelatedbookspublishedfromNebraska’sstatehoodbeginninginMarch1,1867.MoreinformationaboutOneBookOneNebraskaandotherNebraskaCenterfortheBookactivitiesandeventscanbefoundathttp://centerforthebook.nebraska.gov/RodWagnerDirector,[email protected](office)
