We thought we’d heard it all until we heard of Mosey music - the term coined by country singer Daniel Romano, whose cowboy hat and sparkly Western shirts are tempered by his tragicomic songs about heartbreak and hard living. Dodgy genres aside, Romano’s tall tales have an air of authenticity and in his geetar-pickin’ and heavy-hearted croonin’ runs a rich seam of talent. The Cluny, June 12, £10, thecluny.com

A spirit that has seen something of a renaissance of late, here’s your chance to find out more about gin, and sample a few, as the Newcastle Gin Festival returns this month.

With a vast range of fine gins, masterclasses from experts, and live music, the three-day event offers the chance to taste your way through multiple measures of this top tipple. Hic! The CastleGate, June 11-13, £7 ginfestival.co.uk

There’s no need to journey up the A1 for your comedy kicks this summer - let the Edinburgh Festival come to you as The Stand comedy club presents Fringe preview shows on your doorstep.

Kicking off on June 9 with work-in-progress shows from topical firebrand John Scott and local favourite Gavin Webster, the capers continue with Ria Lina and Yianni (June 14), musical comedian Silky and madcap stand-up Seymour Mace (June 16) and Irish housewife Mary Bourke and Tobias Persson (July 5). The Stand June 9-July 5, £8 thestand.co.uk

BEFORE THE FRINGE

SEEGER AND SONSFeminist and activist Peggy Seeger may be classed as a folk singer, but don’t let that label fool you; regarded as something of a revolutionary, the 80 year old musician’s work sparkles with energy and wit, not to mention many broken taboos.

Songs on her recent album, Everything Changes, revolve around life, death, sex, drugs and tragedy, and prove she is getting better with age. She performs at Sage Gateshead with her sons, Neill and Calum MacColl. Sage Gateshead, June 21, £18, sagegateshead.com

The world’s biggest travelling funfair is back on the Town Moor soon, with more than 300 rides and attractions on offer.

Enjoy all the fun of the fair with a stroll down the midway and take in the sights and sounds of terrified teenagers trying not to scream on rollercoasters, taste the teeth-rotting joy of candyfloss, and try your arm at winning one of those giant teddies you have nowhere to keep? Also joining the fun this year, the Newcastle Military Show offers activities and displays June 20-21. Town Moor, June 19-27, free, hoppingsfunfairs.com

TOP TONESVocal harmony group The Overtones are every mother’s dream. Good looking, possessed of sugar-sweet vocals, and with four chart-topping albums under their belts (that’s what mums want, right?), the quintet offers a smooth soundtrack of doo-wop, R&B (the good kind) and modern pop music all packaged up in a clean cut, be-suited bundle. The boys know how to put on a show too - a must for fans of 50s sounds and uplifting harmonies. Newcastle City Hall, June 17, from £23.50 newcastlecityhall.org

WE, THE PEOPLE

TRENCH HUMOUR

Ever wondered what would happen if the common or garden voter had their way with the laws of the land?

Comic and activist Mark Thomas plans to find out at The People’s Magna Carta; part stand-up, part audience-participation, the show celebrates the 800-year-old decree and asks the audience to rip it up and start again. Expect revolutionary thoughts and, we’re willing to bet, some oddball ideas.Newcastle City Library June 24, £10 library.newcastle.gov.uk

The trials of war aren’t generally fodder for comedy, but Professor Jane Chapman’s talk on soldiers’ cartoons from WWI shines a satirical light on trench art.

Created by soldiers on the front line, the illustrations voice sqauddies’ feelings about their officers, their food and drink, their leave, military routines and medical services, leading to fascinating social observations of the time. Discovery Museum, June 27, £4 twmuseums.org.uk/discovery

A MAGIC WEEKEND

Super League’s Magic Weekend saw thousands of rugby league fans from across Europe make their way to Newcastle for two action-packed days. The total attendance for the weekend at ST James’ Park, which saw all 12 Super League teams in action, was 67,788 – a new record attendance for the Magic Weekend event, which has been held all over the UK, including at the Millenium and Etihad stadiums.Saturday’s 40,871 crowd also broke the record for the Rugby Football League’s one day attendance. As a well as big crowds in the stadium, the city saw a 37% increase in footfall across Saturday and Sunday - a new record for a major event in Newcastle, beating the previous best (27%) when Olympic football was played at St James’ Park in 2012. There was also a boost for business with an estimated visitor spend of £4.2m and licensees have reported sales up 40-50% while hotel occupancy in the city was at 90%, 25% up on same period last year. Now that’s magic! superleague.co.uk

We went to see Shields at The Cluny recently. It is a small venue and very intimate, the drinks are cheap, and it’s

great for alternative music and local bands. Much better than spending £40 on a big band.

RICH WALKER, 28, HOTEL MANAGER, NEWCASTLE

I’ve been to Baltic a few times recently; it’s got a lovely little restaurant at the top. The exhibitions are always quite unusual.

I saw one which was just underwater sea cables, I didn’t get it but I’m sure people are into that sort of thing.

WITH OUR MAN ON THE TERRACES PAUL DIXON

It is extremely difficult to explain the emotion and sense of relief after Newcastle secured their place in the

Premier League for next season. I can only liken it to being the parent of daughters, as I am, and waiting with trepidation at what indeterminate species they are going to bring home from a date, and then he turns out to be pleasant, with at least a rudimentary grasp of our, or any, language.

We shouldn’t have been in that situation anyway - needing a result on the last day of the season to avoid relegation - but if the club didn’t see it coming then they should maybe consider careers in wet fish supplies or beach ball manufacturing, anything but football.

As ever, the summer is the biggest since, well, last summer, so it’s either another opportunity to make a pig’s ear of everything, or realise that the whole purpose is to at least try and reach the pinnacle of our sport.

As with waiting for a daughter’s date, my fingers remain [email protected]

BASKETBALL

SLAM DUNK!How have you celebrated winning the BBL Play-Off Final and taking all four of British basketball’s trophies again?I’ve had a bit of time off, celebrated the win with the team and spent time with my daughters. I’m just starting to get back into the gym. You can’t wait too long to start working out again at my age (39)!

Was this year’s clean sweep different to the others (2005-06 and 2011-12)? A clean sweep is always an amazing accomplishment. This time was a little more special for me as captain for the first time. I’m older now too, and you never know how many more seasons you have.

Was it important to prove you can still win trophies? I’m out to prove myself every season because a lot of people have written me off in the past. For me to perform the way I have on the court, proves a lot. Age ain’t nothing but a number - as long as you take care of your body and stay dedicated to improving.

How much did you enjoy the BBL Play-Off final at the O2 in London? I was very happy with my performance [24 points]. Every guy played a part and contributed to the win. The experience down there was incredible. I’ve been in the UK for a long time and to play in front of such a big crowd was amazing.

Was there a pressure on you going into the Play-Off Final with another clean sweep on the line? We didn’t feel any pressure in ourselves because we know our abilities. Our goal was just to go in there and finish off the season with a win.

DEAN BAILEY MEETS THE BRITISH BASKETBALL LEAGUE’S MOST VALUABLE PLAYER - NEWCASTLE EAGLES’ CHARLES SMITH

You’ve won 20 trophies with Newcastle. Is it still exciting? It’s a great feeling every time I get my hands on a trophy; I’m smiling ear to ear in every picture. Picking up trophies is why I still play this game.

What drives your success? Our team spirit; everyone gets on well on and off the court. Every year at training camp we check our egos at the door, and we preach every day that no one guy is bigger than the team. This year every guy contributed - that was the key to our success.

How much have things changed since you joined Newcastle in 2000? The transition in the club since Paul Blake and Fab Flournoy took the reins has been amazing. Fab and I have a great respect for one another and we learn from each other every day.

What’s it like being named BBL MVP for the first time? It’s a great feeling. It proves that no matter what stage of your career you’re at, as long as you work hard you can contribute to the team and perform.

What was the most important moment of the year? The BBL Trophy final in Glasgow. We went into the game with a lot of injuries and it seemed we were down and out. We dug deep, stayed together as a group and fought hard to get the win. It proved how important team spirit is.

What can we expect next season? Our goal every year is to win silverware. There’s no greater feeling than winning, that’s why I keep playing.newcastle-eagles.com
