Public Office Hours 8.15am -

3.30pm Monday - Friday

From our Principal, John Maguire

Kia ora tatou ngā whānau,

It’s been a quick turnaround between the newsletters of this week and last, however, never a dull moment around Garin College.

This week we farewelled our Korean students who have been with us since the begin-ning of Term 3. The students were from rural areas of Korea and came as part of a group of 150 students studying all over New Zealand. The five students hosted by Garin have been in classes in Year 9 and 10 in the mornings and studying English full time in the afternoons. In this short time our visiting students have embraced so much of what Garin and Nelson has to offer. We say farewell confidently knowing they are all returning to Korea with improved English language skills and that they are richer for the opportunities they have had whilst here. I particularly thank our Director of Interna-tional Diana Murdoch and our International staff Jacqui Cleary and Denise Gerrish and all our homestay families who have cared for and hosted these students.

This week we have had our Mixed Hockey, Netball Senior A team, Invitation Netball Team, Football and Badminton players competing in the NZSSSC Winter Sports Tournament. Many of our students and teams have travelled to attend their competition events. We will look forward to hearing the progress of these teams on their return. My thanks to Justine Butler, Vanessa O’Brien, Sarah Rankin, Tracy Stock, Henry Kersten and Keryn Kercher, who have supported our teams to prepare and compete in this tour-nament.

Garin Annual Sports Awards evening is being celebrated next week on Thursday 12 September here in the College Gym. Thank you to our Sport Leaders, Tele Likiliki and Zac Lackner for their leadership of sport in the College and for the planning and preparation they have undertaken to make this an exciting celebration of sport for the College. Tele and Zac have been greatly supported and guided by our Sport Coordinator, Mrs Martine McCabe throughout the winter sports season and particularly in preparation for the evening. I look forward to joining the celebration and the opportunity to meet many of our coaches, managers, staff and parents who have worked tirelessly to support our students and make sport the success it is at Garin.

Next week we celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). Kia Kaha te reo Māori is the theme for this year’s Māori Language Week. ‘Kia Kaha’ is a well known phrase in New Zealand, meaning ‘be strong’. We often talk about language health, strength, and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'. Our Ngā Amorangi Rahania McDonald and Christian Andrew will lead activities and events for us throughout this week. We look forward to our students and staff learning, enjoying and having fun speaking Te Reo. House points will be on offer over the week for student participation and involvement in the activities organised.

Ko tōu reo, Ko tōku reo, Te tuakiri tangata, Tīhei uriuri Tīhei nakonako (Your voice, my voice. It is an expression of identity, Behold the message and the messenger).

IMPORTANT NOTICE

PARENTS OF YEAR 10 STUDENTS

Special Assessment Conditions

Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) provide extra help for approved students when they are being assessed for their NCEA so that barriers to achievement can be removed and they then have a fair opportunity to achieve credits. The support is used for internal standards and external (exams) standards. Examples of SAC are use of a writer or computer, rest breaks, Braille or enlarged papers, or reader, extra time. If your child has sensory, physical, medical and/or learning difficulties/disabilities e.g. dyslexia, dyspraxia, that might be able to be supported or reduced considerably with appropriate assistance, they may be eligible for SAC assessment. For a student to be eligible for SAC they must be working at expected levels - the use of SAC is to remove their barriers to learning. If you would like to nominate your child and you have not already discussed this please email our Special Edu-cation Needs Coordinator (SENCO) Lou Maguire, before the end of Week 7 Term 3, 6/9/2019 [email protected]

A student with possible need, will be tested and the various types of assistance can be trialled in Term 4, 2019 in preparation for Level 1 in 2020. Contact will be made with you about the needs identified for your child, and we will trial various supports that may help your child’s achievement. This helps to determine if an application can be made to NZQA for assessments, and for which SACs. If you have any cognitive assessments or medical letters of diagnosis, these could be forwarded to the SENCO in support of your child’s application. If your child is a diabetic and will need rest breaks for testing or eating during an exam SAC application is required or any other medical condition that required treatment/management within a three hour examination. If you have already submitted cognitive assessments to Lou, your student will be on the register for SAC application. If unsure whether you have submitted any cognitive assessments please email Lou Maguire. (email see above) Whilst we do the application, all decisions for Special Assessment Conditions are at the discretion of Educational Psychologists at NZQA.
