Did you know there is lots of important security information and links on the NHW web page of the Orston Parish website?..Please have a look!
Relay-car-theft - (keyless car theft)
Keyless theft is partly to blame for a sharp increase in car thefts. What is keyless theft? First, thieves buy a relay amplifier and a relay transmitter. They identify a house with a nice car parked outside. One criminal stands by the car with his transmitter, while a second waves his amplifier around the perimeter of the house. If the key is close enough the amplifier will detect its signal, amplify it and send it to the accomplice’s transmitter whereupon the thieves are able to open the car and drive away. Top Tips to avoid keyless theft – • Take standard security measures, ensuring
the car is locked and keys kept far away from doors and windows.
• Keep car keys in a metal tin to block signals. • Check your manual or speak to your dealer
to find out if your key signal can be switched off.
• Consider an aftermarket security device e.g. steering wheel lock, or a wheel clamp. Criminals may consider bypassing these as too much hassle.
• Consider purchasing a signal-blocking Faraday pouch for your car key – but test it.
• Carmakers themselves are working on software countermeasures to combat the issue of keyless theft.
PLEASE NOTE It’s very important to report crimes as otherwise rural communities may not be given the required level of resourcing they deserve.
