Sharp increase in local thefts Following on from the NHW article in the July bulletin unfortunately the rise in burglaries and thefts in our sector of Rushcliffe has continued.

However, overtures to our Neighbourhood Police Inspector via local councillor Sarah Bailey has resulted in confirmation of proactive action from the police. Officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team have stepped up patrols in our area and as a number of these crimes have happened overnight the additional police presence includes patrols during these periods.

You may have noticed signs that have been placed at the entrance to certain villages advertising police operations in the area and residents may have seen an increased police presence over recent weeks. Neighbourhood Watch have asked that the police keep us updated on any successes resulting from this initiative.

Hopefully this provides some reassurance that the problem is being taken seriously and appropriate action is in hand.

PLEASE NOTE It’s very important to report crimes as otherwise rural communities may not be given the required level of resourcing they deserve.

Orston Garden Village Proposal

The Greater Nottingham Strategic Plan has just been published and includes a radical proposal to create a new “garden village” located between Orston, Elton on the Hill and Bottesford.

Such a large development could allow for upwards of three thousand houses along with schools, shops and supporting infrastructure. The impact on our way of life would be significant. Having consulted with our community and neighbours, Orston Parish Council wish to oppose this idea and will link with Elton on the Hill to organise our opposition.

What next? 1. We have until September 14th to reply to the consultation document, and we will be preparing our case with advice from knowledgeable members of our community. However, it’s not just up to the Parish Council to act. Individual responses are essential to feedback to the planners how the community views these ideas. We aim to circulate a letter template that everyone can use to reply to the consultation document, and this will be available as a flyer and online, along

with planner contact details and addresses. The tone of the letter will be factual, evidence based and rational, essentially questioning the thinking and principals behind this idea.

2. Communication between us all will be essential, and we will share information via social media and the Bulletin. We will also use the Parish Notice Board in front of the church to post news and ideas

3. Orston Parish Council will work closely with the community at Elton on the Hill, keeping Bottesford Town Council fully informed on our progress. We will also brief Robert Jenrick MP on our collective views, and seek clarification from Rushcliffe Borough Council on their position on the proposals. If you wish for any further information, then please contact OPC via Pauline Ryan at—[email protected]

For Budding Authors….

To all Orstonians

Coping with the coronavirus?

Time on your hands? Write your autobiography!

If not, write about one (or more) of the most interesting/exciting things in your life in a few hundred words.

Everyone has been famous for five minutes, or even if not, had a great experience, e.g. the amateur footballer scoring a great goal, a golfer getting a hole-in-one and so on. In other words, the most memorable thing(s) in their lives.

A group of us think we should be able to put together a book - “Life as it used to be before the Coronavirus” or a similar title. We have experience of editing books,

writing, journalism, and so on. So we could offer assistance.

You may have seen this call for contributions in earlier issues. We now have a dozen contributions or firm offers but need more.

Lockdown continues – you have time. Paul Barnes
