What is a wampus? Where was Scottie McCreery born? What is North Carolina's official State butterfly? Answers to these questions and many more may be found in NCpedia.
NCpedia is an award-winning, free, online encyclopedia that makes finding information about famous North Carolinians, state symbols, businesses, culture, geography, government, and the history of North Carolina easy for everyone. It is managed by the State Library of North Carolina's Government & Heritage Library, part of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. You may access it online at http://ncpedia.org.
An expansion of the eNCyclopedia, the State Library’s previous online encyclopedia, NCpedia has grown rapidly since its official launch in 2010. In it, you will find articles from the North Carolina Museum of History's Tar Heel Junior Historian magazine, wildlife profiles from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and more. It is hosted by NC LIVE.
Through a partnership with the University of North Carolina Press, entries from the Encyclopedia of North Carolina and the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography are being integrated into NCpedia. This expansion is made possible through a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
New articles, videos, and images are being added daily. You will also find links to additional reputable resources for further research. Check back often and watch it grow!

NC ECHO Project Makes Local History Searchable, Accessible Online
URL: http://ncecho.org
Researchers, students, and history buffs alike may now search and access local history collections across North Carolina with a single search box thanks to a collaborative project led by the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center, NC LIVE, and the State Library of North Carolina.
NC ECHO, a new website available at http://ncecho.org, was created in order to expand access to unique local heritage collections previously scattered across a multitude of websites and North Carolina institutions. NC ECHO enables users to search across thousands of digitized and “born-digital” historic materials, including a wide variety of books, photographs, maps, family histories, state documents, newspapers and other materials from cultural heritage institutions around North Carolina, including the NC Digital Collections from State Library of North Carolina and State Archives of North Carolina. The collections available through NC ECHO include a diverse array of materials by and about the people, places and history of North Carolina.
A previous program by the same name was run out of the State Library of North Carolina from 1999-2012, with the intent to identify and digitize local cultural heritage collections. The newly revived NC ECHO program continues with the same spirit, to build connections and improve access to these collections of historic materials. Over the coming year, the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center will continue to work with cultural institutions across North Carolina to add new materials to this statewide search.
A link is provided to an archived version of the online NC ECHO institutional directory. Plans are underway to have the directory online again soon through the Department of Cultural Resources’ North Carolina Connecting to Collections website.
To use NC ECHO, you may visit http://ncecho.org, and search based historical interests, places, or people. All of the collections available through the NC ECHO search are freely available online to all users, regardless of their location.

NC State Government Web Site Archives is a joint project of the State Library and State Archives, which enables users to view North Carolina state agency web sites from 1996 to today. It allows free and open access to this information long after the sites have changed on the live web:http://webarchives.ncdcr.gov
NC LIVE Electronic Research Databases provide North Carolina residents and students with access to high quality information - searchable collections of magazine, newspaper, and journal articles, electronic books, historical materials, maps, and much more - covering a wide range of topics: http://nclive.org
Personal Economic Aid Resource Links (PEARL NC) provides links to state government health, fi nancial, career, and transportation services assisting North Carolina residents struggling to make ends meet:http://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/lss/pearl.html
Digital CollectionsOur Digital Collections provide online access to current and historical North Carolina state government information and North Caroliniana. First made available in the spring of 2008, the collections support researchers of the history and culture of North Carolina by making unique and valuable holdings of the Government & Heritage Library freely and easily accessible online.
Government & Heritage Library
The GHL’s mission is to preserve and facilitate public access to state government information; advance the study, understanding, and appreciation of North Carolina’s cultural heritage; and provide library resources and services that support the operational needs of state government agencies. The GHL is part of the State Library of North Carolina, the principal library of state government; we build the capacity of all libraries and develop and support access to specialized collections for the people of North Carolina.

Our digital collections have quickly grown to include both current and historic state publications, 20th Century census data, an archive of state agency websites dating back to 1996, and a portal to government information in collections around North Carolina.
These digital collections aid in preserving some of North Carolina’s most valuable and enduring resources.
ThemedCollections
Using popular themes, we have paired state publications with related materials from partner institutions to create digital collections that support our most sought after subject areas: genealogy, history, and culture.
State Government Collections
One of the Government & Heritage Library’s (GHL) collecting strengths is state government resources. This collection, along with our knowledgeable staff and physical proximity to government agencies, makes the GHL a destination for those in search of government publications and data.
Since 2008, the GHL has focused on providing greater access to government information by making it freely available online.
http://digital.ncdcr.gov
Genealogy The online collections dedicated to family history, include an ongoing partnership with the State Archives to make family Bible records and related documents freely searchable. They complement our nationally known genealogy research library and enable us to reach out to genealogists around the world.
Our goal is to provide greater access to uniquely documented family history resources, such as those for African Americans and other underrepresented populations.
History and Culture
The GHL’s online collections provide a jumping-off point for the armchair enthusiast and the scholarly researcher pursuing North Carolina’s diverse and rich history.
Collections include:
• Biographical information about prominent North Carolinians
• North Carolina historical vignettes for audiences from 9 to 99
• Historic photographs, postcards, maps, and other images
• Materials related to Raleigh’s founding as the state’s capital
• Historical information about African Americans in North Carolina and throughout the U.S.
• A celebration of the impact of North Carolina public libraries
• Public health collections including information on eugenics, malaria, and infl uenza
inour digital
collections.
