A few figures to consider: • Food Waste in schools is a big deal:

• With 56.5 million students in public schools

• Each Student generating between .50 & 1 pound each daily

• That is 28,250,000 to 56,500,000 pounds of waste each day

• Food waste = 35% of waste generated in public schools

• That means 9,887,500 to 19,775,000 pounds of this waste can be composted daily

• If you add Compostable Trays and other items, it would easily top 15 to 25 millions pounds a day

• Less than 10% of public schools have any composting programs

• 80 to 100 school districts in the US have proven composting is great for the schools and the students

• Several States have implemented food waste bans in schools and that list is growing

Page 70: NCCC 2020 Annual Members & Supporters Meeting · 2020 ZOOM MEETING AGENDA Welcome & Overview Gary Gittere--NCCC President NCDEQ Update Emily Burnett--Organics Recycling Specialist

But wait, it gets better:

• In the US, we generate roughly 268 Million tons of MSW a year• 67 Million tons is recycled

• 27 million tons is composted

• 140 Million tons is landfilled

• All 50 States offer some type of Recycling • Vermont being the best, Louisiana being the worst

• Check out “Greenest States” - https://wallethub.com/edu/greenest-states/11987/

• Composting / organic waste landfill bans exist in 5 states• California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont

• Municipalities across the country have also instituted some type of ban

• Including: Austin, Boulder, NY City, San Francisco, Seattle

Material Processing Methods: Facts• BioCycle Reports 4,713 operational composting facilities in the US in 2017 (BioCycle-October 2017)

• 2687 of these are yard waste processing facilities

• 613 of these process multiple organic waste streams

• 424 are processing agricultural / on farm materials

• 283 are institutional processing / on-site facilities

• 236 process wood waste / yard waste and food waste

• 240 process biosolids

• Currently 42 States have some sort of banned green/organic waste disposal

• There are over 250 Anaerobic Digesters accepting food waste (packaged / de-packaged) in the US today

• New Dehydration / Digestion systems available like BioHiTech, EcoLocap and many more

• New Mixed-Waste facilities doing waste-to-energy generation increases need for wet/dry separation and organics diversion

By removing all of the nasty, wet, smelly waste from your dumpsters you will see a noticeable difference in your dumpster area. No overloading issues, no odors, no insect infestation “or other unwanted scavengers” hanging around your dumpster.

Clean, Easy and Healthier

When food is disposed in a landfill it rots and becomes a significant source of methane - a potent greenhouse gas with 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. Landfills are a major source of human-related methane in the United States, accounting for more than 20 percent of all methane emissions

65% + of materials going to landfills are organics and could easily be diverted to other processes

Landfill Diversion will reduce the production of harmful Green House Gases

EPA has developed a program to reduce organics going to landfill by 50% by 2030:

Greatly reduces the need for new MSW Landfills, (NIMBY) issue is reduced

Compost Soils bring many benefits to our farmers, landscapers, and overall environment through carbon sequestration

Compost has the ability to help regenerate poor soils. The composting process encourages the production of beneficial micro-organisms (mainly bacteria and fungi) which in turn break down organic matter to create humus. Humus—a rich nutrient-filled material—increases the nutrient content in soils and helps soils retain moisture. Compost has also been shown to suppress plant diseases and pests, reduce or eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers, and promote higher yields of agricultural crops.

Path to Zero Waste –

• Zero Waste is more of a reality today• Municipalities are starting programs that will help them get to Zero Waste• Zero Waste can never be achieved without Organics Diversion• Millions of people have already made the commitment to change how they discard their waste• Infrastructure for getting to Zero Waste is becoming available in new regions and is growing in popularity• Companies like EcoSafe Zero Waste have programs to help waste generators move closer to the goal of

Zero Waste to Landfill
