Led by the restoration specialist and biologist who has spent the last two decades restoring these sites to their native habitat and contributing to The Toll Roads’ award-winning environ-mental programs, this year’s tours focus on the comprehensive efforts and commitment to environmental conservation and restoration, and provide an exclusive glimpse into special areas of Orange County that few have ever seen.

Upper Chiquita Canyon – April 6, 2013

Natural growth process and bird watching tour, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. This 1,182-acre conservation area located near Wagon Wheel and Coto de Caza was set aside with construction of the 241 Toll Road. A moderate to strenuous

six-mile guided walk gives partici-pants a peek at an area rich with coastal sage scrub, oak woodland, grassland and natural drainage habitats. Wildlife undercrossing tour, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This strenuous six-mile guided walk begins in the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and leads participants up through an oak woodland canyon toward the 73 Toll Road. It continues through a wildlife undercrossing where participants can look for tracks and identify wildlife using the crossing. The hike reaches a scenic point overlooking Shady Canyon, Laguna Canyon and beyond. Restoration techniques used to create sus-tainable habitat for the California gnatcatcher, a threatened songbird will be described. Come prepared to hike along steep and sometimes narrow trails. Walking sticks, sturdy

hiking shoes and binoculars are highly recommended. This tour will be led by a restoration specialist and biologist.

Bonita Creek – May 11, 2013The 21-acre Bonita Creek Chan-

nel is the main wildlife link from Upper Newport Bay to the San Joaquin Hills. It was restored with construction of the 73 Toll Road from a narrow rip-rap lined ditch and underground culverts to a viable riparian habitat rich with wildlife. This easy three-mile guided walk will be primarily on a paved path

and will include a walk along San Diego Creek to a restored saltwa-ter marsh. Bird watchers will see wetland and coastal sage scrub bird species and the hike will focus on plants and the methods used to restore the creek and riparian habitat. Binoculars are highly rec-ommended for this walk. The tour will be led by a restoration specialist and biologist.

Enrollment applications are being accepted now for Segerstrom Center’s Six Days of Broadway summer musi-cal theater camp, which returns to the Center’s campus June 24 through July 7. Students will participate in week-long intensives that feature classes in musical performance, monologue in-terpretation, audition technique, scene work, dance and more. Tony Award® nominee and Broadway/film star Erin Dilly returns to lead the program along with Broadway veterans Stephen Bun-trock, Danny Gurwin, Hank Stratton and other guest instructors.

The summer camp features two sessions based on age groups. Stu-dents ages 11 – 13 participate in the June 24 – 29 session and students 14 – 19 participate in the July 1 – 7 session (there will be no class on July 4). All classes take place at the Center’s Lawrence and Kristina Dodge Education Center, located in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Erin Dilly most recently originated the role of Mother in Broadway’s A Christmas Story and starred in the criti-cally acclaimed Encores! production of Fiorello! Other Broadway appearances include Nice Work If You Can Get It (Billie), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Truly Scrumptious) receiving a Tony Award Nomination and Outer Critics Circle Nomination for Best Actress, Into the Woods (Cinderella), The Boys from Syracuse (Luciana), Follies (Young Phyllis) and the Encores! series Babes in Arms (Billie). She recently finished filming HBO’s Too Big to Fail, opposite William Hurt. She starred

in Lifetime’s The 12 Men of Christ-mas with her best friend Kristin Che-noweth and had a featured role op-posite Meryl Streep in the film Julie and Julia. Other film/TV credits include the independent fea-ture The Diary of Preston Plummer, Everyday People (HBO), Elemen-tary (CBS), The 2-2 (CBS), Nurse Jackie (SHOW-TIME) , Law & O r d e r ( N B C ) , Canterbury’s Law (FOX), The Return of Jezebel James (FOX), All My Chil-dren (ABC), 3 Pounds (CBS), The Jury (FOX), Law & Order: CSI (NBC) and Law & Order: SVU (NBC). She starred in the national tours of South Pacific (Nellie), Beauty and the Beast (Belle) and Cameron Mackintosh’s Martin Guerre (Bertrande) receiving a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Best Actress.

Stephen R. Buntrock most recently appeared in Broadway starring op-posite Bernadette Peters as Fredrik Egerman in A Little Night Music. Earlier in the run, he was honored to play the same role opposite the show’s original leading ladies, Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury. Other starring Broadway credits include Curly in OKLAHOMA!, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, St. John in the original cast of Jane Eyre, Barrett in Titanic, Enjolras in the tenth anniversary cast of Les Misérables, Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and creating Teen Angel for the latest revival of Grease! He has toured extensively across the United States and Canada as Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Reuben in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond, originating the role of Arnaud du Thil in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Martin Guerre and The Phantom of the Opera. Buntrock has enjoyed many concert appearances as well, recently performing alongside Dame Julie Andrews in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, he has performed with the Louisville Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Cleveland Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Pensacola Symphony

Orchestra and the Los Angeles Phil-harmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

Danny Gurwin made his New York debut playing the Nurse in the off-Broadway hit Shakespeare’s R & J. Other off-Broadway credits include The Thing About Men, The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, Manhattan Theatre Club’s Captains Courageous, as well as the original companies of Kuni-Leml, A Majority of One, A New Brain at Lincoln Center and Forbidden Broadway 2001: A Spoof Odyssey. On Broadway, Gurwin made his debut as Hal in The Scarlet Pimpernel. He has portrayed Malcolm in The Full Monty in more than 500 performances. Hank Stratton has appeared as Isaac Reed on the CBS drama The Unit for three seasons, has made numerous appearances on television and in film, including recurring roles in Heroes, American Dreams and Family Law, and many guest appearances which include The Closer, Desperate Housewives, The Practice and Frasier. He has starred in many films made for television, including an adaptation of The Man Who Came to Dinner in which he starred on Broadway oppo-site Nathan Lane. He had the privilege of playing Berowne in Love’s Labour’s Lost for the Royal Shakespeare Com-pany’s Complete Works Festival. He starred in the Sam Mendes/Rob Mar-shall collaboration of Cabaret, the Tony

Award-winning production of Michael Frayn’s Copenhagen, the ground breaking off-Broadway hit Jeffrey and Lady in the Dark at Encores! His regional theatre appearances include starring roles at the Arena Stage, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre, The Alliance Theatre and the Huntington Theatre Company.

The Laguna Beach Alliance for the Arts (LBaa) announces world-renowned comedienne Rita Rudner, to deliver the keynote speech at the 7th Annual Art Star Awards to be held on Sunday, April 7 at [seven-degrees] in Laguna Beach at 6 p.m. She will bring her wit and epigrammatic one-liners to the Art Star Awards event, as the keynote speaker, where she will share stories about her successful and diverse career. During th event, awards in seven categories will be presented to organizations, businesses and individuals who have contributed and shaped the arts and culture in Laguna Beach this last year. “No doubt, this is going to be a fun evening,” remarked LBaa Chairman Wayne Baglin. “What an honor it is to have her as the keynote speaker at this year’s Art Star Awards.”

Rita Rudner is a woman of many talents and accomplishments. A co-medienne, bestselling author, award-winning television personality, screen-writer, playwright, Broadway dancer and actress, Rudner has graced the stage from Broadway and Carnegie Hall to Universal Amphitheatre and The Laguna Playhouse. She performs regularly at The Venetian in Las Vegas, where over ten years and more than 2,000 shows, she has sold over one million tickets and become the longest-running solo show in the city’s history.

Her other live performances include the original productions of Follies and Mack and Mabel on Broadway, and the world premiere of her play Tickled Pink (written with her husband and frequent collaborator Martin Bergman) last year in Laguna Beach. The couple’s first

play, Room 776, ran as part of the 2008 season at the Las Vegas Little Theatre. Rudner has appeared on HBO in Rita Rud-ner’s One Night Stand, Born to Be Mild and Married Without Children and on Showtime in Rita Rudner and Three Poten-tial Ex-Husbands. Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas was PBS’s first ever stand-up comedy special, and Rudner has been a regular guest on both Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show.

R u d n e r h a s written five books, including Naked Beneath My Clothes, Rita Rudner’s Guide to Men, Tickled Pink, Turning the Tables and I Still Have It…I Just Can’t Remember Where I Put It. Rudner lives in Las Vegas and Monarch Beach with her husband and daughter.

The Intergalactic Nemesis Book One: Target Earth Touches Down at Segerstrom Center for the Arts May 31 & June 2, 2013 in Samueli Theater; tickets go on sale May 5

Audiences attending Segerstrom Center’s Family Series presentation of The Intergalactic Nemesis Live-Action Graphic Novel can expect a one-of-a-kind whirlwind theatrical experience where radio drama and comic books collide. In this period ad-venture story set in 1933, Pulitzer-winning reporter Molly Sloan, her in-trepid assistant Timmy Mendez and a mysterious librarian named Ben Wilcott face the most serious threat Earth has ever known – an impending invasion of sludge monsters from the planet Zygon. “In 20 years of directing and producing plays, I’ve never seen an audience respond so positively,” says project creator Jason Neulander.

The storytelling method is what makes the experience of The Inter-galactic Nemesis so incredibly unique and mesmerizing. There are more than 1,000 hand-drawn, full-color, hi-resolution and intensely vivid comic book images displayed on a giant screen as three actors play all the parts and one Foley artist and one

keyboardist perform all sound effects and music .

“The Intergalactic Nem-esis is an adventure from beginning to end and something you simply must experience if you are a fan of awesome,” declares Bill Graham of Collider.com. When The Intergalactic Nemesis Live-Action Graphic Novel premiered in 2010, more than 2,000 people turned out. Shortly thereafter, it was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and CONA .

Now, in its second tour-ing season, the produc-tion arrives at 40 venues around the U.S., U.K. and Canada, including a run at the New Victory Theatre on Broadway. Audi-ences are encouraged to arrive early, as each performance includes an hour of free pre-show play activities and a reading area with an assort-ment of children’s books.

The Center’s Education and Com-munity Programs Department offers these enriching experiences to pro-

vide young people and their parents more opportunities to play together creatively. Studies show that this is critical to helping children develop their ability to think and problem solve.

The Intergalactic Nemesis Live-Action Graphic Novel is recom-mended for families and children ages seven and up. Tickets are $20 and will go on sale Sunday, May 5 at

This week, more than 100 wine producers are gathering in San Fran-cisco to celebrate America’s take on the 22 grape varieties originally made famous in France’s Rhone Valley.

The producers -- known collectively as the “Rhone Rangers” -- trace their roots to the 1980s, when a small group of California vintners dedicated to these varieties began meeting informally.

One of these winemakers was Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vine-yard. Although best known for his flamboyant and irreverent marketing campaigns, Grahm was among the first American winemakers to em-brace varietals like Syrah, Grenache,

and Mourvedre. So when the Wine Spectator dubbed Grahm “The Rhone Ranger” in 1989, the moniker stuck.

As the organization began to grow, these Rhone Rangers realized that if they worked together, they’d all ben-efit. So in the late 1990s, they formally organized and began promoting their work. The group helped catalyze -- and revive -- the planting of Rhone varieties across the country.

But they still have lots of work to do.Consider Syrah, the most popular

Rhone varietal in the United States. Marked by dark fruits, black pep-per, and meat, Syrah is wonderfully accessible, even in its youth. And whether it’s bottled on its own or blended with varieties like Grenache and Mourvedre, Syrah is capable of striking the perfect balance between power and finesse. So it works well with all sorts of food.

When it comes to sales, however, Syrah is only the fourth most popular red wine grape, trailing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. Although many California winemak-ers have spent their lives hoping Syrah would become the state’s next great varietal, sales have dropped steadily over the past few years. In

2012, Syrah sales declined by nearly 16 percent. It’s no wonder why many winemakers joke that it’s easier to get rid of a case of pneumonia than a case of Syrah.

With white wines, the Rhone Rang-ers face an even bigger challenge. The primary four varieties -- Viog-nier, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Grenache Blanc -- barely make the radar for America’s wine consumers.

This defies logic. Viognier, which is typically bottled on its own, and Marsanne and Roussanne, which are typically bottled together, are rich, tropical, and floral. So they’re perfect substitutes for Chardonnay - and of-tentimes more interesting. Grenache Blanc is bright, tart, and crisp. It’s one of my favorite varietals to pair with warm weather.

In the United States, many of the best Rhone-inspired wines come from vineyards along California’s coast -- from the Santa Ynez Valley and Paso Robles along the Central Coast, to the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey, to the Russian River Valley and Dry Creek in Sonoma.

Other top wines come from the Co-lumbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley in Washington and Oregon’s Rogue

Valley. Idaho, Michigan, and Virginia are also beginning to make their mark with these grapes.

Most of these areas are relatively cool. Although most Rhone varieties are a farmer’s dream -- reasonably easy to grow and fairly resistant to disease -- these grapes shine when grown in cooler areas, resulting in complex, vibrant, more aromatic wines. When grown in warmer cli-mates, these varieties too easily produce wines that are flabby and pruney.

The Rhone Rangers certainly have their work cut out for them. But for now, the lack of demand for Rhone varietals helps keep prices low. So check out what the Rhone Rangers have to offer. You won’t be disap-pointed.

ARE yOU THE NExT mS. SENIOR ORANGE COUNTy?

The Ms. Senior California Pageant is conducting a search to find contestants in the Orange County area for the third preliminary pageant in April 2013. The two top contestants will advance to the State Pageant to compete for the title of Ms. Senior California in August 2013.

The Pageant is open to women who have reached the “age of elegance” – 60 and up. The Pageant seeks to elevate Baby Boomer women as well as senior women, encouraging them to “stay vital and connected with life” and to be role models for their peers and younger generations. Pageant competition is based on an interview, modeling an evening gown, sharing of a philosophy of life statement, and talent.

All interested contestants can contact Orange County Director, Pam Wheeler at (949) 241-4007, or email at [email protected]. The Pageant will take place on Saturday April 6, 2013 at 1:30 PM. It will be held at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way in Mission Viejo. Deadline for applications is Wednesday, March 27, 2013.

In honoring the 7 million+ Baby Boomers and seniors in California, the Pag-eant Program is hosting eight regional preliminary pageants around California, with the Orange County pageant being the third stop. The top two finalists from each preliminary pageant will advance to the State Pageant in August for the title of Ms. Senior California. In addition, Ms. Senior California will go, all ex-penses paid, to participate in the October 2013 Ms. Senior America Pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Reigning Ms. Senior California, Elisabeth Howard from Topanga Canyon, went on to win Ms. Senior America at the 2012 Ms. Senior America Pageant. Ms. Howard is a graduate of the Juilliard School with a B.S. and M.S. in voice. She is on the vocal faculty of Pepperdine University and is the founder and director of the highly respected Vocal Power Academy in Los Angeles, estab-lished in 1980, with a network of teachers teaching the Elisabeth Howard Vocal Power Singing Method. Clients have appeared on American Idol, Star Search, TV series, film and recording, Broadway, Off-Broadway and National Tours.

All contestants are also invited to become a member of the Cameo Club and to perform in the “Silver Girls Entertainment” group. Traveling around to large and small venues alike, these Entertainers delight audiences with their talent and by sharing their joy of life. Since 2001, this entertainment group has performed at over 50 events each year.

Ms. Senior California of America, Inc. was established as a non-profit corpo-ration in 2010 and is affiliated with Ms. Senior America, Inc., founded in 1971. Eight-time Grammy winner and film/television sensation Gladys Knight and her famous soulful voice perform for the first time with Pacific Symphony during the orchestra’s next Pops concert. Having recorded more than 38 albums and enjoyed No. 1 hits on the pop, R&B and adult contem-porary charts, Knight enchants audiences with four generations of music—from her Motown days with Gladys Knight & The Pips to her four solo records. In addition to being recognized in multiple halls of fame, Knight has been a guest judge and performer on “American Idol” and a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars”; she has appeared in the Tyler Perry film, “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” and opened the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City with “This is Our Time.” For this concert, she’ll be singing favorites such as “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Every Beat of My Heart,” her James Bond single “License to Ki l l ” and “I Heard i t Through the Grapevine,” al l backed by the lush sounds of the full symphony orchestra.

Led by Maestra Eímear Noone—an ingenious conductor and com-poser with an immense passion for conducting music from all genres, including video game scores—the concert’s first half features Rus-sell Brower ’s “Leah” from Bliz-zard Entertainment’s “Diablo III,” which she originally recorded with Pacific Symphony for the game’s highly successful release in 2012; also, Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and “Hoe Down” from “Rodeo”; Bernstein’s Over-ture to “Candide”; and Debussy’s haunting “Claire de Lune.” Then, the orchestra rocks out to an ar-rangement of AC/DC’s music by Emmy-nominated composer Craig Stuart Garfinkle, called “Back in Symphonic Black.”

“Ms. Knight fully embodies her title of ‘The Empress of Soul,’ and it is a great honor to be invited to share a stage with her,” says Noone, who leads the orchestra during Knight’s performance. “Hers is a voice of the people. It belongs to us all. It puts sound to our deepest longings and heartaches,

joys and great loves. She gives everything to her people on stage, a completely selfless and vulner-able passion in her performance and then, of course, there’s the soul... Only a true, fearless artist can perform with such soul.”

The star vocalist of the evening, Knight, began singing gospel music in the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Georgia at age 4. Three years later, she won the grand prize on the television show, “Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour,” and the following year, she joined what would even-tually become Gladys Knight & The Pips. In 1995, Knight earned her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1996, Gladys Knight & The Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a year later, they were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. Knight received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual BET Awards in 2004. Last year, she ended a critically acclaimed four-year run performing nightly at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, which was hailed “the number-one show on the Strip” by the Las Vegas Review Journal.

“The first half really should be

called, ‘these are a few of my fa-vorite things,’” says Noone, “and it is with great excitement that I share these universally beloved short musical gems with the Pacific Sym-phony audience. I feel the same passion as if I were sharing them with my own family for the first time! To me, it’s vital to experience a wide range of musical styles and each one requires something different of the conductor. My background includes a thorough classical edu-cation, but first and foremost, I am a huge multi-genre music fan.

“The battle between the forces of heaven and hell is the backdrop for ‘Diablo III’ and the orchestra treated us to a richness of sonority that worked perfectly for the project,” says Noone of the video-game col-laboration. “Pacific Symphony gave us such a great performance that we had to match them with a couple of the best groups of vocal artists in Christendom! We flew all the way to Dublin to record the ‘hell choir’ or the seductively ethereal choral group Anúna and then to London for the ‘heaven choir’ or Knights Templar-esque London Voices at Abbey Road.

“Of course I’m absolutely de-lighted to come back and work with

such an incredible group of artists and exemplary human beings,” she continues. “One of the unex-pected results of our collaboration has been numerous awards and nominations, so thank you, Pacific Symphony!”

Currently, Noone is touring as the conductor for The Zelda Sym-phony, a full four-movement sym-phony created from the iconic video game “Zelda.” Noone also recorded the “Zelda Symphony 25th Anniversary CD,” which was released by Nintendo as part of its newest “Zelda” game, “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.” In 2011, she conducted and co-produced “This Is Ireland” at Royce Hall in Los Angeles for St. Patrick’s Day. Fea-turing orchestra, gospel choir, ac-tors and soloists, the show starred Irish celebrites Pierce Brosnan and Roma Downey.

LIGHT IN AfRICA – TANzANIA TRIP, PART 1

knowing what to expect and not knowing what I was doing. Although It was an amazing trip, something that you only experience once in a lifetime, I felt a calling to go - like a “I have to be here” feeling. Before I left, everyone said my life will be changed, well, they were right. What I saw and what I experienced brings me to tears every time I think about it. The children who are, by no fault of their own, brought into this world and then abandoned or orphaned. The families experienc-ing extreme poverty, sickness and depression because of the lack of having water and other basic needs.

It all started last fall; I was covering an event for this column. It was about a man - Bonner Paddock who was being celebrated at a going away party as he was competing in the Iron Man Triathlon in Hawaii. You might remember him; in 2008 he was the first person with Cerebral Palsy to climb Mount Kilimanjaro - now he was going to be the first with CP to enter the Iron Man Contest.

At this event, he introduced a lady by the name of Mama Lynn. Lynn Elliott is her name; her van just pulled up and as she came closer, she was pushing a girl in a wheel chair - Juliana - she just had surgery the day before. You see, Juliana was one of the children living at Light in Africa, a children’s home Mama Lynn founded in Tanzania, Juliana was brought here to have her legs amputated and then fitted with prosthetic legs.

Mama Lynn’s story is quite amazing, as she cares for up to 300 children who are orphaned or abandoned, have HIV/AIDS and/or are physically or mentally challenged.

I introduced myself and said I would love to have a cup of tea with her and learn about her organization. We met a few days later and talked for hours. I fell in love with her story and Light in Africa. I couldn’t believe the compassion, love and warmth coming from this amazing woman who - eleven years ago - sold everything she had and went to Africa because of a calling. There was something there - I had to get this story to the masses - so I jumped at the chance to get some press about this wonderful woman and what she’s doing for the children and people of Africa; especially about Juliana and her story of coming to America.

While speaking to Mama Lynn that day and hearing her story and all the other stories she had to tell about her journey, every one of them being more fascinating than the next, I was captivated. I suggested that she write a book. She needs to tell her story! She needs to tell her Light in Africa story. I suggested a publisher that I knew for her to contact and explore if it would be a viable opportunity for her and them. She emailed them, they called – they chatted - and after a few emails and phone calls back and forth, they agreed to help and now want her to write her story!

That’s where I come in. Mama Lynn is almost finished writing her story. I went to Light in Africa to learn everything I can about this nonprofit Light in Africa - about Tanzania - about the children and about Mama Lynn. I want to make sure I can tell this story to everyone who will listen; I want to get her the press she deserves and needs to tell the world about what she is doing and how it’s impacting the world.
