richard, who has opportunity tointroduce himself more fully in thefollowing item, was appointed on thebasis of three simple realities, acommitted personal faith in christ, aheart for God’s work in the land ofisrael and a substantial body ofmanagerial and leadershipexperience, principally in the christianand social concern charitable sectors.richard took up his post lastNovember and after traveling betweenthe uK and israel during his initial fewmonths in post will, along with his wifemargareta, be transferring full-time tothe Nazareth area this spring.

Having met when richard was workingin the anglican school in Jerusalem, and having had further time inJerusalem when richard was workingwith the Garden tomb association, they both have experience of living inisrael.

this will however still be a period ofsignificant change for them and theirfamily and i would invite your prayersfor all the practicalities involved inrelocating and establishing a newhome and new relationships; for theirchildren who will remain in the uKpursuing their respective work andstudies; and for richard as heconsolidates himself in theresponsibilities and relationships ofhis role.

in this time of change and adjustmentplease also pray for all those workingin Nazareth and the uK office as theybegin to work alongside richard inseeking to discern and progress thework and ministry of the trust.

this edition of the Newsletter alsocarries the obituaries of fourindividuals who in different ways, during a period of over 60 years, haveserved God through their respectiveinvolvements in the work in Nazareth.our former matron, leny vanKralingen, along with marcia Hughey, both offered many years of service asnurses. ruth picksley has been a loyallong-term supporter of the charity andthe recent sad death of mary has leftstaff at the Nazareth Village mourningthe loss of a much loved and valuedcolleague and friend.

each of these life stories is a quietreminder that in the midst of all of ourmany activities and decisions the keybuilding block of the work of God’sKingdom is the simple reality offaithful discipleship sustained overtime and to that end theirremembrance is another, and equallyimportant, source of encouragement.

as part of my preparations prior tomoving out to Nazareth, i have beentaking the time to do some readinginto how the trust came about, howits roots can be traced back over 175years from the formation of emms, which led to the formation of thehospital in 1861, and how theservices of the trust have developedto include the Village, the school ofNursing and serVe, and in particularthe christian commitment, faith, vision and personal sacrifice of somany staff and volunteers over theyears…so much history.

who would have envisaged over 150years ago that the obedience of ayoung doctor, Dr Vartan, respondingto the lord’s calling to meet a need inNazareth to set up what, at that time, was the only medical facility betweenJerusalem and Beirut - in an areawhere life expectancy was around 20years old - would result in theexcellent hospital we see today.

During the ensuing years, we cantrace the key milestones in the trust’shistory: the purchase of the land, thebuilding of the hospital, thefoundation of the school of Nursing, the vision of the Nazareth Village andthe beginnings of serVe Nazareth.

Yet, during those years we can alsoread of times of trials, of difficultiesand seemingly insurmountablechallenges, of personal loss, and offinancial need. the trust today istestimony as to how each trial hasbeen overcome.

i find it important to look back, toremember how we arrived and wherewe are today. in Deuteronomy 8, weread of the guidance given to thepeople of israel by the lord -guidance applicable to us asbelievers today, including those of usin the leadership of the trust.

it is guidance to remember how thelord has led the trust in the past, provided for it, and enabled eachchallenge to be overcome. so for usto look forward, we do need to drawcourage from the lord’s dealings with

us in the past, the need to remember, and to give thanks.

But in paul’s letter to the philippians,we are urged to forget what liesbehind, to strain forward to what liesahead, press on toward the goal, forthe prize of the upward call of God inchrist Jesus. the root meaning of thegoal is to ‘look into the distance’.

indeed in my role as ceo of theNazareth trust, i need to look into thedistance, to try and foresee thechallenges facing the organisation, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Beyond the specific services offeredby our different ministries we are, in2016, aware perhaps as never beforeof the strategic opportunity andchallenge of the trust’s geographicallocation. the region is in turmoil, andconflict is never far away.

our mission is not only to serve thelocal community through ourindividual services, but also to be avery real christian presence in thispart of the world, supporting andencouraging local believers andcommunities, as well as seeking toextend our reach further afield towhere there is need.

so our heart’s desire for the trust canbe summarised in one simple prayer,‘Dear lord, show us what you wantthe trust to achieve in the comingyears, and give us the strength andcourage to step out in faith, as ourancestors did’.

we are grateful to all of you who havebeen praying for us over the last 12months. we’re looking forward to theyear ahead in faith and trust that Godwill continue to lead and guide us aswe strengthen this ministry ofencouragement, prayer andengagement in the daily life of theNazareth trust.

since the last newsletter there havebeen a number of events which havehelped to achieve this, for which i amgrateful, including:

• Being trained as a guide at theNazareth Village during peaktourist season in october – one ofthe more enjoyable aspects of mywork.

• Helping to facilitate the exchangevisit by Dr curt thompson, apsychiatrist from Falls church,Virginia and founder of ‘Being

Known which helps peopleexplore the connection betweeninterpersonal neurobiology andchristian spirituality. His lecturesand seminars were well receivedby staff and students. He led anautumn study day on the topic of“the mind and christian spiritualFormation,” which was inspiringand informative.

• participation in the christmasprogrammes of the school ofNursing and Nazareth Hospital.

• collaboration with the heads ofthe pastoral care teams of theFrench and italian Hospitals toplan our involvement in the worldDay of the sick events.

• compilation of lent reflections onthe cost of Discipleship for thechristian staff of the Nazarethtrust.

there are also numerous on-goingprojects related to the spiritualministry of the Nazareth trust which icontinue to engage in. these includethe audi-Bible project, contributing tothe spiritual component of theNazareth Hospital/cure internationalpartnership agreement, andparticipating in the compassioncommittee and people.

this provided a wonderfulopportunity for fellowship and led toa greater sense of unity between thepastoral care committees of thethree Nazareth hospitals.

the teams recently got together todiscuss an idea for a joint study dayand are looking forward tocollaborating on more eventsthroughout the year.

we are also planning a prayerbreakfast with the ministers ofNazareth and the Galilee regionin may.

the aim is to share the vision of thechaplaincy and pastoral care of thetrust to inspire them to partner withus in this ministry of love andcompassion for the sick andvulnerable people in our care.

over the christmas season thechaplaincy team organisedsuccessful carol singing events in thethree hospitals in Nazareth. all werethoroughly enjoyed by the patients -especially the children in the englishand French paediatric wards whowere given gifts by santa!

a carol singing event was also heldwith the carmelite sisters in theirconvent close to the Hospital and a‘carols-by-candlelight’ service forHospital staff was held in thechapel on christmas weekend, led bythe volunteer members of thechaplaincy team.

the team led by pastor suheil hasalso been busy handing out the audi-Bibles kindly donated to the hospitalby Davar partners and the arab israeliBible society (in partnership with thechaplaincy ministry of the NazarethHospital).

these have been a real blessing anda dialysis patient from egypt wasdelighted to hear the accent of anegyptian narrator when he receivedone from pastor suheil recently.

please continue to pray for thisimportant ministry of presenceand pastoral care at the nazarethhospital!

“an introduction to the hospital andits development made us realise thatwe had become part of a specialministry - begun with sacrifice anddedication by pioneers with a visionto bring much needed medical care tothe people of Nazareth, in the nameof Jesus.

“one of our main contributions cameout of the experience of teachingenglish in china – doctors, nurses, administrators, laboratorytechnicians, all keen to practise theirenglish just by chatting, signed up tohave one-on-one englishconversations.

“it was a wonderful way to gain someinsight into the thoughts andattitudes of people - as they sharedtheir stories we learned a little aboutreal daily life in Nazareth today.

“one of the highlights of our timewas to be invited to the home of anurse who wanted us to meet hissons to encourage them in theirenglish.

we were overwhelmed by thewonderful welcome and generousarabic hospitality we received as webecame part of their family for anovernight stay.

“our ‘fame’ as native englishspeakers spread to cana about 6miles from Nazareth, where we wereinvited to give extra private englishclasses in a primary school. so in thetown where Jesus turned water intowine we attempted to turn arabic intoenglish! we had some funencouraging four classes ofenthusiastic young people in theirenglish learning through song andgames.

“another area of ministry was a twiceweekly visit to the maternity and renalunits at the Nazareth Hospital wheremassaging patients’ feet and handsgave us the opportunity to get toknow them and most were open tohaving prayer and a few accepted agift of christian literature.

“we also had the rare opportunity todress as first century villagers andhelp with the seasonal harvest ofpicking olives during our time at theNazareth Village.

“Here we imagined the young Jesusrunning and playing on the roughhillside terraces and helping with thevarious harvests and then as an adultperhaps making some of the farmimplements, tools and machinery.

“these thoughts brought home thefact that Jesus, the son of God, wasso very human. He came into ourworld, not high and mighty as a Kingin a palace but as an ordinary mandwelling amongst us, humbly sharingour humanity in all its aspects - joys, sorrows, hard work and leisure.

“as a follower of Jesus it is easy tosee israel - from overseas - throughromantic spectacles and to imagineeverything is beautiful about the land. However our experience ofvolunteering with serVe Nazarethgave us a fresh perspective on theland and its people.

“For me being part of the team atserVe Nazareth was a privilege asthey follow Jesus of Nazareth’s desireto express love in word and deed toall – we learned it can be morechallenging to do so amongst thosewho are closest to you geographicallybut further away culturally andspiritually.

“it was a privilege and a pleasure forboth of us to be part of a dedicatedand embracing fellowship of believerswho let the light of Jesus shinebrightly through their witness in themidst of a complex and uncertainland.”

after studying medicine in syria forthree years wajdi’s parents insistedhe return to his home in the GolanHeights because of the turmoil.

He decided to embark on a career innursing and applied to our school –keeping in regular touch with theDirector of the school of Nursing,Dr amal Khazin - to check where hewas on the waiting list.

He started his nursing studies inoctober 2015 but it wasn’t untilDecember that Dr amal discoveredthat he was travelling to Nazarethfrom the Golan Heights and backevery day! that’s a round trip of morethan 260 km - taking him betweentwo and three hours each way.

Dr amal asked why wajdi had notapproached her aboutaccommodation in Nazareth and hetold her he had been too shy to ask.

Fortunately Dr amal is from the sameculture as wajdi and understood thatfor young men from this culture to beshy, is to demonstrate goodcharacter, whereas in other culturesshyness could be seen as a sign ofweakness.

she was able to come to his aid andwajdi is now settled intoaccommodation at the Frenchhospital, which is close to theNazareth Hospital and the school ofNursing.

Now he has settled in wajdi is makinggood progress in his studies andpassing of his exams.

wajdi’s dedication is an inspiration toeveryone at the school of Nursingand is just one example of thedetermination that is needed topursue and achieve a career innursing.

we thank God that students likewajdi are studying in our school andwe keep praying and have faith thatthe school will see blessings for all ofits students.

this was not a vacation to an exoticspa but to complete the Jesus trail -following the path that Jesus tookwhen travelling from Nazareth to thesea of Galilee.

Bonnie and Jerry met on the 1995sponsored bike ride when they wereraising funds for the NazarethHospital through the Nazarethproject inc., which promotes achristian ministry of healing, peaceand reconciliation in the Holy land.this year’s hike was to raise funds forthe serVe programme.

this should have been their third tripto israel, but the 2005 sponsoredbike ride was switched from israel toegypt because conditions in israelthat year were not considered safe.

Jerry was due to take part in the1994 ride with his mother but fateintervened and he went elsewhere. His mum told him how worthwhilethe ride was – so he went in 1995,and the rest, as they say, is history.

Bonnie, a paediatrician inpennsylvania, and Jerry are avidbikers, having biked through anumber of american states.

Four years ago they hiked the Grandcanyon with eunice as a way ofcelebrating her 80th birthday. Bonniesaid: “we thought, ‘if mother can dothe Grand canyon, she can do theJesus trail with us.”

the group of seven flew out of NewYork to join participants fromNorthern ireland, scotland, englandand fellow americans frommississippi.

the walk was far from easy, beginning at Nazareth, which is thehighest elevation, and passingthrough Zippori National park, cana, ilaniya, Kibbutz lavi, arbel Nationalpark, mount of Beatitudes andcapernaum.

the highlight for the group was theability to swim and sail across the seaof Galilee.

carol says she became veryemotional during the boat ride on thesea. “i just thought ‘i’m here whereJesus was - on the sea of Galilee’. ifelt his presence and the tears justflowed and flowed.”

David smith of mississippi, who alongwith his wife, autumn, joined them onthe hike, apologised for his silence atthe sea saying he was too emotionalto speak.

the group will never read biblestories in the same way again, asthe land of the bible came alive tothe group through walking inJesus’ footsteps.

the pope had been diagnosed withparkinson’s Disease in 1991 and it isthought that his own illness wasimpetus for his designation ofthe day.

the world Day of the sick is observedon February 11 each year (which isalso the catholic Feast Day of ourlady of lourdes).

every third year a location is chosenand this year the pope choseNazareth as global focus of thiscelebration, noting that it was theplace where “the word became fleshand made His dwelling among us”and where Jesus began His salvificministry.

the celebration included events inother centres in the Holy land, including Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and representatives from the threeNazareth Hospitals attended aspecial symposium on thesacredness of life and end of life care.

the symposium offered a good mixof theological, medical and practicalinput on respect for the dignity of thehuman being based on his/herinherent worth as a person created inthe image of God.

this was the right of every personfrom the time of their conception untilthe time of their death, and wasparticularly relevant to the most

vulnerable members of society – theunborn, infants, people withdisabilities, and the elderly andinfirm.

the celebration of the world Day ofthe sick in Nazareth included visits bythe pontifical envoy, led byarchbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, president of the pontifical council forHealth workers, to the threeNazareth Hospitals and otherchristian health institutions inNazareth to meet and encouragestaff and pray for the sick.

a delegation visited the Hospital’sdialysis ward to pray with patientsand held a brief reception with theexecutive management team towhom they expressed their blessingsand best wishes.

a special Healing mass for the sickwas held at the Basilica of theannunciation and all sick people wereinvited to attend.

the Basilica church was filled tocapacity and as nearly everyonepresent wanted to receive a blessingor anointing with oil for prayer by thearchbishops representing the pope, this Healing service lasted almostthree hours!

please pray for this collaborationto grow and develop into ameaningful partnership inpromoting loving, compassionate and professionalhealthcare to the people ofnazareth as part of our Christianlife and witness in the townwhere Jesus grew-up!

Families walked from one station toanother; children could ride donkeys, create christmas crafts and watchour film "Growing up with Jesus”.

the King's Kids also performedinterpretive dances to christmassongs and a storyteller engagedlisteners as he told the story ofthe Nativity.

a ‘roman soldier’ announced thecarol singing time, as well as thearrival of Joseph and mary at thesheep's pen where people could havetheir picture taken with them.

people enjoyed a unique variety offoods in a warm and cosy setting. totake the experience one step closerto the first century, people exchangedtheir money for the “widow's mite,”which was used in order toparticipate in certain activities.

over the two nights there were morethan 800 visitors, mostly locals aswell as tourists. the feedback wasvery positive – ‘You made us feel thereal meaning of christmas’ was themost frequent comment.

maintaining an authentic first-centuryatmosphere throughout the tour;minimising modern intrusion fromoutside such as new houses andbuildings and keeping noisedistraction outside of the Village tohelp visitors focus on their first-centuryexperience.

we decided to combat the problemswe needed to build a wall as a barrier.the wall needed to be efficient, strong, quickly built and authentic. the fundingfor this project was made possiblethrough the generosity of the miracleof Nazareth international Foundation(mNiF).

to address the matter of authenticity,we decided the wall needed to look likethe walls of the Village houses. tileswere carefully moulded and colourmatched to the walls in the Village.

these tiles were fixed to a three metresteel frame to help to hide the modernbuildings beyond our perimeter. theplan also included an indentationdesigned into the wall to form a caveas a part of the sheepfold.

the material chosen for the tiles wascarefully chosen to provide acousticbenefits by diffusing outside noises.we were also able to purchasewireless headsets that make it easierfor our visitors to hear the guided tour- missing nothing of the experience.

“the first ray of light ushers in anew day and the fog leaves theground to reveal the desolate statethe land is in.

“is all hope gone? an answer seemsto be lost in the echoes of an axecollecting wood for the fire. the grassis too young to know, and a song inthe trees is merely a memory. andthe voice of the exhausted olive treesays, "ask the almond tree.”

“Have hope”, said a small still voice, had it been louder it would have beena whisper. such weak, yet sure, voicecould only come from the ill-lookingalmond tree.

“i might not be as strong as the olivetree," said the almond tree, "nor astall as the cypress, but i know a lotabout hope.”

“a pilgrim once told me i am special, which couldn't be farther from thetruth, at least the way i saw it. He toldme God said that He is like analmond tree.

He said 'shaked' means almond, butalso awake and watching. God iswatching over His word to perform it.

“that is why i have hope. when thesummer is hot and man is helpless inthe face of the famine, God ordersthe clouds to cry tears of mercy to fillthe valleys and wells. and when myleaves fall to the ground i am assuredthat i need to let go of past glory toreceive new one. although i have towither winter shaking in the cold, ihave hope.

“therefore, o man, do not fret at thenews of war. look not at the smoke-filled fog, the cloudy sky, or listen tothe lies of the wind sung through thecracks in your door. and when yousleep at night listening to the dropsfrom the leaky roof, remember thatyou have a roof over your head. andwhen the fog disappears in themorning, look across the valley, you'llsee my white blossoms and hear mysmall still voice say 'have hope.'”

Despite the excellent care - in bothmedical and pastoral terms - given byDr Youssif Nijem and his team, beingin hospital can be a frighteningexperience for a child and the ward, inthe oldest part of the Hospital, coulddo with some tlc of its own.

the paediatric ward is the onlysurgical and orthopaedic unit foryoungsters in the whole of thesurrounding area of Nazareth and isopen seven days a week.

Demand for the paediatric service isgrowing all the time and the Hospitalwants to be able to expand the wardand improve facilities so that it neverhas to turn a child away.

at present the inpatient ward has18 beds, and as well as outpatientconsultations the department alsoprovides emergency support andhealth education.

Dr Youssif and his team also runoutreach clinics in the west Bank andchildren referred for surgery are anadded call on the resources.

“while our young patients are with uswe want them to be as comfortableas possible – that’s pretty hard toachieve at the moment with ouroutdated accommodation, beds andfacilities.

“our patients receive excellent carebut the ward has been in need ofrepairs and updating for some timeand we have now reached the pointwhere it is urgent.

so the appeal is to raise £2 million toextend and renovate the currentfacilities, provide space for extra bedsand purchase state-of-the-artequipment,” said Dr Youssif.

the trust also wants to add a playroom, a study room and a familywelfare area for family members whooften stay with their sick children24 hours a day.

we hoped to open the new facilitiesnext year and people can help bymaking a one-off donation or settingup a regular standing order. pleasesee our donation slip on page 19.
