The interval since our last Newsletterhas been characterised, at least inpart, by that need to persevere andendure. Earlier in the year the Schoolof Nursing appeared to be withintouching distance of a resolution ofour long-standing need to identifyarrangements whereby our trainingprogramme could be recognised atdegree level.

Finalising that agreement has provedelusive and for the current academicyear there has been a need tofaithfully continue with our existingDiploma programme while patientlytrusting in God as we continue toseek the right long-termarrangement.

In June work of the Hospital wasthreatened by a significant fire in astore room which required theevacuation of several wards, twice inthe space of a few hours. Theeffective and well-disciplined mannerin which that situation was handled, with no harm coming to any of ourpatients, testified to the dedicationand professionalism of our staff, at alllevels.

That same commitment has beenseen in the fact that such a disruptiveand damaging event has notinterrupted the sustained provisionof all our clinical services.

At the Nazareth Village staff arehaving to cope with the impactof a new housing developmentimmediately adjacent to theVillage boundary. With the helpof our friends from the Miracleof Nazareth InternationalFoundation (MNIF) a shieldingwall and line of trees are beingput in place and tourcommentaries enhanced withthe use of new headsets.

Finally, the absence of a CEO has aninevitable impact on the dynamics ofdecision-making and management inany organisation.

At the time of writing I am not yet in aposition to confirm the outcome ofour appointment process. What I canhowever gladly and gratefully confirmis the faithfulness and commitmentof the leadership team in Nazarethand the staff at our UK Head Office.

Their willingness to shoulderadditional responsibilities, and towork together flexibly and patiently inthe midst of uncertainty and changehas ensured that this interim periodhas seen services sustained and workprogressed, something to which therest of this Newsletter bears cleartestimony.

In all of this we remain grateful to Godwho is endlessly faithful through allthe seasons of our life, work andministry.

“We continue to be overwhelmed bythe love and hospitality of the peopleof Nazareth and understand morefully why table fellowship formed suchan important part of Jesus’ ministry inthis part of the world (and Arab food isdelicious as many of you know)!”he said.

“We arrived in Nazareth during Easterand have now journeyed throughPentecost and beyond which hasrepresented a symbolic journey fromthe disorientation and bewildermentof entering a new cultural context, to aplace of greater clarity of vision, purpose and service by theempowering grace of the Holy Spirit!

“We are most grateful to God and allthose who have been praying for usover this period which has not beenwithout its challenges and difficulties, and at times have genuinely feltcarried by the prayers and support ofothers.”

The role of spiritual director iscontinuing to evolve and develop anda Spiritual Ministry Advisory Group isin the process of being formed toprovide guidance and advice onspiritual matters for The NazarethTrust.

“One of the first tasks of this groupwill be to develop a strategy tostrengthen and develop the Christianlife and witness across each of theentities of the Trust based onthoughtful and sensitive application ofthe Christian principles and heritage ofEMMS Nazareth,” said Frank.

“Kindly pray for the work of thisadvisory group as we commence thisimportant work and for the on-goingwork of the Nazareth Hospital, Schoolof Nursing, Nazareth Village andSERVE Nazareth programme at thischallenging time of transition for theTrust.

“Events and developments haveincluded a workshop on the spiritualdimension of palliative care and astudy day for staff and volunteers onJesus’ teaching on the vision andvalues of the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Frank also celebrates the launch of theAudi-Bible project which aims to seearound 1,000 audio-books containinginformation useful to patients at TheNazareth Hospital.

Frank said: “The Summer Camp forthe children of staff and associates ofthe Trust organised by the PastoralCare Committee and the ChildEvangelism Fellowship also took placein the School of Nursing, and had apositive spiritual impact on the lives of75 children and 25 support staff whoattended.

“For all this and much more weare profoundly grateful to Godand look forward to continuingthe journey of faith and spiritualtransformation we haveembarked on in Nazareth in theconfidence that the Lord willcontinue to lead and guide us inthe way that we are to walk as weare guided by the Holy Spirit.”

In her diary of her visit she says: “Itruly love the people I have had theopportunity to work with at thehospital - the patients I’ve connectedwith, SERVERs from other countries, who have become my close friends, and the Arab and Messianic Jewishyouth groups we had the honour ofattending.

“With God’s help I am learning andgrowing across so many dimensionsand of course along with theblessings there are also struggles. It’schallenging being in a situation with aculture that I don’t fully understandand having things arise that I didn’tplan on or necessarily want to dealwith.”

Alayna spent time with the otherSERVERS clearing a garden for TheNazareth Trust and found plenty offood for thought as she cut backovergrown shrubbery.

“Although the space was overgrownand needed a tremendous amount ofwork, I could see the beauty behind it.I had a picture of what it perhaps wasin the past, or at the very least, what itcould be in the future.

“And the parallels with my own lifedawned on me – with God as mylandscaper. He sees the beauty in thechaos before me and He shapes meto make me more beautiful.

“God keeps refining and working onus so that we may grow into theimage that He holds for each of us.He is in each of our lives and sees thebeauty that He can work in us and wehave to let this happen so that we cangrow into His vision for our lives.

“I know that no matter what path Itake, God is with me and I will make adifference in this world through Him.

“Trust God’s timing. Grow in Him.”

This ministry relies on the presenceof God found through prayer and viameditation on the Scriptures -important disciplines in the lives ofchaplaincy team members.

This team is made up of local and ex-pat volunteers and is oftencomplemented by SERVE Nazarethparticipants and teams ofinternational visitors to the HolyLand.

Recently visitors from South Africaand the United States provided aninteresting cross-cultural experiencefor patients in the maternity anddialysis wards of the NazarethHospital with their own take onministry through presence.

Their visit was marked by a service ofthanksgiving which was in addition tothe regular services on Wednesdayand Thursday mornings.

The regular services continue toprovide spiritual nourishment forthe Christian staff and volunteersat the Hospital and School ofNursing and attract more newworshippers all the time.

“The presence of God in the personand ministry of the chaplainempowers the client to healing andwholeness. In partnership with thepresence of God, chaplains bringcalm to chaos, victory over despair, comfort in loss, and sufficiency inneed.

“Chaplains practise the presence ofGod through prayer, rites, rituals, listening, the spoken word, the HolyScriptures, and acts of service.”(Paget and McCormack, )

Such is the demand for a nursingeducation that we were asked to re-open the registration; however wehad already determined our intake forthe new Academic Year.

Interestingly, many of those whorequested that registration be re-opened were young men, who oftenstruggle to gain the opportunity ofstudying nursing at a higher level.

Traditional Arab culture has not seennursing as a male occupation, yetmale nurses are an integral part of thenursing care offered both within ourHospital and the Israeli healthcaresystem at large.

Many of our male student nurseshave become role models for theirfriends and family members. The factthat many of the 114 students whograduated in 2014 were malesuggests that the stigma and barrierswhich previously existed arediminishing.

It remains the dream of Dr AmalKhazin, the Director of our School ofNursing, that it will soon be possiblefor nursing to be as accepted as aprofession for men as it is for theirfemale counterparts.

Our agreement with Haifa Universityhas come to an end and we continueto pursue a secure long-termarrangement for the provision of a BANursing Programme.

In the meantime, Professor ShoshanaRiba, Israel’s Head Nurse, has allowedus to continue to deliver the NursingDiploma, including the BA to RNTransition Programme that iscurrently in place.

Open to all, without distinction, ourNursing School is both typicallyChristian, and run in sympathy withthe values of Arab culture.

When it opened in 1924, the Schooloperated in the basement of theHospital, but since 2005 it has beenlocated in its own purpose-builtbuilding dedicated to training nursingstaff.

The Nazareth Trust School of Nursing, through unconditional service to all inthe name of Jesus, helps to giveimproved life chances to youngpeople from a minority group - andequip them with the means tosupport their families.

Improved facilities have led to raisedstandards and enabled us to acceptmore students, so we can educateeven more young people who mightotherwise struggle to find a place inIsraeli society.

Access to education is a key tool tominimise cultural and religioustensions. We seek to continue todevelop further the School's messageof successful working in a potentiallyfractured and divergent society.

In 1964, back from Nazareth, Mildredwas at the Church MissionarySociety's College in Chislehurst, andthen she sailed for Pakistan and theMissionary Hospital at Quetta, nearthe Afghanistan border.

Mildred retired to St NicholasHospital, within the close of SalisburyCathedral.

Even though it is more than 50 yearssince Mildred left the NazarethHospital, she is still remembered bythose who served alongside her.

Mme Odette Tester recalled onlyrecently: “Whatever and wheneverthe emergency, Mildred would bepresent. She was the most faithfulperson, and when she prays forsomeone, she does pray! She was ablessing to us.

How do the clinics work?At the moment, the Hospitalarranges a clinic one day a week inconsultation with local advisoryteams. Sometimes this might beadults or children, for the treatmentof arthritis or another specialisedcondition. To date we have sentspecialists including paediatricians, orthopaedic consultants, plasticsurgeons and neurologists.

The Hospital sends the medical andnursing team, along with themedications and supplies needed forthe patients. They meet the patientsin a tent in one of the villages, alwaysmaking sure to bring as much wateras possible, which is in very shortsupply in Area C.

How do the people get to knowabout it?There aren’t many ways tocommunicate. So the local Sheikh isinformed about the time andspeciality and he announces it fromthe Mosque to make sure peopleknow when the clinic is happening.

How many people come?At the start, we used to see four orfive patients each time. Now we areseeing around 20 people! The word isspreading and as a result, thedemand is increasing.

what are the needs of the people? The needs are varied and simpleproblems often become largerbecause of the inability to getimmediate care. Common needsinclude:

· Prosthetic limbs, both arms andlegs, due to injuries fromlandmines and accidents but thereis no availability of prosthetic limbsin this area or funds to purchasethem.

· Treatment and plastic surgery forburns. The way of life in this areawhere permanent structures areforbidden, involves cooking onprimus stoves and dealing withflammable materials on a dailybasis. This means that burns arecommon, especially in children.

· Treatment and plastic surgery forLeishmaniasis. This condition iscaused by parasites which createskin lesions and often seriousscarring. Spread by flies, it is mostcommonly seen in children.

what can the Nazareth Hospitaldo to supply these needs? As we observe the increasing needsof the population in this area, ourdesire is to do more to help. There isa clear need for additional clinic days.As the only healthcare provision inthis area, this is essential to make alasting difference. We would also liketo provide more specialist doctorsand medical teams as needed toserve this area.

what do we need to achieve this? There are many things that wealready provide for these clinics, interms of medication, expertise andtransport but when we see the depthof need, it is clear that we need moreresources.

Many patients need surgery inNazareth. In addition to thedifficulties of bringing them fromArea C, the expense of admissioncosts needs to be covered.

Many patients need specialisedprostheses, in order to function intheir daily lives. These life-changinglimbs cost from 10,000 – 40,000 NISper prosthesis, depending onfunction.

Support and donations will allow thiswork not only to continue, but toexpand and reach even more of thosewho have no other access tohealthcare.

We at the Nazareth Hospital believein germinating the good seed in everyperson which is LOVE - because bylove we can help and cure manypatients.

Our strategy and spiritual visionthrough the Nazareth Hospital is tocure and heal the sick as Jesus Christhealed the vulnerable, weak andneedy.

Therefore we ask individuals, institutes and associations tosupport this programme as we followthe teaching of Our Lord Jesus tohelp the vulnerable.

"There is a deep desire on the part of all who come to Nazareth to see Jesus. but for centuries, all they couldsee was dusty stones. Its construction was overseen byDr Frederick Scrimgeour not longafter the land was purchased in 1906.

But as you’d expect the last 100years have taken their toll on thebuilding, which is used primarily byour SERVE participants.

A programme of refurbishment hasnow been planned, beginning on theground floor, with a team of tenwilling volunteers from severaldifferent churches in NorthernIreland, enlisted through LIFT (Labourin Faith and Trust).

The aim is to provide a singlecommunal lounge and kitchen foreach floor with all other spaces beingconverted to either, en-suitebedrooms or family suites increasingthe capacity of the Doctors’ Houseand providing more opportunities forpeople to come and SERVE inNazareth. The project will take aroundfour years to complete.

Elizabeth McClean of LIFT said “It wasa great privilege to serve God byworking with The Nazareth Trust andSERVE Nazareth in the town whereJesus grew up.”

As you can imagine we cannot allowthese restorations to detract fromour other ministries and so we areappealing to our supporters to helpus ensure the opportunity for servingGod in Nazareth is not hindered by alack of basic, yet adequate, accommodation.

The purpose of this programme is toshare and learn from each other’sexperiences in dealing with thiscurable congenital condition.

The CURE team will be back later inthe year when Scott Reichenbach,Operations Director for the CUREclub foot programme, will visit theHospital’s weekly clinic.

It was wonderful to see SherryHerschend and many of the Miracleof Nazareth International Fund (MNIF)team at the handover of the NazarethVillage to The Nazareth Trust.

MNIF continues, through CarySummers, to provide invaluablesupport, prayer and resource ingrowing the ministry of this firstcentury museum.

Karen Rauch and Jason Allgire fromNazareth Project Inc (NPI) are busysupporting the Family ConsultancyExchange programme that wasfunded by a private donor from theUSA.

The Nazareth Board of Trustees isvery much looking forward tomeeting with the NPI Board in March, something that has been a long timein the planning.

Also, as always, Karen has beenamazing in working in partnershipwith Dr Suzy Srouji from the Hospitalin putting together this year’sapplication for the ASHA grant. Thanks also go to Jason Yakelis, whohelped Karen include our work withCURE in the application.

This year the request is for fundingtowards the paediatric wardextension and our work in the WestBank.

Dr Bishara Bisharat, Headof the Nazareth Hospital, has been invited to speak atthe Presbyterian Church ofWheaton, Chicago inOctober. The team is alsobusy arranging otherspeaking engagements tospread the word about theHospital during the trip.

Most of the Scottish DiasporaTapestry went on show last year and afew people with connections toPalestine/Israel (mostly with TabeethaSchool in Jaffa) were disappointedthat there was no mention of theregions.

It was requested that this could beincluded and two panels weredesigned. With almost every one ofour 27 stitchers had a connectionwith one of the four institutionsfeatured in the panels.

Designed by Andrew Crummy, whoalso designed the famous GreatTapestry of Scotland, which tells thewhole history of Scotland.

The tapestry will be on display inPrestoungrange, Prestonpans, in EastLothian, going on a world tour, May2016, returning to Scotland in 2017.

Kate Harris and Maha Campbell tookpart in stitching a panel of theDiaspora Tapestry from the Palestine/ Israel section.

The panel features the four maininstitutions founded in the region inthe 19th century, including, of course, the Nazareth Hospital EMMS

In the middle of the right-handsection of the panel you’ll see thefaces of Hospital founder KaloostVartan and Mary Anne Stewart, andabove that, the EMMS symbol(stitched by Kate).
