WELCOME

2012 ConferenCe & Career fair 1

O n behalf of Equal Justice Works and our partners, welcome to the Equal Justice Works 2012 Conference and Career Fair.

We have watched with great excitement as the public interest field has grown exponentially in the past 25 years. As student demand has grown, law school curricula, loan repayment assistance programs (LRAPs), and clinical and summer programs have expanded. Despite this progress, public interest law faces difficult challenges. Poverty is up; the justice gap is growing; legal aid and public defender budgets are shrinking. On top of that, the job market continues to struggle while tuition rates and the level of educational debt are growing, causing financial constraints that make it even more difficult for students to consider public interest careers.

Our conference theme this year is Navigating Your Future. It’s a reminder that you are the captain of your ship, and only you can truly determine what path your career will take. As student demand has grown, law school curricula, loan repayment assistance programs (LRAPs), and clinical and summer programs have expanded.

This year we have gathered more than 118 public interest employers from around the country who are here because they have jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities specifically for students who are passionate about pursuing public interest careers. The conference speakers are experts and public service “success stories” who are here to share valuable information designed to help you develop the skills and acquire the tools you will need to guide you to your dream career. Seize this opportunity and maximize your time here by:

• Attending the Keynote Session to hear Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor as she shares her journey to becoming the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.

• Participating in the skills workshops and taking time to meet the presenters and hear their tips for pursuing a public interest career.

• Connecting with as many employers as you can at Table Talk and learning more about their organizations.

• Stopping by the Equal Justice Works table for information about our Summer Corps, Fellowships and Educational Debt Relief programs that can help you guide your career during and after law school.

Most importantly, network with your peers, learn what they are doing on their campuses and what opportunities they may have to share.

I want to thank the faculty and staff from our member law schools who continue to work with us to spread the word about public interest opportunities. Without their help and support, our Conference and Career Fair would not be possible.

Thank you for joining us. This conference is for and about you - the next generation of public interest lawyers and leaders. When you return to your campus, we hope you will keep in touch on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn so you can stay informed of the latest developments as you navigate your way to a career in public interest law.

Sincerely,

David Stern

Demystifying the Government Hiring Process

As the largest U.S. employer, the Federal Government employs over 2 million civilian employees, of which about 85 percent work outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Despite reforms instituted in November 2010, the government’s hiring process remains daunting. Join us as we discuss the ins and outs of searching, applying and interviewing for government jobs and using www.usajobs.gov. This session will also explore how a specific agency, the Department of Justice, recruits and hires, and what opportunities exist at this and other agencies.

Gideon’s Army: Life as a Public Defender

With the law providing that the accused have a right to a lawyer, the United States criminal justice system is struggling to keep up. This session, including clips of the upcoming HBO documentary film, Gideon’s Army, examines a key constituency in the system, the public defenders. The work experience of a young public defender is exciting, challenging, and filled with daily demands rarely seen by attorneys in any other practice. Join us for a short progress screening of the award winning film, and a discussion with the film’s Director and the Executive Director of the foremost public defender training organization, the Southern Public Defender Training Center.

cOncurrent WOrkshOp sessiOns • GrOup tWOHow to Write a Federal Resume

The federal resume is unlike any other. Its average length is 3 to 5 pages, and preparing it is like writing a take-home exam. Different federal jobs require different resumes; there is no such thing as a one-fits-all resume. Federal resumes must respond to the knowledge, skills and abilities set forth in the announcement; they must also reflect the level of supervisory responsibilities, subject matter expertise, and other factors. Learn all these nuts and bolts at this session.

Once You’re in the Room: Taking Advantage of Interviews

Congratulations, you landed the interview! You’ve got your foot in the door, but now what? Strengthening Law Student Pro Bono to Increase Access to Justice

This is an important year for re-considering the role of law student pro bono as a response to the justice gap. Can we make choices that will enable pro bono to reach more clients, have broader systemic effects, fill gaps in state access to justice networks, coordinate better with courts, involve more students, and instill a deeper commitment? Can we improve quality through: supervision, reflection, training, support, faculty involvement, and deeper integration with other school initiatives? Can we reduce the burden on provider organizations and control costs through collaboration? Can we do more with technology to help law school professionals? How can we replicate the models likeliest to help close the justice gap? Through what policy reforms can we bring more resources to pro bono? All are invited to join the conversation about and with experts from the law schools and from the public interest bar.

The current administration’s major initiatives aim to transform the Veteran’s Administration into a high-performing 21st century organization that can better serve veterans, especially those returning from war in Iraq and Afghanistan. This focus, combined with an influx of federal money, offers employment opportunities in challenging and rewarding areas of law, including housing, criminal law, public benefits, employment, and military law. This informational session will include a discussion of legal issues facing veterans and military families. You will also learn about existing resources, case law, funding sources, and discuss ways students can build their skills, gain the “cultural competence” necessary to effectively work with veterans, and get involved in this major social justice issue.

The mission of Equal Justice Works is to create a just society by mobilizing the next generation of lawyers committed to equal

justice. Founded by law students in 1986, the organization has since grown to become a leader in the public interest legal field with programs that provide a sustainable pipeline of talented and trained lawyers involved in public service.

Equal Justice Works offers a continuum of programs that begin with students entering law school and extends into later careers in the profession. We provide the nation’s largest public interest law fellowship program, offering more postgraduate, full-time legal positions in public service than any other organization.

From its founding, Equal Justice Works has collaborated with the nation’s leading law schools, law firms, corporate legal departments and nonprofit organizations to provide the training and skills that enable attorneys to offer effective representation to vulnerable populations. We:

• Help law schools establish and strengthen public interest programs;

• Provide public service work experience, professional development and training for students and lawyers; and

• Build strong support in the legal profession for public service through pro bono work and financial support.

CONTINUUM OF OPPORTUNITY

The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellowship Program is one of the most productive and highly regarded national service programs in the nation. This AmeriCorps program makes a lasting impact on the communities it serves by facilitating pro bono opportunities and expanding the legal resources in low-income and underserved communities.

The Equal Justice Works Summer Corps Program is another AmeriCorps program that provides law students with the opportunity to dedicate their summer to public service at qualifying nonprofit and public interest legal organizations.

The Equal Justice Works Fellowship Program is the largest postgraduate legal fellowship program in the nation and creates partnerships among public interest lawyers, nonprofit organizations, law firm/corporate sponsors, and other donors in order to afford underrepresented populations effective access to the justice system.

The Public Defender Corps is an initiative launched in partnership with the Southern Public Defender Training Center (SPDTC) to combat the growing problem of underfunded and understaffed Public Defender Offices.

Seeking to provide help where it is most needed, Equal Justice Works is often the first responder of the legal community. Following the recent bank settlement in Illinois, we are currently launching the Illinois Foreclosure Fellowship Program, our newest initiative that will work with Fellows in Illinois to help families and other residents facing foreclosure.

Our annual Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair attracts thousands of students and lawyers exploring career options with leading nonprofit organizations as well as federal government agencies.

Equal Justice Works strives to ensure that anyone who wants to pursue a career in public interest law is not prevented from doing so by the heavy burden of student debt. Law graduates are frequently saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in debt, making it difficult to accept lower salary jobs. Equal Justice Works and our Educational Debt Relief Experts inform students and their advisors on the many educational debt relief options available, especially for those who commit their careers to public service. Through education on and advocacy for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, income-driven repayment plans, and Loan Repayment Assistance Programs, we work to help provide the public with passionate and dedicated lawyers and legal services.
