PRESIDENT’S LETTERDear Friends of the NAVC,

It is with genuine pleasure that I welcome you to the NAVC Conference 2010!

In many ways it is hard to believe another year has passed and we are making plans to be in Orlando in January. Yet that is a good thing and we are certainly looking forward to seeing you! There is no question that 2009 has been a year of challenge. Local, state, national and international concerns have been on all of our minds, and economic worries have placed us all in a state of contemplating the known and the unknown. “What ifs…” have had a dominant role in lots of planning and thinking as current and future considerations are on the table. Those of us dedicated to making the NAVC Conference the very best are no different. This has been a year of introspection and yet exciting planning too. We are very happy that you will be with us this year and we look forward to kicking 2010 off to a rewarding start with all of us together in Orlando!

Veterinarians’ resources have traditionally required steady, thoughtful stewardship to maximize returns for efforts and dollars spent. That is common ground in our profession and something we take literally and seriously at the NAVC. We want you to have the best experience possible when putting forward your hard earned money. In planning new experiences, and working with proven events, we strive to bring you the best return on your continuing education investment. We take very seriously our dedication to bringing world class continuing education to the veterinary heath care team. It is our sincere hope that these efforts on your behalf will be palpable to you in the NAVC Conference 2010.

Everyone working with the NAVC would like to make our sincere thanks known to all of our sponsors, exhibitors and attendees. Without you – this wonderful event would not happen. We have great instructors prepared to offer a world class educational experience and our thanks go to those individuals as well. I would like to personally thank our NAVC staff and board members, who work so hard behind the scenes to make the NAVC what it is. It takes many large and small steps to make the

NAVC Conference the event that it is, and “thank you” seems small indeed when expressing our gratitude. But our personal and collective excitement, anticipation and appreciation of having us all together is genuine indeed!

So keep us on your planner and make those reservations for January. We will be waiting and working to make this the best NAVC yet!

Earl M. Gaughan, DVM, DACVS

President, NAVC

NOTABLE EVENTSSATURDAY, JANUARY 16, 2010MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION KEYNOTELUNCHEON – FEATURING Dr. Stephen J. O’brien, Chief of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity

at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). He will be discussing his book “Tears of the Cheetah And Other Tales From The Genetic Frontier” The history of life on Earth is dominated by extinction events so numerous that over 99.9% of the species ever to have existed are gone forever. If animals could talk, we would ask them to

recall their own ancestries, in particular the secrets as to how they avoided almost inevitable annihilation in the face of daily assaults by predators, climactic cataclysms, deadly infections and innate diseases.

In Tears of the Cheetah, medical geneticist and conservationist Stephen J. O’Brien narrates fast-moving science adventure stories that explore the mysteries of survival among the earth’s most endangered and beloved wildlife. Here we uncover the secret histories of exotic species such as Indonesian orangutans, humpback whales, and the imperiled cheetah-the world’s fastest animal which nonetheless cannot escape its own genetic weaknesses.

Among these genetic detective stories we also discover how the Serengeti lions have lived with FIV (the feline version of HIV), where giant pandas really come from, how bold genetic action pulled the Florida panther from the edge of extinction, how the

NAVC ENTERTAINMENT AND EVENTS

survivors of the medieval Black Death passed on a genetic gift to their descendents, and how mapping the genome of the domestic cat solved a murder case in Canada.

With each riveting account of animal resilience and adaptation, a remarkable parallel in human medicine is drawn, adding yet another rationale for species conservation-mining their genomes for cures to our own fatal diseases. Tears of the Cheetah offers a fascinating glimpse of the insight gained when geneticists venture into the wild.

CLINICAL SIGNS IN SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE

Michael Schaer, DVM, DACVIM, ACVECCProfessor, Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences,

College of Veterinary Medicine, University of FloridaNAVC Associate Program Coordinator

Dr. Schaer is one of the world’s leading veterinary clinician’s and instructors. Following the acclaim for his ground-breaking textbook Clinical Medicine of the Dog & Cat, he has selected more than 400 clinical cases for his new book that represent the distilled wisdom and experience derived from his career in practice and as a university professor.

Grouped by subject, the cases are presented by means of over 800 high-resolution, color photographs, complete with detailed captions focusing on key diagnostic and treatment pointers. The underlying, yet unspoken, theme of the book is that the clinician’s eye, thought processes and judgement will always be central to successful clinical practice. Clinical Signs in Small Animal Medicine is a veterinary treasure-house for all involved in medicine of the dog and cat - practitioners, instructors, trainees and students.

Training Seminar Announcement A PennHIP training seminar will be offered in conjunction with the North American Veterinary Conference on January 15, 2010. The seminar consists of 7 hours of lecture covering the current understanding of canine hip dysplasia with specific emphasis on the science to support the PennHIP radiographic procedure. Ample opportunity will be provided for hands-on practice of the technique through the use of bone and simulated mechanical models. Attendees will receive 6 hours of continuing education credit. Technicians are welcome toaccompany a veterinarian, for a reduced fee. Coffee breaks and lunch will be included. Registrants are responsible for their own travel and lodging. Interested veterinarians can register by calling 215-573-3176 or by completing and submitting this form.

Compression View Distraction View

The PennHIP method of canine hip evaluation utilizes a special distraction device and depends on precise positioning of the patient to obtain diagnostic radiographs. Only “certified” PennHIP members can take and submit radiographs for official analysis. Certified members have successfully completed quality assurance exercises at their respective practices to ensure consistency and accuracy in performing the PennHIP radiographic technique. A distraction device is required to perform PennHIP radiography and can be purchased through PennHIP. A one-time reading fee is charged for the quality assurance exercises (see fee schedule below). Although these fees are optional, we suggest that registrants pay for them with registration so that the distractor will be delivered to the seminar and certification exercises may be started immediately upon return to your clinic.
