4 PVF OutlOOk WINtER 2014

Our seventh installment of PVF Out-look focuses on natural gas and fea-tures guest author Carol Freeden-thal, an energy consultant with

over 45 years of experience in natural gas, petroleum, electricity and other energy prod-ucts. In his article, Freedenthal reveals the promising growth that the liquefied natural gas (LNG) markets represent. The U.S. Depart-ment of Energy is awarding licenses to export this clean-burning, low-polluting fossil fuel, and the added demand on domestic sources is expected to have positive results for the economy. This would include the promotion of capital investment into infrastructure for both production and downstream facilities. These investments would financially affect segments of U.S. manufacturing, over-the-road and ocean-going transportation, export (liquefying) and import (regasification) facil-ities and the conversion of some coal-fired power generation plants.

In his recurring column, Economic Out-look, Morris Beschloss suggests that natural gas might be a surprising dynamic force in our country’s future energy and economic devel-opment. He writes that the key to achieving economic dominance is dependent upon how quickly facilities to convert LNG can be built. Perhaps even more intriguing is the potential for growth in onshore manufacturing of LNG byproducts, including polyethylene, nylon, rayon and an array of plastics with a variety of uses in consumer derivative products.

You may recall that our last issue of PVF Outlook provided some insight as to how renewable sources of energy might add or

detract from the total domestic energy pic-ture. In a second feature article, Freedenthal revisits this topic and presents the case that despite all of the desire, promotion and incen-tives to adopt renewables, their penetration into the fuel markets is still a relatively low percentage, citing technological and economic reasons. Fossil fuels, given their availability, will have a place in the total energy equation for years to come, writes Freedenthal.

In his Washington Update column, Dan Hil-ton, the American Supply Association’s direc-tor of government affairs, provides a succinct review on how the change of operating rules in the U.S. Senate may potentially have dramatic consequences for those involved in the nation’s business community who will have to comply with regulations from the Environmental Pro-tection Agency, OSHA and National Labor Rela-tions Board. Hilton also provides insight into additional challenges due to a permissive U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, known as the D.C. Circuit Court, favor-able to the current administration.
