Welcome to NSBE

Greetings, On behalf of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), it is with great pleasure that we invite you to partner with us to positively impact our global engineering communities by focusing on advancing the underrepresented ethnic minority, in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.). Founded in 1975, the National Society of Black Engineers is the world‟s premier organization supporting black engineers. NSBE is a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization that is run by a National Executive Board consisting of students pursuing degrees in the S.T.E.M. fields at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and is supported through central operations by our full time professional staff of 25 based at our World Headquarters facility in Alexandria, Virginia. Our mission, “To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community,” is now embraced by the 35,776, and growing, number of active members of all racial backgrounds. This growth has been facilitated by the offerings in leadership training, professional and scholastic development, mentoring opportunities, community service programs and scholarship opportunities that NSBE provides. Through a partnership with NSBE, your organization will gain great opportunities to maximize your visibility, recruit top diverse talent, and support events that both encourage and support men and women of color in their pursuit of careers in the S.T.E.M. fields. NSBE annually hosts 12 regional conferences, a national leadership training institute, an international conference and an annual convention which, to-date, draws nearly 10,000 attendees. This fact, along with the overall growth of NSBE, has been facilitated by the participation in and support of our events provided by various companies, foundations, government agencies, and academic institutions. Approximately 300 exhibitors and sponsors participate in NSBE events every year. These events have benefited our partners and supporters by providing great access for recruitment of top engineering student and technical professional talent as well as providing a forum to showcase their products, technology, and professional development opportunities. We encourage you to review this Partnership Packet and discover the great sponsorship opportunities that can benefit your company and support our charitable mission. About Region VI NSBE strives for the recruitment and retention of young students of color majoring in a wide variety of fields, such as engineering, technology, mathematics, and physical sciences. NSBE Region VI is the largest geographical region within the organization, comprised of numerous chapters within 13 western states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming) containing more than 1300 PCI, collegiate and alumni members. In an effort to fulfill our mission, Region VI has developed many programs and conferences for the academic, professional and cultural advancement of our members. Fall Regional Conference (FRC): As the largest gathering event for NSBE Region VI, FRC serves as a great opportunity for all of our sponsors to gain direct access to a highly talented and motivated group of engineering students and professionals looking to advance academically, culturally and professionally. Taking place November 18

th-20

th, the conference is comprised of three sub-conferences which take place

simultaneously. The combination into the overall conference to establishes a diverse mix of alumni, current, and future leaders. Please see page 10 & 16 for partnership opportunities.

PCI Mini-Conference: The Pre-Collegiate Initiative program (PCI)—founded by Region VI in 1971—was designed to promote academic excellence amongst students of grades 6-12. Implemented by the many regional chapters throughout the year, PCI has since been adopted and implemented as a national initiative. The PCI Mini-Conference is an opportunity for grade school students to become involved in attaining a higher education. It is geared to provide College Preparatory Workshops along with Math & Science Competitions while teaching students about engineering professions via roundtable discussions, competitions, and interactions with collegiate and alumni members. Please see page 12 for sponsorship opportunities.

Collegiate Conference: In the realization of the NSBE mission the Collegiate Conference provides educational opportunities to its members through Graduate School Fairs, Scholarship Competitions, and Academic Excellence Workshops. Collegiate members can become skilled at test taking and time management, brush up on professional etiquette and financial management. Students learn about the importance of professional licensure, and pursue employment opportunities at the Career Fair. They also receive professional development though the technical research expo and build up on these foundations though reinforcement when engaging in PCI mentorships. Please see page 13 for sponsorship opportunities. Professional Development Conference (PDC): The NSBE Alumni Extension program is comprised of young technical professionals, offering benefits such as professional training, leadership development, mentoring and employment opportunities, serve as regional advisors, and community outreach. NSBE Alumni leaders play an imperative role in helping developing collegiate leaders as well as NSBE Region VI Executive Board. The goal of this conference is to stimulate and develop the potential of our members to become leaders within NSBE and beyond. Aimed to enhance the participants‟ pursuit of excellence in their academic and professional careers, as well as in community involvement this conference hosts professional training and Technical Certification Workshops. Through the alumni extension, professionals can acquire highly sought after certifications and skill sets while keeping up with new technologies in one of our many Special Interest Groups. Also these members can tap into a network with each other as well as younger members by way of hosting Professional Development Workshops for Collegiate Members. (About Region VI Con’t) Academic Tech Bowl: Held during the FRC Conference, the objective of the Academic Technical Bowl is to encourage and showcase Academic Excellence and understanding. Program participation occurs through healthy competition in a “Jeopardy!” style game show format. Questions cover a wide variety of topics, from NSBE and African American Scientists and Inventors history to general engineering and science curricula from the FE/EIT. Each team represents a different NSBE Chapter and the winning team from each region will compete for the national title at the National Convention. Region VI Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK): The Region VI Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for pre-college (PCI) students. These camping conferences have been a part of NSBE history since 1971. The purpose of the SEEK is to motivate students to pursue higher education and to develop interest and skills in the technical fields while engaging in fun activities. SEEK also provides an opportunity to introduce pre-college students to careers in engineering and technology through a series of interactive and engaging team-based projects, workshops, and activities. Academic Resource Diversity (ARD): Geared towards utilizing and discovering new and distinctive ways in which academic education resources can be leveraged. It is important, as engineers and leaders, that we stay on the cutting-edge academically and utilize every possible resource available; especially being a non-profit organization that is full of students and volunteers. One focus of ARD, is to seek out and discover these new and innovative ways of learning, research them, and determine if and how they can be used most effectively in fulfilling the NSBE mission. A Walk For Education (AWFE): Every April, teams of NSBE and community members go door-to-door in a predominantly underrepresented minority communities, passing out literature informing local youth and their parents about lucrative career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and emphasizing the importance of finishing high school and going to college. AWFE is to increase awareness of the STEM fields and to shatter myths about African-Americans in math, science, engineering and other technologies. Regional Program Goals: Along with the Pre-Collegiate Initiative program, NSBE Alumni Extension program, Regional Leadership Conference, and Fall Regional Conference, Region VI is implementing new program goals for the 2011-2012 year. These goals are a direct refection of the NSBE mission and the recognized areas of improvement for Black Engineers within the Region. Please refer to New Regional Program Sponsorship Opportunities on page 18.
