National Historic Landmarks – Virginia

Scope and Content Note:

National Historic Landmarks (NHL) are nationally significant historic places designated by the

Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or

interpreting the heritage of the United States. Working with citizens throughout the nation, the

National Historic Landmarks Program draws upon the expertise of National Park Service staff

who guide the nomination process for new Landmarks and provide assistance to existing

Landmarks.

- From the National Park Service, National Historic Landmarks page: http://www.nps.gov/nhl/

The NHL records from Virginia are comprised of nomination forms, photographs, maps,

correspondence, memorandums, and ephemera which document the efforts of the NHL

Program to designate historically significant places in Texas.

Arrangement:

The NHL records are arranged alphabetically by place name. Within the physical files,

researchers will find the records arranged in the following way: Most Recent Nomination Form,

Photographs, Maps, Past Nomination Forms, Correspondence, and then Research

documentation.

Extent:

The NHL records for Virginia totals 10 Linear Feet.

Processing:

The Virginia National Historic Landmark records were processed and cataloged at the

Intermountain Region Museum Services Center by Leslie Matthaei, Jessica Peters, Ryan Murray,

Caitlin Godlewski, and Jennifer Newby.

Associated Material:

The NHL records exist in conjunction with the National Register of Historic Places records.

Researchers may benefit from accessing these associated bodies of records for Virginia:
