About the Shoolini University
About the SMP
About Solan City
Shoolini University (with a vision to be amongst top 200 global universities) was founded during 2009 with an objective of research focus driven university for promoting R&D in science, technology and management sciences. Within about eight years’ of inception, Shoolini University has emerged as a leading research-intensive private university and has become a role model for other private universities in the country. Ranked among top 150 Indian Universities by MHRD-
ndNIRF (2016, 2017), it is 2 best private university in Himachal Pradesh and B++ grade accredited by NAAC.This is testified by over30 extramurally funded projects worth Rs 180 million; ‘h-index’ 27 (one of the highest amongst
private and public north Indian universities established in 2009 or later), publication of over 900 research articles (above 500 in Scopus listed journals); 55 patent applications; 114 students awarded PhD degrees (one foreign examiner) etc. demonstrating that quality researche can be undertaken in Indian private universities.
Being located in the Himalayas, this university has adopted the research theme ‘sustainability and conservation of Himalayan bio-resources’ and in this direction has established six faculties (Biotechnology and Applied Sciences; Engineering and Technology; Management Sciences and Liberal Arts; Pharmaceutical Sciences; Legal Sciences and Basic Sciences) for imparting undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
The Choice Based Credit System allows students to select general electives from a host of subjects. The eUniv initiative provides online access to courses supplementing classroom teaching. The skill driven pedagogy (SPRINT), benchmarked against top US Universities, helps rural and semi-urban students to develop soft and technical skills.
The university has tied with industry for joint research projects, curriculum development and training in line with Skill India Mission. Under active international exchange, 34 students have so far undertaken a semester study in foreign universites, and likewise 15 sudents from South Korea and Taiwan have come to Shoolini University.
Shoolini Uniiversity has a sylvan campus on the Oachghat – Kumarhatti Road (Himachal State Highway 6) at an altitude of about 1500 meters. It is 15 km from Solan, 54 km from Chandigarh and 18 km from Dharampur. The University is easily approachable by road from Delhi, Chandigarh and Kalka. The nearest airport is at Chandigarh and Shimla, and the nearest broad gauge railway station is at Kalka, while the closest narrow gauge rail station is at Solan.
Society for Conservation and Resource Development of Medicinal Plants (SMP) has been established in 2007 and has been functioning with aims and objectives :
l to constitute a forum at international and national level for bringing together individuals and organizations involved in l medicinal crops; Publishing “Medicinal Plants” An international, quarterly journal of Phytomedicines and Related
l Industry; to explore new areas of medicinal crop cultivation technologies, development activity and logistic management; l to propagate utilization on non-conventional and renewable sources of medicines from natural plant sources and devices in herbal industry for medicinal plants products processing including extraction of active ingredients and products of
l medicinal importance; to offer recognition and awards to professional groups and individuals for attainment of excellence l in the field of medicinal crops and related industries; to interact with government agencies, scientific organization and
l NGOs to promote and protect interests of medicinal crop growers and producers; to organize symposia, seminars and workshops, and bring out timely publication(s) to meet the objectives of the research.
Known as the ‘Mushroom capital of India’, Solan is situated 65 km from Chandigarh and 50 km ahead of Shimla. Largely a forested land surrounded by hills and mountains, Solan primarily serves as a gateway to other popular hill stations like Kasauli and Chail. Also known as the ‘city of red gold’, because of the bulk production of tomatoes. It is located at an altitude of approximately 1467 m above sea level. Solan derives its name from Goddess Shoolini Devi, the patron deity of the region. The hill station is visited by tourists who love solitude, peace and offer interesting trekking possibilities and its streams are well stocked with a variety of game fish. Among the places to visit are the Shoolini Mata Temple, Jatoli Shiv Temple, Yungdrung Tibetan Monastery and the Gurkha Fort are the most famous.
About the Conference
Sessional Themes
Young Scientist Award
Medicinal and aromatic plants have been used since ancient times in the traditional practices for health care. Major
portion of the world population relies on traditional medicine, largely plant based, for primary healthcare needs. Forests
have played key roles in the lives of people living in both mountains and lowland areas by supplying fresh water and
oxygen as well as providing a diversity of valuable forest products for food and medicine. The age-old traditional values
attached with the various forest types and the varieties of forest products i.e., medicinal plants have gained tremendous
importance in the present century. Medicinal plants are mainly the alternate income-generating source of underprivileged
communities; therefore, strengthening this sector may benefit and improve the living standard of rural and forest
communities. A great deal of traditional knowledge of the use of various plant species is still intact with the indigenous
people, and this fact is especially relevant with the mountainous areas such as the Himalaya due to less accessibility of
terrain and comparatively slow rate of development. It is proposed to organize a conference in Solan, Himachal Pradesh for
the exploration of the plants of Himalaya for their traditional values. The place chosen for the conference is ethno-
medicinally rich and has unique physiognomic, climatic and topographic conditions. Production and management of
medicinal plants in India is still unorganised, and there is hardly any coordination between the scientists, the grower and
the industry. A large number of scientists work on medicinal plants, but fail to address the real issues, or their achievements
in the laboratory do not reach the field and the industry for lack of interaction. The objective of the conference would be to
create a platform for the scientists, growers, traders, industry and policymakers to come together and exchange information
for mutual benefit. Today, medicinal herbs are the backbone of a thriving pharmaceutical industry. How to conserve the
mother germplasm in the forests; meet the market demand from the farmer’s fields; storage, processing and packaging and
transport on scientific lines; bio-prospecting and discovery of novel drugs; and availability of genuine herbal drugs to the
consumer at fair price are some of the problems. These needs to be tackled through application of science and technology,
together with sound economic and management principles. While the industry takes care of itself through R&D, the
foremost challenge before us is how to help the farmer get fair profit from his medicinal crop. How to achieve the complex
task will be the theme of the conference.
l Conservation (biology & ecology) and genetic improvement; Medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics and drug discovery; l l lCrop physiology, Soil health and Agropractices; Biotechnological interventions; Policy regulations and marketing
l l lissues; Concerns of Herbal industries; Validation of traditional knowledge on herbal medicine; Primary processing l and value addition in rural set up; Recommendations on genuine substitutes of threatened medicinal plants.
To promote the younger generation, two categories (First and Second) of Encouragement Awards in oral and poster
sessions. Students and young scientists (upto 35 years) are most welcome to submit their abstracts in this category. These
sessions will be held separately.
