Competenz is a multi-sector industry training organisation. We help Kiwi industry grow skills, careers and businesses and make it easy to learn on-the-job.
About this qualificationThis qualification combines core foundation skills in mechanical engineering with six elective strands that provide specialised skills and knowledge tailored to learners’ and companies’ specific needs.
Who this qualification is intended for This qualification is for people working as fitters, fitters and turners, fitters and welders, maintenance and diagnostics engineers, maintenance fitters, power station fitters, toolmakers, precision machinists, and machine tool setters. The fitting and machining strand is for people working in machine building and related occupations, where both precision fitting and machining skills are needed. The general engineering strand is for people working in a general engineering workshop. The machining strand is for people working in companies where the emphasis is on precision machining of components. The maintenance engineering strand is for people working on engineering maintenance in companies where the emphasis is on maintaining reliable production, possibly in a lean (competitive) manufacturing environment. The toolmaking strand is for people working in companies making tooling, press tooling, moulds, dies, gauges, jigs and fixtures for industrial processes. The electricity supply strand is for people installing, maintaining and servicing plant and equipment that generates electricity.
Skills and knowledge coveredHealth and safety, measuring and tolerancing, tools, materials and metals, sketching, interpreting drawings, trade calculations, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, basic machining, welding, fitting, assembly, job costing
Each strand builds on these core skills. Learners can choose from elective unit standards to suit their area of work.
