High expectations for all: A culture of high expectations for our students and our educators sets high standards, which leads to high achievement. Personalised Student Learning: By teaching to the strengths and needs of each individual, students will be better able to reach and exceed their potential. Wellbeing: Every student will be known, cared for and respected. Creating stronger ties with local communities: Parents and carers are our school’s partners in the education and wellbeing of each student. Partnerships with local businesses and industry create opportunities for our students to contribute to and thrive in society.

At the end of last term, Narromine High celebrated NAIDOC day and the opening of the Yarning Circle and Healing Garden. This exceptional day highlighted ‘Culture’ and ‘Dance’. The students who participated in activities were outstanding and made the day where the community could come together and be part of the opportunities at Narromine High. A huge thank to the following groups and individuals – Narromine Public School for hosting the assembly which showcased students from our community. Midnight Brydon for his insight regarding his journey with language and the connections it develops to the community and land. Peter Peckham who conducted the smoking ceremony at the yarning circle. Junior AECG and Maddie Hull who lead and organised the student activities. Mark Smith and Crystal Donnelly for supporting the students with their dance and language. The community Elders and parents who came and supported our students. Our students who have worked hard and were very keen to showcase their achievements, I hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did. Thank you all for your support. Philip Rufus Relieving Principal MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Australian Maths Competition: On Thursday 27 July, over 30 students from different stages participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition organised by the Australian Mathematics Trust. The test was conducted online for the first time at Narromine High. Students had the opportunity and they tried their best to excel and compete against many students both in Australia and overseas. It was pleasing to see students using their skills to solve a given problem. Stage 4: This term, Stage 4 students are studying “Data Collection and Representation” where they learn about collecting data, sources of data, types of data and then representing the raw data in different forms using graphs. Students are completing an assessment task based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in collaboration with the science faculty known as Student Research Project (SRP). The mathematics component will be marked by the mathematics faculty. Stage 5: Students are learning about “Equations and Inequalities, Trigonometry and

Simultaneous Equations”. They will be completing one topic test on these topics. Students are encouraged to use ‘Matheletics’ at home to prepare for these tests. Stage 6: HSC Trials are being conducted the week commencing 14 August (week 5). Students have received their timetables for these exams. This is their last exam before sitting the external HSC exams in Term 4.

SCIENCE All students in Stage 4 and 5 have now received their assessment task for Term 3, the Science Research Project. The project is to be typed into report format and will not be presented on boards this year as there is no science fair. Students in Stage 4 should be well underway with their investigations as the project is due on Friday 25 August (week 6). Students in Stage 5 have until Friday 15 September (week 9) and should be in the process of conducting their initial experiments. These tasks are worth 30% of the overall grade and as such, it is important that all students try to keep up with the recommended weekly schedule. If you have any questions regarding the task please do not hesitate to contact the science faculty. We are running after school sessions every Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 pm to provide students with additional assistance on the project. All are welcome to attend. Students in HSC Chemistry, Biology and Senior Science have their Trial Examinations in the week commencing 14 August (week 5). This examination is worth 30% of their assessment HSC mark. It is important that students are establishing a study routine at home to improve their marks and prepare them for the upcoming HSC examinations. They are encouraged to utilise the support from their teachers and submit past examinations for feedback. STUDENT OF THE MONTH Jason Bonwick (pictured), Year 10, is the Student of the Month for August as he has been making positive progress in the workshop in both wood and metal. He is showing improved skills and effort in his projects. WESTERN REGION ATHLETICS CARNIVAL A fantastic day was had by all who attended the Western Athletics Carnival at Barden Park last Friday. The sun was shining and both competitors and spectators were keen to get things underway. Narromine High School was represented with enthusiasm, pride and determination. Despite students running from event to event and being on the move all day, many of them achieved their personal best distance, time or height in their events with many of them going on to qualify for the State Carnival. The day started with outstanding results and representation in the field events against some very tough competition. Results as follows –

Edward Walker 1st in shot-put, javelin and discus.

Cameron Simmons 1st in the triple jump.

Page 4: Narromine High School Newsletter - narromine-h.schools.nsw ... · It was very successful and a fantastic team effort. Thank you to the community who helped support their ... These

Emily Abbott 3rd in long jump.

Troy Harding 3rd in discus.

Blake Harding 3rd in high jump.

Lakeisha Hull 2nd in long jump.

Ella Hutchison 2nd in triple jump.

Jordan Itoya, Bailey Kelly, Elissa Simmons, Holly Davison, Mark Coleman and Georgia McGuire all put their best efforts into their many events. The track events came around quickly with yet again some brilliant results.

Ella Hutchison 1st in the 200m.

Isayah Kelly 1st in the 100m.

We had some very quick runs from Lakeisha Hull, Troy Harding, Lane Edgcumbe, Georgia McGuire and Blake Harding in their various track events. The relay was another stand out for Narromine High School with both the senior boys and senior girls relay teams taking out 1st place (Lane Edgcumbe, Cameron Simmons, Troy Harding and Isayah Kelly/Tasma O’Brien, Ella Hutchison, Emily Abbott and Lakeisha Hull). Congratulations to the following students for their representation at the Western Region Athletics Carnival and to those who have qualified for the CHS Carnival to be held at Homebush Stadium, Sydney in early September – Emily Abbott Mark Coleman Holly Davison Lane Edgcumbe Blake Harding Troy Harding Lakeisha Hull Ella Hutchison Jordan Itoya Bailey Kelly Isayah Kelly Georgia McGuire Cameron Simmons Elissa Simmons Edward Walker Tasma O’Brien Beth Stace Athletics Coordinator COONABARABRAN HORSE SPORTS Late last term Georgia McGuire, Tayah Turnbull and Emma Housden (pictured) travelled to Coonabarabran for the Coona Horse Expo held at the racecourse over four days. Our first day was the one day event which included show

jumping and dressage. Our first event was dressage with all three of us passing. Show jumping followed with Georgia having a clear round giving her an entry in cross country the following day. Unfortunately Tayah’s horse decided not to go over a single jump. In the afternoon we had our first game of polocrosse where we were convincingly beaten. On day two we woke up to the freezing cold weather of -1 degree which made the water freeze. First up we all headed out to cheer Georgia over the cross country course, things were going well until the incorrect jump at the end was attempted, causing disqualification. In the afternoon we

again played polocrosse, our first game we lost and the second one losing by one point. On day three we went our separate ways with Tayah and Emma doing Warrumbungle way which included polo and polocrosse, horse ball and bareback with Emma jumping on her very tall horse doing tricks. Georgia attended show jumping coming fourth. On our last day we participated in team penning getting in one cow, followed by the parade. Thank you to Julie Rae for providing transport and spending the four days with us. Georgia McGuire MUSICAL NOTES YEAR 7: Year 7 students are currently learning about Australian Music. They have researched the band Yothu Yindi and the Garma Festival which happens around this time each year. Soon they will be introduced to ‘bucket drumming’. This, combined with the djembe (African drums) will form the basis of their performance assessment for the end of the term. YEAR 9: Year 9 students also have a performance assessment this term. They are busy preparing for an assembly performance which will also count towards their assessment. On Tuesday 22 August, the Turramurra High School brass band will perform for the school during period 4. After lunch, our Year 9 music class will have the opportunity to meet the performers for an informal workshop.

Year 10 Work Experience Narromine High School has a long standing Work Experience Program allowing Year 10 students the opportunity to undertake a week of work experience in an area of their choice. Work experience provides students with the opportunity to explore the workplace. It is designed to assist them in the transition from school to work, develop a greater awareness of their abilities and interests and to make appropriate, well informed and realistic career decisions. Dates – 20 – 24 November or 27 November - 1 December These dates are flexible as we try and suit employers as much as possible. The choice and arrangement of placement is primarily the responsibility of students and their parents. Many families choose to use family or business contacts and it is a great opportunity for students to practise job application skills by approaching employers. However, if you need support in any way contact me from Tuesday - Friday on 6889 1499. Procedure:

1. Student contacts employer to seek confirmation of placement. 2. Once employer has agreed to the placement - students lodge their placement with Mrs

Davison, the Careers Adviser. 3. Student Placement Record will be issued, which is the official form that must be signed by

the student, parents, employer and the school. 4. Students needing away from home accommodation will also need an extra form. 5. No placement can take place until the completed documents have been returned to Mrs

Davison.
