4. COST D20: New molecular systems with therapeutic applications in photodynamic therapy of cancer and antimicrobial infections.
This paper deals with the development of the new biomaterial on the basis of the porphyrins/C60 and their photodynamic therapy with application in dermatology. Porphyrins and porphyrin precursors or derivatives are used as active agent of killing tumoral cells using the Photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cutaneous malign tumors. Chitosan and polyvinyl pyrolidone (PVP) are biodegradable, biocompatible, naturally occurring polymers used for drug encapsulation and delivery. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is increasingly used for the treatment of skin cancers and other indications and it uses exogenously administered or endogenously formed photosensitizers activated by light to induce cell death via formation of singlet oxygen and other free radicals.
