Nancy J. Bechtol is the Director of Smithsonian Facilities (SF) at the Smithsonian Institution. She manages all facilities engineering and management needs within the nineteen museums and research centers and the National Zoo that make up the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and New York, utilizing an in-house workforce of over 1850 FTE and an operating budget of 340 million. She oversees the Capital, Maintenance and Operations programs for all Smithsonian facilities worldwide. Currently the largest capital project is building the Smithsonian’s newest museum, the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She oversees the Office of Protection Services (OPS) and the Office of Safety, Health and Environmental Management (OSHEM), Smithsonian Gardens (SG) and the Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Ms. Bechtol has managed facilities related emergencies at Smithsonian in metro DC area and NY for the past 23 years. Several major emergencies included the 2006 flood along Constitution Ave. that affected NMNH, NMAH and the Castle. She has also managed the aftermath of the earthquake in 2011 and too many snow/ice storms to count. She has experience internationally in Panama in assisting the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). Prior to coming to the Smithsonian, Ms. Bechtol was Horticultural Manager for the 30,000 acre Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission in Montgomery County, Maryland. She managed the horticultural program in 300 parks throughout the county. Ms. Bechtol was employed by Longwood Gardens as Integrated Pest Manager and developed the first IPM program in a public garden setting. She was employed by several public gardens in her career and gained additional experience from Ladew Topiary Gardens and Brookside Gardens in Maryland and the U. S. National Arboretum in Washington, DC. Ms. Bechtol graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Delaware through the Longwood Program in Public Garden Administration. She became a Certified Facility Manager through IFMA in 2007. She resides and gardens in Silver Spring, MD with her horticultural husband and visits her two amazing daughters whenever possible. Bio June 2016 Nancy J.
