Farewell Friday brings to an end my tenure as Principal of Nailsworth Primary School and a career in the Department of Education that has spanned over 45 years. It has been a long and rewarding journey that started as a 20 year old, married for 2 weeks, a long way from home and in front of my first class in Woomera. My career since then has been enriched by teaching and leadership roles in a range of country and city locations. I have been very fortunate to have ended my journey at Nailsworth Primary SchooI. I thank the staff, parents and governing councillors who have supported me over the last 7 years. We have a wonderful group of students at NPS and they certainly deserve the best educational and social environment that we can provide. On Friday the 18th of June, 19 students from the Nailsworth Chess Clubs participated in the SA Schools Interschool Chess Tournament at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish School. The Interschool ‘West’ tournament had a total of 36 students participating from 3 different schools.

It was an outstanding performance with Nailsworth winning the tournament. The team scored a perfect 28 points from the 7-game tournament. It was very close for second and third place with Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish School scoring 14.5 points and Whitefriars Catholic School scoring 14 points.

The Nailsworth Chess team had 9 students awarded with certificates of High Distinction for scoring 6 or 7 wins for the tournament. There were 4 Distinction certificates awarded to players scoring 4 or 5 wins for the tournament.

The top 4 rated players, from which the team score is calculated, were Agamnoor (7 points), Nam (7 points), Fletcher (7 points) and Om (7 points). These students were all undefeated throughout the tournament and were awarded medals as a team.

Agamnoor was awarded The Best Player of the tournament, winning all of his games. Mary, who was participating in her first tournament, was awarded The Best Female Player.

9 of the top 10 placing students were from Nailsworth. Well done to Brenton (6.5 points), Yushi (6.5 points), Fabian (6 points), Jaydon (6 points) and Krishna (5.5 points) for placing in the top 10.

Thank you to Amy Montgomery for volunteering her time to assist with supervision and support on this tournament.

It is great to see the students applying tactics, strategies and theory that we have been learning. Congratulations and well done to all of the dedicated Nailsworth Chess Club members who represented our school on this fantastic achievement.

Music and Drama News

Musica Viva Performance – “The Air I Breathe” Last Wednesday 23rd June, our students in Year 2, 3 and 4 along with students in Room 11 were treated to a special performance by the Arcadia Winds trio, presented by Musica Viva. The students were a fantastic audience and asked some really great questions at the end of the performance. They now know a lot more about how wind instruments are played and how musicians use their breath to create different sound effects. Thank you for supporting your children to attend this wonderful performance as we continue to build our knowledge and skills in music.

Flute Lessons Catherine Anderson is now offering flute lessons at Nailsworth. She has visited two of our Year 2 and Year 3 classes to demonstrate how the flute works and played some familiar tunes. Groups lessons for up to three students are available and will happen on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings from 8:15am. Individual lessons are available after school on Wednesdays or by negotiation with Catherine. Please email me if you are interested in this opportunity for your child and I will forward further information.

Piano, Guitar and Voice Lessons The school currently offers private lessons in piano, guitar and voice through “Learning Through Music” at the school. If your child is interested in these lessons please contact them at [email protected] or call 0401 398 120.

If you have any questions or require further information about the Music and Drama program at Nailsworth please contact me.

Growth and Development Class Sessions

Kidz Biz Education will be presenting Growth and Development sessions to our Year 4-7 students next term at various times throughout Weeks 1 – 6 on Wednesdays.

Kidz Biz has presented these sessions in the past to our students and we have found their presenter to be very professional and knowledgeable. The information she presents will be age appropriate and the topics and content covered are within the Australian Health and PE Curriculum and also within the mandatory departmental program ‘Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum’.

Each class teacher will be in attendance and they will be able to provide opportunities for follow up discussions. There will be no cost for these lessons as it is the provision of required student learning.

If parents/guardians have any concerns please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Parent Update Week 9, Term 2 – 2021

Looking beyond year 7In 2022, year 7 and 8 students will start high school in the same year for the first and only time. We are working hard to ensure the move is smooth and successful for all families and our broader school communities.

Support for year 8sEvery age of schooling is important, and our schools will continue catering for the needs of all students.

While our 2022 year 7 group is receiving a lot of focus in the lead-up to its historic move to high school, our schools are continuing to fully support year 8 students starting high school in 2022. Our schools are highly experienced at running transition programs to ensure year 8s feel welcomed in their new settings. The programs also have a strong focus on helping students form new friendships. This will not change under the year 7 to high school move. Both year 7 and year 8 students will be provided with full transition programs.

Our senior students remain a key focus Our schools are very capable of managing student needs and parents can be assured that senior students will continue to receive the attention they require for their learning.

Impact on primary schoolsNaturally, overall student numbers will drop in our primary schools when year 7 moves to high school.

The government has made a commitment not to close schools as part of the year 7 to high school move. We are offering top-up funding to some eligible regional schools to ensure they don’t drop class numbers due to the departure of year 7.

Some primary school teachers are choosing to apply for new high school positions that have been created because of the move. Welcoming them into our high schools will ensure students continue to benefit from their extensive knowledge of year 7 curriculum and teaching methods.

Benefits to high school communitiesFeedback from all the schools in our pilot program showed they benefitted from having year 7s on site. The pilot has involved three public high schools, which started welcoming year 7s in 2019. Teachers found the year 7s to be full of energy and optimism, which was a positive for the culture of their wider school communities.

Managing interactions between different year levelsFrameworks already exist in public schools to manage interactions between students of different ages. They already operate in our Birth to 12, Reception to 12 and Area schools. Many schools run peer mentor programs with older students and will have designated yard spaces for 7 and 8 students for lunch and recess. Check with your school about what they offer.

Where to find out moreStay informed through your school and the Department for Education’s website: www.education.sa.gov.au/7toHS.
