Principal Jenny Moore

I am returning to work (and commencing my job as your principal) on Monday, November 4 after my maternity leave with new daughter Faera Rogers. I have enjoyed valuable time with my family, but am ready and excited to join my Islander Family as well. I want to thank assistant principals Shane Schmeichel and Steve Abbott, the CHS staff, the CUSD administrative team, CHS students and families, and the community of Coronado for your support in my absence and the many well wishes and blessings bestowed upon my family during our time in the hospital and at home. I am so very grateful to all of you and look forward to seeing you at school and getting acquainted with the Class of 2017!

Go Islanders!

Progress Reports and Deficiency Notices

and Final Exams Your child's progress report (mid-semester progress) is available on Synergy as of October 25. You received a deficiency notice in the mail if your child is earning a D or F in any of his/her courses, or if there has been a precipitous decline in progress of concern to the teacher. Please remember that the most up-to-date information on your child's grades and progress is on Haiku; check in regularly for class announcements, assignments, and grade updates. As always, contact your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns about progress in a particular class, or his/her counselor with general concerns related to success at school. Our fall semester is shorter than the spring semester, as final exams fall before the winter break. This year will be our second with unbalanced semesters--we see benefit for both our students/families and teachers in completing the first semester's work before the break so that the holidays can be a restful, restorative time for all. Please see our final exams schedule for the week prior to the break in December (page 6). Fall Sports Wrap Up This month will see our fall sports wrapping up their seasons and entering into playoffs. We hosted a record-breaking eight home football games this fall; your last chance to attend is Friday, November 8. See our website for the schedule of remaining contests and come out and cheer on golf, volleyball, tennis, water polo, cross country, and football teams.

GOAL 100 “I want you to understand that your first duty is to humanity. I want others to look at us and see that we care not just about ourselves but about others.” –CJ Walker

Initiated by PATT volunteers from Village Elementary, project “GOAL 100” is a Coronado Unified School District (CUSD) collective effort to celebrate 100 years of education in the district and to share the prosperity we appreciate in our wonderful community. During the 100th year of CUSD, students and their families are invited to celebrate by participating in GOAL 100. The program runs September 2013 through May 2014 and includes improving the lives of those in our community and surrounding areas by donating new and gently used items to designated organizations. Each of the district’s schools has blue collection bins located in the front office. Each bin is displayed with a laminated poster listing the organizations and a brief description of their needs. The goal for each school, each month, is to collect 100 items for the designated beneficiaries. Detailed wish lists for each organization are located in the blue folder on the front of the bin. Children or parents can deliver donated items to school and place them in the bin throughout the month. At the end of each month, the items will be delivered to the organization of the month.

Goal 100 September – The Monarch School By Mary Kay Schroeder, GOAL 100 Chairperson

“Wow! Look at all of this! You brought all of this for us? Thank you!” I began to explain where all of the art supplies came from to a high school student at the Monarch School who was helping us unload the bins. She was amazed and overjoyed at the sight of the pile of supplies. She shared with me that they had girls’ group that evening and hoped to use some of the supplies then as well as in their art classes. I had the privilege of delivering the collected art supplies from our September GOAL 100 project to the Monarch School. Four storage bins overflowing with hundreds of markers, crayons, colored pencils, packs of construction paper, art paper, paint, brushes, and canvases and a few grocery bags loaded down with glue sticks and bottles were what we had to carry into the beautiful campus of the downtown school which serves children who are affected by homelessness.

Page 8: Nado News - Coronado Unified School District High School/… · Published Bi-Monthly Volume 2 Nov/Dec 2013 INSIDE Nado News ... 7 ROP Awards Ceremony / Theatre / 4:00 PM 8&9 Musical

I was met at the door by Katie Bradel, the volunteer/donations coordinator who was very welcoming and appreciative. As we unloaded the donations in the storage room, Katie shared with me the need for volunteers in the classrooms and children’s clothing. These children are waking up each morning to a challenging reality, but they have a beautiful school to attend staffed by amazing people who are teaching them that they do have a bright future and that they, one day, can repay the community that served them. I am thankful that the students and families of the Coronado Unified School District were a small part of helping make their days become a little brighter. Thank you for making our September collection so successful.

October – Regional Food Bank During October, we collected boxed and canned non-perishable food for the Regional Food Bank of San Diego. After the third week in October, we had already donated close to 1,000 pounds.

November – Coronado Retirement Center Students are encouraged to take the time to write a card or letter to a resident of the center. Hand-made drawings are also welcome to help brighten the days of our older generation.

Fall Volunteer Project – Sunday Dec. 8 All members of the CUSD family are invited to gather in Village Hall Sunday, December 8 from 1pm – 4pm to help tie fleece blankets for the homeless and low income population of San Diego County. Fleece has been purchased and will be prepared ahead of time. All ages are encouraged to attend.

Organizations and a brief description of items, by month November: Coronado Retirement Center – handwritten letters, notes, drawings

December: Toys for Tots – new unwrapped toys

CoSA Goes Nautical!

“Pirates of Penzance” opens soon!

On October 25th, you’ll likely see a few scallywags loitering around Coronado High. Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) will present the acclaimed Gilbert and Sullivan musical comedy “Pirates of Penzance”.

October 25 – November 2 at the Coronado Performing Arts Center Showtimes are 7 p.m. on October 25-26 & November 1-2 and 2 p.m. on October 27.

First premiered in New York in 1879, this piece straddles the line between musical theatre and opera, with beautiful music, and a plot full of laughter for everyone. Gilbert and Sullivan, a team famous for their “patter” songs, went on to compose 15 of these operettas that have stayed popular since their premiere, with Pirates being at the forefront of popularity. The story concerns Frederic, who having turned 21 years old, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the pair fall instantly in love. Fredric’s lovesick, jealous maid Ruth along with the Pirate King find out and inform him, that he was born on February 29, so technically he only has a birthday once every four years. Because his apprenticeship says he must remain apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, he must serve for another 63 years! Bound by his sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully. Enter some stiff, scared policemen to cross these vengeful (but sensitive!) pirates, and you will get a whirlwind of twists and turns that are sure to make you say “Shiver me timbers!”

These “rollicking” soft-hearted pirates are sure to delight buccaneers of all ages, as they navigate whether duty, loyalty or love is the most powerful force of all. The slapstick humor, the catchy tunes and the loveable characters will make this high-seas adventure a production you’ll never forget!

Tickets are $5 to $16 and on sale now online at www.cosasandiego.com. Or purchase 30 minutes prior to each performance. All seating is general admission.

CoSA Dance Goes “Outside” the Box

On December 14th and 15th the CoSA Classical and Contemporary Dance Department won’t be performing to a full house: They’ll be performing to a full stage and sidewalk and lobby!

In the first interactive performance of its kind in CoSA history, the “stage” is everywhere.

This avant-garde genre of performing began as early as the 1930’s but took off in the 1950s and 60s with the rise in Performance Art and Avant-Garde Theatre. To this day, this unique performance style is performed all over New York City and used internationally to express the art in life all around us.

The performance times are 7 pm on Friday and Saturday, December 14th and 15th, with an additional performance at 2 pm on Saturday the 15that Coronado Performing Arts Center located at 650 D Avenue. The choreographers recommend wearing comfortable shoes to the show and to expect the unexpected.
