Last year, Eastman Chemical Company – like many shippers – was feeling the toll that chassis rental costs were having on their bottom line. In recent years costs had risen from $10-12/day to over $20/day – not to mention their supply had become less than reliable.

“It wasn’t all about costs,” says Eastman Global Logistics Division Procurement Manager, Klaus Schnede, “Due to shortages precipitated by the congestion on the West Coast, we were being forced to do business with companies that weren’t the type of partners we wanted to do business with.”

Around that time Schnede spoke with NACPC President, Dave Manning, who he respected from having dealt with previously. “[Dave] found a way to solve one of our biggest problems. Once the Ocean Carriers began doing away with chassis support, we had to find new ways of addressing this ongoing issue. On a weekly basis I found myself in need of anywhere from 350-500 chassis. It was expensive and there were shortages to contend with.”

Not only was NACPC able to cut their rental costs in half, saving customers like Eastman millions of dollars year over year, they simplified the process

so that less coordination on the part of the customer was necessary. Schnede was extremely impressed at the way the “one-stop shop” model was integrated, allowing all coordination to be done by NACPC, giving the customer greater peace of mind.

“In addition to cost-efficiencies, [the Eastman team] was also impressed by the investment in modern equipment that NACPC has made,” says Schnede. “We’re transporting chemicals and executing many heavy moves so safety is a top concern. Things like radial tires, LED lights and, generally, modern, newer chassis give us greater assurance. NACPC’s equipment is in much better condition than our past suppliers’.”

For the innovative solutions that NACPC brought to bear on Eastman’s – as well as other customers – behalf, Eastman awarded NACPC their 2015 Supplier Excellence Award.
