Recent research regarding independent schools and student academic achievement has just been released with the following findings:

1. There are four key academic strengths of Australian independent schools:i. academic excellenceii. academic gainiii. academic equityiv. academic ethos

2. There are four distinctive features of independent schools which support their strong academic performances:i. parental engagementii. extra-curricular programsiii. pastoral careiv. teaching quality

3. All of these factors contribute to greater academic opportunity for independent school students as demonstrated by them:i. Being more likely to complete Year 12ii. Receiving more university offersiii. Being more likely to complete their degree

This research shows some of the clear academic advantages of independent schooling. Essentially, the research shows that if a school focuses on parental engagement, extra-curricular programs, pastoral care and quality teaching, then they will have a direct positive impact on student achievement. These are the very areas that William Carey has highlighted through our ongoing school improvement program which we call PEP (Pursuing Excellence Program).

The area of parent engagement is increasingly difficult as the time demands on parents are becoming more significant making it difficult for many families to be part of school activities and events. Much work has been recently done on our student wellbeing policy which has incorporated the pastoral care and extra-curricular areas. In addition to this the school has been focusing on teaching quality, particularly in the area of embedded formative assessment.

It is encouraging to see that these areas have been identified as distinctive features of independent schools that support strong academic performance. On page 4 of this Newsletter, you can find a one page flyer that I have included, which summarises this research.

Seussical is upon us! How exciting! Make sure you are part of this event, don’t miss out. Looking forward to seeing you at one of the shows.

1 Peter 1:3-5Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! From your

High School Deputy PrincipalsWeek 1 of this term, Miss Morphett and I had the opportunity to attend the highly acclaimed Generation Next – Mental Health and Wellbeing of Young People Leadership Program.

One of the topics covered was “Crisis Management for Online Issues”. This forty minute seminar was presented by Susan McLean who is recognised as Australia’s leading expert in the area of cyber safety. Since this seminar I have had opportunity to make email contact with Susan and had an extended discussion about both our school’s bullying and acceptable use of ICT policies in the school.

In reviewing these documents the school feels comfortable that we are providing suitable and safe premises and have more than adequate systems of supervision in place at school to protect students. While we can in no way be complacent regarding this issue, I remind you, as parents, that many of the issues regarding “cyber-crimes” are happening outside the school’s gates, often on mobile phones and other portable devices. The reality that highly inappropriate material is readily accessible on any 3G or 4G connected device is a major concern. Most children in the high school carry such a device. Issues such as cyber bullying, sexting and sextortion (the extortion of girls who have sent a photo to someone and are requested to send more images or risk publication of the previous images) are also of great concern for children of school age.

An article from the Sydney Morning Herald 2nd August 2015 reads as follows: “One in two teenage boys and girls have used a mobile phone to send a sexually explicit image of themselves, according to the biggest sexting survey undertaken in Australia. Teenage girls are using their mobiles to send sexual images of themselves because they think it's fun and sexy, rather than because they feel pressured by boys, the new research from the Australian Institute of Criminology found. Most of the 1200 teens surveyed who had sexted said they sent the image to a person with whom they had a relationship. Forty per cent had sent a sext to more than one person in the past year. Only six per cent of sexters reported sending an image on to a third party for whom the picture wasn't originally intended.” http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/fifty-per-cent-of-teens-sext-by-mobile-phone-20150731-giot3z.html#ixzz3iMhHszaf

Only today I have been meeting with a NSW police liaison officer who confirmed that teens found guilty of sexting face a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment and can be placed on the child sex offenders register. The Herald article states “NSW Police have laid more than 120 charges relating to sexting by people under 21 between January 2010 and September 2014”.

How confident are you regarding your child’s online behaviour? If they have a smartphone, your child is walking around with a camera, video, and internet access in their pocket. Software like “Open DNS” filters and logs your home network, while parents using “Telstra Mobile Protect” can set limits with their children and schedule online access so they have distraction free homework periods and internet-free bedtimes. When did you last have a conversation with your child regarding this topic or checked the history or photos on their mobile device?

From your

Primary School Deputy PrincipalThe Musical is upon us! Many, many weeks of learning songs, rehearsals, dress rehearsals, late night, parents driving backwards and forwards, etc have finally come to fruition. I am looking forward to opening night later this week.

The Woolworths “Earn and Learn” stickers are still coming in. They are available for a while longer, so please look out for them every time you go to Woolworths. I have already received a few suggestions from students regarding what they would like the money spent on.

A reminder that formal parent/teacher interviews will be held in week 7 of this term, with Years K-2 on Wednesday, 2nd September and Years 3-6 on Tuesday, 1st September. The PTO website will go live on Monday 24th August, so you will receive all necessary details before that date. NOTE – 5HD interviews are being held separately, due to Mrs Hall being absent on the main date. 5HD students have already received a note regarding this.

Lost property continues to build up, often without names to help us identify owners. We even have numerous pairs of glasses, still unclaimed. Please label everything, and encourage your child to look for missing items as soon as possible after they are misplaced.

Both Science Week and National Literacy and Numeracy Week are coming up soon. We have prepared some fun activities for the children to enjoy during these weeks. As Science Week is focusing on light this year, we will take advantage of all of the lights currently set up for the musical, to put on a show.

Our Zone Athletics Carnival was held recently. It was a very enjoyable day, with all of our students representing the school admirably. From Zone, a team of 18 students have progressed to State, which is a great achievement. More information, and some photos, are available on the Sport Blog.

After great success last year, we will be holding another Father’s/Grandfather’s Day breakfast this year. It will be on Friday September 4th. Information regarding how to book will be coming home this week.

All of these factors contribute to greater

academic opportunity for students in independent

schools and a lasting learning legacy

Research studies demonstrate four

key academic strengths of Australian independent schools

Four distinctive features of

independent schools support their

strong academic performance

ASSOCIATION OF HEADS OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS OF AUSTRALIA © 2015COLLEGIAL SUPPORT FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCHOOL LEADERSHIPWWW.AHISA.EDU.AU

ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY

On average, independent school students are up to 4 times more likely to complete Year 12.

They receive more university offers and are more likely to enrol in university or post-school training.

They are 2.8 times more likely to complete their university degree and 1.4 times more likely to complete post-graduate courses.

Research sources are listed on AHISA’s website at http://www.ahisa.edu.au/resources/ahisa-infographics/ahisa-infographic-1/

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCEAustralian independent school students rank #2 in reading and scientific literacy and #6 in mathematical literacy in international tests of 15-year-olds.

ACADEMIC GAINOn average, students in independent schools gain a ‘value add’ of 8 points on their tertiary entrance score, even after allowing for SES and student ability.

ACADEMIC EQUITYStudents of middle and lower ability demonstrate greater gain in independent schools.

ACADEMIC ETHOSAcademic environment is the most significant factor explaining the ‘value adding’ of independent schools.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR PROGRAMSStructured extracurricular programs supervised by adults are linked to higher academic performance and increased student engagement and motivation.

PARENTAL ENGAGEMENTParents’ attitudes to education and their child’s school positively affect student academic achievement.

TEACHING QUALITYTeaching excellence is the single most powerful influence on student academic achievement after student ability.

PASTORAL CARE

Good relationships between students and

their teachers, and students’ social and emotional

competencies, facilitate greater wellbeing and better school performance.

To assist students with special needs who are attempting the Higher School Certificate. Approximately 20 or more volunteers are required….

What are we requesting you to do? “Adopt A Child” which involves reading the examination paper for the student whenever they sit an exam and possibly writing the answers that are dictated to you by the student. Why do we do this? Some students, as a result of medical, intellectual or physical problems, are assigned special provisions by the Board of Studies to allow these students to perform at their full potential when sitting these extremely important examinations. As an alternative, you could volunteer for a period of time, e.g. a whole day or part thereof, a single examination, and so on. Who can help? If you are a competent reader, and can write legibly, you may be eligible, as long as you are not a relative of the student you are assisting, currently (or previously) employed as a teacher or tutor at the school, employed by the school in any non-teaching capacity or have a close relative sitting the same tests at another centre. What reader/writers are not required to do? Explain or interpret the examination paper, direct the student in any manner, be expected to spell difficult or obscure words, break confidence with the individual student they are assisting in regard to being sensitive to the student’s special needs. What we promise to do Support and train you, as you serve our student population. Invite you to a school orientation and morning tea, where you can ask questions and meet others, like yourself, who will be assisting. If you can help Contact Mrs Elinor Zagorac (PA to the Deputy Principal High School) on the school phone number 9608 2277. Many thanks as you consider this very real need in the school.

A large variety of food stalls and outside entertainment will be provided before the show and at intermission, so come early, have dinner or lunch and stay for the show. This makes for a great

night or day out for all the family. This production is something unique and warrants an invitation to friends and grandparents as well. All food sales this year will go towards fundraising for our school.
