From the Acting PrincipalDear Parents and Caregivers,
The start of a new adventure whether it is a new job, new home, sleepover, camp, holiday, new school, a new teacher or new classmates bring
about many dierent feelings and emotions no matter how young or old you are. Everyone needs some type of routine to provide a sense of
security and get things done.
We often fear the unknown and although change is a learning opportunity, it can also be stressful. A normal routine brings comfort and
consistency. Daily routines might include: - the time to get ready for school in the morning, bath time, mealtimes, bedtime, housework, cooking
and cleaning schedules, play time, family time, lunchtime, recess time, learning time and outdoor play. Consistent routines help with many day-to-
day basics. It bonds people together, when we know what to expect and notice regular social activities, we begin to understand what’s important
and helps develop friendships. When we know what to expect, stress and anxiety is reduced, condence and independence is increased and we
feel a sense of empowerment. The development and practice of routines also leads to better time management, organisation, self-discipline and
stability especially in times of change or stress.
Routines are important for children both at home and at school. Working together to establish, develop and practice routines your children, our
students will be given the best opportunity to learn, develop friendships and skills that will be invaluable throughout their life. “It takes a village to
teach a child”
We look forward to meeting with you on Tuesday night at our Acquaintance Night and working with you and your child/ren throughout the year.

Kind Regards,

My name is “Palmy” I am an orang-utan. I enjoy spending my time with the class who recycles
the most recyclable 10c containers because this supports our school value of sustainability.
Mr G-no-meMy name is Mr G-no-me. I like to spend my time in the class that takes care in keeping their
yard area clean and tidy. This supports our school value of integrity.
SustainabilityBe a “Nude Food Dude” and pack a litter free lunch to support our value of Sustainability.
In our waste-lled lives, it’s important to do what we can to decrease the waste we’re
contributing to the landll. Litter free means only packing items that can be composted or
recycled and that won’t end up in the garbage bin. That means, no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip
lock bags and no packaged foods.
Following these rules can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. First, you’ll need some containers – a
lunch box with a variety of compartments works well or purchase a few smaller containers to
hold dierent snacks.
R - 5 SwimmingReception to Year 5 students will be attending swimming lessons at Noarlunga Leisure Centre
in Term 1, Week 4 ( Monday February 18 - Friday February 22).

Science Term 1 OverviewDear Parents/Caregivers,
Hoping all families are as excited to be back at school as I am and had a very relaxing break! For
those who haven’t met me, my name is Danni Gericke and I am continuing to teach Science
through an integrated STEM approach this year. For the rst initial 2 weeks we are building on
our social skills by participating in STEM challenges that require students to think critically and
creatively, whilst communicating and collaborating with their new classmates. Each year level
has their own challenge they are working on. We will also be spending some time getting to
know our robotics equipment within the school including Beebots, Lego WeDo, Ozobots and
Spheros which will equip our skills and knowledge for use in future lessons.
In regards to the science curriculum, all year levels will be tuning in on the learning area of
physical sciences. Please see below the learning objectives and learning outcomes for each year
level:
Rec/Year 1’s: Properties of materials
Learning Outcome: The way objects move depends on a variety of factors, including their size
and shape
Year 2’s: Changing materials / properties of materials
Learning Outcome: Light and sound are produced by a range of sources and can be sensed
Year 3/4: Changing states of matter
Learning Outcome: Heat can be produced in many ways and can move from one object to
another
Year 4/5 and 5/6: Light and Shadows
-
Learning Outcome: Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reected and
refracted
Year 6/7: Electricity
Learning Outcome: Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reected and

Safer Internet DaySafer Internet Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the safe and positive use of digital technology, and to explore the role we can all
play in creating a better and safer internet in our community.
Coordinated by the Oce of the eSafety Commissioner in Australia and celebrated in over 130 countries, this year’s Safer Internet Day theme is:
‘Together for a better internet’.
We are encouraging all Australians to collaborate with their communities and support each other in developing the critical skills required to
successfully navigate the online world.
These skills take time to develop but they can help us in all areas of life - online and o. We like to call them the 4Rs…
Respect - I treat myself and others the way I like to be treated
Responsibility - I am accountable for my actions and I take a stand when I feel something is wrong
Reasoning - I question what is real
Resilience - I get back up from tough situations
Thiele Primary School is supporting Safer Internet Day and we encourage you to join in!
Help spread the word and raise awareness about the importance of a safer and more positive internet—you can participate in, run your own Safer
Internet Day activity or simply start a conversation in your community about the 4Rs and how you can come ‘Together for a better internet’.
To see what others are doing, or to nd out how you can get involved, visit esafety.gov.au/saferinternetday

AN EXCITING NEW CAMPUS PROGRAMThis year, Campus will be oering a physical intervention program that focuses on the
development of balance, eye tracking and coordination, body awareness, locomotion and tness
for identied students. The program is designed to develop children’s perception, through
multiple movement perceptual movement stations, directed by an SSO/ESO and teacher. The
program should be viewed as a preventative and a holistic approach to developing transferable
and lifelong skills that will enhance their condence in the PHYSICAL world. Students selected
will participate in 4 key stations twice a week and will be assessed at the end of a 10-week
period.

Campus Performing Arts Program2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Performing Arts on Campus. All of our students are
involved in a dynamic program of Performing Arts classes, and there are also a range of
wonderful extra-curricular experiences students from all three schools will be involved in.
Additionally, we oer some fantastic Performing Arts ensembles, Instrumental lessons, and
Advanced Music classes as per the opportunities outlined below. We look forward to seeing
your children get involved!
Campus Performing Arts groups and ensembles
All groups/ensembles start in Week 3 - all interested students please meet in the Performing
Arts Centre at the designated time. The rst 2 sessions are “Come and Try”, so no commitment
needed!!!
-
Junior Choir (Wednesday 10.05-10.50am)
This year Junior Choir will be open to Year 3-4 students. Each year we have an enthusiastic
group of students who learn a fun repertoire whilst learning new singing, ensemble and
performance skills. Students who continue past the rst two ‘Come and Try’ sessions are
expected to commit to Junior Choir for the full year – they will have the opportunity to perform
at Performing Arts Showcase, school assemblies, and community events throughout the year.
Fees are kept very low at only $20 for the full year, which includes all repertoire and
administration.
Senior Choir (Wednesday 1.30-2.20pm)
This year Senior Choir will be a voluntary ensemble, as distinct from a compulsory choir for Year
6s as it has been in previous years. Year 5-7 students will have the opportunity to be involved,
learning choral skills and rehearsal techniques through exploring this year’s Festival of Music
repertoire. They will have the opportunity to perform at the Southern Metropolitan Music
Festival at Hopgood Theatre, and the Adelaide Festival of Music at the Adelaide Festival Theatre
(Thiele students only). Campus supports the choir nancially, providing repertoire books and
CDs at no cost to participants. A commitment to participating for the rst 3 terms is required,
with optional attendance after the festivals nish (late term 3/early Term 4).
Year 5-7s: Campus Band (Thursday 12.10-12.50pm)
Campus Band is open to Year 5-7 students who are learning to play an instrument, and have
achieved a reasonable playing and note-reading standard to enable them to participate in an
ensemble of this nature. Students are involved in learning a wide range of repertoire and play a
range of instruments including keyboard, guitar, ute, drums/percussion, clarinet, violin and
oboe. Fees are kept very low at only $20 for the full year, which includes all repertoire and
administration.
Drama Club (Wednesday lunchtimes)
Drama Club is open to Year 5-7 students, who work with Lauren Hood to develop their acting
skills through a range of drama games and activities. There are also opportunities to be
involved in the technical aspects of stagecraft, sound and lighting, etcetera, later in the year
when the Drama Club prepare for their annual performance in Term 4. All students are
expected to commit to a full-year’s participation if they are selected to be involved in the nal
production.
Campus Dance Troupe (Monday lunchtimes)
Troupe is open to Year 5-7 students with an interest in dance and movement. Students involved
learn elements of dance, choreography ideas and concepts, and routines that are then
performed at Performing Arts Showcase and other events throughout the school year. As with
all of our ensembles, attendance at all rehearsals and a commitment to the full year’s
participation is required. Depending on numbers of interested students, auditions may be
conducted to select students who will be oered a place for the year.
Advanced Music (Thursday lunchtimes)
Advanced Music classes are open to continuing and new students in grades 5-7 who show
exceptional musical potential and/or interest. We focus on developing students’ musical
notation and theoretical skills, which enhances their instrumental/vocal lessons and practice,
-
and lays the foundation for participating in music at an advanced level over the years to come.
Classes are usually by invitation only (at the recommendation of our Instrumental Music sta)
however, if you would like your student to be involved please email me their name, year level
and school, and musical experience at your earliest convenience.
Instrumental Music lessons
We hosted an Instrumental Assembly on Thursday of Week 1, which gave our students the
opportunity to learn about and hear the range of instruments and teachers we oer on
Campus. Interested students were given our Instrumental Program Booklet to take home to
parents and caregivers - this outlines our program including costs, enrolment forms (for new
students), etc. We have had a strong start to the year in terms of student numbers, which are
seeing a steady growth across most instruments. Whilst we have had some issues to iron out
with new DECD requirements regarding the teaching of instrumental lessons on-site, our
students, sta and parents have been in very supportive and adaptable as this process is
undertaken.
