Bottom Times from your President

As my tenure as President comes to a close in September, I realized I

have so many people to thank for their countless hours serving on the board

these past 5 years, helping with meetings, organizing BBQ’s and hosting

parties at their homes, just to name a few. All of which has made my tenure

as President so enjoyable and rewarding. I admit, it is hard for me to step

down but clearly it is time to pass the torch and encourage new ideas and

opportunities for our club to continue to grow. Not to worry, I will now have

the fine distinction of being the “Past-President” and join an amazing group of

members who have lead this great club over the years.

There are too many people to name them all in this newsletter but I do

hope we have a full house at our August Meeting so I can personally thank

you. (hint hint)

Now for some presidential thoughts.

Our warm water trip to Roatan was awesome

for 8 members and 8 friends of the club. A full

week diving at an amazing tropical resort

(bathing suit cover-ups & flip flops were

considered dressed up), the diving was

wonderful with great visibility and lots of critters

(even on those days after our warm rain

storms); the dolphins delighted, the cabins

were cozy and the Treehouse restaurant was a

delight. My only regret is we weren’t able to

get more of you to join us. Mike Doyon has

much more to share at our August meeting so

please plan on joining us – I don’t want to be a

Refugio BBQ The Annual - once a year..…..

Channel Islands Divers Picnic and general good time event. Refugio State Beach on Saturday, September the 9th.

The club will be providing as always, in no particular order and not limited to, the water, cups to

hold said water, lemonade and cups to hold it too, salt/pepper, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, the

always yummy tri-tip, the juicy chicken and that mouth watering bratwurst BBQ’d by our own crew of

food aficionados led by the one and only, Robert Soriano, a grilling perfectionist. It was once said there

was a time he thought he’d made a mistake while BBQing, turns out, thinking he made a mistake was

the only thing anyone could say he did wrong that day. All attendee’s bring a side dish for sharing.

For your dining pleasure the club is providing all sorts of tasty bread, toasted tasty finger licking

good garlic bread. We also provide an excellent choice of some of the finest paperware plates and the

napkins available befitting the shorts and t-shirt culture gathered here and filling out your table setting,

we got utensils, the complete set mind you, also brought to you by your club. With clean hands and full

plates, you got to have the proper utensils. We’re not just divers, we’re civilized, well mannered divers.

Oh ya, we be cultured by golly.

All club members in attendance will be the recipient of one free ticket for the much anticipated

door prize drawing. No tickets will be sold giving every club member in attendance that hand crafted,

smoothed over level playing field. Now you got the same chance as that guy that’s always winning, always!

Refugio has fantastic facilities (store, showers, bathrooms and a great beach). It’s a great place to launch kayaks or paddle boards from, beach comb or just layout and relax.

Yes, there is a plan for a group dive. Important stuff - we plan to get in the water

by 9:30am. I have it on good authority the Mike Doyon Scooter Armada will be their in full

force. There ’s a limited number of these fun little underwater vehicles so get there early to

grab yours. Or get there late and pay off one of the early bird for theirs. We take cash. We ’ll

meet up at the East end of the Park. For those that didn ’t pay close attention in their PADI

navigation course, walk right up to the waters edge, keep the parking lot behind you and the

ocean in front, look to your left and point.

Head that way.

If your diving, there are 2 main reefs to dive at Refugio. The first is a bit of a swim and is straight out

from the parking lot. It is a low lying ledge type reef with plenty to see. The depth is about 20-30 feet

deep and the average vis. is 10-15 feet (it can be better but don’t bank on it).

The other reef runs parallel to the East end of the beach. You know, the walk up, face the water,

point left one. To get to the nice area of this reef requires a walk (long if you want to get to the best

area), but not a long swim. This reef has big tall ledges, kelp and much to see. The depths here range

from 15-25 feet deep and the average vis. is about 10-15 feet. It is well worth the walk.

If all goes well we should be finished, cleaned up and back to the BBQ with plenty of time for socializing

before the feasting begins.

Bottom Times (continued)

Mike Cunningham has sent out many emails and Facebook posts regarding our upcoming

Refugio BBQ Picnic on September 9th – If you have missed them you are clearly ‘unplugged’ - so

please let him know if you plan to attend. Whether it is a 3 day camping trip or a day at the beach for a

picnic, this is one of our best events all year. Families are welcome, just let us know how many and

bring a dish to share.

For all our photographers in the club, please accept this as your REMINDER to find those

special photos and enter the contest. Remember, if you are a novice and never won an entry in our

club before, you can submit photos into your own special category for ‘Wide Angle/Underwater’ &

‘Macro/Underwater’. We also have ‘Above Water/Scuba Related’ and ‘Video’ (one minute clip or less)

to round out the 4 categories. Please see details in this newsletter (page 4) or ask any of the board

members for the Photo Contest Rules and sign-up sheet. All Entries are due to Karen Duran no later

than our OCTOBER 18th Dive Club meeting or email to [email protected]. You still

have time so get out there and Shoot!

And finally, I must close with another reminder that our Vice President/Speaker Seeker position

has no nominations at this time. While all positions are open during elections, there are nominations

for every category except this one. What a great

opportunity to connect with people in the dive community

all over Southern California and tell the story of our great

club. Guest speakers are always positively surprised at

the size of our club and friendships we share. Think

about it and ask any board member for more information.

Nomination forms will be on your tables at the August

meetings.

Until then, Happy Diving

pool dives and skill demonstration in the ocean, both from a boat and from the shore and

takes 3 days to complete. The course is scheduled for early October over 2 weekends

covering a 3 week period. The schedules are very flexible to meet the needs of the group.

only $550. (Couples can share the course for only $500 per person)

* PADI Recue Divers are required to have a current first aid and CPR certificate prior to

the August Kayak dive

C H A N N E L I S L A N D S D I V E R S W W W . C H A N N E L I S L A N D S D I V E R S . O R G 9

There’s MUD at Refugio

Speaking about kayak diving…..the next and last one for the summer season will happen on

August 19 at Refugio State Beach. The main parking lot on the west end opens at 7:30am,

that’s when we start arriving.

We need to show some dive support for these type of events to continue.

We try to get in the water by about 8:30 but it’s a rather casual event with a low

pressure, relaxed type of approach for the day meant for diving and picnic dinning all

wrapping up and gone by around 1ish. Yes, the picnic part means there’s a BBQ. We are

after all outside, at a state park, on a sunny beach just steps from the water, right next to a

BBQ pit and picnic table. It would be wrong not to.

Has the idea of kayak diving been swimming around in your head for awhile and you

just never had a way exercise those demons? You know what happens when those demons

aren’t exercised regularly! We might have a fix for you now! There’s no guaranty it’ll work

but you’ll have a heck of a time either way.

Does the idea of loading all your expensive pretty gear on a large piece of plastic,

making your way thru the sandy surf while praying you don’t lose or damage any of it give

you the creeps, you know, cold sweats and those long sleepless nights. Therapy is

expensive, doesn't work all the time and not always a lot of fun.

Give this a try, leave your pretty gear at home and come to Refugio for the day and

rent a kayak from MUD. You don’t have to load the kayak, carry it or clean one. Just try the

kayaking part, not the diving half. Go out and follow the bubble made by others. Your pretty

gear is safe at home and your having the time of your life and that’s before the food!

So much cheaper than traditional therapy and a heck of a lot more fun, and you’ll get

fed, at a BBQ, on a sunny day at the beach, with friends. You’ll never hear someone walk out

of a session talking like that!

Show up, bring your own gear and kayak or you can rent any or all from Mavericks

Undersea Divers but showing up is where it starts.

Last month we had a whooping 6, maybe 9 inches of surf. Easy peasy. Getting out was

a cake walk.

It’s not that tough, it’s local and about as close to free as you can get at a Southern

California event. Really! Drive yourself, rent everything you need, worse case your out

around $45 + gas. And your diving with friends at a beach in sunny California.
