A bronze statue of Pope John Paul II is to beunveiled at the St. Thomas Cathedral in SanThome on Sunday, May 11. The brief ceremonywill be conducted by the Papal Nuncio in India,who doubles up as the ambassador of the Vatican.

The full-size statue has already been erectedin a nook on the northern side of the mainentrance to the cathedral. It was donated by thePapal Nuncio’s office in New Delhi.

This event comes in the wake of Pope Francis declaring inRome recently, the late Pope John Paul II as saint, along withanother former Pope, John XXIII.

Following the declaration of sainthood, it was decided toinstall the statues of Pope John Paul at the places he hadvisited on his 1986 tour of India.

Back then, Pope John Paul had prayed at the cathedral,visited the place which is considered to be the first tomb ofapostle Thomas and had celebrated Holy Mass on the Marinabeach, behind Gandhi statue.

The May 11 event at the cathedral will take place justbefore the 9.45 a.m. Holy Mass, said Fr Charles,a priest at the cathedral.

How can one family in a neighbourhoodcater to a senior citizen couple in the sameneighbourhood?

It focuses on the subject of catering food to seniorswho live all by themselves and do not have the facilityor the energy to cook their meals day after day.

Many people depend on local caterers but theexperience seems to be mixed. The quality of food cankeep changing, the door delivery service can get erraticand the prices keep going up from time to time.

And the list of local catering services is limited; sois the choice.

So can we try out an idea that may work?And what is that idea?If there is a family in Abhiramapuram or in

San Thome which is willing to offer the breakfast andthe lunch that they cook for themselves to a couple or asenior who is in need of home-made food, this familycould make public its offer in the local newspaperor on an online space.

And senior citizens who live in the area where theservice is offered could either walk down two streetsand pick up the tiffin-carrier or arrange for it to bepicked up.

In short, the idea is for one family to help another inthe same area without too many strings attached to thearrangement.

The argument for this idea is that the quality of foodis guaranteed since it is cooked at home and thatseniors need small quantities and simple foodeveryday.

Is this an idea that can work?One thing is sure - the community of senior citizens

is large in our neighbourhood. Many have madearrangements for their health and financial needs. But anumber of them want a reliable person or place whichcan provide them home-made food.

Seniors have a check list of the local pharmaciesand clinics, grocery and vegetable stores, taxi and autodrivers, doctors and nurses. But how do we create inthe community a bank of people we can call when theneed is severe?

Garbage greets people at gates ofMandaveli park

Many people make use of the Chennai Corporation parknear the Airtel Head Office in San Thome. But they have toendure the ugly sight and nasty odour from the garbage binwhich has been placed near the entrance of the park.

This bin overflows with garbage everyday and if the waste isnot cleared then the place is strewn with garbage. Street dogshang around this bin and all this is not a welcome sight for themany people who come to the park for their daily walks or toget some fresh air.

Can the local officers of Chennai Corporation find a way tosolve this issue?

Request to bank; be more courteous pleaseI have been transacting at the Indian Bank branch situated near St.John’s

School and I have noticed that the staff are not courteous to their customers.They do not seem to be of great help to senior citizens too. On some

occasions I have seen the bank staff turn away from the seniors and attend tothe next customer.

We expect a leading nationalised bank to be customer-friendly and treatseniors with dignity.

Demolition of houses, buildings in colonies;state agencies must issue guidelines

Recently, a three-storeyed building on 5th Street in Luz Avenue wasdemolished in phases using heavy machinery. This generated a lot of dust thatpolluted the air and also generated much noise over days. The work went onwithout a break till the police who arrived at the spot cautionedthe contractor.

State agencies like Chennai Corporation and TN Pollution Control Boardmust draw up guidelines for such demolitions in neighbourhoods where thedensity of residences is high.

Scaffoldings must be pucca, the demolition area must be cordoned off insuch a way that dust and stones do not get into neighbouring places and workmust stop at 6 p.m on weekdays and there should be no work undertaken onSundays and holidays so that people living in the area are not disturbed.

‘Free for all’ on Royapettah High RoadThe one-way traffic system in Luz and Mylapore has contributed to the

worst forms of traffic violations on Royapettah High Road and these cancause serious accidents and maim people. This is because many motoristsviolate the ‘one way’.

The worst violations can be witnessed at evening peak hour time at theSanskrit College - Thiruvalluvar statue - Sri Anjaneyar Temple sections.

Motorists from the side streets/ lanes and from M. K. Amman Koil Streetdrive in and out from all sides making it very risky for those who follow theone-way system.

If the Traffic Police chose to implement this system then why are theofficers not charging these violators on the spot? Only strict enforcement andheavy penalties will discipline the violators.

How can Mylaporeans help seniors in needof home made food get it easily?

Presently, a section of senior citizens dependon local caterers to source their daily requirementsof food.

But there are a few problems - 1. The quality/quantity is not satisfactory. 2. Periodically pricesare increased. 3. Supply is erratic.

Perhaps there is a better solution that someonecan provide to seniors?

I recall that for the Mylapore Festival, theorganisers introduced a concept of Mylapore families offeringtraditional sapad to guests for a fee. This idea seems to have hada good response.

Can someone explore this concept further to suit the dailyneeds of senior Mylaporeans?

Here is my idea - Suppose we have a resident ofSunderarajan Street, Abhiramapuram who needs food to besupplied regularly.... his need is best served by a family living inthe same area.

The two can sign up at mutually agreed terms and conditionsagainst payment. In this scenario, those in need of food gethome made food and get it locally. This could also be a seniorcitizens-friendly idea at work.

This is just an idea. Mylapore Times can play a role inconnecting seniors and hosts. Perhaps, the idea can be refined.
