The annual Thai poosam teppam (float festival) of Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple, Mylapore will be held from February 8 to 10. Preparations for the celebration will begin soon.

A huge float will be specially constructed for the three-day festival, that is dedicated to lord Singaravelar.

On Feb. 8, lord Kapaleeswarar and god-dess Karpagambal will be placed on the float and taken around inside the temple tank five times.

On Feb. 9 and 10, lord Singaravelar along with goddesses Valli and Deivanai will be placed in the float and the float will make seven and nine rounds respectively.

The Vedas and the Thevaram will be recited and classical music will be performed in the float as it does the rounds inside the tank. Only a few guests will be allowed to enter the float and sit inside it as it does the rounds.

The water that the tank now holds seems good enough for the float to eas-ily make the rounds. Said a temple staff, “Unlike last year, this time as the tank has lots of water, the float will be able to move alongside the temple steps.”

This water level in the tank rose late last year after the temple took steps to direct the rainwater that fell on its prem-ises into the tank. In addition, water from

the stormwater drains on the mada streets surrounding the temple was also let into the tank.

On all three days of the teppam, the event will start after 6.30 p.m. All gates of the tank will be kept open for the public to sit on the steps of the tank and watch the float.

1. FOSTERING CHRISTIAN UNITY

This event had only one intention - to foster unity among the various denominations of the Christian faith. Held last weekend, it was hosted by Fr. T. Anthony Raj, parish priest of Our Lady of Visitation Church, Abhiramapuram at this church. Themed ‘Christian Unity Octave’, this event witnessed the participation of pastors representing different Christian denominations such as CSI, ECI, Anglican, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist churches. The vicar-general of the archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore, Fr. J. Maria Amalaraj was a special guest.

2. MEET FOR ALUMNI OF DON BOSCO INSTITUTIONS

The 51st edition of the meeting of the alumni of Don Bosco institutions of Chennai province was held on January 19 at St. Bede’s Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School campus in San Thome. The day started with a thanksgiving Mass and ended with fellowship and lunch. A blood donation camp was held alongside. Chennai province covers north Tamil Nadu Salesian campuses. Over 175 alumni attend-ed this event. Members who are deeply involved in social and community work were recognised as were the outstand-ing alumni units of the province.

J. Satish is the province president, Stafford Mantel is province secretary and Fr. Gerald Miranda is the province delegate.

3. THIRUVALLUVAR DAY

Thiruvalluvar Day celebrations were held at the temple in Mylapore dedicated to this celebrated poet and philosopher best known for the Thiru-kural, on January 16 morning. Children who did well in competitions based on the Thiru-kural were given prizes. The children and others then went in a procession and garlanded the Thiruvalluvar statue located inside a traffic island off Royapettah High Road, Mylapore.

Isshinryu Karate School participated in kata, kumite and kobudo events and won medals.

The school also received the championship trophy for the maximum number of gold medals won at the

tournament. The chief guest was Hanshi Christopher Chase from USA.

5. POTS AND PLANTS

The members of R. A. Puram Residents Association (RAPRA) organised a camp in col-laboration with Tamilnadu Horticulture Department at the Corporation Park at Seventh Main Road, R. A. Puram recently. Stalls displaying different varieties of saplings, seeds, pots and fertilizers were put up.

In addition to handling the queries of the visitors, the officers also noted down

the needs of the residents and promised home delivery for items not on stock with them.

6. SRI IYYAPPA POOJA HELD

The Luz branch of Akhila Bharatha Iyyappa Seva Sangam celebrated their 22nd Sri Iyyappan laksharchanai recently at Madhava Perumal Vasan-tha kalyana mandapam, Mylapore.

The event started off with a ganapathi momam and a gho pooja. Later, a vilakku pooja was per-formed by 108 ladies followed by abhishekam, laksharchanai and deep-aradhanai. The event ended with an annadanam.

HERITAGE CHURCH IN LUZ TO OPEN AFTER RENOVATION

On January 25, Our Lady of Light Church in Luz will be formally opened after the extensive reno-vation that has been undertaken at this heritage church.

To mark the occasion, Rev. Dr. George Antho-nysamy, archbishop of Madras-Mylapore diocese will bless the church and its newly developed campus.

The event will be held at 5.45 p.m. Holy Mass will be said and a cultural programme will follow that evening.

The original church is said to be have been built in what was then a scrub forest area of the city in the early part of the 16th century. Historians believe that the church as it stands today must have been built later. The parish community here has taken a keen interest in the conservation of the heritage church.

Old housing blocks at Velleeswaran Thotam demolished: construction of new apartments to begin soonBy Our Staff Reporter

Contract workers of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) have been demolishing the old housing blocks the Board had built many years ago at Velleeswaran Thotam in R. A. Puram.

The Board proposes to build a new set of apartment blocks in the same parcel of land.

The head of contract workers at the site said that out of 13 blocks in this colony, nine have been demolished so far.

A senior manager in charge of this pro-ject says that each block will have only three floors as was the case in the old blocks and each block will have a lift. This updated plan must be a result of a rethink on the Board’s earlier plan to build many floors with no provision for lifts, a plan that was strongly

opposed by the residents.The construction is set to be completed in

18 months from now. Ahead of the demoli-tion, families at this colony were given a fixed amount of money and were asked to shift to rented houses till the construction of new blocks was completed.

However, some residents say that it has been difficult for them to ar-range for alternate rented housing. Says Muthumarijagan, a resident, “Many of the residents are domestic helpers and we are unable to manage the high rentals and the ad-vances that are demanded, so life has become diffi-cult.”

Some have had to seek private loans or sell or mortgage their jewels to raise money to fund the alternate accommodation. Many have been seeking accommodation in and around R. A. Puram so that access to schools and places of work is manageable.

Residents here told us that the rent for a small living space is Rs.8,000 and advance is around one lakh rupees. TNSCB also has plans to carry out similar reconstruction pro-jects in its colonies in Mylapore – in Kapali Thotam and in Visalakshi Thotam.

Nadasangamam, the music wing of Narada Gana Sabha Trust, Alwarpet is organising its annual Carnatic music work-shop at Thennangur village, outside Chennai from Feb. 7 to 9. This is a residential camp.

Interactive and lecture sessions will be conducted by senior artistes. Suguna Varadachari will teach songs of Gopalakrish-na Bharati while Baby Sreeram will focus on compositions of M. D. Ramanathan.

Dr. R. S. Jayalakshmi, Sikkil Gurucharan and Sumithra Vasudev will focus on ‘manodharma’ in music. There will be kolam design demonstration and guided kolam practicals by Gayatri Shankaranarayan at the Panduranga temple.

Hospet in north Karnataka is your base when you want to leisurely explore the Vijayanagara heritage of Hampi. It was during one recent tour of this area that I got an invitation to attend a school’s annual event.

The Salesian priests of the congregation founded by Don Bosco manage two campuses in this small town which is fringed by sprawling mining zones and large steel plants.

On one campus is a school, a centre for non-formal skills education and a hostel for children besides rice fields and a church.

The other campus is a more recent one - and has a school and accommodation for children who are either orphans or are of single parents or those whose guardians are very poor.

Keen to understand the socio-economic factors that influence the lives of the people of this part of Karna-taka, I decided to spend some time on the larger of the two campuses.

The centre for non-formal education offered training in tailoring and carpentry, computers and electrical skills. Boys and girls, mostly in their teens attended the classes conducted here.

So why did the Salesian priests start this centre?Because many teenagers in rural Karnataka who at-

tend schools up to Class 10 did not pursue education in PUC and in college simply because their families could not afford it. So many of them sought odd jobs locally or migrated to small towns in search of employment.

However, the teenagers who found their way to the Salesian-managed centre and attended these three-month long courses found employment and began to earn anywhere between Rs.12,000 and Rs.15,000 a month.

Managing this centre was a challenge - you needed a steady stream of funds. A bank was currently paying the salaries of the teaching staff and well-wishers of Hospet often dropped in to donate a bag of rice or wheat or sponsor the needs of a few hostelites.

While here, I also met a teacher at a local, private residential school who initiated a small effort to sup-port the hostelites. With the permission of her school management, she had accompanied a bunch of her school students to the Don Bosco campus. Having known beforehand the things that could be donated to the children, this students group not only gifted the hostelites bedsheets and hand-towels and soap but also arranged for high tea on the evening of their visit.

The effect of that singular visit has been very positive. Many students of this private school now celebrate their birthdays by visiting the Don Bosco campus, sharing snacks with the resident children and donating books and stationery or other essentials. And this community outreach has been going on quietly.

There are many schools in our own neighbour-hoods that can do with community support.

Some need people who can teach the children after school hours. Some welcome volunteers who can hold art or craft classes or host story-telling sessions. Or give motivational talks. Some need different forms of donations.

All we need to do is to spare time to visit these campuses and build a relationship. And sustain, in small ways a neighbourhood outreach initiative.

Remove barricades outside Sri Kapali Temple

This is with reference to a letter published in this section headlined ‘Managing movement of devotees on Pradosham days’. I fully concur with the views of the writer.

It is still not clear what was the real purpose in the management of Sri Kapali Temple raising bar-ricades in front of the east gopuram and leading to the temple’s mandapam.

As a result, the flower sellers have now taken over the space around the gopuram, people park their bikes and scooters outside the barricades and hence, movement by people and vehicles is restricted.

It would be in the interest of everyone if the temple authorities remove the barricade so as to allow the two wheelers to be parked in that area and decongest this area.

The condition of Bheemanna Garden Street in Abhiramapuram is really bad. The layers of the road have come off and there are lots of potholes making life difficult for people, especially senior citizens to walk on this busy road.

Mylapore Festival: dance dramas in open air is a good idea

It is indeed an amazing achieve-ment to host a cultural festival like the annual Mylapore Festival in the heart of Mylapore amidst all the routine activities that go on in this busy zone.

This year, the idea of having Bharatnatyam-based dance dramas on all days on the festival and in the open air was a good one for it allowed people from all walks of life to enjoy classical dance they do not have access to often.

These cultural shows transform the area outside Sri Kapali Temple and are welcome.

Mylapore Festival: suggestion for kolam contest event

The two kolam contests of the annual Mylapore Festival are perhaps the most awaited and grand events held on the weekend of this festi-val. We were present at the contest held on a Saturday and the range of kolams was amazing.

The specially made kolam fabric art trophy given to the winners was eye-catching too. This is a novel idea. May we suggest that the Festival organizers award certificates to all the kolam contest participants because each of them puts in a lot of effort to present great kolams.

On January 12, the vice president of India, M. Ven-kaiah Naidu inaugurated the year-long centenary celebrations of Sri Ram-akrishna Math’s Thamizh magazine called ‘Sri Ram-akrishna Vijayam’.

The event was held at Narada Gana Sabha, Alwarpet.

Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit and C. Vijaya Bhaskar, state minister for health and family welfare, were the guests of honour at this event. The benediction was given by swami Gauta-manandaji, vice president, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission,

Vice-president of India launches centenary celebration of Sri Ramakrishna Math’s Thamizh magazine

Belur, Kolkata.To mark this occasion,

ANNUAL JAYANTHI OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDAThe annual jayanthi of swami Vivekanan-
