We have prepared this guide to provide you with important information about how we operate and to help you get the most out of your courses. Our aim is to continually improve the products and services that we offer so if you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. If you are a new student we hope you enjoy studying with us and wish you success in your learning; if you are a returning customer, we thank you for your continued confidence in us. Please remember, while we are happy to hear your suggestions and clarify any doubts you may have, we reserve the right to restrict admission into the centre.

WhO WE ARE QUIéNES SOMOSMadrid Young Learners is part of the British Council, which is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for educational and cultural relations. Bienvenidos al curso académico 2012/2013 del British Council.

La mayoría de vosotros cursará en nuestro estudios en nuestro centro de Pº del General Martínez Campos pero me gustaría también saludar a aquellos alumnos y padres que cursarán estudios en nuestros centros satélite como Somosaguas, Villaviciosa y Segovia o en los colegios aso-ciados al British Council.

Este año es un año muy importante para el British Council en Madrid. Aquellos de vosotros que estuvisteis el año pasado con nosotros habréis podido observar los cam-bios en la apariencia que hemos experimentado (nuestra entrada de Martinez Campos está separada del resto de instalaciones por unas barreras metálicas y por ello hemos creado una nueva entrada y oficina de atención al cliente por la calle Fernández de la Hoz). Dentro de un tiempo podréis ver el motivo de estas obras cuando comence-mos a construir el nuevo edificio para el centro de adultos.

Las barreras metálicas y el sistema empleado para la salida y entrada al centro son muy importantes para mantener la seguridad de nuestros alumnos; por ello, me gustaría dar las gracias tanto a alumnos como a padres por su comprensión a la hora de ceñirse a esta normativa. Me gustaría pediros que prestéis atención a aquellos alumnos o padres nuevos en el centro y les recordéis qué entradas deben usar.

Tanto si es este su primer curso con nosotros, su décimo curso o si están intentando obtener algún título oficial como el First Certificate o el Advanced, por ejemplo (web: http://www.britishcouncil.org/spain/exams),les deseo que tengan éxito. Nuestros profesores se esforzarán al máximo para ayudaros así como el resto de empleados del centro, desde el equipo de atención al cliente y administración hasta el equipo de la biblioteca, sin olvidarnos del gran trabajo del equipo de limpieza, miembros de seguridad y porteros. Todos estamos trabajando para hacer posible una feliz y exitosa experiencia con nosotros.

Dear students and parents

Welcome to the 2012/2013 Academic Year at the British Council.

Most of you will be with us at Paseo General Martinez Campos but I also want to be sure to say hello and welcome to students and their parents who go to our

branches in Somosaguas, Villaviciosa and Segovia, as well as those of you in our partner schools around Madrid.

We are a large family and we get bigger every year. You can check where we are by looking at our website: http://www.britishcouncil.org/spain/english-courses

This year is a very important one for the British Council in Madrid. Those of you who were with us last year will have seen the changes in the appearance of the British Council – the appearance of large silver barriers separating our Martinez Campos entrance from the rest of the site and the creation of a new entrance and Reception on Calle Fernandez de la Hoz. Before very long you will be able to see what that’s all about as we begin the construction of a centre for Adult learners on our site.

The barriers and the systems for coming in and out of the building are very important for the safety of our students and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the vast majority of students and parents who have understood why we have asked them to stick to the rules. For new parents and students I would ask that you pay close atten-tion and remember which doors to use.

Whether this is your first year with us or your tenth, wheth-er you are starting out or working towards passing English language examinations (First Certificate or CAE for exam-ple.Website: http://www.britishcouncil.org/spain/exams ) I wish you every success. The teachers will be doing their very best to help and so will all my other colleagues, from the team in Customer Services and Administration to the dedicated staff in the Resource Centre, and let’s not for-get the constant hard work of our cleaners, security team and porters. Everyone here is working to make learning a happy and successful experience.

The students have a large part to play, let’s not forget.

We believe that young learners can best make progress in English when:

Each of our 100-hour courses represents one part of a programme of study that will assist your child in becoming proficient in English.

Normally students will pass to the next level at the end of a course unless their marks from continuous assessment and/or formal exams show they haven’t met the course objectives. In this case they will have to repeat the same level before they can progress further through the academic structure.

Cada uno de nuestros cursos de 100 horas representa una parte de un plan de estudios que ayudará a su hijo a dominar el inglés.

Normalmente los alumnos pasarán al siguiente nivel al término de un curso a menos que sus notas de evaluación continua y de los exámenes formales demuestren que no han alcanzado los objetivos del curso. En este caso tendrán que repetir el mismo nivel antes de que puedan seguir avanzando en la estructura académica.

In the academic year there are nine levels from senior 2 up to senior 10. Students continue to improve their accuracy in grammar and pronunciation, expand their vocabulary and develop their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. This is divided into 5 levels, starting with Pandas for five year-olds, Tigers for six year-olds and then Pink, Red and Yellow depending on individual student ability. In these levels lots of importance is given to the stimulation of the child’s oral and aural skills. One of our fundamental aims is to develop a positive attitude towards English as something enjoyable and we try to ensure that the children have a good time in class. There is a gradual introduction of more and more reading and writing.

This is divided into seven levels from elementary up to level 6 and while the students learn more grammar and vocabulary and continue to develop the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, there is a continued emphasis on oral communication. Continuous assessment tasks are integrated into normal lessons.

Se divide en 5 niveles, empezando con los Pandas para los alumnos de cinco años, los Tigers para los de seis años y luego Pink, Red y Yellow, dependiendo de la capacidad individual de los alumnos. En estos niveles se da mucha importancia a la estimulación de las aptitudes orales y auditivas del niño. Uno de nuestros objetivos fundamentales es desarrollar una actitud positiva hacia el inglés como algo divertido e intentamos asegurar que el niño se lo pase bien en clase. A medida que avanzan se va incorporando más lectura y escritura.

Se divide en siete niveles desde elementary hasta el nivel 6 y, aunque los alumnos aprenden más gramática y vocabulario y continúan desarrollando las aptitudes básicas de comprensión lectora, expresión escrita, expresión oral y comprensión oral, se incide más en la comunicación oral. Las tareas de evaluación continua forman parte de las clases normales.

El programa de los cursos de verano es el mismo que el del curso académico en cuanto a contenidos y metodología, pero se imparte de forma intensiva a lo largo de cuatro semanas durante cinco horas al día. Estos cursos se ofrecen a alumnos de entre nueve y dieciocho años. Los alumnos de siete a nueve años pueden asistir a nuestro centro de Somosaguas. Los alumnos que asistan a clase durante el curso académico y deseen realizar un curso de verano recibirán una recomendación de su profesor sobre el curso más adecuado para ellos. Los alumnos nuevos serán asignados a una clase partiendo de una prueba de nivel.

• Dada la naturaleza intensiva de estos cursos no recomendamos realizar más de uno a lo largo del verano.• También ofrecemos cursos especializados en verano (p. 20).

Hemos estructurado nuestro horario para atender las diferentes necesidades de nuestros alumnos teniendo en cuenta que todavía van al colegio. Nuestra prioridad es garantizar que todos los alumnos sean asignados a un grupo que corresponda con su edad y nivel pero no podemos garantizar que todos los niveles estén disponibles en todos los horarios.

We have structured our timetable to accommodate the different needs of our students bearing in mind they are still at school. Our priority is to ensure that all students are assigned to a group which corresponds to their age and level but we cannot guarantee that all levels are available at different times.

The summer course programmes are just the same as those for the academic year in terms of content and methodology, but take place over four intensive weeks for five hours a day. These courses are offered to students between nine and eighteen. Students aged between seven and nine can attend our Somosaguas centre. Students who attend the course during the academic year and wish to do a summer course will receive a recommendation from their teacher about which course would be most suitable for them. New students will be assigned to a level on the basis of a placement test.

At the end of each term parents have the opportunity to come and speak with the teacher to discuss their child’s progress. We publish student reports online and parents are able to access and print them at:

Evaluation of students’ progress is made based on exams and/or continuous assessment and at the end of each course students need to have demonstrated a satisfactory level to go into the next level. If a student has not achieved an average of at least six they will have to repeat the same course. While every effort is made to avoid students repeating levels, at times it is in the best interest of the students to ensure our high standards are maintained.

La evaluación del progreso de los alumnos se realiza en base a los exámenes y a la evaluación continua y al término de cada curso los alumnos necesitan haber demostrado un nivel satisfactorio para pasar al siguiente nivel. Si un alumno no ha logrado una media de seis tendrá que repetir el mismo curso. Aunque hacemos todo lo posible para evitar que los alumnos repitan niveles, a veces es en el propio interés de los alumnos y para garantizar que se mantienen nuestros propios estándares rigurosos.

¿Cómo ponerse en contacto con el profesor de su hijo?

How to get in touch with your child’s teacher?

As the teachers have only ten or fifteen minutes between classes to prepare material and change rooms, it can be very difficult for them to talk to you at these times. However, our teachers are very happy to discuss your child’s progress with you at more suitable times and we invite you to arrange a meeting by calling our customer services department on 91 337 3593.

Alternatively, you may like to write a note for the teacher in you child’s notebook on the ‘página de contacto con el profesor’.

cOMMUNIcAtIONWe have various means of keeping in touch with the parents of our students to ensure you are well-informed about the centre and your child’s progress in the classes. These include:

In all British Council centres, health and safety are of the upmost importance. Every course we organise fire drills and inform our students about the evacuation routes in case of emergency.

Whenever there are classes in the centre we always have a nurse on hand to attend to children. We would be grateful if new students could inform him / her of any specific health issues on 91 337 3604 / 680 426 125.

The British Council coordinates with the British Embassy to guarantee the security of staff and customers. Although it may be sometimes tedious, the control of people entering the premises is fundamental to maintaining a minimum level of security. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience that this may suppose and remember that it is for the benefit of everyone.

Please write a short note in your child’s notebook. They should show this to the teacher and client services who will stamp it. Without this stamp the security guards will not allow a student to leave the premises.

If a student is finding a class too easy or difficult, the first person to talk to is the teacher. They will decide if your child should see a senior teacher who will give him / her a level test and get in touch with the parents to inform them of the result. If a student has attended a course outside the British Council or abroad and feels they have advanced significantly, they can request a level test to see if they have reached a sufficient level to go into the next course.

At the British Council we do everything possible to ensure that classes always have the same teacher. If for some reason this is not possible, we try to make sure that classes have the same substitute teacher. Although we do all we can to ensure consistency in the substitution of classes, sometimes circumstances beyond our control, e.g. illness, make this impossible.

Groups are formed based on levels assigned either following level tests or the recommendation of the teacher of the previous course. We also try to make sure that students in a class are of as similar an age as possible. We cannot comply with requests to ensure that students are placed with their friends in certain groups due to both the size of the centre and our belief that meeting new students forms an important part of personal development and maturity.

Students follow courses of preparation for Cambridge exams in the following levels:

Level 6 – Preparation for the First Certificate in English (FCE)

Level 8 – Preparation for the Cambridge Advanced in English (CAE)

Level 10 – Preparation for the Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)

The vast majority of our students are well-behaved and there are few problems of discipline. If there is a problem, the teacher will take a student to a manager who will issue a verbal warning and inform parents if they deem it necessary. In more serious cases parents will be invited to the centre to help find a solution to a problem. Only in extreme cases will we be obliged to expel or suspend students depending on the seriousness of the situation.

En todos los centros del British Council el tema de seguridad e higiene es de suma relevancia. En cada curso realizamos simulacros de incendios e informamos a los alumnos sobre las rutas de salida en caso de emergencia.

Siempre que hay clases en el centro contamos con una enfermera para atender a los alumnos. Agradecemos que los alumnos que asisten al centro por primera vez y tienen algún problema de salud se pongan en contacto con nuestra enfermería en el teléfono 913 373 604 o en el móvil 680 426 125.

El British Council está coordinado con la Embajada Británica para garantizar la seguridad a sus clientes y empleados. Aunque en ocasiones puede ser tedioso, el control de las personas que acceden a nuestras instalaciones es fundamental para mantener un nivel mínimo de seguridad. Rogamos disculpen las molestias que esta norma les pueda suponer, pero recuerden que es en beneficio de todos.

Por favor, escriba una nota en el cuaderno del alumno. El alumno deberá mostrarla al profesor y en la oficina de Atención al Cliente se la sellarán. Sólo así el guardia de seguridad le permitirá salir del centro.

Si un alumno encuentra un nivel demasiado fácil o difícil, la primera persona con la que debe hablar es con su profesor. Éste decidirá si su hija/o debe hablar con un profesor senior para que le evalúe de nuevo y nos pondremos en contacto con los padres para informarles del resultado. Si el alumno asiste a un curso en otro centro que no pertenece al British Council o en el extranjero y cree que ha avanzado bastante, puede solicitar una prueba de nivel para saber si ha alcanzado un nivel suficiente para pasar al siguiente curso.

En el British Council hacemos todo lo posible para garantizar que las clases siempre tengan el mismo profesor. Si por alguna razón esto no fuera posible, intentamos asegurarnos de que las clases tengan el mismo profesor sustituto. Si bien hacemos todo lo posible para garantizar la coherencia en la sustitución de las clases, a veces circunstancias que están fuera de nuestro control, por ejemplo una enfermedad, hacen que esto no sea posible.

Los grupos se forman teniendo en cuenta el nivel asignado en la prueba de nivel o en el caso de los alumnos de cursos anteriores, el nivel indicado por el profesor al finalizar el curso anterior. También intentamos que los alumnos de una clase tengan una edad lo más parecida posible. No podemos atender a las peticiones para garantizar que los alumnos estén con sus amigos en determinados grupos debido al tamaño del centro y a nuestra convicción de que conocer a nuevos alumnos forma una parte importante del desarrollo y la madurez personal.

Los alumnos realizan cursos de preparación para los exámenes de Cambridge en los siguientes niveles:

Nivel 6 – Preparatorio del First Certificate in English (FCE)

Nivel 8 – Preparatorio del Cambridge Advanced in English (CAE)

La mayoría de los alumnos tiene un buen comportamiento y sólo en contadas ocasiones surgen problemas de disciplina. En estos casos el profesor llevará al alumno ante la dirección del centro y el alumno recibirá un aviso verbal y se informará a los padres si se considera necesario. En los casos más serios nos reuniremos con los padres para intentar buscar una solución al problema. Sólo en casos extremos nos veremos obligados a expulsar al alumno temporal o indefinidamente dependiendo de la gravedad de la situación.
