Hi all,
It was a shame to see the BBC proms event called off earlier this month particularly as a huge effort had gone into making it a key part of the Borough’s events Calendar but it was fantastic to see The Tour of Britain event arrive in the Town.
Covering about 90 miles (so I was told) from Welshpool to Caerphilly is no mean feat - I get saddle sore driving that far in my car - and the Cyclists looked as if they had hardly broken into a sweat, incredible! Hats off to all involved in marshalling the event as the road closures were kept to a minimum.
In the What’s on guide this month you will fi nd a notice from Caerphilly Scouts as they start the preparation of their Christmas Post campaign.
It only costs 17p to send a Christmas Card with them so you will save a bundle as well as raising money for a great cause.
Next month is our fi rst Christmas events guide so please get your listing in early if you want to be included - it’s going to be a packed issue.
Best Wishes
Paul

Bardic Writers’ Circle CompetitionThe aim of the competition is to raise funds to enable the Circle to publish an anthology of its work. The Bardic Writers’ Circle comprises of men and women drawn from all walks of life, all with a story to tell.
Based at the ancient town of Caerphilly, with its medieval castle, itself built on the site of an old Roman fortress, both of which were built to subjugate our ancestors the Celts, therefore, with that in mind we assumed the name ‘The Bardic Writers’ Circle,’ for it was the Bards that were the story tellers of the Celtic nations.
Some of our members are both post graduate and undergraduate students all eager to see their work in print. We meet once a month at the local fi re station courtesy of the South Wales Fire Authority, where we discuss and workshop our writing in an eff ort to improve.
Radio Wales have already shown an interest in our work and plan to record one of our sessions for their programme entitled, ‘The Art Show.’
You can read about our competition judge Professor Christopher Meredith on the circles website.
Chris is a Welsh speaking professor who lectures in Poetry and Creative Writing at the University of Glamorgan, Wales. Entry forms are on their way to the many poetry societies throughout the four countries of the UK, as well as America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland; with your support, we can make this a truly international event. The winner together with the top ten selected poems will fi gure in our anthology and therefore become published poets. To give our anthology a higher profi le we have purchased our own ISBN numbers, so that on publication our book must be lodged with the British Library together with the fi ve major libraries throughout the UK and Ireland. Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to ask my colleagues, the secretary whose address appears on the entry form available via our website www.bardicwriterscircle.com

In Caerphilly, the old Miners’ Hospital will close and better facilities will be available just a few miles up the road. Thanks to the eff orts of Jeff Cuthbert AM (and the Caerphilly Miners’ Centre for the Community Committee) the main part of the old hospital will be kept and used for a health related purpose.
One of the concerns of some people relates to the issue of accident and emergency facilities. It has been suggested that the new hospital, unlike the Miners’, will not have an A & E Centre.
This is simply wrong. The new hospital will have a local emergency centre which will have a range of functions, including diagnostics services to allow medical teams to identify conditions quickly. There will also be a minor injuries unit and a short stay assessment unit. The new hospital will also have a G.P out of hour’s service as part of a special integrated unit.
This will be far better than anything currently available in the Miners’ Hospital and crucially, access will be 24/7. At the Miners’ Hospital, the A & E unit is only available 43 hours a week!
If My Local View readers would like to see the excellent facilities which will be available to them in the new local Emergency Centre, or the other superb facilities at the new hospital, just click on to www.wales.nhs.uk/sitesplus/866/.
Every single patient, at the new hospital will have a private room, to
ensure speedy recovery and reduce the chance of infection, there is even a rumour that people will soon be treating the hospital like a 5* hotel. I don’t think this is very likely but it does reinforce the point that Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr will be a truly wonderful hospital.
Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly
Before the end of the year we will see the opening of the new hospital in Ystrad Fawr. This will be one of the fi nest hospitals in the country, providing state-of-the-art medical treatment for the people of the area.
The New Hospital and Accident & Emergency
On Behalf of The Malcolm Uphill Commemorative Committee the committee would like to thank the readers of My Local View Magazine for all the help and support in our campaign to raise funds to erect a commemorative Plaque on the Station Square Caerphilly.

Hi everyone, Wow! What a busy but fantastic summer of events we have had.
Where shall I start? BBC Proms in the Park…. the feedback we are receiving is astonishing!
Even though the Events Team were bitterly disappointed that the event was cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, as I am sure were the visitors; the praise we have received has been fantastic. All will agree that if the weather had been kind to us this would have been a spectacular event in Caerphilly. Those fortunate to see the rehearsals will have been impressed with Caerphilly Youth Big Band and Only Boys Aloud.
We do hope BBC Proms in the Park returns to Caerphilly next year and this time the sun shines down on us. Please note that if you purchased tickets for this event, refunds are being issued at The Visit Caerphilly Centre, original tickets must be produced to receive a refund.
Pedalling onto the next event…The Tour of Britain. Luckily the weather was with us for this event and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. Seeing school children lining the streets with their Welsh fl ags, cheering the cyclists on, was brilliant. The Tour of Britain Stage 4 highlights programme on ITV4 in the evening of the race, showcased the county borough of Caerphilly and the aerial fi lming of Caerphilly Castle and Caerphilly mountain was superb. Within the space of a week Caerphilly Castle was highlighted through two major events, putting Caerphilly and the county borough fi rmly on the map.
I am currently working on our Winter Events Guide, this proved hugely popular last year, as did our Spring/Summer Guide 2011.
There are lots more events in the diary throughout October to Christmas this year, so plenty to keep you occupied. A friend of mine who lives outside our County Borough commented to me that there always seems to be something going on in our borough, whether it is ranger walks in Cwmcarn Forest or children’s activities at Llancaiach Fawr Manor, you can nearly always fi nd something to do without travelling too far.
Plans are well underway for our ever-popular Christmas Markets. I will tell you a little bit about them to whet your appetite. Currently we have
50 craft and food stalls, Santa and his Reindeers booked for Blackwood (3rd & 4th December). 80 craft and food stalls and….. back by popular demand the Medieval Beggars for Caerphilly (10th & 11th December). Bargoed sees the return of a popular ice rink
from Saturday 10th December until Saturday 17th December, which coincides with a Christmas Market. I won’t tell you anymore otherwise Stacy won’t have any surprises to give you in next month’s column!
Hope you’ve all started your Christmas shopping!!!
Oh, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with our activities and keep looking on www.caerphilly.gov.uk/events for other exciting events going on in the county borough.
Speak to you all soon,

Actually, I like the idea of game better than the taste. I used to inhabit a bucolic dream world where everything was wood smoke and Vaughan Williams, and horsey girls looking awkward in their evening gowns at the Hunt Ball. Pheasant and venison were all part of the fantasy; but most game is a swine to cook. Being fat-free may sound virtuous, but in the hands of a tyro (like me) it usually means impossible to chew. In my younger days I used to pot the odd hare, but it’s strong stu and actually only my Dad really liked it.
Then I met a girl from Leeds and stopped wearing corduroy. The gun went back to the shop and it’s, oh, 30 years since I killed anything. The bucolic haze hasn’t entirely ebbed from my daydreaming, though, but nowadays the autumnal whi of cordite has been succeeded by a richer, sweeter, aroma: that of apples. The apple harvest starts in July with the earliest varieties and goes on until November, but October is the big month and yes: I’ve become a cider nut.
Actually, I’ve been a cider nut for quite some time: in the late ‘90s I edited the Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Cider Guide, ran a quarterly called The Cider Press, and briefl y even ran my own cider shop in a farmyard where I made my own cider and sold a range of about 40 farm ciders from plastic barrels. Didn’t do too badly, either, although eventually I had to fi nd a proper job.
By cider, though, I don’t mean the fi zzy factory-made stu that
pretends to be a lot more authentic than it actually is. Made from frozen concentrate, much of it imported; watered down; sterile-fi ltered; pasteurised; artifi cially carbonated – well, millions of people like it, so I must be wrong; but to me cider is a vintage product made from 100% apple juice (or pear juice, in which it’s properly called perry), allowed to ferment slowly over the winter until it stops fi zzing, and served in its natural form without being fi ltered, pasteurised, and carbonated.
It’s a very di erent drink from Magner’s, believe me. One thing people fi nd strange is that it’s still (not fl at) rather than fi zzy; they’re also intrigued by the incredible range of fl avours that come from the di erent blends of cider apples favoured by each maker. I generally work behind the cider bar at the annual CAMRA beer festivals in St Neots and St Ives, and my experience is that novice
drinkers are a bit shocked by their fi rst taste of the real stu , but that nearly all of them come back for more, try a taster of every di erent cider we have (normally seven or eight), and go home wishing they could fi nd farmhouse cider in their own locals and supermarkets.
You can’t, of course. Some of the ciders you fi nd on the high street are better than others, but even reputable independent makers have had to carbonate and tone down their products to take account of the popular taste for fi zz; and genuine farmhouse ciders are too “niche” (horrible word!) for the mainstream retailers. But perhaps it’s a good thing that you can’t: the very elusiveness of real cider, unless you’re lucky enough to live in the west, is a strong part of its mystique.
And being the snob that I am, of course, I’d probably stop drinking it if just anybody could get hold of it.
It’s October, and we’re well into the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Out in the fi elds and woods the 12-bores are banging ceaselessly as luckless pheasants tumble from the sky, while happy country landowners gleefully trouser the improbable quantities of cash people are prepared to pay for a spot of shooting these days. (You aren’t even able to keep what you kill: that goes o to Tesco, where it looks decidedly un-baronial all shrink-wrapped on its plastic tray).

As the country well and truly feels the fi nancial pinch of the recession, there’s
a lot of pressure on us to be careful with our money, to spend it wisely and to adapt to a less indulgent lifestyle. So buying those designer labelled beauty products - complete with very large price tags - can become diffi cult to justify for those of us on a weekly
budget.
Yes, it’s hard to fi ght the allure of the brand and the promises that come with it, not to mention the sublime packaging and determined sales pitch from the assistant.
We all have a tendency to think that if it’s designer and expensive, then it’s guaranteed to make our skin more youthful, our lips look fuller and our lashes appear longer. We reassure ourselves that the expense is, of course, worthwhile but in reality, are there other products that can transform us from plain to gorgeous, for half the cost?
Is a healthy glow, fl awless skin, luscious lashes and perfect pout only available if you buy into expensive top brands or is there an eff ective value for money alternative?
Well, thanks to the new trend in budget beauty, a superb range of aff ordably priced buys are emerging. They might not be quite as exciting and glamorous as designer alternatives, but they do off er surprising results at pleasing prices.
The once uninteresting ‘value’ ranges have been overhauled and replaced with ones that are far more likely to grab our attention and make us realise that these products can stand up well against the competition. After all, what makes a beauty product great is what it can do for you, not the name on the container.
With supermarkets like Tesco leading the way with unbelievably cheap prices on cosmetics, these budget buys provide a great way for us to try out diff erent or fashion-forward make-up looks, that we
usually wouldn’t want to invest a lot of money in.
The cheap price tag makes experimenting fun, and a few pounds lost in an unsuitable lipstick is easy to live with, unlike the hefty credit card bill from the beauty counter of a top brand.
And it isn’t just cosmetics that are available at bargain prices. Everyday essentials are great value too. If you love relaxing with expensive bath and body products then you won’t be disappointed. The Body Shop - although slightly more expensive than some of the really cheap budget buys - is always the best for sumptuous, sweet smelling ranges that are perfect for pampering, cater for all needs and rival any designer fragrance.

More than ever before value-for-money products can even be found in your favourite clothing store. Next have a fabulous range of items that are
fashion inspired and aff ordably priced, so you can fi nish a trendy new look perfectly. Their vast
range of varnishes bring nails up-to-date,
at a price that allows you to try out every colour in the range.
Although it is hard to deny that a lipstick clad with an iconic designer logo looks so much more sophisticated in any handbag than a budget alternative, when on the lips the two look equally eff ective. And of course, with what you save on a designer lipstick, you can invest in expanding your make-up bag, fi nding a new look that really suits you and a satisfaction in knowing that, even with all the new purchases, you are still saving money.

Garden LandscapingNow is the ideal time to make any major garden improvements you wish to make. Autumn and winter are prime planting times for trees, shrubs, hedges and bulbs. It gives the plants time to establish before the growing season commences in spring. Maybe you want to dig a pond, build a deck or patio or just fancy a change of scene. Find ideas from gardening magazines, TV programmes, and your neighbours. Alternatively, you can employ a professional garden landscaping service. They are especially useful if you have major design changes you wish to make or are unable to do the work yourself. Landscaping and garden design services can come up with ideas you hadn’t thought of, advise on the best plants for your garden and source hard landscaping items easily.Set yourself a budget and stick to it. It’s very easy to become carried away. Ensure any plants you choose are suitable for your area and
soil otherwise you could be very disappointed.Don’t forget your front garden either. This is the first thing
visitors and passers-by see and a well-tended and beautifully designed front garden creates a positive
impression.

450g (1lb) granulated sugar
75g (3oz) butter
150ml (¼pt) milk
170g can evaporated milk
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
100g (4oz) glace cherries, chopped
Makes approx550g (1¼lb)
Place the sugar in a large heavy-based pan with the butter, milk and evaporated milk. Heat gently, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved.
Bring the mixture to the boil, without stirring, and continue to boil until the mixture reaches 116C/240F on a sugar thermometer (see tip). Stir the boiling mixture occasionally to prevent it from sticking.
Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla essence and chopped glace cherries. Beat with a wooden spoon until the mixture is sti , grainy and paler in colour.
Quickly pour the mixture into a greased 18cm (7in) square shallow cake tin. Leave until almost set then mark into squares. When completely cold, cut or break into the squares. Store the fudge in an airtight container.
This home-made fudge is a delicious sweet treat that kids will love and is great for a Hallowe’en treat. You can replace the cherries with raisins, chopped stem ginger or chopped nuts.

More Halloween Treats... If you’re planning a Halloween party here’s a few more quick ideas to keep hungry trick or treaters happy...
EYEBALL CUPCAKES - top vanilla sponge cupcakes with a layer of glace icing. Using a tube of red writing icing, pipe lines to resemble veins and place a red cherry in the centre.
SPIDER’S WEB COOKIES - top plain digestive biscuits with a thin layer of black ready-to-roll sugar paste icing. Using a tube of white writing icing, pipe a spider’s web pattern on each topped biscuit. Leave to set.
HUBBLE BUBBLE JELLIES – make up lime and orange fl avoured jellies according to the packet instructions. Leave until just beginning to set and then divide the lime jelly between 6 clear plastic cups. Add a few bug-shaped jelly sweets then top with the orange jelly and a few more sweets. Leave until set.
WITCHES BREW – make some red coloured ice cubes by pouring cranberry juice into ice cubes trays then freezing until solid. Pour lemonade into tall glasses and add the ice cubes. Add a couple of jelly sweet snakes to each glass.

Fudge
TOP TIP - If you don’t have a sugar thermometer, place a jug of very cold water by the hob. After boiling the fudge mixture for about 5 minutes, drop a teaspoonful of the hot syrup into the water. If the syrup forms a ball which you can roll between your fi ngers then its ready – if not, boil for a further few minutes then test again.

Fun events in Caerphilly
The children in Denbigh Court, Hendredenny decided along with my three grandsons and a few others to arrange a fun day/BBQ.
None of the children are very old 13 the eldest (I think). Mums, Dads & Grandparents were “roped” in to help with the food and the BBQ.
The children then decided that donations for face painting, tattoos etc. would all help to raise money for the starving children in East Africa.
Saturday 20th August was the day decided on it was dull and drizzly, but the drizzle lifted.
Children and adults alike had a wonderful time and 2 hours turned into 4 and the beautiful array of fl owers and butterfl ies (on most faces) brightened up the street.
The food was great, £100 was raised and sent off , and
we are all much better acquainted – community spirit alive and kicking in Denbigh Court.

Funding Application SuccessAn application for nearly £500,000 capital funding and £140,000 revenue submitted on our behalf by United Welsh Housing Association (UWHA) has got through the first round, one of only 9 projects across Wales. This is a huge step forward for the project and very promising for the future of the centre. A refined application will be submitted in January 2012. Weneed to be able to demonstrate that we have both the support and the commitment of the community. We will be looking to local organisations and individuals to make known how they will use the centre in the future.
Notice Board The Tourist Information Centre has offered us a notice board in their downstairs office window; we will try to update it every two weeks. We have also learned how to update our website – go to http://caerphillymcc.weebly.com. You can also contact Katherine Hughes on 029 2088 6569 or [email protected] .
Logo Competition Thanks to everyone who entered the competition to design a logo for the forthcoming Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community. There were entries from all ages across the borough and the judges were impressed by the thought that had gone into entrants’ ideas. Local resident, Mark Griffin received the £50 prize for his winning logo from Jeff Cuthbert, AM, Chair at the project’s coffee morning on 17th Sept. Judges were impressed by its simplicity and the way in which it captures a sense of community togetherness and moving forward.
Prize Draw for Members We wish to thank all those ‘friends of the project’ who have renewed their membership this year. A prize draw for those who renew their membership before December 2011 is to be held, with a meal hosted by our Chair, Jeff Cuthbert AM, at the Welsh Government restaurant as first prize. If you are not yet a member and would like to join, please contact our membership secretary, Doreen Ellis – [email protected]. Cost £5 per year.

Over 1500 revellers packed Virgina Park Caerphilly to attend the 17th annual Megaday music event. Megaday is held every year to raise funds for Velindre hospital in memory of two local musicians, Andrew Nichols (Mega) and Paul Graham (PG) who sadly lost their lives to cancer.
This year was also the tenth anniversary of the loss of Paul Grahame, and in tribute to Paul, his band “The Tips” reformed to play a special on off show of Paul’s favourite and most popular songs in his memory. One of the weekend’s highlight’s was the moment Paul’s young nephew Callum (aged 11) took up Paul’s guitar and played the song “Shooting Star” a tune that is known to Megaday regulars as one of Paul’s signature songs.
Paul’s family and friends all agreed that was a wonderful and emotional tribute to a very special musician who had done so much to help Velindre Hospital and the music scene in Caerphilly. The weekend saw over 15 bands and local DJs perform on the Megaday stage in front of a delighted and enthusiastic Megaday crowd.
One of the Megaday organisers, James Edwards said “It’s been a fantastic weekend, the weather’s been good, the crowds came in there masses and the event went like clockwork, we’d like to thank every who helped make it happen”.
Megaday organisers hoped to have raised around £15k for Velindre hospital this year to add to the £200k, already raised in previous years.

In Caerphilly, Park Safe ran to ensure the town’s parks are safe and enjoyable places for local families to visit. Officers from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Community Safety Wardens regularly patrolled the local parks throughout the summer, including Morgan Jones Park and Virginia Park to deal with any incidents they came across. They dealt with incidents such as breaches of Designated Public Protection Orders (no drinking orders), underage drinking and other forms of anti-social behaviour. In total, 51 stops were made, 18 ASBO referrals were submitted, 13 intelligence logs submitted, 1 arrest made and 49 cans and bottles of alcohol disposed of.In Bedwas and Caerphilly there are now 40 fewer off-road bikes being used thanks to the return of Back on Track. Over the summer, officers from the Bedwas and Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team have been tackling the use of off-road bikes in their areas. Off-road operations were carried out to tackle off-roaders, coupled with the launch of Back on Track.Funded by the Caerphilly County Borough Children and Young Peoples Partnership, officers worked with Halfords to provide local people with an opportunity to trade in their off-road bike in return for a mountain bike and accessories. Everyone who surrendered their off-road vehicle received a mountain bike, helmet, cable and lock, bicycle lights, puncture repair kit, riding mitts, high visibility arm and leg bands, as well as a three year bike care plan – all for free.Other work has included: The Friday Night Project in Bedwas and a popular Caerphilly youth club have contributed to reduction in anti-social behaviour.Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team Sergeant, Andy Down explains: “We are committed to improving the quality of life for residents and Bedwas and Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Teams have had a strong focus on prevention and working with members of public who are not prepared to tolerate these types of incidents. The figures illustrate we are making real progress but there is always more that can be done. Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage remains a concern for people living in Gwent and we will continue to work hard to help tackle this.”
Cllr Rob Gough, Cabinet Member for Public Protection said: “This is very pleasing news and definitely a positive step in the right direction. Our team of Community Safety Wardens work tirelessly alongside our partners at Gwent Police and other organisations to help make Caerphilly county borough an even safer and more pleasant place to live.”He continued: “I would also like to emphasise the commitment of the many other teams, community groups and members of the public – without their involvement, the task of reducing levels of anti-social behaviour in our county borough would be all the more difficult.”
“From youth workers and community volunteers who provide diversionary activities for young people to take part in, through to our Trading Standards team who work hard to ensure that alcohol doesn’t get into the hands of our youngsters, all have, and will continue to play a key role in this substantial reduction in anti-social behaviour levels”, he added.
The Safer Caerphilly Community Safety Partnership, of which Gwent Police and Caerphilly County Borough Council are members, also operates a ‘four strikes’ early intervention programme for dealing with anti-social behaviour in Caerphilly county borough. This programme is a mechanism for identifying individuals whose persistent anti-social behaviour causes problems within our communities and for considering appropriate action to seek to modify such behaviour. To report incidents of anti-social behaviour, please call Gwent Police on 101. In an emergency, please dial 999. For more information, please visit www.gwent.police.uk/asb

Neighbourhood Policing Real problems, real solutions! Tackling anti-social behaviour in CaerphillyAnti-social behaviour across Bedwas and Caerphilly is down by 39.3% and 40.1% * respectively, over 1100 incidents fewer than this time last year. After the launch of a joint summer campaign with South Wales Police which reassured those living and working in our Force areas that we have real solutions to real problems, Bedwas and Caerphilly Neighbourhood Teams have worked tirelessly throughout the summer months to tackle the problems head on.

G Quiet disastersRenault Koleos You only have to look over the fence to sister fi rm Nissan to see that crossovers can be successful – try and order a Qashqai or Juke now and you’ll be looking at a rather long wait. So it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why the Renault Koleos fl opped. Renault launched it in 2008 and by 2010 it had been axed, selling just 2,890. The Qashqai, by comparison, sold 9,253 models in March alone.
Nissan CubeThe Cube has been a cult hit for years with uno cial imports snapped up by style conscious buyers keen for something unique. So when Nissan decided to bring the latest model to the UK o cially in 2009, it was sure it had a hit on its hands. Unfortunately, the maker gave it little publicity, it was expensive and soon became too costly to import from Japan. 1,000 were sold which Nissan says was ‘over its estimate’. We don’t believe them.
Citroen C6We all know that large French saloons haven’t been the most popular cars in Britain. Despite this, Citroen launched the C6 in 2006 with phrases like ‘free-thinking’, ‘svelte’, and ‘unmistakable’ in its marketing bumpf. From its launch to the end of 2010, Citroen sold just 889 units – the E60 BMW 5 Series sold ten times as many in the same period. But Citroen always said it had expectations the C6 would fi nd homes ‘in the hundreds, rather than thousands’.
Chrysler SebringChrysler had its eye on entering the D-segment back in 2007 – and thought the Sebring was the answer. It wasn’t. The press packs said it combined ‘striking design with interior craftsmanship’ with ‘great performance’ thrown in for good measure. The public disagreed and bought only 2,652 of them before it slipped o the price lists in 2009. In the same period, Ford sold 126,368 units of the Mondeo.
Subaru TribecaLike Renault, Subaru believed it needed an SUV in its range. So, in 2006, along came the Tribeca. Intended to o er a ‘practical SUV with great handling and a sporty drive’ it failed to fi nd buyers. A face-lift in 2008 did nothing to improve sales and it bowed out that year with just 750 sold. In contrast, the Volvo XC90 – a car Subaru was competing with – sold 11,897 units in the same three years.
Toyota Urban CruiserThe Toyota Urban Cruiser went on sale in May 2009. Designed to meet a ‘growing demand for vehicles that are cut out for life on urban roads’ it didn’t do the job. Sales at the end of 2010 were 3,017 – the maker had planed to shift 2,000 units a year.
CAR makers. Give them their due, they normally produce some rather good motors. But occasionally – very occasionally – disasters that should have remained in the design studio slip through the net.

Chrysler Crossfi reLaunched with great fanfare in 2003, the Crossfi re was Chrysler’s sports car for the masses. Based on the fi rst-generation Mercedes SLK, it came in coupe and convertible forms with retro American styling. However, only 4,544 units were sold in fi ve years, and the Crossfi re quietly died in 2008. In contrast the SLK sold 4,362 units in 2004 alone.
Vauxhall SignumMore than just a cut-down Vectra, the Signum was intended to o er the executive experience in an otherwise humdrum Vauxhall and arrived in 2003. But almost fi ve years to the day, Vauxhall called time on the Signum, axing it with just 17,344 sales to its name. This was ‘on target’ according to the fi rm but industry experts say it was well o what was originally planned.
Ford CougarAlong with the Focus, the Cougar was one of the cars that demonstrated Ford’s ‘new edge’ look in the late 90s. Available with the Mondeo’s 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines, the Cougar was loved by the press. Sadly, the public wasn’t convinced – the lack of a prestige badge meant sales totaled 13,958 in four years. In contrast, the BMW 3 Series Coupe sold 44,420 between ’98 and ’02, showing a badge makes all the di erence.
Mercedes-Benz R-ClassBilled as a car that combined ‘an SUV, sports saloon, and luxury estate car’ into one package, the Mercedes R-Class arrived in 2005 hoping to carve a niche of its own. It was such a niche that few Brits bought it, and even a makeover in 2010 did little to improve the 3,433 sales clocked up so far. Mercedes says those numbers are ‘in-line with expectations’, but we’re not so sure about that…

In my days of running a plant department in a garden centre, I was often asked for what sounded like the ideal plant; it may come as no surprise that the one which I could often recommend was in fact a male. Yes occasionally we can get male or female plants – needless to say the males are often the more colourful ‘show off s’.Rarely do we fi nd a plant which ‘ticks all the boxes’; but permit me to introduce you to a fi ne little fellow by the name of Skimmia Rubella. So, what boxes does he tick?
Size – Rubella normally gets to about a metre high and a metre across within 10 years, making it perfect for smaller gardens, patios, and tubs.
Sun or shade? The answer to that question is … YES!
Skimmias are really happy in shade; so if you have a shaded area, where nothing seems to grow –try these guys. I have also seen them doing very well, thank you very much, in sunny spots too.
Pruning / aftercare - Very little required, I don’t think I have ever had to trim or prune a Skimmia; they seem to
naturally keep their shape compact rounded dome shape. The main requirement is that when you plant your Skimmias, you put plenty of
their favourite compost in the hole or pot (Ask for Ericaceous compost – all the garden centres will have some).
Long Flowering time - Skimmia Rubella, the most popular male Skimmia will be displaying clusters of deep red fl ower buds from now, all through the winter, until next spring when those red buds open up
to clusters of white, highly perfumed, fl owers during March and April.
According to my quick calculation that gives us a good 6 months of colour, which can’t be bad. In case you are wondering the Skimmias are Evergreen, so that even when it is not in fl ower you can enjoy the glossy deep green leaves … perfect!

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly
This is not to suggest that the Assembly was in any way inactive between the election in May and the end of the summer term. But understandably those weeks were taken up to an extent with new AMs finding their feet and being allocated to various Committees.
So just what are the big issues coming up?
The biggest by far will be the debate around the draft budget for the next financial year. For the second year running the Welsh Government has had a reduced settlement from the UK Coalition Government.
This means that all organisations drawing public funds will see tighter controls on expenditure. It’ll mean more efficient spending plans and much greater collaboration to avoid wasteful duplication. This certainly includes local government and the NHS.
No doubt the Labour Welsh Government will face criticism from the Tories and Lib Dems. All a bit rich considering that it’s the Coalition UK Government that is cutting the money available to Wales!
Another big issue will be in education and training. There have been many media reports suggesting that there’s a “crisis” in Welsh schools. This of course is a gross over-reaction and is not really borne out by the facts. A Level and GCSE results have improved although not as much as other parts of the UK. But there is work to do.
The Education Minister and I will be pursuing policies to raise standards not only in schools but in terms of vocational training also. We’ll be taking a careful look at the sort of courses and qualifications that we offer young people in Wales. We want to be sure that young people have the best guidance about potential employment opportunities and the qualifications that will help them the most.
So a lot of work to do. I’m looking forward to playing my part. I’ll keep readers of My Local View as up to date as I can.
Jeff Cuthbert A.M.Bargoed YMCA, Aeron Place, Gilfach, Bargoed CF81 8JA Tel: 01443 838542.
The new Assembly term has begun. Although the Welsh Government has remained active during the summer recess this new term will undoubtedly mark the beginning of scrutiny in depth by the Assembly as a whole.

It is understood that Welsh forces are being stepped up until 5th October 2011, and the aim of this is ‘to make texting or phoning at the wheel socially unacceptable’.
The campaign by the Welsh forces will undoubtedly go to some extent to make our roads that little bit safer and at the same time encourage awareness by other road users to follow the laws in already in place.
If however, you do fi nd yourself in the position with the police that you have been charged with an off ence of his
nature, then please do get in touch with a criminal solicitor promptly.

“It’s so funny how we don’t talk any more”“You just don’t understand me”“We need to talk!”“Are you listening to me?”
It’s a funny old business – this communicating lark – and a lot us struggle with it: marriages, staff team meetings, Fathers and Sons, Mothers and Daughters, all those relationships thrive, or dive, according to how we communicate.
In my humble experience; often when people say that they want to communicate – what they really mean is they want to get their way!
It seems to me that listening is a key to communicating with people; and it is the same when we communicate with God – when we pray. There is a danger that we see GOD as a kind of celestial vending machine, where we pump in our requests and he should deliver all we ever wanted … or not.
Sometimes when I hear myself praying, I cringe, because I use a language that I wouldn’t usually use … I go ‘all religious’
Jesus made it clear that he and his Father were not impressed with lots of fine sounding ‘religious words’ – babbling like pagans is how he described that.
So how on earth do we listen to this unseen GOD? The truth is, I do not find it easy; I am still working it out. I have found that praying with someone else really helps; sometimes as I listen to a friend pray, something registers in me. There is something in that dynamic of ‘opening up’ with someone else that GOD seems to like.In Matthew 18 verse 20, Jesus said “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them”
You can hear GOD speak in many ways through his Bible, his creation, through teachers and through prayer; once I have ‘heard’ something from him, the challenge is to put into practice…that’s where the fun really starts.
Roger Crookes - [email protected]

History of Llanbradach Bowling Club
Records show that for the fi rst 3 years of its existence the Llanbradach Bowling Club was located in the lower fi eld at the northern end of the village, just over half a mile away from its present day site.
The land which is now the current bowling green was kindly donated to the club by Miss Clara Thomas following a request from the founder members. The Llanbradach mining explosion of 1901, in which 8 miners were killed, marked the beginning of a close link between the club and colliery owners. The rescue parties were led by among others, colliery Manager Mr Samuel Gregory and his son Mr John F Gregory. The pit top was controlled by Sergeant Owen Eastment, all of whom were club members.
The landmark day for Llanbradach Bowling Club came on Monday 13 June 1904 at 1 o’clock p.m. when the new green was opened at its present site. This momentous occasion came on a typical bowling day-wet and windy-very little has changed in the game of bowls since that day.
The green was opened by Mrs Gregory the esteemed wife of Mr S Gregory the Manager of the colliery and Chairman of the executive committee of the bowling green. Miss Clara Thomas was unable to attend. After the ceremony a grand luncheon was prepared by Mr and Mrs Fussell, of the Llanbradach Hotel and was well partaken of and enjoyed. Luncheon over, the members and guests played a game of bowls in the rain until it became too wet to play on.
The green consisted of 5 rinks and fees were 2/6 per annum.
Llanbradach Bowls Club was established in 1901. Over the next few issues we thought you would be interested to learn more about its history...
