WelcomeWe’ve been feeling the cold a little lately in the Ocean View offices, which might be what inspired us to find out about the latest freezable, submersible technologiesfor Spending it on page 11. As the famous explorer Ranulph Feinnes once said: “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing,” so if you’re planning an arctic adventure, a skiing trip or just nipping to the shops this winter, you can be well-equipped to have the best time possible.

Winter seas are beautiful, dramatic and treacherous, and few know this better than the RNLI. We share the story of the voluntary heroes who, through their dedication and bravery, save thousands of lives at sea every year. Meet the volunteers who took part in 2012’s riskiest rescues and take note of their tips for sea safety if you’re planning any sailing trips.

Talking of trip planning, this issue has tonnes of inspiration for anybody looking for the holiday experience of a lifetime. Take a tour of St Petersburg on page 15, or explore ideal holidays for a fishing enthusiast on page 47. If none of those tickle your fancy, we investigate the basics of chartering your own vessel for a bespoke cruise on page 6.

Go Your Own WayHaven’t found the cruise holiday that’s just right for you? Read on to nd out how to plan your own… and what the chances are that your dream cruise holiday could be “bumped” by a charter.

Ship charters offer a different and exciting way to cruise. Offering flexibility, privacy and control, charter sailing can be used to create a unique and perfect holiday experience, whatever the size of your party.

From just a few guests to groups of up to 150, charter yachts allow you the freedom to tailor your destinations and itinerary: to go where you want, when you want. Depending on the size of the boat they can also offer incredible luxury, with state of the art bedrooms and onboard facilities from dining suites all the way up to onboard spas and cinemas.

PrivatSea offer the full spectrum of charter yachts from 30 to 122 meters in length, accommodating twelve guests each on average. Specialising in the Mediterranean Basin, PrivatSea’s motor and sailing yachts offer luxury and comfort, complemented by discreet onboard service from a crew especially trained to provide the highest standard of service.

Now available for the most exclusive corporate events and for large private groups, these yachts offer the ultimate venue to commemorate a special occasion; as a platform to project a prestigious corporate

image or simply the best view to watch events at sea.

PrivatSea is also central agent for charter for the 117m MV TURAMA andthe 122m MV ALEXANDER, the two largest yachts available for charter. Their long-range capabilities enable guests to enjoy both cosmopolitan ports-of-call and peaceful hideaways, with accommodation for plenty of guests and luxury amenities onboard.

If you’re thinking of planning a private charter, PrivatSea’s brokers will guide you through the full chartering process from yacht selection, charter contract, itinerary, preferences and travel to assure that your chartering experience will be as pleasurable as it is memorable.

Commandeering a Cruise? When a corporate or private client charters a cruise ship, the entire vessel is organised around their chosen theme or interest, with special events tailored to the people who will be onboard. Amongst the organisations known for chartering full cruise ships is PartyPoker.com, which hosts a gaming tournament at sea yearly.

“A full ship charter is when an entity, usually a corporation or major affinity group, approaches a cruise line and asks to take over a particular ship on a certain sailing date”

But how exactly does chartering a cruise ship work - for those of us either simply curious about the process or actually possessing the wherewithal to plan one? And what are the real chances that your “regular” cruise could be interrupted or cancelled because of a charter?

“When a potential charterer approaches a cruise line to inquire about a sailing that is already on sale to the public, one of the things a cruise line will evaluate is how much business is on the books and how full the ship is,” explains Melissa Paloti of CruiseCritic.com who recently investigated the topic.

“Most cruise lines are not going to turn away a charter if it is far enough in advance or, even if it’s not that far in advance, if most of the space on the sailing is unsold.”

Cruise operators Royal Caribbean were willing to reveal their policy. “If the cruise is open for sale when a request for a charter comes in, we look at the level of bookings we already have,” says Stacy Shaw, Manager of Charter Sales Royal Caribbean International. “We have a threshold that’s fairly low that we won’t consider going over. If the booking level is approaching that threshold, we will contact operations staff to make sure we want to proceed with a charter quote.”

If the already-booked guests are flexible about being “bumped”, it might actually transpire in their favour. “If there are guests that are going to be displaced,” Shaw continues, “the company has always sided with the guests who are booked and we have a fairly aggressive compensation program for those guests who are displaced. We offer a comparable product; compensation in the form of onboard credits; and if guests choose not to take advantage of the offer, then they are fully refunded.”

So the reality of the situation is that cruise lines will only allow a charter if it affects a small percentage of already-booked

passengers. Whilst that may inconvenience the individual who was looking forward to a cruise vacation and may have to re-book and organise different leave from work and commitments, they will be in line for generous compensation. For example, in 2007, a last-minute charter of Legend of the Seas dislodged passengers from a 12-night European cruise. The line offered full refunds or the ability to switch to a similar sailing on that same ship, and compensated those who did rebook with $400 per suite or $200 per cabin in spending money. The line also reimbursed affected passengers up to $200 per person for airline change fees - even if they booked flights independently – so passengers with the ability to be flexible. It’s the cruise line’s right, usually, to change arrangements in this fashion which is one of the many reasons it’s so important to read the fine print of your cruise contract so you know your rights and what to expect.

How to Charter a Ship OK, so you’ve got a family reunion coming up, or have been tasked with finding a unique venue for your next company-wide meeting. Considering a cruise? There are a few things you should know. First and foremost, there are three types of charters:

A full ship charter is when an entity, usually a corporation or major affinity group, approaches a cruise line and asks to take over a particular ship on a certain sailing date. The major advantage here is exclusivity: if you take over an entire ship, that whole ship is then all about your organisation or your event. The cons?

Cruise lines impose a guest minimum which can run in to the thousands; securing a full ship charter is very difficult., and it’s not cancellable - payment is required in advance in cash or an “irrevocable letter of credit” drawn up from a bank. As a point of reference, the lowest cost for an off-off-peak three-night cruise on Freedom of the Seas would be $800,000 to $900,000 (funds are then raised through the selling of the cabins) while groups on other longer sailings or special itineraries could face a bill of up to 6 million!

A partial ship charter comes into play when a group wants only some cabins. They do have to meet a minimum: Some cruise lines will only draw up a charter contract for 50 percent or more, while others will consider a 20 or 40 percent ship charter. For example, there is a special interest group of motorcyclists (“Hogs on the High Seas”) that books a partial ship charter twice a year. Upfront payment isn’t required here - but payment and cancellation terms are more stringent than for the honeymoon couple or family of four booking just one stateroom, and heavy penalties apply for non-booked space.

The third option is not “chartering” in the true sense of the word, but rather blocking off a number of cabins as group space. This is more commonly a technique employed by travel agents, where applicable: they buy cabins “in bulk” and then pass the extra savings on to their customers.

CHARTERING

are travel companies which specialise in coordinating cruise charters and helping you find what’s right for you and your party, and PrivatSea have generously offered to talk any Ocean View readers who are considering booking a private charter yacht through the process. Josephine Kling, president of Landry & Kling offers some tips for planning your event - and deciding which type of ship charter is for you:

Start well in advance. Most corporate programs book one to two years out - Carnival doesn’t generally consider anything within six months of the sail date. On the other hand, Shaw says Royal Caribbean doesn’t like to go too far out, either, because it’s difficult to predict where ships will be: “A year to a year and a half is ideal.” Another benevolent plus: The further out you plan, the less likely it’ll be that your trip will displace already booked passengers.

Know what your special events are. Sometimes a half-ship charter is better than the whole kit and caboodle. Let’s say you book a large group on a small ship. Exclusive as that may be, there actually may not be a place to hold an event everyone can attend since onboard theaters generally don’t hold the entire ship’s capacity. On the contrary, if your group took over half of a much larger ship, you might be able to fit the whole group in the theater.

Dream big on personalisation. One of the nicest things about chartering a ship rather than taking over part of a resort or hotel is the ability to greatly personalize the experience. Some ideas to get you started include using the ship’s daily newsletter for announcing meeting times and dress codes, flying a logo flag onboard or at the departure port, and incorporating company artwork on room keys or even desserts. You can even bring on your own entertainment and, in some cases, alter itineraries.

Seeing Red e Baltic region has, in recent years, become one of the world’s most popular

cruising destinations. Among the many attractions and breathtaking views drawing tourists to the region, the most consistently placed on visitors’ lists of places to visit

is St Petersburg which served as the capital of Imperial Russia from 1712 until 1914 and was formerly known as Leningrad.

“ famous for its cultural heritage, St Petersburg is also architecturally beautiful. Wound throughout with canals and defined by the mighty Neva river, it’s often referred to as the Venice of the North”

Around this incredibly historical port city are dozens of must-see attractions, offering something compelling for every kind of tourist. Fascinating museums, dazzling architecture

and areas of natural beauty combine in a city of sad history remembered in grandeur.

For 300 years, St Petersburg has served as Russia’s cultural capital. It’s been home to almost every famous Russian author, poet, dancer, playwright or musician you could care to think of, as well as the location of the vast country’s top theatres, universities and the largest art museum in the world: the Hermitage, which was founded by Catherine the Great in 1764.

Although famous for its cultural heritage, St Petersburg is also architecturally beautiful. Wound throughout with canals and defined by the mighty Neva river, it’s often referred to as the Venice of the North. The city is dotted with spectacular palaces, including the residencies of the Romanovs at Peterhof, Pushkin and Pavlovsk. These, and in fact the entire historical centre of St Petersburg, is now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

If you’re visiting in late June or early July, you’ll be lucky enough to witness the city’s famous White Nights: the sun barely sets and the city stays up with it, locals and tourists alike enjoying the spectacle and extending the vibrant nightlife into the extra daylight hours.

The true heart of the city’s history centres in the crescent of land bound by the Fontanki and Neva Rivers. Within this small area are the Palace Square – the Dvortsoyaya Ploshchad if you fancy trying out the pronunciation in Russian - the famous Mariinsky theatre (home to the Kirov ballet company), the Admiralty, the Hermitage and, and Nevsky prospekt, St Petersburg’s most elegant avenue. Adjacent, across the river, Vasilyevsky Island attracts tourists toits universities and renowned museums. Also nearby is Petrogradskaya Storona, home to the Peter & Paul Fortress and more famous museums.

Even though St Petersburg remained relatively unchanged whilst Moscow was drastically transformed by the Soviet era, the old city now winds through a modern metropolis with all the 21st century features… except skyscrapers. St Petersburg gas a notable lack of tall buildings, although this is likely to change with new constructions including a new stadium as the city prepares to host the 2018 World Cup. Any such additions are likely to be carefully considered though, as the powers that be have worked hard and invested heavily to restore the historic city to the glory of the tsars and tsarinas of old, with considerable help from the United Nations.

If you’re travelling the Baltic region by cruise and are stopping for a number of nights in Russia, you will need to be aware of the strict regulations and visa requirements for visitors entering their country. Of course, you could opt to sign up for the standard shore excursions offered by your cruise organisers, which usually cover all the logistics for you. Many visitors to busy areas such as St Petersburg also prefer the security of a large group to protect them from pickpocketers, which are a sad inevitability in any city frequented by tourists but are more active in Russia than some other places.

Booking a tour through your cruise operator can also save you the bother and expense of applying for a Russian visa. However, what many tourists do not realise (and so miss out on) is that some local tour providers such as the famous Red October and Denrus will undertake the leg and paperwork for you as a group visa for all passengers taking a tour with them.

By booking private tours with any of the well-established English speaking St. Petersburg agencies, tourists can experience highly personalised tour itineraries, expert local commentary and a truly Russian experience of the city – still without having to sort out visa applications.

French Onion Soup With Melted GruyèreWhenever I go to Paris I make a beeline for a restaurant called Fouquet’s on the Champs-Élysées. They serve the best French onion soup I’ve tasted. They add dry sherry, which makes all the difference, as does the amount of time you cook the onions before adding the stock. Simmering it slowly for at least an hour adds to the wonderful depth of flavour.

Serves 41.5kg white onions4 fresh thyme sprigs50g butter4 tbsp olive oil3 garlic cloves75ml dry sherry250ml white wine3 tbsp plain fl our1.5 litres veal or beef stock2 tsp soft brown sugar4 thick slices white bread250g Gruyère cheese, gratedsea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Finely slice the onions and pick the leaves from the thyme sprigs. Heat a large sauté pan, add the butter, olive oil, onions and thyme and fry gently for 35–40 minutes over a medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown.

Finely chop the garlic cloves. When the onions are nearly cooked, add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes. Add the sherry and white wine and simmer until they have reduced by half.

Add the fl our, stirring constantly to get rid of any lumps, then cook for 1 minute. Add the stock and bring to a simmer, then cook gently for about 1 hour. Add the sugar and season with salt and pepper.

To make the croûtons, preheat the grill to high. Toast the bread in a toaster, then cut off the crusts. Cut the bread to fi t the size of the fl ameproof bowls you plan to serve the soup in – it should be large enough to almost cover the soup with a small gap around the edge. Ladle the soup into the bowls, top with the toast and pile the cheese on top. Place under the grill until bubbling and golden brown. Serve immediately.

Chilli, Merguez Sausage and tomato soupMerguez sausages come from North Africa and the Middle East. They are made with lamb, beef or a mixture of the two, along with fennel seeds and garlic, but it’s the chilli paste or harissa they contain that gives them the delicious kick and colour when they’re cooked.

Serves 4500g merguez sausages2 shallots2 garlic cloves2 fresh red chillies150ml white wine400g cherry tomatoes400g tinned haricot beans, drained and rinsed1.5 litres chicken stock6 tbsp fresh basil leaves2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oilSea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Cut the merguez sausages into 2cm chunks. Heat a large sauté pan or fl ameproof casserole dish over a medium-high heat, add the merguez sausages and fry for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown.Meanwhile, roughly chop the shallots and garlic and fi nely chop the chillies. Reduce the heat, then add the shallots, garlic and chillies and cook gently for 10 minutes, until softened but not coloured.

Add the white wine and simmer until reduced by half, then add the cherry tomatoes and cook for 3-4 minutes, squashing them down with the back of the spoon. Add the beans and stock and bring to a gentle simmer, then cover and cook for 1 hour. Once cooked, roughly chop the basil. Season the soup with salt and pepper. Scatter with the basil and drizzle with olive oil just before serving.

Spiced Red Lentil SoupI’ve worked with many Indian chefs during my career, and I’ve managed to learn a lot about their food, but that’s just a drop in the ocean when you think of what’sout there. This was one of the soups we used to serve as a pre-starter for customers in the restaurant.

Serves 4

200g red lentils1 tsp ground turmeric2 tsp salt2 dried red chillies1 tsp coriander seeds½ tsp cumin seeds½ tsp fenugreek seeds½ tsp black peppercorns4 tbsp vegetable oil1 onion3 garlic cloves4 tbsp vegetable oil4 tomatoes1 tsp mustard seeds1 fresh red chilli6 curry leaves4 tbsp fresh coriander leaves4 tbsp Greek yogurtsea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Place the lentils in a large saucepan with 2 litres water, the turmeric and salt. Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat, break the dried chillies into pieces and add to the pan with the coriander, cumin and fenugreek seeds and black peppercorns. Toast for 20 seconds, stirring constantly. Remove and place in a pestle and mortar or spice grinder, then grind to a powder.

Finely chop the onion and garlic. Return the pan to the heat, then add 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil, the onion and garlic, and cook gently for 10 minutes, until softened. Roughly chop the tomatoes. Add the spice mixture, onions and tomatoes to the lentils and bring to a simmer. Skim off and discard any scum, then cook for 1 hour over a very low heat, stirring from time to time.

Shortly before serving, slice the fresh chilli. Heat another frying pan until very hot and add the remaining vegetable oil. When the oil is smoking, add the mustard seeds, fresh chilli and curry leaves, then quickly remove from the heat. Finely chop the coriander. Remove any last residue of scum from the soup, then transfer it to a blender in batches and process until smooth. Return it to the pan to heat through and add the tempered spices and coriander. Season with salt and pepper. Ladle into serving bowls and fi nish with a spoonful of yogurt. Serve immediately.

RNLI

All in a Day’s WorkMeet the volenteers and everyday heroes saving lives at sea

Just after 1am on 1 August 2012, Paul Harrison and his son Sean faced mortal danger amidst breaking waves and total darkness when their motor vessel, Princess, suffered steering problems and was driven onto rocks by strong winds and a large swell at Crail, 10 miles south east of St Andrews, Fife.

Three-metre waves were breaking over the vessel as it was pounded against the rocks. The fridge and cooker had broken loose and were being thrown around the cabin with the violent motion of the vessel, forcing the two crew, out on deck where they were in danger of being swept into the sea.

Despite the challenging conditions, D class inshore RNLI lifeboat, Norma and Bill Burleigh, came to the rescue, working at its limit in the rough seas. It was so dark that the volunteer crew could not see the waves or the fishing gear that littered the area, but Helmsman Gourlay and his two lifeboat crew members managed to pluck the two-man crew from their stricken vessel minutes before it was washed further onto the shore and out of reach of the lifeboat.

With waves breaking over the heavily-laden lifeboat, Helmsman Gourlay navigated through the rocks and rough water to the relative safety of deeper water. Once there, the two survivors were taken onboard Anstruther’s all-weather lifeboat and returned to shore where they were checked over, given dry clothes and put up overnight by another volunteer crew member.

Paul Harrison, of Liverpool, said: ‘We could have lost our lives if it wasn’t for the RNLI. If they had not turned up, then we would have swum for it but, once we got into the water, we would have had no chance. ABOVE: RNLI Flood Rescue Team P

“The RNLI relies on voluntary donations from the public for over 98% of its income.”

Anstruther inshore lifeboat Helmsman Barry Gourlay has been awarded the RNLI Bronze Medal for Gallantry – one of the charity’s highest accolades – for his courage and boat handling skills in these extremely difficult conditions. His fellow volunteer crew members Rebecca Jewell and Euan Hoggan were presented with the Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum for their part in the rescue.

Michael Vlasto, RNLI Operations Director, said: ‘The team undoubtedly saved the lives of these two men – they would not have made it to shore alive if they had attempted to swim and, not long after the rescue, the Princess was driven further onto the rocks. They demonstrated tremendous bravery in what were extremely difficult conditions.’

Without the actions of these brave volunteers, two lives would have been lost at sea on that August night. And without a steady stream of volunteers and donations, the RNLI would not be able to save thousands of lives every year.

The charity that saves lives at seaThe Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the charity that saves lives at sea. It operates a search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and Ireland and has three main facets to its service – lifeboats, lifeguards and a flood rescue team. The charity also saves lives by providing safety advice and is now expanding its international development work, to start tackling the global drowning epidemic.

The RNLI relies on voluntary donations from the public for over 98% of its income.

There are 236 RNLI lifeboat stations around the UK and Ireland. Their operation relies on 4,600 dedicated lifeboat crew members – a staggering 95% of whom are volunteers.

RNLI lifeboat crew members are on-call 24/7, 365 days a year. Most have a full-time day job, but they carry a pager and, when it goes off, they rush to the lifeboat station and launch the lifeboat to rescue those in danger.

Last year, RNLI lifeboats launched 8,905 times, rescuing 7,976 people.

Lifeboat crew trainingAs only 1 in 10 RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew members has a professional maritime occupation, the RNLI provides rigorous training – most of which takes place at the charity’s specialist training facility, the RNLI College.

The crews receive ongoing, specialist training, which ensures they can operate safely and effectively in the most difficult and dangerous conditions. In the RNLI College’s sea survival pool darkness, thunder, lightning, and helicopter recovery can all be simulated. In this facility, crews can learn vital survival techniques and go through capsize drills, so they know what to do should the worst happen while they are at sea on a rescue.

International developmentDrowning kills more people each year than malaria, claiming an estimated 1.2 million lives around the world annually. Despite the scale of the problem, it is barely recognised. The RNLI is expanding its international work to try and reduce this staggering loss of life.

A large proportion of global drownings occur at the coast, in large bodies of water, or in floods – areas in which the RNLI has expertise in saving lives and can offer help. Rather than setting up their own services overseas, they are giving others the means to help themselves by providing assistance. The help might take the form of bespoke training, supply of equipment, safety education, or guidance on search and rescue and flood resilience.

Small interventions can make a huge difference. Two RNLI lifeguard trainers recently spent a week in Bangladesh teaching lifesaving skills, which now means Bangladesh has its first lifesaving club, with trained volunteers who have already begun saving lives.

Latest class of all-weather lifeboatThe charity has recently revealed its latest class of all-weather lifeboat, the Shannon class. It is the next generation of RNLI lifeboat, a replacement for the Mersey class that is nearing the end of its 25-year lifespan. Replacing the Mersey class is the final step in the RNLI fulfilling its operational commitment of providing lifeboats capable of 25 knots.

The Shannon can reach casualties faster than its predecessor – it has a top speed of 25 knots compared to the Mersey’s 17 knot maximum speed, which is crucial when lives are at risk.

Like the Mersey, the Shannon is designed to be launched and recovered from a beach, but can lie afloat if necessary. As with all other all-weather lifeboats she will be self-righting in the event of a capsize and will cope with the roughest of conditions around our coasts. The Shannon also incorporates the latest computer technology and will be the first modern generation RNLI all-weather lifeboat to run on water jets instead of propellers.

Marine safetyTop tips for keeping yourself safe at sea:

• Wear a lifejacket• Get the appropriate training• Carry a means of calling for help• Check engine and fuel• Tell others where you are going• Check weather and tides

CostsThe RNLI provides the best possible lifeboats, equipment and training to ensure that the volunteer lifeboat crews can do their job safely. To replace an all-weather lifeboat it costs the charity £2.7 million; to replace a B-class inshore lifeboat it costs £204,000; and to replace a D-class inshore lifeboat it costs £39,000.

It costs around £1,255 each year to train each of our 4,600 lifeboat crew and £1,000 to train and equip, to RNLI standards, one lifeguard each season.

The RNLI also has to maintain or rebuild outdated stations, which house the lifeboats and provide facilities for crews. This all costs money and is why every donation and legacy – whether large or small – is of great value to the RNLI and its volunteer crews and lifeguards.

The RNLI is a charity dependent on voluntary donations for its income.

For free marine safety advice, call the RNLI on 0800 328 0600 or visit www.rnli.org/seasafety. To find out more about its lifesaving work, or to make a donation, visit www.rnli.org.

Malta: a cool climate that’s hot on the quality-of-life index.

It’s official - Malta has the best climate on earth.

Malta was one of two countries that were tied for first place with the title of Best Climate, according to the Quality of Life Index issued by the International Living magazine last year. Sharing top honours was Zimbabwe.

Yet a Mediterranean climate (over 5 hours of sunshine a day) isn’t all that Malta has to offer. Malta’s many other virtues in the 9 categories of the IL index combined to earn it 3rd place overall in the Index, pipped to the post by the U.S. and New Zealand. That ranking speaks volumes for the size of Malta’s quality offering relative to the island’s land mass of just 122 square miles.

How about a stable government, economy and a modern health service? These factors carry a lot of pull for wealthy English and Europeans looking to get away from their frosty climes. In fact, frost and snow are unknown in Malta with shirt sleeve order and temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees C) in November. Flights to many European capitals are just 3 hours away. Crime is low, education levels high, the locals hospitable and English-speaking with 48 English language schools. As a result, homes and apartments here have now attracted the international set. So has the historic harbours, 5-star hotels, restaurants and summer nightlife.

But overseas domestic buyers aren’t the only ones to recognise the reputation of the island’s property potential. Malta’s success in attracting City hedge fund managers to redomicile to the island as a result of a well regulated and cost-competitive jurisdiction has spurred more demand for high quality homes in the sun.

Back in 2000, it wasn’t like this. Sure, the island had a loyal following of repeat overseas visitors but nothing that one could call gold standard. Despite its geographic location and abundance of sun and sea, Malta’s lifestyle as an up-market destination had little relevance for the aspiring overseas home buyer. That was until Portomaso was built. George Fenech, the Tumas Group’s

Chairman, pioneered the lifestyle concept in Malta. He had a €140 million dream. He wanted to enhance the quality of life for those buyers who could make the right investment decision. His vision of the Portomaso marina would bring Malta to the attention of the international property market with an Oscar of the property world - Gold Award in the Best Marina Development Category in the 2005 International Property Awards. As a result, Portomaso was acclaimed the most exclusive address in Malta and became home to the well-heeled, international celebrities and footballers. Those that bought in 2000 have seen the value of their property rise by over 300%. Rental returns, too, have risen by 06% to 10%.

True recognition by the international property market. A whole clutch of awards for Best Marina Development was won by

Portomaso in 1999, 2000, 2001 and Gold in 2005.

ADVERTORIAL

Out of the Portomaso mould have been cast two more luxury developments in the north and south of the island, both a stone’s throw from the Med. They are already reaching completion, thanks to Tumas Developments, the Group’s property arm. As both properties websites rather prosaically state, these two new residencies ‘offer lifestyle choices of the highest standards’. More to the point, poured into these two moulds are all the expectations of luxury, safety, tranquility and, you’ve guessed it, lifestyle. Tas Sellum and Ta’ Monita have been designed to suit most pockets. Tas-Sellum offers a one-bedroom apartment of 68 square meters starting at €158,000 going up to a million plus for larger apartments whilst Ta’ Monita offers apartments starting at €98,000 going up to a million plus. Both residences are termed Specially Designated Area*, allowing the buyer to purchase more than one property in Malta and Gozo for private use or for business. Perhaps we should create a Portomaso Quality Index. Zimbabwe wouldn’t stand a chance.

• An SDA designated site*• No tax on capital gains arising out of or into Malta• Relief through 58 double taxation treaties ratified• No duty on importing household goods or furniture • Free repatriation of funds• No inheritance tax but duty of 5 % is payable on the transfer or transmission of immovable property• Reduced registration on importing a motor vehicle, subject to certain conditions• You can take a mortgage to purchase a property as a non-resident of Malta• You can rent it out to third parties if bought in an SDA.

e bene ts of buying property in Malta.

The value of Portomaso property has risen by 400%. Might this refl ect property expectations by overseas

buyers for Tas Sellum and Ta’ Monita residences, too?

City fund managers and international footballers also recognise the value of good property standards in Malta.

With such a wide spread of cultures and climates, the United States really does offer something for everyone. Choosing an Ocean View narrows down the choices a little, so we asked Ray Withers,

Chief Executive of Property Frontiers, an award-winning property investment company, about property investment in two of the most popular destinations in the USA.

“Florida and California are both popular choices for holiday and investment properties because of their tourist attractions and sunny climate. Comparatively low house prices mean property investments are far more affordable in both locations than they have been in previous years, but where you invest might depend just as much on how much you have to spend as what view you’d like to look at!

“Both Florida and California were hit hard by the global financial downturn, but prices were affected more in Florida in general, so there are some real property bargains to be snapped up. Florida remains very popular with those travelling from abroad – particularly from places like the UK - because of the year-round

warm, sunny weather and famous tourist attractions. However, Florida also has a lot of second home buyers from across south and central America as well: Miami is in some ways considered the capital of Latin America.

“Florida also attracts residents from around the US because of its low state taxes. California on the other hand is an expensive place to live by US standards and taxes there are very high. In the US, many different taxes are different depending which state you’re in, and these include Property tax, to State Income and sales taxes. Florida has no state income tax at all, whereas California has one of the highest rates in the USA. Whilst rates will vary for different people and properties, in general you can expect to pay more in tax in California than you would in Florida.

On top of lower taxes, property prices generally in Florida have always been cheaper than in the prime locations of California. Today an apartment in Florida may cost as little as $50,000 in a nice vacation zone, whilst regular houses could be only $30,000 although they could not be used as holiday rentals.

“If you are looking for a vacation home in California, the best value is probably to be found in Palm Springs at the moment, where a house may cost $250,000 upwards”

California is a much bigger place and across the state, there are greater disparities in pricing than throughout Florida. Prime locations on the coast or in the mountains are still relatively expensive… you would be looking at a several-hundred-thousand-dollar starting point. Some properties in blue collar areas of cities in the southern parts of LA or Riverside are cheaper, but still not as cheap as Florida.

If you are looking for a vacation home in California, the best value is probably to be found in Palm Springs at the moment, where a house may cost $250,000 upwards. Property prices in famous destinations such as Laguna beach, Long Beach, Malibu, Marina Del Ray, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, San Diego and North California around the Bay area have all fallen by about thirty percent in recent years, but are still relatively pricey. That said, if these are the places you have your heart set on, it might be a good time to BELOW: Waterfront home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

have a look! The mountain destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear have also dropped in price, but still not as dramatically as Florida.

The sheer variety of landscapes and activities in California mean that it remains a very attractive place to own a home for those that can afford it. As such, prices remain higher than Florida. Florida remains the place to catch a tropical bargain.

As an investment, both locations have their advantages. Population growth is increasing in both areas, and I expect that we will see a steady rise in property prices in both Florida and California. There is lots of room for growth before either reach their pre-crash levels, so if you’ve put money aside for a USA property investment but not inspected these markets for a few years, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you can now afford.

Located on the east coast of Providenciales, this 697-square-metre (7500 square feet) Barbadian-style

beachfront vacation villa sits on a beachfront lot of just less than a hectare (2.5 acres). Interior and exterior spaces flow seamlessly into one another to create a magical indoor–outdoor beach living experience.

The architect’s aim was to create a home where a couple, family or group could be equally comfortable. The design includes large, open spaces for large groups to congregate, but equal attention was also given to smaller, more private areas for individuals or couples to enjoy solitude throughout the day. This was achieved by creating four separate pods of living areas, securely linked through open-air travertine galleries. These elegant covered halls feature traditional floor-to-ceiling aqua-coloured wrought-iron gates and Tuscan columns entwined with night-blooming jasmine and stephanotis from the bordering gardens.

Three of the four pods contain four bedrooms and the other central pod houses the kitchen, great room and library on the upper level and an additional bedroom, games room, laundry and cistern on the lower level. The main master bedroom pod sits atop the two-car garage and pool pump room. Each of the upper bedrooms overlooks the infinity-edge pool to the crystal clear azure waters of the Caicos Bank.

FISHING

A Reel Adventure Hop on board for a shing trip unlike anything you have experience before.

Adventure holidays increase in diversity and popularity every year. There’s a huge range of activities and experiences indigenous to destinations the world over, each one offering excitement to those who don’t fancy sightseeing or sunbathing. The question is whether to choose the location for its activities, or decide what to do before choosing where to do it?

Fishing hobbyists the world over have been thrilled by the news as a number of popular and exotic fishing locations begin to offer holiday experiences, opening exciting new seas and of course new fish up to them.

Norway in particular has become a very popular holiday destination for those looking to include a fishing trip in their break, and it’s no surprise: with such an abundance of freshwater lakes, salt water fjords and a magnificent coastline, anyone with a passion for fishing is bound to find something to suit their taste.

With accommodation to suit all budgets and friendly local guides, everyone can enjoy a fishing holiday in Norway from novice to expert. Norway Direct book a

number of different fishing experiences, with luxury accommodation and state-of-the-art vessels equipped with everything a seasoned or occasional fisherman needs.

“Fishing deep waters, from 200 up to 400 meters deep, is something all sportsfishermen dream about,” explain the organisers. “Normally at these sorts of depths we catch ling, torsk, halibut and codfish. The area is a dream come true for sportsfishermen and many a sportfishing record is set in this area.”

“Normally we drop the anchor and fish with bait, waiting for the big catch. Sometimes drifting is also possible, but that depends on the weather.”

Fishing for individual species is suggested for the less experienced, as it is often more lively and tends to be lighter weight, so it is ideal for those who do not fish regularly. Normal catches for this type of fishing, which is usually closer to the shore, are herring, haddock, coalfish, mackrel and pollack… still plenty to offer a challenge!

Once the ice has set, Norwegian fishing

enthusiasts hit the ice. “If you are patient and dressed warmly, a day of ice fishing can be an experience in a class of its own,” say Norway Direct. “Feeling close to nature, a sense of tranquillity and the excitement of not knowing what you will catch are the charms of ice fishing.”

With several partners also providing tours, Norway Direct are able to bring larger groups out fishing, and to cater to corporate groups and larger parties.

Other regions popular for fishing expeditions have different conditions and species of fish to offer.

The Maldives, known for its picturesque beauty and paradise retreats, is also home to a rich and historical fishing culture: fishing

has always been, as it is today, a major source of food and income for local people.

Tourism, of course, is also an important industry and fishing expeditions are an extra attraction that local organisations can offer. The Kuramathi Island Resort offers the thrilling experience of big game fishing from their Dhoni; the Rainbow Runner – a 30-foot long fiberglass boat with comfortable seating and a large sundeck over the roof.

“We adhere to a strict ‘catch and release’ policy, as we are proud members of the International Game Fishing Association,” say Kuramathi. “We encourage all our guests not to take more than one sailfish, marlin or swordfish on their trip. This does

allow them to keep one on board, and of course to take photographs of any additional ones of these species that they are lucky enough to catch before we release them safely back into the ocean.”

Other fish that could be landed include wahoos, barracudas, groupers and more, although beware: some of the bigger fish require some real muscle-power to reel in! This itruly local experience is a really rewarding way to sample the local culture and try something new, or for an experienced sportsfisherman to land the catch they have always dreamed of.

Not all of the best fish are out at sea, of course. Far and Away Adventures offer fishing trips on the Middle Fork of Idaho’s Salmon River. Their “fishing safaris” cater

not just for anglers, but to their non-fishing companions, with guided hikes and nature tours available.

“While the Middle Fork is absolutely a blue ribbon dry fly fishery, there’s much more adventure here than meets the eye,” say founders Steve and Annie Lentz.

Far and Away’s boats have fishing frames dedicated to fore and aft positions with swivel seats and brace to accommodate anglers, making them ideal for beginners as well as those who already have a good idea of what they’re doing.

“Because the Middle Fork had a string of Westslope Cutthroat Trout indigenous to this region, the fish are protected to preserve their heritage. The populations have a healthy existence and an experienced angler

“We are very sensitive to the handling of the wild trout and will be more than happy to release all trout brought to the boat in a manner that does not touch the fish, leaving them unharmed. The fish populations on the Middle Fork Salmon were in decline prior to the institution of catch and release in 1974. The river has made a phenomenal come back,” says Lentz.

Last but not least for our fishing tour (although of course, there are many worldwide that we haven’t mentioned), you could go “trolling” in the paradise of Bali.

Not too far from the equator in theIndian Ocean, exotic tropical game lurk, waiting to challenge those with a passion for fishing.

For those not familiar with this method, trolling is a style of fishing in which one or more baited fishing lines are drawn through the water. This can be done from a boat or from a stationary position by slowly winding the line in or even sweeping it from side to side.

Bali’s prime fishing spots just outside of the island, and local fish you might hope to catch would be species like the Spanish wahoo, tuna, kingfish, sailfish and barracuda.
