Staying positive can be hard in today's world, buthere's one small way to work a little positivity in yourdaily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nicethought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positivethought into your conversation. It's a small way ofmaking the world just a little nicer, and it just takes aminute to plan and a short time to deliver.

Enhancing your career can depend on how ready youare to take advantage of opportunity when it presentsitself. That means that you need to be ready tointroduce yourself quickly to people you might run intocasually in the office or in other business settings.Mike Myatt, in the article “How's your elevator pitch?”

on the Ezine Articles Web site, says that he hasseveral versions of his own introduction prepareddepending on audience, environment and need.

Myatt says that a good introduction imbues youwith credibility and confidence and allows you to tellothers what you do and how you are workingtoward eliminating fears the company has, eradicating painful situations the company faces, ormeeting needs the company has pinpointed foritself. And Myatt says you should be able to do thisin 50 words or less.

So, for instance, when you run into a manager, you could introduce yourself by saying: “My nameis Jim Johnson. I'm a marketing representative. Ispecialize in making sure new clients arecomfortable in their knowledge about our servicesbefore they commit their money to us. And thisyear, I'm working toward the goal of 100 percentclient satisfaction.”

Once you have an introduction that you like, work to perfect it. Practice it – and then use itwhen the opportunity arises.

Preparing for small moments canopen doors to a bigger future.

It's nerve-wracking enough to getthrough an interview, but one canagree that waiting for the result proveseven more aggravating. Even if youcome out of a potential employer'soffice feeling confident that younailed it, there's still a period ofuncertainty that stretches with eachpassing the day the phone does notring. You know HR is interviewingother people and needs to collect afair amount of candidates before theycan make an informed decision. Also, you continue to look for other openpositions. How do you deal with thedays when nobody is calling you?

Anxiety during a job search isperfectly normal. You feel pressured tofind a good job in order to relievefinancial burdens, and the sooner youare hired somewhere the better. Thistime between the interview and thecall should be invested well inimproving your profile, so thatsubsequent interviews - if necessary -may result in a faster response. Notonly that, but staying busy can helpease the nerves as you wait foremployers to contact you.

Here are a few things you can do inbetween interviews to help improveyour position in the eyes of those whohire:

1) Revise your resume. Take a look atyour job history and skills. You maywant to play up certain points andachievements that will impress anemployer. If you have learnedanything new, like a computerlanguage of coding skill, include in anew version before sending it out withyour applications.

2) Change up your references. It'sgreat to have two or three people onwhom you can always rely for a goodword. Don't stop there, however. Tryto get a few people "on reserve" whomay offer a more unique picture ofyou as a worker.

3) Watch the reel. After footballgames, coaches often watch film of

the team to see what worked andwhat didn't. You won't be able torecord your interview, but if you'reworried about your appearance andperformance you can sit with a friendand recap. A new pair of eyes maypoint out tics and gestures that couldturn off employers.

4) Rethink your wardrobe. You dressyour best when you meet potentialemployers, but you should alsoconsider that colors and style varydepending on the job. Rule of thumbamong employment experts is to weara dark neutral color - black or navyblue - in a conservative style.

Changes to your presentation, attitude, and style can make adifference after the interview. Evaluatehow an employer sees you, andimprove upon that image to get thephones ringing.

The new job arena is one of instabilityand uncertainty. Are you drifting alongin your job at the mercy of theeconomic waves? Staying on top ofyour career and your résumé has neverbeen so important. The way to manageyour career in an unpredictableenvironment is by being proactive.Even if you are one of the rare breedthat have a written plan for your careerpath, you need to be open toalternatives for the bumps along theway.

John Kromboltz came up with atheoretic approach to career

development called "PlannedHappenstance". It involves using whatyou learn along your life path in variousexperiences to direct your career future.Planned happenstance is not to beconfused with lack of planning. Manypeople are working in jobs they neverexpected to have because various lifecircumstances and lack of planninglanded them there. For example, I don'thear children say, "I want to be agrocery store manager when I growup," but there are plenty of grocerystore managers out there. They mayhave started as cashiers and perhapslacking direction or completion of a

higher education, simply worked theirway up over a number of years.Planned happenstance is having ageneral or specific direction, guided bylearning from activities over time. However, it seems traditional careerplanning combined with plannedhappenstance may be the bestproactive choice of action.

1. The first step in planning is toupdate your resumé. That way, if anopportunity arises, you are prepared. Also, you really need to complete aprofile on LinkedIn, the most used newtool by recruiters. The website is user-

friendly and gives tips on improvingyour profile.

2. Next, develop what you wouldlike your career path to look like, including positions you would liketo hold, education you plan toobtain, and new skills you plan todevelop. Use a blank sheet of paperand put it on a timeline with expecteddates for each step and how you planto accomplish the progression. ONEThas a wealth of tool that can help youdo this.

3. Then, you incorporate "Planned

Value in Your Brand

One of the core elements in developing your brandis in the value you offer. Too many job seekers andresume writers focus on things like years ofexperience, education or certifications, and softskills. The problem is that there is little that's uniqueabout any of these things. For example, manycandidates have 10-plus years of experience, aBachelor's degree, and are dedicated andhard-working. No, those things are nice, but notalways valuable to an employer.

Defining Value

So how do you determine your value? Start bythinking about the things you have done that othersweren't able to do. Consider the followingexamples:

• As a developer, you may have been able tosolve a software defect that had been plaguing anenterprise application for years.

• As a project manager, you were brought in totake over failing projects and consistently got theteam in order to meet the scope, milestones, anddeliverables of the project.

• As a CIO, you were able to put together a newIT organizational model that helped to dramaticallyimprove service delivery with a reduced coststructure.

The Value Proposition

All these things create value. In addition, they canall be used as a foundation for creating a strongvalue proposition. The developer can highlight theirability to solve intractable problems impactingglobal operations. The project manager can brandthemselves as a project turnaround specialist. TheCIO can position themselves as a changemanagement and business transformation leader.

Many candidates worry about being pigeon-holed

in the job search when they brand themselves, specifically in this manner. The concern is that itlimits their opportunities. Actually, what it reallydoes is create a focused image of who they areand what they truly offer. It makes them somethingother than a commodity, which is important.Remember, commodity prices are set by the marketdemand and all are priced at the same levelbecause all the products are the same. Thisapproach tells the company that you're not thesame at all. You're unique. You're valuable. Youcan command a higher compensation becauseyou're worth it.

Personal Brandand the Resume

Determining YourValue PropositionBy Stephen Van Vreede

Resume DifferentiationIn today's competitive job market, it's essential to distinguish yourselffrom all the other candidates out there, whether they are strong orweak, you've got to stand out from the pack. One of the most effectivestrategies for differentiating yourself is in crafting a personal brandmessage.

Personal Brand MessageYour personal brand simply communicates what makes you special toa prospective employer. The brand statement needs to be clear andconcise. Your audience should be able to read it in 5 seconds or less. This will help them to understand it and retain it.

Writing a Winning

Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve

held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include

information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by

attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe

you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance

options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can

provide proof if asked.

Happenstance" into your careerpath. Broadening your horizons is agood way to begin. This is achievedthrough engaging in interesting, exploratory, and beneficial career andpersonal growth activities such asongoing learning opportunities, participation in industry associations, volunteer work, or other activities. Thinkabout what your passions are andspecial skills in which you excel. Writepossible activities on a separate sheetof paper. Then, make branches off yourtimeline with possible areas from whichyou may consider deviating and whatalternatives you might consider.Deviations could be alternativepositions, careers, and/or industries. Also, consider self-employment orstarting your own business.

4. Another critical piece ofplanned happenstance is keepingin contact with your network offamily, friends, acquaintances, andcolleagues. You never know when acontact may learn about an opportunitywhich piques your interest. Researchshows that 60-80% of jobs are neveradvertised and are filled throughnetworking. Interestingly, most jobsobtained through networking arethrough "weak connections". Weakconnections are people to whom youdo not have close or strong ties. Forexample, weak connections could be

long lost classmates, casualacquaintances, former co-workers, ordistant relatives. Be a network resourcefor those people as well, and they aremore likely to think of you whenhearing about an opportunity.

As our careers progress through theyears, life happens as well, throwingroadblocks, detours, and potholes inour paths. It's how we plan for andhandle unplanned issues thatdetermines how well we developmeaningful careers in the midst of it all.Planning for experiences that will keepyou going in the direction you desireand incorporating what you learn intoyour career plan is the basis of plannedhappenstance. Plan, experience, adapt, and excel.
