Networking your wayto opportunity By Deana Barcz

We have been hearing aboutpeople who have been laid off fromtheir jobs or choosing to changetheir careers. Who do you turn towhen everyone you have knownwas at your previous job? Or whatif you raised your children as a stay-at-home parent and now you arelooking for a volunteer opportunityor are re-entering the workforce?

Building Your Network

When you are seeking an idealsituation for yourself, networkingcould be your answer. One of thebest ways I know to find a "perfectfit" is through networking andgrowing your circle of friends.Networking is not just for salespeople anymore. It is an extremelyvaluable "tool" to know how to doand to put effort into.

Networking is defined as "aninterconnected system of things orpeople; an extended group ofpeople with similar interests orconcerns who interact and remain ininformal contact for mutualassistance or support". When youbecome clear about what you wantand you have a network of friends /associates to spread word through,it becomes easier to then get exactlywhat you want. By going outside ofyour usual routine, you will meetgroups of new people and this is avaluable asset in life that you willalways appreciate.

Here are some tips to building yourown successful network:

1. Focus

Figure out where you want to focus

your efforts. Do you want to work fora large corporation or a smallbusiness? Would you like tovolunteer for an organization thatfocuses on education or nutrition?

2. Reach Out

Make a list of the people you knowright now. Send them an email orgive them a call asking forsuggestions. Perhaps they havecontacts who may be helpful to you.Maybe they belong to anorganization, such as the Chamber, and can bring you as a guest. Orthey may have ideas on where tospend your time and who to meet. Many opportunities come from thepeople who are already in your"circle". From there, you can growyour network. Within a short periodof time, you can develop a largenumber of "leads" in your areas ofinterest.

3. Follow up

Send a personal, handwritten thankyou note to the new people youmeet. It is so important to recognizethe people who have helped you ormay help you in the future. Not onlywill you stand out (regrettably, people forget to let others knowhow grateful they are and do notrealize how this simple, "takes a fewminutes" kind of effort means to theother person) and this will help thatperson remember you, keeping youin mind for new opportunities.

4. Stay Connected

Once you find your ideal career /volunteer opportunity (and you will),

Financial tips fornew graduates

(ARA) – If you are a new graduate, acollege degree is just the first step inthe new direction your life will betaking. A new career, potentially anew community to live in and a bit ofcash in your pocket to spend - thereare a lot of changes happening.

College graduates carry an averageof $25,250 in student loan debt, according to The Project on StudentDebt, by The Institute for CollegeAccess and Success. Compiled withthis debt are the potential expenses ofjob searching, moving, a professionalwardrobe and a new car or bus pass. But receiving that first paycheck - andsubsequent paychecks - can lead tobad financial management if notproperly handled, says John Vaccaro, senior vice president fromMassachusetts Mutual Life InsuranceCompany (MassMutual).

"New graduates should curb theirurge to spend freely and think abouttheir future goals to avoid financialsetbacks like credit card debt andspending beyond their means,"Vaccaro says.

To help prevent new graduates fromsinking deeper into the debt hole, andto look ahead to saving for retirement,Vaccaro has some financial planningtips to help grads get the most out oftheir new paychecks.

• Develop a budgetAlmost half of Americans reportthey're living paycheck to paycheck, according to a 2011 CareerBuilderSurvey. New graduates should createa budget, including all expenses fromrent/house payments, to haircut costsand weekly groceries. Also includespace for savings—if possible.Categorize each expense into anecessity category and adiscretionary spending category, which will help highlight areas whereexpenses could be cut - if needed. Forexample, are payments for cable or

satellite TV necessary, or could yousurvive with free local TV and a lessexpensive subscription for wireless ormail delivery movie rentals? Settingup a budget can help a newgraduate determine if more moneyfrom a paycheck can be put intosavings.

• Look into work benefitsThe first job is a learning experiencefor many in figuring out benefits andmaking them work. Recent graduatesshould take advantage of anyemployer offered retirement plans like401(k)s as soon as they qualify. Foryounger new grads, the combinationof time and potential for a retirementaccount to grow are powerful inplanning for retirement down theroad. Health, life and disabilityincome insurance are also goodbenefit options to research. If yourcompany doesn't offer these kinds ofbenefits, consider obtaining coverageindependently.

• Pay off the right debts firstDebt can occur in a lot of differentforms for new graduates. Carpayments, student loans, mortgagesand credit card accumulations are afew of the more common forms ofdebt. It's a good idea to pay off thosedebts that have the highest interestrates and are not tax deductible first.Ideally, a person should have enoughsavings on hand to pay off a shortterm debt, like credit card purchases,on a monthly basis.

• Rein in spending habitsLook yourself in the mirror and identifyyour spending habits. If you like toimpulse buy, try forcing yourself todelay impulse purchases by 24 hours. Also determine if your spending habitsare influenced in any way byemotional factors or peer pressure.Once these habits are identified, it'seasier to establish ways to circumventbad financial decisions.

keep your new network alive bychecking in. Send an email, give aquick call, meet up for coffee. Andremember to keep your network inmind in connecting them to theirideal opportunities and resources. Itis amazing to think of what canhappen to an entire communitywhen we connect our friends to like-minded people they did not knowbefore or to those who can help oneanother.

Why yourSOCIAL MEDIAHABITSare just as importantas what's on your resume

(ARA) – You may have spent hours making sure you are using

just the right action verbs in your resume, and crafted the

perfect cover letter to catch the attention of your future

employer, but if you haven't spent the time to clean up what's

on your Facebook page, all that work could be for naught.

Not only do social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and

LinkedIn allow you to connect and network as you search for

a job, but they give you a platform to sell yourself – or shame

yourself – to future employers.

"Today, making sure you arebuttoned up on your social mediasites is as important as drafting aperfect resume and cover letter,"says Phil Schmitt, a faculty memberat Westwood College–Du Pagewho teaches a class on preparingstudents for their job searches. "It isnot uncommon for a prospectiveemployer to go to your Facebookpage during the review process. Ihave even heard of employersasking interviewees to pull up theirFacebook pages while in aninterview."

Your social media sites can beused for good and evil when itcomes to job-seeking. On thegood side, you can positionyourself as an expert in your fieldand connect yourself with otherswho may be able to help you geta job. On the negative side, anoffensive rant, racy photograph oreven an off-color item posted byone of your friends may giveprospective bosses enough reason

to hire another qualifiedcandidate.

Schmitt says the increasinglycomplex nature of marketingyourself through social networksmakes it necessary for colleges toteach students the best methods forusing them. In his classes atWestwood College, which offersboth on-campus and onlinedegree programs, social mediatraining is just as important astraditional job training techniqueslike practice resume writing andmock interviews.

Schmitt offers the following socialmedia tips to give yourself the bestchance of getting the job you arehoping for:

• Audit all your social mediaprofiles to make sure there aren'tany posts or pictures you wouldn'twant a potential employer to see.

Assume guilt by association –delete any offensive posts by yourfriends and hide them if they have

a habit of posting questionablecontent on your profiles. After youare done, Google yourself tomake sure there's nothing hangingout on the Internet you might haveforgotten about from an oldaccount or from somethingsomeone else has posted.

• Demonstrate knowledge ofyour profession. Repostinginteresting articles you comeacross relating to your fielddemonstrates knowledge andpassion. Use your LinkedIn profileto share your experience andexpertise, and post anything ofinterest that you may haveauthored on all your social mediaprofiles.

• Make connections. LinkedIn isgreat for connecting with oldteachers and other professionalcontacts. If you had a goodrelationship with a teacher orformer coworker, ask him or her towrite a recommendation that you

can post on your profile. Connectwith those that you meet at jobfairs or industry events.

• Learn about your futureemployers. Follow companies forwhich you might eventually like towork so you can build yourknowledge base about thecompany. Following the Twitter,Facebook and LinkedIn feeds ofcompanies and professionalorganizations is also a great wayto learn about job openings - andyou can mention that you learnedabout the opening through socialmedia to show that you're adept atusing these networks.

"Some may lament that byaccessing your profiles, employerscan dig farther into your personallife than you would like," saysSchmitt. "But these platforms giveyou an unprecedented opportunityto market yourself to prospectiveemployees and make connectionsto other professionals."
