With the people of summer comes festivals, and for Drysdale it’s the Festival of Glass that will inject life into the town on February 17.

We chat with organiser Doug Carson and exhibitors Mark Edwards and David Hobday to see what it is that makes the festival – and the medium – so special.

The prevailing south south-easterly airflow has kept most days pleasant this summer but a pattern of warm Thursdays has ensured the coast has run hot, too.

With this in mind, we have advice on how to stay cool during the warm weather and conserve energy by minimising the use of air conditioners and energy-saving pool and spa pumps.

Sunny days have meant no let up in the building industry, and we chat to Cavalier Homes’ owners Rob and Lisa Clarke about

their own renovation project, which has resulted in a superb family home on a Bells Beach property.

As usual, My Coastal Home is packed with designer items to enliven indoor and outdoor spaces – this is where the entertaining happens and quality of life comes into clear focus.

“Lifestyle” is the word that sells the region and it is with good reason that master planned, aesthetically considerate housing developments are a feature on the Surf Coast and Bellarine.

Our My Coastal Land section informs you of the latest happenings on these nascent developments. With these estates comes the need for infrastructure, which is why we have a story on the opening of Barwon Water’s state-of-the-art thermal drying plant.

Better infrastructure requires funding, which is where the G21 Regional Alliance comes in. It has a record of lobbying strongly for the funds to make priority projects happen.

G21’s chief executive officer, Elaine Carbines, gives us some insight into her life through the five favourite things about her home.

The months ahead are some of the best on the coast, so enjoy them wherever you are with the summer edition of My Coastal Home.

Welcome to the sixth edition of

The rain stopped months ago, the earth has a summer crust and the area has come alive with hordes of holidaymakers making the most of the toasty coast.

Being exposed to hundreds of design ideas as the owners and operators of Cavalier Homes West Coast, Rob and Lisa Clarke knew exactly what they wanted to achieve with the renovation of their Bells Beach home.

The couple and their four children – Nic, 17, Caitlin, 15, Tom, 14 and Daniel, 10 – wanted a place to come together as well as room to relax alone.

They needed somewhere to entertain up to 80 guests and enough space for their menagerie of horses, chickens, a parrot and much-loved dog Lennie.

The original 12 square house on their five acre block was the second residence ever built between Anglesea and Torquay, and is now a sprawling five bedroom, two bathroom family retreat, complete with a basketball half-court, half-pipe, separate kids retreat and sweeping bush views.

“It’s crazy busy in here, everyone is so active with footy, cricket, surfing, basketball, netball, skateboarding, horse riding and karate – it’s a mad house but we like it, it works for us,” Lisa said.

It’s a boisterous and bustling house full of lively personalities and the Clarkes have succeeded in creating a hard-wearing and robust space without compromising on quality or style.

The family spend most of their time at home congregating in the open kitchen, living and dining area, which is framed by a hand-cut, recycled bluestone wall.

Lisa said installing the wall has been a labour of love, with only half a square metre laid per day but now most of the family credit it as their favourite part of the home – except Daniel, whose favourite thing about the renovation is not having to sharing a room with Tom any more.

Oversized Caesarstone bench tops and a huge pantry maintain practicality in the kitchen, but it’s the unencumbered view of the horses and bush and the Esse wood stove that take centre stage.

The house can’t be connected to mains gas, so Rob and Lisa had to get creative when it came to their oven and cooktop.

Upon finding the wood stove they knew it would be functionally and aesthetically perfect for them, and it has already proven its worth by not only cooking the perfect Christmas roast for 16 guests, but also providing hot water for the hydronic heating system.

The house is centred on a giant, outdoor entertainment area, decked with the same Blackbutt hardwood flooring that is throughout the house, continuing the flow from indoors to outdoors seamlessly.

and several living areas provide access to the deck, and Lisa said it was important for them to have an outdoor space that felt as much a part of their home as the house itself.

They have used colours to further merge the house with its surrounding landscape, choosing a natural interior colour palette and a grey-blue exterior paint to match the bluestone features indoors and the blue gums they have planted in the garden.

Although the family only moved into the house officially in December, once the deck was complete they wasted no time enjoying it, with Rob throwing up a marquee to mask the construction and hosting a 40th, a 70th and a wedding.

As a qualified builder, Rob was directly involved with most phases of the renovation, working in conjunction with local tradesmen who he said they couldn’t thank enough for the hard work and extra hours they put in.

This is the second renovation by the

Clarkes. While they were happy to take the process quite slowly, after five years working on the house and living in what is now the guest house, Lisa said the time had come to complete the project and move in.

“All the kids were getting injured playing sport and two of them were on crutches and finding it really hard to get around, I just said ‘alright, let’s just do this and get it done’,” Lisa said.

“It can be tough at times but during renovations you get to live in the house which gives you a good feel for the place and what is working, what’s not and what changes need to be made.”

Once the final finishing touches are put on the project that’s dominated their spare time for over half a decade, Rob said he’s not quite sure what the pair will do with themselves.

“I really have no idea – what do people that have finished houses do on weekends?”

thinking outside the squareCoffee tables need a lot of thought. Once it was quite acceptable to place a rectangular coffee table in the centre of the room like a roundabout, pop a single vase in the centre and maybe some flowers. Growing up in the UK, at a young age I wondered why the coffee table was always way out of reach when sitting on the sofa – and we always drank English breakfast tea, as coffee was something Americans drank.

Why did we call it a coffee table? Obviously it wasn’t a decision by the English or the Chinese because we would be calling it the “tea table”.

Fortunately, we have progressed. Now there are endless possibilities. I like to think outside the square when it comes to coffee tables.

I find it far more practical to have a grouping of smaller tables. This means every guest will have a spot to place their “coffee”. It also gives you a perfect opportunity to add interest to the room, to mix things up, textures and colours, heights and shapes.

For those of you who prefer to have a large coffee table as a focal piece to display interesting accessories, consider two smaller identical coffee tables side by side; repetition creates style. Accessorise with

books and special objects. Use accessories of varying height and

scale, this will provide visual interest, but remember accessories on a coffee table need to look great from any angle. Accessories arranged in a decorative tray can easily be moved to use the coffee table in different way.

There are many materials available. Timber creates a warm feel, colourful wire shouts relaxed and fun, marble and glass add a more sophisticated feeling.

But for me at the moment, for function and style it’s groupings of small tables, the old nest of tables re-designed, unusual shapes and mix-matched colours.

When you’re tired of them in the living room, they are perfect in a bedroom or even the bathroom.

of customer desireCustomers’ need of a statement lighting piece to complete the interior design phase of their home evolution was behind Lightingetc’s beginning.

In a way, Lightingetc was “requested”. For quite a while now, Livingetc has been

displaying a selection of pendants over dining tables to create a “home” feel.

It soon became apparent that there was a need for that statement lighting piece to complete customer’s homes.

Sue and I both knew from experience that the dreaded drive up the highway to Melbourne and visiting shop after shop, then finally settling for something not quite right, was not exactly ideal.

Could we open a small boutique style shop that was full of fantastic lighting?

Maybe even have interior designers on hand to help?

And even an electrician to help with the technical side?

The relocation of the hair salon next door

to Livingetc was the green light we needed: today we have just what I have described.

We have some customers saying “thank you” when they walk in and others expressing disappointment because they have just finished their lighting fit-out and have only now discovered Lightingetc.

When happy customers return with pictures of their chosen lights in situ it is very satisfying.

Struggling to imagine what your chosen lights might look like in your home? Take it home and try it!

Can we extend the cord on that light to be hung in the stairwell, certainly! What colour cord would you like?

Livingetc is a hard act to follow as our regulars would no doubt agree, but please come and put our new venture to the test. You won’t be sorry.

coastal energy

If you don’t already have insulation in your ceiling, make it a priority. It is relatively cheap and provides significant benefits. An insulated home can be 5-10 degrees cooler and homes in the Surf Coast should have at least R3 insulation in the ceiling.

Shading windows from the hot summer sun is important. External blinds can reduce heat gain through windows by as much as 75 per cent. Shade cloth or other forms of shading across a window will be effective.

Check all exterior doors for air leaks and weather strip as needed. Buy a couple of humble “snake” draught stoppers.

Consider sealing open fireplaces when not in use during summer. The chimney acts as a draught funnel with the cooler air in the room drawn up the chimney and replaced by warm air from outside, entering the room

through gaps around windows, under doors, through wall vents.

Consider sealing off wall vents. These allow warm air in or cool out.

Seal any air leaks in exterior walls and around windows with caulk.

Close the curtains, drapes or blinds on windows facing north, east or west on sunny days.

Consider changing your incandescent and halogen globes for the energy efficient, long lasting compact fluorescent type. Halogen globes generally use 50 watts of power, compact fluorescent globes range from 8 to 18 watts.

Summer’s hot weather has arrived and here are some tips to have a more comfortable home and yet reduce your power bills.

Window films are environmentally friendly and offer a negative carbon footprint thus helping to make homes more energy efficient.

Films block more than 99 per cent of harmful UV rays – saving furnishings and floors from fading, and also helping to prevent ageing, skin cancer and damage to eyes, which is important for every member of your family including beloved pets.

With 35 years experience as a designer and builder of fine homes and 15 years experience of tinting windows locally, Vinnie from Torquay Tinting is well qualified to find solutions that work.

Vinnie advises people honestly and will make sure the appropriate film is applied to a very high standard, minimising summer sun and maximising winter sun.

Window films offer far more value than many other products designed to reduce energy heat gain through windows.

Creating a consistent and neat appearance, films allow natural lighting while reducing hot spots and reducing glare including on television and computer screens.

Window films are an easy, affordable answer to reduce energy bills and make your home more sustainable and more pleasant to live in.

Most people are pleasantly surprised with all the extra benefits provided by film and wonder how they ever lived without it.

As Vinnie is hands on with all aspects of his business you will get sound professional advice and an obligation free measure and quote so phone Vinnie on 0419 304 610.

Try tinting your windows and become another local who has experienced a Torquay Tinting transformation and join the growing list of very satisfied customers.

Sands through the hourglass traverse their own body, the liquid hourglass also flows along itself, a glacial movement mirroring water. Adjectives for glass and water describe each other, each a metaphor for the other – clear, cloudy, shiny, dark, pellucid, vitreous, translucent, diaphanous, turbid, glassy.Every coastal town has a festival, and perhaps the success of Drysdale’s Festival of Glass can be attributed to the fact that the slightly inland town – as far as “inland” can be used to describe any place on the Bellarine – claims the coast through this solid, liquid medium.

coastal festival

Point Lonsdale glass artist David Hobday will be exhibiting at the festival, and his pieces explicitly acknowledge this connection. The former fisheries researcher, who spent 30 years working at the labs in Queenscliff, now devotes himself full-time to producing pieces that reflect aspects of the coast and ocean.

“I snorkel a lot and walk along the beach every morning,” he said.

“Glass is a great medium to express the marine environment.”

At the moment he’s working on thick blocks

of glass embedded with shells and other miscellany from the sea, and shaping the blocks to create bubbles within them to further capture the underwater world.

“Lots of people work not to have bubbles in their glass but I’m working hard the other way.”

The fusion of glass and water has another corollary in the shifting tidal line where water and sand merge.

“It’s the silica in sand that is the main component in glass. You see how it’s all connected.”

Hobday walks this tidal path every morning, the glass beneath his feet, collecting shells to use in his most recent project.

“The shells I pick up on my walk in the morning, but for fish I make moulds from fish bought in the fish shop.”

Local business Wathaurong Glass is also exhibiting at the festival.

The business name acknowledges the connection between water and glass – the Wathaurong tribe that inhabited the Bellarine and Surf Coast region prior to white settlement

were known as “the water people”.Wathaurong Glass owner Mark Edwards

attributes the popularity of the festival – now in its third year – to the “ohhh factor” people experience when they arrive.

“The festival is going from strength to strength. I’ve got to take my hat off to Doug Carson, who came up with the idea – he and the committee have done fantastically well.

“The Festival of Glass beings people from all around the peninsula and even the state.

“It’s something that every coastal town has – a festival – and Drysdale needed something like that. It’s given Drysdale life.

“There’s gathering interest in the festival and in years to come I’ve no doubt that if the festival continues to grow there’s the potential for someone to have a glass shop in Drysdale.”

Last year, hundreds attended the festival and Edwards attributed its perhaps surprising popularity with glass’s versatility as a medium.

“You can do so much with glass. It’s so

versatile as a medium.“Everyone walks into a house and doesn’t

really take notice of the windows and doors but when people get to the festival they go ‘ohhh’ when they see all the different things it can be used for.

“It’s got a whole lot of that ‘ohhh’ factor where people say ‘I didn’t realise it could be used that way’.”

Wathaurong Glass will be displaying glass art including bowls, platters and art panels as well as setting up a kitchen display with a bench top, cupboards and splashback.

“Our glass art is based around local Aboriginal motifs of wind, fire, rain, waterholes.

“Simple images of circles, crosses and lines show peoples’ journeys and travels and can tell peoples’ lives and stories.

“We also do sea themes if people don’t necessarily want culture on their glass. We’re a commercial business so when we find something that works, we fine tune it.”

Festival of Glass committee chairperson Doug Carson, who began the festival with the Drysdale and Clifton Springs Community Association, said he didn’t know much about glass when he first tabled the idea a few years ago.

“I didn’t know much at all about it, I know you can drink out of it and watch windscreen wipers go up and down on it. It’s been a good challenge to get it up and running.

“When we first came up with the idea we put the feelers out and found that glass had a big influence on the Bellarine with lots of little ideas, artists and businesses.”

Carson said this year’s festival had a good range of entries among the more than 60 demonstrations, exhibitions and competitions, including a raffle with $1,800 worth of items up for grabs.

“We’ve got about eight new exhibitors coming in. There’s a lady who will demonstrate how to make glass beads in a microwave oven. Most people need a kiln but this lady has developed a new approach.

“I’m very excited about that and we have several other people coming in to do bead lighting and other demonstrations.”

Carson said that not really knowing anything about glass had helped in making the festival expansive.

“Not knowing anything means I don’t have any favourites to pick and choose from, so if it’s anything to do with glass, we do it. It’s

not just about art and jewellery; it’s about everything to do with glass.”

The uses for glass are seemingly never-ending and Carson has an eye on the future.

“In 10 years you’ll be watching your speedo in the windscreen. There’s so much futuristic technology out there that’s not readily available.

“It would be great to attract exhibitions on those uses of glass in coming years.”

The Drysdale Festival of Glass is on Sunday February 17 between 10am-4pm at the Bellarine Sports Centre in Drysdale.

On Saturday February 16 at 6.30pm, a dinner, bottleneck slide guitar performance and glass art auction will be held at Harvester Moon Café.

coastal style

A stylist’s guide to buying

1. Firstly, you need to measure up your space and think about the size you’d like. Consider the proportions of your room and be careful not to over or under fill the space. Take measurements of the room and the proposed sofa size.

2. Secondly, think about the style of sofa you’d like. Do you want a two seater, three seater, four seater, left chaise, right chaise, modular, ottoman, single chair? Consider the features you like, including back height, arm width, seat depth and cushion style – many of these elements can be customised to suit your needs!

3. Next you need to consider how you’ll use the sofa. Think about the style of your room – is it formal, informal or for family use? Take note of your seating habits too! Are you a “lounger” or do you like to put your feet up? How many people need to sit, and are they elderly or young children?

4. Now for the fun part – the design! Consider what type of cushions you like – soft, medium or firm. Is there a particular type of fabric that you like, and what colours, patterns and textures work into your current and future décor plans. Also think about the finishes, such as feet – do you prefer metal or timber, or none at all?

5. The final consideration is budget. Are you looking to invest in a high quality, custom made sofa, or is it a lounge to tide you over until the kids move out? Do you want a 10 year structural guarantee and Australian Made Quality? Can you afford the lounge of your dreams right away, or would you prefer to pay it off gradually?

Most of us like to indulge in a little relaxation time on the sofa every week, whether it’s putting our feet up after a long day at work, or taking some time out to watch the evening news with the family.

Summer 201318

Chris Williams of insideout in Geelong said that for a piece of furniture that is used so often, it’s surprising how many people complain that theirs isn’t right.

“We find that a lot of people come into our store, slightly overwhelmed with the number

of sofa options available out there. They often need some pointers to help them focus on what will really suit their décor, as well as their lifestyle.

“This is why we developed a list (see below) of pointers for buying the perfect sofa.”

coastal pools & spas

For larger pools, multiple spa jets, water features or in floor cleaning systems, AstralPool have developed the Viron P600 eVo, a larger capacity pump with an impressive 600 litres per minute flow rate.

Unlike so many complicated appliances today, Viron eVo has been carefully designed for ease of operation. Three programmed speeds are factory preset and will suit most pools and most applications.

Each speed, however, is able to be adjusted with a simple press of an up or down button. Operation is intuitive and user friendly as possible. Increasing or decreasing the speed of a pump simply changes the flow rate by the same rate.

However, the actual energy used to change the speed and flow varies dramatically.

Halve the speed of your pump and the flow rate will also halve but the energy consumed drops by more than 85 per cent.

Compared to conventional single speed pumps, the Viron eVo pump will save between $700 and $1,200 every year in operating costs.

Viron eVo pumps reduce energy consumption by up to 90 per cent and effectively reduce greenhouse emissions by up to 90 per cent (when power supplied from coal fired power plants).

Find out more about Viron eVo pumps at Gordon Avenue Pools.

AstralPool, Australia’s leaders in energy efficient pool pumps, have released the next stage in energy efficiency. Viron eVo Pumps are a range of fully variable speed energy efficient pumps to suit all pool sizes, filtration systems and your budget.

Installing a new Pool or Spa?Installing a new pool or spa is an exciting adventure. It involves a number of specialised trades and techniques, Laws and regulations to abide by. For these reasons, make sure you choose a reputable and qualified licenced builder. Ensure your requirements are met. Ask yourself “how often do I want to clean my pool?” If the answer is not often, ask about our Vantage infloor cleaning system – for a pool that cleans itself.

This highly efficient spa heater can provide up to 4.4kw of free energy and can offer heating costs from as little as 20 cents per day.

Gas hybrid heating can cost up to 50 cents every time you wish to use your spa.

Due to its superior cost efficiency, the Dualcore heat and cool pump can constantly maintain your desired water temperature ensuring your Sapphire spa is always ready to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Dualcore system is also economical to purchase and cheap to install; it doesn’t

require any electrical connection of its own, it connects directly into your spa.

The Dualcore heat pump features a dedicated interface for seamless integration to our PowerSmart Control System, revolutionising spa temperature control.

We can now offer both automatic heating and cooling of your spa water, from 10 degrees to 40 degrees, all conveniently controlled via the spa-side touch pad.

For more advice on how you can reduce the running cost of your pool or spa, contact Gordon Avenue Pools on 03 5221 3422.

Furniture and homewares retailer Vast Interior has opened its first gallery concept store in Newtown, Geelong.

Perfect for home décor enthusiasts, professional designers and new home owners alike, the new Vast Gallery store creates a completely immersive experience into the world of home fashion and sustainable style.

Vast founder Ross Clayton said Vast Interior has always represented the best in sustainable table craft, timber furniture engineering and the special culture of unique and interesting finds.

“This concept allows us to offer a complete showcase for our latest on-trend products, globally sourced cutting edge designs as well as a creative aspiring setting for our customer.”

With the vision to create a unique lifestyle and shopping destination, the owners of Vast Gallery, Rowan and Debbie Kent, secured a unique heritage building (the old Collins wool store) for the first gallery concept store.

Once a designated port for the wool industry, the Newtown district is home of industrial style character buildings.

The heritage attributes provided an apt setting for Vast’s edgy collection of new age industrial style ranges.

“Much respect has been given to the beautiful heritage nature of the building with careful selection and display of each furniture collection to ensure an historical element and feel remains,” Rowan said.

With 600 square metres of floor space the new store will also feature additional unique designs from new international suppliers.

Rowan and Debbie said the Vast Gallery Store will provide customers the opportunity to discover the artistic home decor pieces within a retail yet homely environment.

With a product gallery featuring Vast’s newest core range items, the room set ups have been designed to highlight and demonstrate the exceptional variety on offer at Vast.

“Unlike our first Vast store at Grovedale, where we created a sense of discovery with a bustling collection of interesting pieces our new gallery layout in Newtown features

specific rooms and styles including a formal dining room, sitting room, a quirky retro-inspired two-level loft wing and a designated area to browse Chinese Antiques,” Rowan said.

Just a few months ago Rowan and Debbie were in India watching their latest handpicked items being packed and prepared for shipment into the new store.

“The store will be brimming with new stock, from industrial stools, art and artefacts to new our new contemporary swivel chairs.

“We wanted to create an engaging experience for passionate home design trendsetters, families, shoppers and those looking for a touch of global or personal style in home fashion.”

Local Artist Hilda Russell will be featured exclusively in store and further local artists works will be commissioned to maintain the local creative vibe the precinct is renowned for.

Customers will also have the opportunity to select and coordinate product selections in the designated areas with the vision to further develop a design consultation and décor arm of the business in 2013.

According to Debbie, the moment you enter Vast Gallery on Latrobe Boulevard in

Newtown the warmth and ambience of the building soothes your soul.

“With so many possibilities to bring that point of difference to Geelong, the building lent itself to our unique Vast style.

“Geelong (people) needed to have the opportunity to forgo the travel to Melbourne to search for that special piece; it is here now at Vast Gallery and Vast Interior.

“Rowan and I have travelled to the far corners to bring to you something that will make you smile, to make your home have that wow factor.

“Old doors that we sourced in India are now buffets in our store; made with such passion and pride they take your breath away.

“The only thing that isn’t at Vast Gallery is over inflated prices – we don’t mark it up to mark it down.

“No sales – just staff that are as passionate about the product as Rowan and I. We welcome you to visit the new Vast Galley store in Newtown and also we love to see your smiling faces at Vast Interior, Grovedale and Point Cook.”

The new Vast Gallery store is open seven days and is located at 510 Latrobe Boulevard, Newtown, Geelong; phone 03 5244 2244.

coastal energy

As a lifelong Surf Coast resident and a member of the Surf Coast Energy Group since its inception in 2007, he is extremely passionate about his local environment and assisting the community in becoming more energy efficient.

Lewtas recently installed solar panels at Torquay’s Danawa community garden in conjunction with Duncan McMillan of Solar Access Group and donated $200 to the project.

He said he was pleased to help the local community make positive, sustainable changes in any way he can.

“Duncan and I want to see as many of these systems go in as possible, big or small, residential, business or community group, we’re happy to get behind projects like this.”

Torquay-based Green Energy Options

makes the switch as easy for their customers as possible by organising connections and government incentive rebates.

Lewtas is a Clean Energy Council designer and he said now is a great time to make the switch with solar prices halving in recent years.

He said solar panels add value to your property and offer more independence from energy companies.

He said there is a vast range of solar options available now and creating an energy efficient home at even an entry-level price is achievable.

For more information on making positive changes to your energy consumption, contact Aaron on 0402 931 872, email [email protected] or visit greenenergyoptions.com.au.

The thermal drying facility provides an environmentally friendly answer for managing waste by-products by converting biosolids – a by-product of the sewerage treatment process – into nutrient-rich farm fertiliser.

The project has been a huge undertaking with initial investigations into the project beginning 13 years ago.

The $77 million plant was opened at the Black Rock water reclamation plant by the Minister for Water Peter Walsh and Barwon Water chairman Dr Michael King who said the facility adds considerable value to the environmental precinct.

The need for the plant was established as the production of recycled water at Black Rock created a large volume of wet biosolids, yet there was not a sustainable system for drying and recycling in place.

The on-site drying facility at Black Rock allows biosolids to be efficiently dried for reuse, and has eliminated the need to transport them to a Werribee treatment plant for air drying, saving time and transport costs.

“This new facility closes the loop in the sewage treatment process. Sewage can no longer be seen as waste,” Dr King said.

Mr Walsh said the day was significant for Barwon Water in their quest to reduce environmental impact during the waste treatment process.

“The completion of this project is an important step in Barwon Water’s long-term goal to have ‘no waste’ sewerage systems where 100 per cent of recycled water and biosolids are committed to sustainable use.”

The fully enclosed plant will treat up to 60,000 tonnes of waste annually and has been designed according to community expectations that it omit no odour beyond Barwon Water’s fence, and be aesthetically sympathetic with the coastal landscape.

The plant has created 12 jobs for the region and will be operated by Plenary Environment as a public-private partnership.

This is an edited version of an article first printed in the Bellarine Times and Armstrong Creek Times.

Thermal dryerThe largest biosolids drying plant in the Southern Hemisphere officially opened on the Bellarine last month, creating a sustainable solution for sewage by-products.

South Barwon MP Andrew Katos inspects the new equipment at the new biosolids drying plant at Black Rock while Water Infrastructure Group General Manager Peter Everist shows Water Minister Peter Walsh how the equipment transforms waste by-product into agricultural fertiliser.

You can afford to live Since opening its doors to the public in November 2012, Villawood Properties’ brand new Armstrong development in Mt Duneed has blitzed the market.

In what will be the most significant master-planned community Geelong has seen, the wait for premium resort-style living is over.

Land went on sale in late November 2012 and buyers camped on site for up to four days to secure their preferred lot.

Since then, Armstrong has gone from strength to strength and record numbers of people have passed through its exciting and interactive Armstrong sales centre and sales have been extraordinary.

Villawood Properties executive director Rory Costelloe said that the average sales rate across Geelong and metropolitan Melbourne has been between three and six lots per month. Compared to other projects, Armstrong is outperforming every other development in the region.

“In comparison to parts of Melbourne, land is still very affordable in the Geelong region and more and more people are making the move down to the coast. Land has been on sale at Armstrong for nearly two months and already, we have sold over 60 blocks.

“At least 20 per cent of our buyers are purchasers who have looked around many areas in the west of Melbourne…but are just not finding the value there that they do at Armstrong.

“One of our buyers looked at a 350 square metre block at Forsyth Park, opposite

Williams Landing, for $220,000 and ended up buying at Armstrong for $179,000. He said it was so much nicer than Tarneit and Point Cook and so much more affordable.

“We are also seeing a large number of local buyers…who also recognise the incredible value and diversity that Armstrong offers”.

With the only residents club in the region, Armstrong is adjacent to the future Armstrong Creek Town Centre and a 15 minute drive to Geelong. Armstrong gives buyers the best of coastal living, with the choice of seven beaches all within a 15 minute drive.

“The hardest decision our residents will have to make when living at Armstrong, is whether to swim at the beach or in their very own pool at Club Armstrong!”

With over 170 lots already sold, more than 70 residents are currently living in the estate and all agree that the relaxed lifestyle is second to none and surprisingly affordable.

It is one of the only estates in the entire Geelong region that already has the benefits of optic fibre cabling.

Current residents enjoy much faster internet speed along with the quality of digital free to air and pay TV without the

need for a TV antenna.Estate manager Brett Thompson

explained that sales remained strong and potential buyers were amazed at the benefits Curlewis Parks offered.

“We have a lot of people that come in just for a look but when they see the established neighbourhood parks and proximity to all the local infrastructure and bay, they tend to fall in love with the estate and buy a block.

“We have a number of buyers from quality Melbourne and Geelong suburbs that are actually moving here for the amazing internet speeds as they are able to do quite a lot of work from home and therefore spend less time in the city office.”

Works are now in progress for Stage 7 and presales have begun for Stage 8A. Lots range in price from $142,000 to $185,000 with an average price of $159,000.

Another highlight of the estate is the display village which is the largest in Drysdale with nine homes already open and another four to follow in the coming weeks.

If you would like any further information regarding this beautiful $83 million master-planned community, visit the sales office at the corner of Jetty Road and Centennial Boulevard or contact Brett Thompson on 0425 869 940 or via email at [email protected].

The Warralily landscape along Barwon Heads Road and Surf Coast Highway has significantly transformed over the last few months, and with this transformation comes an exciting sense of a new and growing community.

Warralily has released 329 titles, and with over 75 families now calling Warralily home it is quickly moving from a construction site to one of the region’s most sought after communities.

With another 35 homes under construction due to be completed in the coming weeks, Warralily is taking great steps in cementing itself as the place to live.

Warralily sales and marketing manager Sally Steinkrug said the development is entering a new phase, one of building homes and a sustainable community.

“One of the most exciting aspects of building a new residential development is

seeing the community taking shape and people using the spaces we have created. We are working hard to ensure that we are creating the community infrastructure that matches the demographic of the residents and future residents who will call Warralily home.

“Along with the continued civil works we

have completed Warralily’s first playground and park, which is being enjoyed by the community with a number of neighbourhood BBQ’s and events recently held throughout the summer school holiday period.

“The W Lounge has been a great success in bringing new neighbours, in particular young mums together who can relax while

the kids play on the playground. “Our public art sculptures are continuing to

be installed with the next phase to be finished by the end of February and water is flowing down the rejuvenated Armstrong Creek.”

Warralily general manger of development Mark Whinfield said construction and planning at Warralily Coast is also full steam ahead.

“We are expecting that Warralily Coast land owners will begin to receive their land titles in February and after settlement of the land, building of their new homes will commence as early as April.

“This will be another major milestone for Warralily and for future residents.

“Warralily has come a long way since the first stage land release with many involved in delivering our vision for this community focused, sustainable estate.”

The month of January again showed Warralily’s commitment to community, boasting a jammed packed schedule of family focused summer events including moonlight cinemas, a twilight foodies market, kids craft and a party in the park.

Sculpt a Bellarine life

Local artists Glenn Romanis and Mark Trinham designed rustic fencing punctuated by stone peaks using Griggs Creek, the You Yangs and the local foreshore as inspiration.

Their installations welcome residents and visitors to the new estate and lead to a resting area featuring custom-designed seating, made from local timber and stone. Towering above the resting space is a stunning timber and metal sculpture featuring intricate carvings.

Bayview on the Bellarine’s sales consultant Alice Spurr said buyers were excited by the activity around the estate.

“Having the landscaping and artistic fencing complete at the entry of Bayview on the Bellarine is piquing the interest of many potential homebuyers.

“As a result, over 70 per cent of Stage 2 is now sold and Stage 3 lots are also selling.

“It’s incredible how much the new landscaping has transformed the look and feel of the estate. It really is beginning to feel like home to residents now.”

Alice said a lot of Bayview on the Bellarine residents were drawn to the estate because

of its proximity to the bay, plus hidden gems around the local area including fantastic fishing and boating spots, together with wineries and restaurants.

“Bayview on the Bellarine residents love being part of the beautiful township of Drysdale, so close to Port Phillip Bay and surrounding tourist destinations.

“We have a mixture of both full-time residents in Bayview on the Bellarine, as well as those who have bought holiday homes here.

“I met a few residents over the Christmas break who were spending time in their brand new holiday homes for the first time and loving it.

“Either way, buying in Bayview on the Bellarine is a win-win.”

Once a teacher, always a teacher – Elaine Carbines still hopes to make a difference.

The mother of two has been trying to change things for the better throughout her career, first as a school teacher, then as a popular member of parliament, then in a management role with Parks Victoria.

She is now chief executive officer of the G21 Geelong Region Alliance, and is striving to improve the opportunities of hundreds of thousands of people in five municipalities.

She recently sat down with My Coastal Home to tell us what means most to her.

PROFILE Born Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1957. I migrated to Australia with my family when I was 11. I went to secondary school in Mitcham, studied at Monash University and became a state school teacher, and moved to Geelong in early 1993.

Resides In Highton with my husband Shane. We have a daughter, Hannah, who’s 23 and lives in East Geelong; and a son, Scott, who’s 21 and lives in London. I’m keen to visit him.

Politics I held the Victorian state seat of Geelong Province from 1999-2006, and was a parliamentary secretary twice – for education and training, and the environment. I felt compelled to stand up and try to be a part of it, and to be a voice for a lot of issues that weren’t being looked at.

G21 Geelong Region Alliance G21 is the formal alliance between the five councils in the region. It’s very important to work in collaboration as a region, rather than competitively. My job is to continue that work and hopefully advocate for funding for key projects.

Travel Port Douglas is our favourite destination, it’s just got everything. I’ve been there five times in the past six years. It’s not over-developed, like Noosa. We never took the children overseas so my plan for the next 10-15 year is to do a lot more overseas travel.

Twitter My handle is @G21elaine. I only joined two years ago when I started working with G21. We have a very low budget, and it’s a very efficient and easy way to get out what we’re working on. I follow Usain Bolt, he’s hilarious – he posts amazing pictures.

Geelong when the Cats are winning The mood of the whole city, the bounce in people’s steps; it’s worth bottling. I don’t think it can be underestimated. Even if you’re not a not a Geelong supporter, the optimism is almost palpable.

1BOOKS

I’ve just finished Mick Jagger’s biography (by Philip Norman). I read Keith Richards’ biography before that, so it was interesting to compare the two. I think there was a little bit of creative tension going on. I’m obsessed with Michael Connelly, I’m a big fan

of crime fiction. I got his new novel, The Black Box, for Christmas but haven’t read it yet. I really enjoy his writing. Crime fiction takes me out of my everyday life – I know I’m relaxing when I read them, because I only read them on holiday.

GYM SHOESI go to Leisurelink five times a week, it’s only five

minutes from my house. I’ve been going for about nine years. You’ll see me there at 6am with 100 other people waiting for them to open. It’s really good for you, it’s de-stressing. Leisurelink has about 10,000 members; it’s huge. I reckon it’d easily be one of the best centres in the region.

2

IPODIt was a gift for Christmas one year. I’d never had one before, but I just love it. Even though I also have an iPad, I love the iPod more, because I take

it with me. One of the kids set it up, they’re forever putting their music on it. I’m a big fan of U2, Roxy Music and Fleetwood Mac. I’m really excited about David Bowie’s new album and really intrigued about his new single. How about Neil Young coming to The Hill – I couldn’t believe it! Harvest was one of my signature albums in year 12.

4

ARTWORKIt’s an untitled piece from 2007, which was given to me by a special friend who’s dying of cancer. It’s very whimsical and means a lot

to me, especially because she’ll no longer be with us. It’s very atmospheric; at different times of the day it has different lights in it. I love Monet – the whole point of my trip to France was to see his works, and his famous garden and lily pond. His art was a feature of my young life, and to be there and see it was just amazing.

GARDENI like pottering around in the roses and

lavenders, I really enjoy that. Each season is different. There are no fruit trees or vegetables, it’s just a display garden. We installed a water tank, which we didn’t have to use much in the past year but seeing as it hasn’t rained much recently, we’ve started using it again.
