CAKE DELIGHTSVirginia Beach | MyCakeDelights.comPhoto by Shannon Moffit Photography
It’s not a birthday cake—it’s a birthday suit, of sorts. The “naked cake” trend for weddings keeps going strong. From elegant to rustic, these stylish after-dinner delights can be completely nude, with no icing at all, or “half-dressed,” with just a smattering of frosting or a coating of crumbs. Florals, greenery, sugared fruit, a classic cake topper or even macarons provide the accessories for these simply exquisite and scantily clad confections. Here’s a look at some of the most attractive stripped-down sweets from local bakeries.

Foodie FêteMake The Bachelorette Party A Progressive Dinner With Your Best GalsIf your idea of a bachelorette party includes out-there antics, dollar bills, tacky private parts paraphernalia or morning-after regret, think again. There are plenty of ways to keep your last hurrah classy while creating life-long memories with your girlfriends. If you and your sidekicks enjoy sampling top-notch food and cocktails, try planning a progressive dinner that includes stops at three or more eateries in walking distance from your hotel. Here is our guide to putting together an evening to savor in a few local areas:
Comfort Meets Class: We’ve known patent leather to jive in posh weddings (See “Going Gatsby”), but what happens when it’s built into a pair of high-top Converses? These are what we like to call “comfy chic.”
Black Patent Leather High-Top Tennis Shoes by Converse, Men’s Wearhouse, Virginia Beach
Going Gatsby: When there’s a request for black-tie attire, there’s nothing ritzier than a pair of glossy, black patent leather lace-ups or loafers.
Brodie Black Tuxedo Shoe and Bernard Formal Dress Shoe, both by Calvin Klein, Men’s Wearhouse, Virginia Beach
Flaunt Your Style: While you’ve found the perfect suit, your shoes may be itching for a modern twist. Allow your wedding colors to paint your shoes—only metaphorically, of course. Classic Vans make a colorful statement while adding that extra dose of personal style.
Americana Authentic in Dress Blues, Authentic Lo Pro’ in Purple and Authentic in Fusion Coral, all by Vans, 17th Street Surf Shop, Virginia Beach
Imagine Your Groom Gallivanting Down The Aisle In A Snazzy Shoe That Matches Your Wedding Style

From Converse kicks to boat shoes, grooms have been getting creative with their footwear, adding individual flair without sacrificing elegance. Shoes are quickly becoming a way for grooms to complement the scenery, elevate a theme or even express their own personal style. Helping your guy find a perfect pair for the big day? Here’s our nifty guide:
On the Water: When you live in Coastal Virginia, waterfront wed-dings are a given, with our beauti-ful rivers, lakes, the Chesapeake Bay and the ocean. Boat shoes keep in step with the scenery while remaining tasteful.

Coastal Virginia Magazine: What’s the process for when you’re asked to do a surprise proposal photo shoot?Amanda Hedgepeth: Typically I get a sweet, semi-nervous but ambitious email from the boyfriend. They go into when and how they are planning to propose during the shoot. Meanwhile, I’m grinning ear-to-ear at being let in on this surprise.
CoVa: What do you feel is most unique about these sessions? AH: The girl’s reaction! Some girls just cry immediately (that was me, haha!) and some are in total shock ... like they can't quite take it in—it’s adorable! Gian Valdivia: The element of surprise. It’s so cool to capture these moments because you see everything unfold so naturally. Once “the moment” happens, there’s no going back. It’s just me, my camera and “the proposal.”
CoVa: Why do you feel this has become such a trend?AH: I think people are valuing photography more now in a way that they never have before. Hiring professionals to capture quality images and moments is becoming more of an investment, and to me, of course, that’s such a joy!GV: Many couples today have developed a great appreciation for good photography. With social media at the forefront and having many ways to share our life journey, we want those moments captured beautifully for the world to see.
CoVa: What has been your most memorable surprise proposal photo shoot?AH: [The] first one I ever shot at the top of Jockey’s Ridge, [N.C.]. Both of their families were there together on vacation, so they all got to witness from afar and cheer so loudly when they came back down the dune!GV: David is to take Stephanie out to dinner for her birthday. On their way to dinner, David’s brother, Kelly, calls to tell him that he had broken his knee while out running at First Landing State Park. The idea is for David and Steph to reroute to the park and tend to the injured Kelly at our determined spot. As David and Steph walk closer, Kelly hits the play button on a boombox, and “Song for Zula” starts to play. Steph is in awe as she simultaneously wonders where Kelly is as she is saying yes to David!

Who: Kelsey Heafner, insurance specialist, and Kenny Newton, lineman with Domin-ion Power. When: Sept. 12, 2015. Where: Currituck Gunning and Fishing Club, Knotts Island, N.C. Guest List: Approximately 200 guests were mostly local or traveled from Florida, Georgia and Colorado. Where They Met: Kelsey and Kenny met years ago through her brother and other mutual friends. The Engagement: The couple booked a winter cruise, which set sail Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014. “Our first stop was St. Thomas, which ended up being our favorite island. We spent the day snorkeling, relaxing on the beach and, of course, enjoying some rum punch,” Kelsey says. After a beautiful day in the Caribbean, they headed back to the room to get all gussied up for the ship’s “for-mal night.” “Kenny really wanted to go out to take pictures at sunset,” Kelsey recounts. Once they found the perfect spot with the best lighting on the pool deck, they handed their camera to a gentleman to do the hon-ors. As he snapped the photo, Kelsey tells us, “Kenny dropped down on one knee! He said he forgot everything he’d planned to say, but that’s OK because I was so in shock I have no idea what he said at all—it was definitely the best surprise ever!” Wed-ding Wishes: Kelsey envisioned a simple, yet elegant, rustic-chic wedding. “I wanted all of my guests to feel comfortable. We really strived for it to be more of a party/celebration than a formal wedding. It was really impor-tant to us for everyone to have an amazing night dancing the night away and celebrating love.” What’s Next: “Right after we got back from our honeymoon Kenny surprised me with a puppy, Fischer. He has been keeping us busy for sure!” The couple plans to travel as much as they can and spend quality time with their family and friends before expand-ing their own family in the near future.
FINISHING TOUCHES: Kelsey’s sunflower and baby’s breath flower crown was from BudgetWeddingBouquet (Etsy). Hair—Lynn Tilghman, Picasso Salon, Virginia Beach.
GOWN: All the Rage, Virginia Beach. “Ashley is amazing there—she knew exactly what I was looking for and pulled this dress to the side for me to try on first. I immediately knew it was the one!”
AW, SHUCKS: Chris and Jen Pace of the Lynnhaven River Oyster Company provided the raw and steamed oyster bar.
BRIDESMAIDS: Hair and makeup—Heather and Kelle at Mosaics Salon, Virginia Beach. Teal Dresses—All the Rage.
FAVORS: Guests took home jars, which could be personalized with chalk. “I got the idea off of Pinterest. They took a lot of time and multiple craft days with my girlfriends,” Kelsey says.
CURRITUCK GUNNING AND FISHING CLUB: “As soon as we pulled up to this location I knew it was the place I was going to marry my best friend,” Kelsey says.
SIGNS: Grace, Kelsey’s best friend and maid of honor, created all of the chalkboard art.

Videography: Cory Wright, Vision Quest Productions, Virginia Beach. Wedding Coordinator: Ashley Fussell and Danielle Ward with Soirees By Lauren, Chesapeake. Florist: Black Iris Floral Events, Virginia Beach.
GETAWAY BOAT: “He worked on [the boat] up until the day of the wedding,” Kelsey says. “We both love being out on the water, so it was something that we both loved.”
HONEYMOON FUND: The couple set up old-fashioned candy dispens-ers to fund their Caribbean cruise honeymoon.
SPARKLERS: “I thought for sure someone was going to catch my hair on fire! Kenny and I shared a last dance while everyone got their sparklers, so it was a really magical moment,” Kelsey says.
SWEETS: Cake and cupcakes were provided by Gail Ferguson with King & Country Bakery, Virginia Beach. Cupcake flavors included chocolate, red velvet, almond and funfetti (Kenny’s favorite). The wooden sign was purchased on Etsy.
RUSTIC ACCENTS: Baby’s breath-filled mason jars, white Mason jar salt and pepper shakers and bright blue wine bottles adorned each table, which were all laced with elegant burlap and lace. Kelsey’s father cut the cedar wood planks.
CARDS: The custom-made wooden box to hold their cards was found on Etsy.
TREES TO TRIMMINGS: “My dad is a handyman, so he has always built and created so many things out of scrap wood and random trees. [The stumps were] really something that reminded me of my dad and something I knew he would enjoy!” Kelsey says.

Blush Hues, Horseshoes and Bourbon Made for One Dashing Summer Wedding
DapperDerby
Compiled by Anne Leonard • Photography by Shannon Moffit Photography, ShannonMoffit.com
Who: Kristin Farley, middle school science teacher, and Wai Wong, lawyer. When: July 11, 2015. Where: Ceremony at Bayside Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach; Reception at Hilton Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Guest List: Approximately 180 guests traveled from New York City, Phil-adelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago and California. Where They Met: “It was truly fate that brought us together, as I am originally from New York, Wai is from Virginia, and neither one of us ever thought we would be living in Kentucky,” Kristin says. A Yale alumna, Kristin decided she’d check out an event put on by Yale’s alumni association. Wai, an alumnus of rival school Princeton, was at first resistant to attend the func-tion with his friend and Yale alumnus, John. “Despite having to wait out an older Yale alumnus who, in Wai’s opinion, was monopolizing my time, Wai was able to catch up with me at the end of the night to get my number.” Instead of taking his friends’ advice to wait at least 48 hours to call, he asked her out bright and early the next morning. The Engagement: “It happened in Disney World—the happiest place on Earth! We were at Magic Kingdom all day, and Wai had the ring in his pocket.” Nervous the ring would fall out during the rides, he safety-pinned it to his pants pocket as he rehearsed his lines in his head throughout the day. Later, they returned to Disney’s Grand Floridian Hotel. “He had secretly booked us a fancy room at the hotel and had it set up with flowers, candy and pictures of us. When we got to the room, he got down on one knee and proposed. I just remember being the happiest I had ever been!” Wedding Wishes: Since the couple met in Louisville, they knew they wanted to embrace the Kentucky Derby theme. “We wanted it to be subtle, however, so that our guests didn’t feel as though they were at a costume party.” Some of the Derby details included horseshoe seating charms, former Derby winners for table names, a bourbon bar and Wai’s jockey cufflinks. What’s Next: Kristin and Wai moved from Washington, D.C. to Virginia Beach, where they purchased a home in the Great Neck area.

Completely, and perfectly, and incandescently happy.

BOUQUET: “I wanted the bouquet to be a bit ‘wild,’ with a lot of greenery and lots of pink and white colors,” Kristin explains. Palette of Petals in Virginia Beach provided the bride’s and bridemaids’ bou-quets of dahlias, roses, lisianthus, ranunculus, cream spray roses, soft pink astilbe, camellia leaves, foliage, Italian ruscus and Israeli ruscus.
BRIDESMAIDS: Floral robes—Silkandmore (Etsy). Kristin’s bridesmaids were a mix of family members and friends.
BLUSHING BRIDE: Kristin’s gown—“Bobbi” by Augusta Jones. Makeup—Kristine Marie. “To match Wai and his boutonniere, I put one pink orchid in my hair—Wai’s favorite flower,” Kristin says.
BOWTIE: Wai’s bowtie and cummerbund were custom-made by High Cotton. Cufflinks—Deakin & Francis.
SIGNATURE SIPS: While they had seven different types of bourbon, mint juleps and signature cocktails were also served.

MONOGRAM: Stage Right Lighting provided their lighting along with a snazzy, custom horseshoe monogram projected on the dance floor.
HONEYMOON FUND: Shelley, Wai’s sister, gifted the couple with an etched jar. They honeymooned to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for two weeks.
CAKE: Incredible Edibles Bakery in Virginia Beach created their dreamy strawberries and cream cake.
CENTERPIECES: Atop the champagne-colored tablecloths were gold candelabras, glass pedestals and flowers that matched the bouquets. Each table was named after former Derby winners, except for the one she named “Spectacular Bid” after the team of students she taught in Louisville the same year she and Wai met.

Whether you choose a multitude of one type of flower or dozens of different varieties of blooms, it helps to familiarize yourself with different types of flowers. Educate yourself about different arrangements—every flower plays a part in creating the style you’re looking for, from classic to cascading. Also, don’t forget to consider seasonality to keep costs down.

OLD BEACH
EleganceMaria Martinez of Jamie Leigh events got her initial inspiration for this old beach/bohemian-themed styled shoot from a vintage photograph she stumbled upon.
“The photo itself was nothing out of the ordinary, but the color scheme is what drew me in,” she says. “The faded wood, gray skies and muted shades of blue and green really spoke to me. I knew I wanted to incorporate sea glass and driftwood, accented with

varnished metal, oyster shells and some greenery.”Martinez credits an amazing team of vendors, in addition to her hard work, for bringing her overall vision to life. Tidal Bay Collections was able to create custom napkin holders, which also served as name cards for each place setting, and the perfect driftwood Mr. & Mrs. sign. Cereus Art and Fluttering Flowers assembled an ideal centerpiece and helped place the final beach-y touches on the dinner and dessert tables, which were dressed with gorgeous linens from Waterford Event Rentals. Of course, we can’t miss the stunning Privée gown worn by model, Morgan.
“I’m still swooning over Tara’s shots of her,” says Martinez. “I could go on and on, but I really think the pictures speak for themselves.”

TAKE THE Plunge Say “I Do” To Elegant And Daring Dresses With Deep V-Necks and Barely-There Backs
Photography by Tara Liebeck
We know what you’re thinking—they are sophisticated, stylish and, yes, a bit sultry. You’d love to look and feel stunning in a chic gown with a deep-V neckline or open back. But could you pull it off? Absolutely! This trend isn’t going anywhere—and for good reason—so you can and should give low a go. We dared to go there at beautiful Bay Creek Resort in Cape Charles, where the serene setting and breathtaking views of the Chesapeake Bay pro-vided the dreamy backdrop for our love story. Whether you’d like to take just a little dip or really show off that décolletage, we think these dresses will convince you to take the plunge.
