About the dance ProgramThe School of Art provides a broad, community-based dance program with classes ranging from dance appreciation to a pre-professional curriculum. Classes for children, teens and adults are offered in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance. A pre-ballet introduction to dance for younger students covers the basics of movement and music. Fundamentals of ballet and jazz give students the necessary foundation to begin pursuing more complicated and refined elements of dance.

STUDENTS ONLY ADVANCE AT THE INVITATION OF THE FACULTY. DANCERS CAN ANTICPATE STUDYING AT EACH LEVEL FOR ONE TO FOUR YEARS.

About the Saturday Morning Youth ProgramsThe Community Arts Education youth and teen programs are designed for students to discover their potential as learners through art. Students will work with qualified artist educators to explore materials and processes creating and having fun as they challenge their imaginations. Students will experiment with clay, recycled materials and fibers and learn about texture line and color as they build their own creations and create their own paintings and drawings. Students will develop confidence and skills as they make friends and become inspired by art.

Children’s Art Classes — Materials fees are included in tuition for children’s art classes. It is recommended that children bring an old shirt to wear as a smock in class.

ARTBOX I & IITUITION: $230 Youth and teens attend art classes for the entire morning, 9 to 11:30 a.m., providing them ample time to work on creative projects and to experience several areas of art. *Parents/Family members: The Museum of Art opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday mornings if you would like to view our exhibitions during your child’s class time.

Each ArtBox class is divided into two, seven-week sessions. One group meets with the drawing/painting instructors for the first seven weeks, while the other group attends the clay & sculptural media classes. At mid-semester, the groups switch instructors and classrooms so that all students participate in each media. *Please supply your child with a snack each class.

Students spend the semester with their classmates developing artistic abilities through creative instruction using various water-media.

METHODS & MEDIA ILLUSTRATION Ages 13 to 17 (must be 13 by first class)TUITION: $230 /LAB FEE: $70Course Narrative in Illustration – The objectives of this course is to develop drawing skills through in-class instructions and practice. Introduction to the history, theory, and practice of communication through different mediums and methods such as, children’s book illustration, spot illustration, sequential art illustration and story boarding. Students will learn the formal element of drawing: line, shape, value, texture, and linear perspective. Students will also develop an understanding of composition and format, and also develop critiquing skills. Through this process students will also learn to achieve line and tone to arrive to an integrated image and work with a variety of media, including, charcoal pencils, colored pencils, and inks. Students will also be required to keep a sketchbook for outside assignments.

In addition, other aspects of creative metalworking will be discussed, such as forming, cold connections and finishing. The student will come away from the class with a creation of his or her own design as fabricated by their own hands.

CHAINSMust be 18 years or olderTuition: $180/ Lab Fee: $45In this class, students will learn to make classic chain patterns using jump rings. Patterns made will include but not be limited to: Byzantine, Queen’s, Foxtail, flat chainmail, Double and Single Flower, Helm’s and Orbital. Other patterns can be made as student’s request. In the process, students will learn about wire temper, gauges, proper use of pliers and how to properly open and close jump rings.Prerequisite: No previous jewelry experience is required

MIXED MATERIALSMust be 18 years or olderTuition: $180/ Lab Fee: $45This class is a good opportunity for students to explore using non-traditional or unexpected materials in their jewelry. Plastic, paper, found objects or metals such as anodized aluminum are some examples, but students are encouraged to bring in objects and materials that they would like to include in their jewelry. This is a design class in which the group works together to help each other consider various ways their materials may be included in the jewelry, and demonstrations will be given accordingly. Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry

DIE FORMINGMust be 18 years or olderTuition: $295Learn the process of die forming with the hydraulic press to make jewelry scale pieces with three dimensional form. Basic to advanced techniques in die forming will be covered in demonstrations in this two day intensive class. We will focus on non-conforming/silhouette dies used in conjunction with a variety of non ferrous metals. Examples will also be shown of soldering die formed pieces together, mechanism used with die forming to create lockets and small containers, conforming dies and pieces of finished jewelry using this process. Materials will be provided so that students can make their own dies during the workshop as well as use dies provided by the professor. Students will need to bring or purchase at the school; copper, brass and /or sterling silver sheet in 22, 20 and/or 18 gauge.Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry

ADVANCED CLOISONNÉ ENAMELINGMust be 18 years or olderTuition: $195This class is for students that have some experience with enameling, especially cloisonné enameling, as we will dive right into more advanced and exciting techniques. Students will learn how to cloisonné enamel on a 3-dimensional form such as domes, containers...etc. Students will also learn how to apply precious metal foils and how to prepare and use transparent enamels for shading. Learn how to successfully apply enamels to soldered objects. Students will be provided with the basic materials needed to make a finished piece, and other items may be brought to class or purchased at the school.Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry and basic enameling experience

ENAMELING: APPLYING COLOR TO METALMust be 18 years or olderTuition: $195Want to learn the fundamental techniques behind the ancient art of enameling? Students will first learn to prepare a surface to accept enamels, then how to apply the foundation layer, and several techniques for adding details and embellishments. Students will learn how to fire their piece in the kiln, and will take home a finished work of art. Students will be provided with all of the materials needed to make a finished piece, but feel free to bring copper sheet, fired PMC scrap, small stencils, left over glass seed beads, or other items to use as inspiration and decoration. Prerequisite: No previous jewelry or enameling experience required

SOLDERING 101Must be 18 years or olderTuition: $295This two day intensive workshop is ideal for those new to soldering or those who do not feel confident in their soldering skills. Demonstrations will focus on proper soldering technique, troubleshooting common problems, different types of torches used in soldering and show examples of small to large scale soldering for jewelry and metalsmithing projects in a variety on non ferrous metals. Students will have ample time to practice soldering seams in between demonstrations. Copper and brass will be provided for samples. Students may bring their own sterling silver or purchase metal at the school.Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry

In a creative, positive community atmosphere students will develop the skills, dexterity, and coordination required to use the potter’s wheel as one tool of the ceramic forming process. Students will be introduced to various ceramic techniques, processes and aesthetics in a contemporary, social and historical context. The fundamentals of the firing and glazing processes will also be explored. Art offers us a lifetime of learning and exploration, taking this class, students will experience personal growth and artistic discovery. Ceramic history along with the history of craft will be explored learning about clay as both a sculptural and functional medium.

REFUND POLICY: • A full refund of tuition and lab fee will be granted for Community Arts Education classes or workshops when a class is canceled or the Office of the Registrar receives an official course withdrawal form from a student prior to the first scheduled class meeting. • After the start of Community Arts Education classes and workshops pro-rated tuition and lab fee will be refunded based off of the last day of attendance and/or date the official course withdrawal form is received by the registrar. • If a student withdraws after the third scheduled class, no refund will be granted, unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor’s note.• Registration fees are not refundable.• This refund policy covers withdrawals for any reasons including injury, illness or family emergencies. Refunds take four weeks to process. Refunds are issued in the form of a check, which is mailed directly to the student’s home address.
