Bulletin M USEUM OF A RT u P ERFORMING A RTS u S CHOOL OF A RT JULY 2015 T he 2015 Munson- Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Arts Festival— Tuesday, June 30 through Sunday, July 5, a colorful extravaganza of live music, side- walk art, mural painting, antique autos, and much, much more— is the area's longest-running summertime celebration. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The Festival's highlight attrac- tion, the Sidewalk Art Show, re- turns with 250 fascinating works in an array of media. The finest in local musical talent takes the stage throughout the day. Chil- dren will enjoy fun-filled activi- ties and crafts. Special guided tours of the exhibition, Monet to Matisse: The Age of French Im- pressionism, will be conducted daily. Craft Fair New this year, a distinguished group of high-quality arts and crafts exhibitors have been se- lected for an exciting, by-invita- tion-only, outdoor craft show. The MWPAI Invitational Craft Show will be held 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 3 and 4, in the Sculpture Grove. This show will feature unique arts and crafts artists selling a variety of creative art- works including jewelry, glass, painting, fabric and fiber arts, photography, and wood, as well as candles, soaps and body products, and more. Steamroller Printing The Big Ol’ Steamrollin' Print In- vitational, 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, July 3, is organized by the School of Art. Watch as 20 artists get their artwork on over- sized woodblocks, inked and printed under the drum of a two- ton steamroller. Sponsored by Central Paving, SCI Plywood, Blick/Utrecht, Home Depot, and Enjem’s Flooring. Car Show The finest automobiles ever cre- ated will be exhibited in the an- nual Antique and Classic Car and Motorcycle Show 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 5. The fea- tured vehicle is the Corvette. Fashion Comes of Age in the City of Light, 6 p.m.Valerie Steele, internationally celebrated and trend-setting fashion guru, will make a special appearance at the Museum of Art in conjunction with the summer exhibition Monet to Matisse. Ms. Steel is the Director and ChiefCurator at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and is known for cutting-edge scholarship.

For more than 400 years, Paris has remained the center of the fashion world. The Age of Impressionism or theBelle Époque (“Beautiful Era,” 1871–1914) is a crucial time in the exploration of Parisian fashion history. This il-lustrated talk will explore the connections between fashion and modernity, which fascinated 19th-century artistsand poets. The modern city provided numerous arenas for fashionable display, such as the new opera, the boule-vards, and the couture atelier. The image of the Parisienne, the New Woman, and the dandy became iconic figures.

Beginning in the 13th century, Italians developed a rich arts and cultural history surrounding thecreation of presepe (nativity) scenes. In conjunction with the exhibition Italian Presepe: CulturalLandscapes of the Soul opening at the Museum this fall, we are seeking examples of nativity

Each year the Vatican erects a large presepe in PiazzaSan Pietro that is revealed with great fanfare and ex-citement on Christmas Eve. In 2012 the Nativity wasdonated to the Vatican by Basilicata who commis-sioned artist Francesco Artese to create a nativityscene inspired by the Sassi of Matera, an ancienttown in Basilicata, a region in Southern Italy.

Monet to Matisse: Plein Air PaintingFeatured Class in Association with the Central New York Parks Conservancy

D raw inspiration from the luminous landscapes by Impressionistmasters that are featured in Monet to Matisse and from Utica’sown unique park system, designed by landscape architect Freder-

ick Law Olmsted, Jr.

Students will enjoy a customized tour of the Monet to Matisse exhibitionand an introduction to Utica’s Olmsted-designed parks with the CNY Con-servancy. The class will meet and paint outdoor landscapes and scenes onlocation. Painting demonstrations and individualized instruction in acrylicor watercolor are featured. Indoor studio lessons will be offered on rainydays. A materials list will be provided upon registration. Students providetheir own supplies and transportation.
