We are very sorry to inform

you about the passing away of

the father of Prof. Henry Abdil

    Gaffar Espiritu, a board mem-

    ber of the Philippines Jamaat.

    The Senior Espiritu passed

away March 13, 2013 in Lyte,

    Philippines after suffering a

heart attack. He was a Chris-

tian by faith but he strongly

    supported Prof. Espiritu in his

    Islamic Faith. Prof. Abdil Gaf-

far Espiritu was devoted to his

    father and loved him very

    much. For the last several

    years his father had

    been suffering from kidney

    failure and Prof. Abdil Gaffar

    Espiritu took exemplary care

of him. Please pray that Al-

mighty Allah have mercy onSenior Espiritu and grant Prof.

    Abdil Gaffar Espiritu and his

    family the patience and

    strength to bear this great

    loss.

    the Lahore Ahmadiyya Move-

    ment, have also been scanned,

    cleaned and placed online as

well as being printed in bound

    book form for the library.

    Marmaduke Pickthall, the

    famous translator of the

    Holy Quran into English: his

    work with the Woking

    Mission

    (Also see picture with Lahore

    Ahmadiyya Missionaries)

    Pickthall and his association

    with the Woking Muslim Mis-

sion is given in The Islamic Re-

view, February 1922, page 44, in

    the section Notes. This is

    quoted below.

    The following lectures will be

    delivered during the month of

    February at the London Muslim

    Prayer House, 111, Campden

    Hill Road, Notting Hill Gate,

    London W8, at 5.30 pm:

    February 5. Soul in Woman,

    and Islam, by Khwaja Kamal-

    ud-Din.

    February 12. Islam

    and Socialism, by

    Khwaja Nazir Ahmad.

    February 19. A Fallen Idol,

    by Muhammad Marmaduke

    Pickthall.

    February 26. Three Stages

    of Human Mind, by Muham-

    mad Yakub Khan.

    The three other lecturers men-

    tioned, apart from Mr Pickthall,

    were prominent members of

    the Lahore Ahmadiyya Move-

ment who also worked for the

Woking Muslim Mission. Thisagain shows the close associa-

tion of Pickthall with the Wok-

    ing Mission.

Neither are their judges to be

    removed from their jobs nor

    their monks from their monas-

    teries.

No one is to destroy a house of

their religion, to damage it, or to

carry anything from it to the

    Muslims houses.

    Should anyone take any of

    these, he would spoil Gods

    covenant and disobey His

    Prophet. Verily, they are my

allies and have my secure char-

ter against all that they hate.

No one is to force them to

travel or to oblige them to fight.

The Muslims are to fight for

    them.

If a female Christian is married

to a Muslim, it is not to take

    place without her approval. She

is not to be prevented from vis-

    iting her church to pray.

Their churches are to be re-spected. They are neither to be

    prevented from repairing them

    nor the sacredness of their

    covenants.

    No one of the nation

    (Muslims) is to disobey

the covenant till the Last Day

[the end of the world, Judgment

    Day).

It should be quite clear from

this that, far from being a

    threat, Islam is actually the

    guardian of the Christian pres-

    ence in the Middle East.

    These words of the Prophet

    Muhammad should be made

    known to Muslims and non-

    Muslims throughout the world.

    This is the Lahore-Ahmadi

message as well to the world.

    Pickthalls speeches, lectures

    and articles appeared regularly

    in The Islamic Reviewfrom 1917

    onwards.

    What the Muslim Mission

    aspired to

    The Holy Prophet Muhammads

    (s) letter to the Christians. The

    Greek Orthodox monks living in

the monastery at the foot of

Mount Sinai have in their pos-

    session many precious docu-

    ments going back many centu-

    ries.

Their library is one of the finest

in the world for ancient manu-

scripts. One of the most pre-

cious documents of all is the

copy of a letter narrated by

    Prophet Muhammad to the

monks in the year 628. Its con-

tents might come as a surprise

to many, since in this precious

    manuscript Muslims are ex-

horted to protect the Christiansliving within their midst. The

words are so beautiful that we

repeat them in full here :

    This is a message from

    Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a

    covenant to those who adopt

    Christianity, near and far, we

    are with them.

Verily I, the servants, the help-

    ers, and my followers defend

    them, because Christians are

my citizens; and by Allah! I hold

    out against anything that dis-

    pleases them.

No compulsion is to be on

    them.
