RESIDENT PROFILE

Elizabeth and Paul Wright arrived in Sun City Festival for the first time in the spring of 2010 after visiting several other communities in the Valley and elsewhere. They ended up liking it so much at Festival that they sold their first home here after just two years and upgraded to a larger, more fitting home on a private lot. Previously, the Wrights had vacationed numerous times in various states in the southwest, before ultimately deciding to purchase a home here in Festival.

Paul has been a professional photographer most of his adult life, and has owned a very successful studio in New Hampshire for 40 years. In 1990 he hired a Studio Manager, Elizabeth, who became his wife three years later. They have five children and one new grandchild, all of whom live in either New England or South Carolina.

Here in Arizona, their day-to-day lives are filled mainly with tennis (Paul is President of the SCF Tennis Club) and lots of gourmet cooking. They also enjoy hiking, working out, entertaining, and occasional travel through the southwest.

Weight training does wonders for maintaining strength and muscle mass and for boosting metabolism. New research shows weight training may also help in the battle against dementia. Dementia is a category of brain diseases which cause gradual decline in cognitive ability and loss of memory. Alzheimer’s Disease is one of several forms of dementia.

One hundred people participated in a five-year study done by Professor Maria Fiatarone Singh at the University of Sydney. The research compared the effects of computer-based brain training, weight training, and both combined. Since weight training can stimulate the release of hormones which make muscles grow, it might have a similar benefit for the brain.

Study participants did six months of structured, supervised weight train-ing. After six months, significant improvements were measured in cognitive function relative to planning, visual memory and others. Twelve months after the supervised weight training was discontinued, the cognitive improvements were still present. To find out how long the benefits last, researchers will follow the study participants over the next five years.

Of the study participants, only the weight training group showed improvement on the cognitive function tests. The group doing both weight and brain training actually showed a decline in function over the same six-month period. It is believed the combined treatment created elevated levels of stress hormones known to cause a decline in cognitive function.

By 2050, dementia is predicted to affect 135 million people around the world. Aerobic exercise and now weight training have both been shown to minimize risks for loss of cognitive function in the healthy brain and prevent further decline in early stages of cognitive loss.

This event is a great time! It’s almost full contact golf as your competitors egg you on, sometimes in your backswing.

Two-person teams alternate their shots while the high-scoring teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a “Win” (1st Place), “Place” (2nd Place), and a “Show” (3rd Place).
