Summary of Change: ☒ Undergraduate Calendar p. 181, 185, 187, 188, 189, and 193 ☐ Graduate Calendar p. xx

Change to 1000-level limit in BFA - Art, BFA - Dramatic Arts, BFA - Multidisciplinary, BFA - Native American Art, BFA - New Media and BMus to exempt FNTP courses

Rationale:

The current 1000-level regulations (i.e. 1000 level (or lower)) include the additional courses numbered 0520-0525 that make up the First Nations’ Transition Program (FNTP). The proposed changes will exclude the FNTP courses from the 1000-level limitations.

The FNT program is intended to assist a group underrepresented in the post-secondary education system in attaining further education. With the present regulations surrounding introductory courses, there is a penalty to completing the transition program: students are required to complete a number of 0500-level courses as part of the transition, but then they are disadvantaged in completing their degree requirements by violating the 1000-level maximum rule.

The proposed changes will allow students who require the transition program to “count” all of their FNTP courses towards their degree program without penalty. The minimum number of senior-level requirements for each program will maintain the rigour of the programs without unduly penalizing the students. In this instance, FNTP students who may opt to enter a BFA - Art, BFA – Dramatic Arts, BFA - Native American Art, BFA - Multidisciplinary, BFA - New Media, or BMus program will not be disadvantaged.

Note: In all programs under degree requirements this is 1.f.with the exception of the BMus where it is 1.e.

Changes: (Include current Calendar entry with track changes) f. Not more than 10 courses may be taken at the 0100/1000 level for credit toward the degree. Activity courses

and courses numbered in the range of 0520 to 0530 are exempted from this limit. Language courses are offered in the 0100-1990 range. Only the first course in the range counts toward this limit in the language subjects of French, German, Greek, Japanese, Latin and Spanish. Type of Change: Degree Requirements Does This Require External Approval? No

Summary of Change: ☒ Undergraduate Calendar p. 91 and 274 ☐ Graduate Calendar p. xx

Clarify the residence requirement to the Combined Degrees BMus/BEd to ensure that a minimum ½ of the BMus portion is completed at the University of Lethbridge.

Rationale:

The current residence requirement implies that transfer students who complete all 20 of their Education courses at the University of Lethbridge could complete the BMus portion in as few as 12 courses (including 9 in Music). This is not a sufficient number of courses for the BMus portion to be considered earned at the University of Lethbridge. The BMus portion of the Combined Degrees BMus/BEd is unique in that it requires 32 courses. The reworded residence requirement clarifies that transfer students must complete ½ of the BMus portion (including the 2 additional courses) at the University of Lethbridge.

Course Title: Studio VI – (Instrument) Course Subject Code: MUSI Course Number: 3648

Course is a Prerequisite/Corequisite? Yes ☒ No ☐ Cross-Listed Course: Click here to enter text.

Details of Change: Change of course description

Rationale: In Music 3648, a “junior” recital may replace the final jury examination as the culminating activity in the course. This allows some BMus/BEd students to have a capstone project in their final studio requirement before entering the BEd portion of their program. Students are permitted to do the recital at the discretion of their studio instructor. The change to description reflects this practice and mirrors the description for Music 4848 - Studio VIII - (Instrument) where a “senior” recital is required. Details of Change: Change of course title, prerequisite

Rationale: The change of prerequisite gives access to the course to students in the BMus (Music), BMus (DAA) and combined degrees programs to take the course. The course is geared toward those students headed toward secondary school teaching, so wide access is critical. The change of title more precisely matches the goal of the course - to introduce technologies and pedagogical approaches to teaching with technology in the music classroom. Course Title: Data Structures and Algorithms Course Subject Code: MUSI Course Number: 4600

Course is a Prerequisite/Corequisite? Yes ☒ No ☐ Cross-Listed Course: Click here to enter text.

Details of Change: Change to course title, description, prerequisite

Rationale: While the current title of this course is broadly used in computer science, the proposed change of title and wording of the course description provides a stronger connection to music and audio research. Students should better understand the nature of the course and its place to digital audio arts. Non-music students (specifically, but not exclusively, in the areas of computer science, physics, neuroscience and mathematics) may have the required background to take this course. In many cases, it may be strongly-related to their particular major and program of study. The course instructor would be able to identify those students who have adequate background to be successful in the course. Type of Change: Degree Requirements Does This Require External Approval? No

Summary of Change: ☒ Undergraduate Calendar p. 272-273 and p. 297 ☐ Graduate Calendar p. xx

Music 3738 - Music Education Technologies is being added to the required courses in the BMus portion of the Combined Degrees BMus/BEd replacing Music 4660 - Form and Analysis which is moving to the electives list. This change will also be reflected in the Post-Diploma BMus/BEd entry.

Rationale:

Music 3738 is centered on developing pedagogical strategies and curriculum for music education in the high school classroom, in addition to surveying currently-available software and hardware for the purpose of music education. Current and future music classrooms utilize technology to teach music notation, theory, composition/creative work, recording, and a variety of other skills. Students who are interested in a career in music teaching at any level will require familiarity with the tools and pedagogical uses of technology in the music classroom. Therefore the course is being added to the requirements in the BMus/BEd, replacing Music 4660 which is moved to the elective list.
