Music channels

Music channels or television is a type of television programming which focuses predominantly on playing music videos from bands, usually on dedicated television channels broadcasting on satellite or cable. Music channels may also host their own shows charts, award prizes.

MTV§ originally was a music television, is now an American cable television channel

based in New York that launched on August 1, 1981.

§ The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs.

§ Today, MTV primarily broadcasts a variety of reality and scripted television programs targeted at adolescents and young adults.

§

4Music§ is a music and entertainment channel in the UK and is available on some digital

television providers in the Republic of Ireland.

§ It is the only channel within the Box Television Network to be branded under channel 4 and is one of the only channels in the network to be broadcast in widescreen.

§ The channel replaced The Hits. It is available on Freeview, Virgin Media, Sky and Small world cable.

§

The Box § is a television channel in the UK and Ireland. The channel is one of many within the

Box Television network, a joint venture between Channel Four Television Corporation and Bauer Group.

§ The channel mainly broadcasts music videos, although it also features other music-related programming from 4music.

Viva§ a free-to-air German language based music television channel went first on air on

the 1st of December 1993.

§ A consortium of broadcasters and record companies let by Time Warner, Sony Television, Polygram Records and EMI Music, saw their investment in VIVA as an antidote to the “vain posturing power of MTV networks executives”

§ Viva became an immediate success with the audience, while ultimately providing German artists with a music channel that could help expose their music to the German audience.

§ After many years of fierce competition for audience share, MTV Networks Europe eventually acquired Viva on the 14th of January 2005 after it had outran its own efforts for better ratings. MTV today operates VIVA channels across Europe, in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, the UK and Republic of Ireland

MUSIC FESTIVALS

A music festival is a festival oriented towards music that is sometimes presented with a theme such as musical genre, nationality or locality of musicians, or holiday. They are commonly held outdoors, and are often inclusive of other attractions such as food and merchandise vending, performance art, and social activities.

Festivals are great places to discover newer artists. At a regular concert, you go because you know and like that band and want to see it, but at festivals the line-up is varied and really diverse. You can read about unknown bands and go to their set and discover new acts

READING & LEEDS§ The reading and Leeds festivals are a pair of annual music festivals that take place in reading and

Leeds in England.§ 1970: the festival attempted to provide both traditional rock acts and new punk bands. Throughout the

year the festival gradually became known for focusing on heavy metal and rock acts. The line-up settled into a pattern of progressive rock, blues, and hard rock.

§ 1980: during this decade, the festival followed a similar format to that established in the late 1970s, with large crowds flocking to see the era’s leading rock and heavy metal acts perform on the last two days, it had a more varied line-up for new bands and travelling music fans.

§ Late 80s slump: 1988 saw a disastrous attempt to take the festival in a mainstream commercial pop direction, dominated by the likes of Starship, Squeeze, Bonnie Tyler and Meat Loaf (the latter was “bottled” off stage)

§ The future of the festival looked in doubt at this point. However, things were to improve from 1992 onwards as the festival broadened its musical policy and attendances gradually increased.

§ 1990s: Nirvana played the first of their two appearances at Reading; this is also the year the first brit-pop bands such as Suede and Blur started to show themselves on the festival circuit.

§ 2000s: the early 2000s saw a varied but predominately rock line-up, though as the decade has progressed the main stage and radio 1 stage line-up has featured mostly indie artists.

§ Also a continued resurgence in the popularity of outdoor music festivals led to the reading festival selling out more and more quickly every year.
