Pastyme at Celtic Service, Palm SundayApril 5, 2020

The a cappella group, Pastyme, will participate in this special Celtic service as we enter into Holy Week.

This will be the fourth year that the group has provided the music of this 5:30p service. The music will begin with a “Hosanna to the Son of David” and move into music appropriate for Holy Week.

EasterEaster Sunday Vigil Service, 4/12 at 6:00 AM: Music for this beautiful candlelight service is provided by an a cappella quartet. Most of the music is from the Renaissance period. Beginning outdoors, the congregation enters a dark church, progressing through the liturgy, until the church becomes fully lit during the singing of “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today.”

Easter Sunday Services, 4/12 at 9:00 and 11:00 AM: A brass quartet and the chancel choir all join forces to celebrate this festive service. The two services are identical.

Pastyme in ConcertFriday, May 29, 2020 at 7:00

Pastyme was formed in 1999 by eight friends (Anne Rhymer, Wendy Myers, Faye Burner, Mary Donnelly, Jeff Konz, Lee Thomas, Tom Donnelly, and Max Mays) who had sung together in a number of different ensembles, including Mountain Madrigals, a larger non-profit ensemble that sang almost exclusively Renaissance music, both madrigals and motets. After this group ended, they wanted to keep singing together, but to perform a wider range of music while building on Renaissance roots, and also wanted to make money doing it, so a for-profit partnership was formed. Pastyme has always been a double quartet, with two on each part, and has performed at numerous venues in the Southeast, including the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, the Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta, the 2009 Echo Early Music Festival in Asheville and Greenville, SC, and the World Equestrian Games in Tryon in May 2018.

Instruments at Trinity

The 1976 Austin Organ – Trinity’s newly renovated 3 manual, 46 rank organ sings forth each Sunday, leading hymns, lifting spirits, and comforting souls. The dedication plaque reads, “This organ is dedicated to John Walter Tuton, rector of Trinity Parish from 1947 to 1976. Its music will glorify God and bring joy to our congregation, as did he during his ministry at Trinity.” The 4 rank antiphonal Austin organ was purchased from Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church in Durham in 1995. It was revoiced by Daniel Angerstein in 2015. Austin Organ Company renovated the main organ in 2018, adding new pipes and some Walker digital ranks.

The Steinway – Trinity’s majestic 1893 Steinway piano was given by Betty and Lottie Luttrell “to the glory of God and in memory of Alvin Mason Lothrop.” The instrument, once played by Paderewski, is a rare model C, the second largest piano made at the time by Steinway. This historic instrument was restored in 1990 by Frank Fisher, and in 2014 further restoration was completed by John Foy.

The Harpsichord – the Zuckermann harpsichord was built by Frank Rutland for his daughter Anna in 1970. At the time of Anna’s death, the instrument was donated to Trinity by her husband, Dr. John Hoskins. The instrument was rebuilt by Curt Gilbert in 2013.

Malmark Handbells - Three octaves of Malmark Handbells were donated by Dr. and Mrs. William Fowler as a memorial to Marmaduke Burr Edwards, and an additional octave was given by several parishioners. Malmark chimes were also added.
