Murwillumbah East Public School Newsletter Term 2, Week 1 28 April, 2020 Be Safe Be Respectful Be A Learner 45 George Street, Murwillumbah 6672 6781 www.murwillume-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Welcome back! I hope that the holiday break has provided you and your family with the opportunity to both enjoy some down time together, and to recharge for another wonderful term. Welcome back to what will continue to be a challenging and slightly different time for us all. Thank you to you all for your response to our Term 2 learning packages. Yesterday was a very successful first day of continued remote learning. Our teachers very much enjoyed seeing familiar faces from the cars in the work pick up area. Thank you to you all for following the advice, keeping your children home where possible so that we can all return to school as soon as we can. It was announced on 21 April that students will be returning to school for one day a week for a phased return back to school from Monday 11 May. Our school’s planning for this return is well underway and will be communicated in the coming days. This will be distributed via School Stream. School remains open for families of essential workers who have no other supervision options for their children. When our managed return begins, parents are welcome to enter the school grounds, however, we ask that you please adhere to a couple of requests: Parents are asked to kiss and drop and not congregate in the playground. Parents are asked to wait at the grass area at the front of the school next to where the flood affected buildings have just been demolished. Your children will be walked to you. If you need to see the teacher, please call or email where possible. We understand that this is a change from our normal, welcoming and warm procedure and hope that it will be short term only. We very much appreciate your understanding of our attempts to make the school as safe as possible. Scheduled works With fewer students at school, scheduled works have been completed at the end of last term and throughout the holiday break. These works have included painting in our some classrooms, hallways and our front office area. Our canteen stairs have also had a colour change. The roofing in the School Support Unit walkway has been replaced in addition to external painting on the railings. It has been wonderful to have these updates and we can’t wait for you to share them all soon. Mr Tunaley is in the process of a major upgrade of our ‘Hall of Fame’ in the hall with our honour boards as we needed more wall space. We look forward to sharing this new upgrade with you in the coming weeks.

Welcome back!

I hope that the holiday break has provided you

and your family with the opportunity to both enjoy

some down time together, and to recharge for

another wonderful term.

Welcome back to what will continue to be a

challenging and slightly different time for us all.

Thank you to you all for your response to our Term 2

learning packages. Yesterday was a very

successful first day of continued remote learning.

Our teachers very much enjoyed seeing familiar

faces from the cars in the work pick up area. Thank

you to you all for following the advice, keeping

your children home where possible so that we can

all return to school as soon as we can.

It was announced on 21 April that students will be

returning to school for one day a week for a

phased return back to school from Monday 11

May. Our school’s planning for this return is well

underway and will be communicated in the

coming days. This will be distributed via School

Stream. School remains open for families of

essential workers who have no other supervision

options for their children.

When our managed return begins, parents are

welcome to enter the school grounds, however,

we ask that you please adhere to a couple of

requests:

Parents are asked to kiss and drop and not

congregate in the playground.

Parents are asked to wait at the grass area at

the front of the school next to where the flood

affected buildings have just been demolished.

Your children will be walked to you.

If you need to see the teacher, please call or

email where possible.

We understand that this is a change from our

normal, welcoming and warm procedure and

hope that it will be short term only. We very much

appreciate your understanding of our attempts to

make the school as safe as possible.

Scheduled works

With fewer students at school, scheduled works

have been completed at the end of last term and

throughout the holiday break. These works have

included painting in our some classrooms, hallways

and our front office area. Our canteen stairs have

also had a colour change. The roofing in the

School Support Unit walkway has been replaced in

addition to external painting on the railings. It has

been wonderful to have these updates and we

Mr Tunaley is in the process of a major upgrade of

our ‘Hall of Fame’ in the hall with our honour

boards as we needed more wall space. We look

forward to sharing this new upgrade with you in

the coming weeks.

Update on Infrastructure Improvements

Work that commenced during the holidays will

continue early in Term 2 to finalise a permanent

ramp to the hall for disabled access, a roof over the

path to the hall to create a covered walkway, and

permanent fencing throughout the school.

This week work will also commence on improving

the school car park. Works will include levelling and

resurfacing, new line markings, addition of bollards

and wheel stops, and a much improved, covered

student waiting area. Once complete our car park

will be more functional, safer and include a drop off

and pick up area.

The eastern portion of the car park will be

temporarily fenced off as shown in the attached

map to allow work to commence. The car park will

continue to be available for staff parking but there

will only be a maximum of nine parking spaces

during this time. There will be no changes to drop off

and pick up arrangements or bus movements

during these works and contractors will park off site

at a distance from the school to reduce demand on

the car park.

Asbestos notification

Please see the attached works notification provided

by School Infrastructure. There was work scheduled

to take place during the holiday period which has

now been moved to Wednesday late afternoon on

6 May.

Anzac Day Service

Our Anzac Day Service will be hosted ‘live’ by our

student councillors this coming Friday at 12:00pm.

The link will be available via Seesaw.

We ask that students are seated at a table, against

a wall where possible and stay in the one place for

the entire assembly. Students should be dressed

neatly like they would be for school and ready to

connect with their peers.

Our zoom-room is just like the classroom where we

are looking forward to seeing and connecting

virtually with our safe, respectful learners for this

special service. We will also announce our weekly

assembly awards.

Keep safe and well and have a great week of

remote learning.

We look forward to seeing you all soon,

Joanna Henderson
