Volunteer’s Breakfast
Thank you once again to all our volunteers within
our school. It was great to spend brekky with some
of you last Friday.
Kindergarten 2019 - New Start Date
Please be advised that all Kindergarten students
will start back at school on Thursday 31st January
2019. Kindergarten students and their parents/
caregivers should assemble in the Learning Ladder
area where they will be met by their buddies and
teachers.
Best Start assessments will be carried out during the
first five weeks of school during school hours.
2019 Classes
We will start the year by forming nine
mainstream and two multi-categorical support
classes, knowing that new enrolments and
unexpected departures could necessitate
changes to our initial organisation.
We will begin organising:
Kindergarten, Kindergarten/Year 1, Year1/2, Year 2,
Year 3, Year 3/4, Year 4/5, two Year 5/6 and two
K-6 support classes.
Placement of students in the composite classes will
be determined by both academic and social
needs, the number in the grade and the
composition of the class either side.

Christmas Holidays
Yesterday, at our Year 6 Farewell Assembly we were
fortunate to hear from our students just what they
believe Murwillumbah East PS has given them
during their primary school years. It was a very
moving and emotional assembly for many. I have
asked that their speeches be placed in our
newsletter as a way of sharing them with our whole
school community. Thank you and all the best to
our students moving onto high school in 2019.
I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you all a fun
and enjoyable holiday break with family and
friends. We look forward to seeing you all again
next year for another productive and exciting
school year.
Merry Christmas!

Good morning teachers and fellow stage 3 students
of M.E.P.S.
This morning, it is with my great pleasure, that I
represent the senior students of our school, my
fellow school councillors and myself. It is at
Murwillumbah East Primary School, that I have
achieved my first 8 years of learning how to be
respectful, how to be safe and to how to learn. In
my years of practicing these three core rules, I have
had wonderful teachers, a great education, met
amazing friends and much more. And it is today
where I spend one of my last days with all of my
friends, teaches and fellow stage 3 students. One
of the amazing things that has stood out since I
have come to our school, are the teachers. In my
case:
When I was in Kindergarten- I had Mrs. Mortlock for
K/1M; She left the school to inspire more kids but
came back because she couldn’t resist us.
In Year 1, I had Ms Anderson for 1A. She also left
but for different reasons and was the most artistic
and creative teacher that I ever had.
In Year 2, I had Mrs. Nemi in 2N. Who again left
but was one of the funniest teachers at this
school.
In Year 3, I had Mrs. Robinson in 2/4R who was
clearly the winner of most fitness sessions and
creative Monday write offs in the morning.
In Year 4, I had Mrs. O’keefe for 3/4H. Sadly she
has retired from teaching, but was one of the
teachers who had us all extremely-hard working.
In Year 5, I had Mr. Tunaley for 5/6T. he was the
only male teacher that I ever had and was the
most enthusiastic science expert in the history of
M.E.P.S.
And finally in Year 6 I had Mrs. Noble who I
currently give the position of funniest and most
encouraging teacher at our school. But we
never know when she’s going to have us report
to her immediately.
These teachers are the ones that made my primary
school days the best, and I have to say thank you
to all of them.
It is also in class, when things have been very
enjoyable. Like in my favourite subjects, Art and
Sport. Or when we have little sessions when the
teacher gets a little bit carried away with something
and will not listen until they are content. I know not
everyone enjoys these moments, but I do, and
that’s what makes school pretty fun. So thank-you
everyone for making Murwillumbah East Primary
School the best that it can be for me. “Thank you,
for my childhood”.

2018 Councillors Speeches
Good morning teachers, parents and fellow
students
This year has been one of the best years of my life
and I’m sad to leave MEPS, but at least I have great
memories to take with me and more adventures to
come.
I would like to thank all the teachers and all the
MEPS staff, without you I wouldn’t be able to read,
write, spell and all the other stuff you piled into my
brain. You have helped me so much and given me
more support than I thought possible. Thank you for
the opportunities, like State sports, leadership
training, dance and the best excursions ever.
I would also like to say a big thanks to my friends,
you have been so supportive, whenever I’m going
through a tough moment you make it better, and
like only true friends do, when I’m having a great
moment you are happy for me. You make my life
amazing.
And I can’t forget my mum, my dad, and my sister
and everyone else who has been there for me.
Good luck to the councillors for 2019 I’m sure you
will make MEPS an even better place than it
already is. If you’re wondering if you should apply
to be a Councillor in the future, the answer is yes.
There are so many opportunities at MEPS to grow
into the person you want to be, and I encourage
you to fit as many in as you can.
I’m so grateful for being chosen to be a councillor
so thank you to everyone who voted. I have been
part of an awesome team, I don’t think I could
have asked for a better opportunity, or people to
experience it with.
So, thank you MEPS, you have made me a better
person, with a great future ahead of me. I look
forward to catching up in 2019 and hearing your
news.
Have a lovely Christmas and a good break and let’s
go out of 2018 with a bang.

Thanks Ms Noble for all your support throughout this
fantastic Year 6 class. It has been the best! I have
really grown up this year under your teaching and
have learnt so much, not only in the classroom, but
from things you have taught me in the outside
world. I will really miss having you as a teacher next
year. You are pretty smart for someone who has
been here since the dinosaur age!! I would love to
wrap this speech up with a little gift for the one and
only Ms Noble.

From being intrigued by how high the bubblers
spray, to flipping rubbers to agree on something
and ending arguments with the 3-day older kid
saying ‘respect your elders’ we are here today at a
special assembly farewelling our Year 6’s before we
head off to high school. I’d hope we have grown
up a bit. So, for this special year let’s take a trip
down memory lane.
Kindergarten, yep the first time I walked through
those gates daunted by the fact I knew basically
nobody. The only kid I knew, the one that would
play Batman with me in the backyard and the one
who pushed me down that wet slide, was Eli. We
walked into MEPS holding hands and just knew that
this was going to be an awesome seven years.
“The earth is dry at last everybody off!” one of my
favourite memories was in Year 2 when we did
Captain Noah Saves the World as our school play. I
fondly remember getting dressed up before the
show with my textered on beard.
Also, in Year 3 I thought we had the coolest
classroom ever. Right next to the hall, we would
always get to assemblies first. When it was knocked
down and nothing was put there it broke my heart.
Year 5, after just moving in to my new class and
being totally confused by the skeletal system, the
rain came and flooded our classroom. I remember
working under OOSH for about a week. Basically,
there was nothing in there but desks and chairs and
a bad smell.
This year was one of the most amazing years of my
life. As a councillor it made me take on a lot of
responsibility, but I loved every bit of it.
Young Leaders Day is one of the greatest things you
get to do as a councillor. Young Leaders’ Day is
held in Brisbane and over 3000 students attend in
an indoor stadium. It is all about making you a
better leader by the speakers sharing real-life stories
about themselves.

2018 Councillors Speeches
Good morning teachers, parents and the students
of this wonderful school. I’m very sad to say that this
is my last speech as a councillor. Through my years
at MEPS there have been many highlights. Firstly I
would like to thank all of my teachers that have
taught me throughout these years here.
In Kindergarten I had the wonderful Ms Davison. I
remember when I was 5 that I never ever wanted to
leave my mum because I was scared to be away
from her. But Ms Davison helped me through those
tough times and her guidance helped me to
become the person that I am today. Here I am now
at the end of Year 6, giving my farewell speech as a
councillor in front of my very proud mum.
I was very lucky to have one of the best teachers in
the school in Year 3 with Mr Wills! I will never forget
something that Mr Wills asked me to do one day. It
was the day before the soccer gala day and
someone had broken their arm. I knew there was
no one else in the senior classes who was able to
stand in and replace this student. So Mr Wills called
me outside and asked me if I was able to play in
the team. Straight away I said "YES”, I was extremely
happy that Mr Wills thought I was capable of
playing in this team of seniors as I was only in Year 3
at the time.
My Year 5 teacher was amazing. He was very
helpful through the nominations for councillor. Yes
it’s you Mr T. I went home that day and went to my
room and I looked on the note and it said, you are
one of the people who decided to go for
councillor. To be in the running for this position you
will have to give a speech in front of the whole
school. Straight away I said “NO” I was so scared
that if I actually spoke in front of the whole school I
could make a mistake and embarrass myself, so I
convinced myself not to run for school councillor.
But then I thought Mr T and Ms Noble would love
me to have a go at it and prove to myself that I
could succeed as a councillor. When I was in Year 2
I remember hoping that Mr T would be my teacher
in a senior class. Your sense of humour and your
creative mind always make for an interesting and
happy class. You always come up with something to
do even if it fails or not. This is a huge lesson you
have taught me. Thanks for the tips Mr T.
And finally, this year has been one of the best years
of my primary school. Being a councillor has taught
me everything. When I went to the Young Leaders
Day in Brisbane I learnt so much about other
people’s journeys. There were speakers who I didn’t
even know about until this day, and once I heard
them tell their stories, it made me realise how to
push through the bad times and to always hold
your head high.
And Ms Noble what can I say about Ms
Noble..hmmmm..Let me think. She is just as
animated in class as she is on assembly. Every
Thursday I get up really early to make sure I don’t
miss my bus because Thursday with Ms Noble is my
favourite. We do art. I also love Ms Noble’s boot
camp. I have had many great teachers over the
years and they have all impacted on my learning
along the way.
I am looking forward to a new range of subjects
and new friends that I will make at high school.
This year has gone by really fast. We have many
great memories that will stay with us throughout our
lives. So farewell MEPS, thank you for preparing us
for the many and no doubt exciting challenges that
lie ahead of us. Many of us will be overloaded with
emotions about finishing school and looking
forward to year 7 at our brand new school.
“Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!”
“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose”.
-Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
Thank you
Dylan Hawthorne
Wow what a year it has been for all of us.
Right here right now we stand to celebrate the
whole of Year 6 and what they have achieved
during the years they have been at MEPS.
I remember the first day of Learning Ladder at this
school, I remember when I took the first step into the
classroom and then started to immediately cry and
run back to my mum.
In Kindergarten I was in Ms Davidsons classroom
and it was soooo fun, especially all of the singing
and joyful activities we did. I wish that I could go
back in time and head back to Kindergarten but
that’s not possible.
In Year 1, I was in Ms. Andersons & Ms Nemmies
class, I finally got the first taste of doing real work,
but I still had such a good time there.
When I was in Year 2 I was in Ms OL’s class but after
1 term she went on a holiday and we then had Mr
Crowder. In my opinion he is my 2nd most favourite
teacher in the school because we did lots of
enjoyable activities.

2018 Councillors Speeches
The speakers were from authors to cricket players
and even a ’Your the Voice’ winner. But, my fa-
vourite had to be John Coutis. When John was
born doctors told his parents he wouldn’t last a day.
He was born so small he could fit in the palm of your
hand. When he went to school he got bullied really
badly and once he was put in a bin and set on fire.
Now he is 48 and an inspirational speaker, his motto
in life is ‘only worry about the things you can con-
trol’.
One tip I would give to anyone of you is to enjoy
every minute of primary school as it goes super-fast,
the memories you make here will never leave you
and the friends you make will be lifelong.
So, as a member of Year 6 leaving to high school, I
certainly know that I will miss this school very much.
I would like to thank everyone here for making it
such an enjoyable time. Thank you!
Toby Shapland
Good morning students, parents, teachers and my
fellow Year 6 graduates for 2018.
Let me just say, what a journey primary school has
been. It’s hard to believe that many of us walked
our first steps at Murwillumbah East way back in
2012, 7 long years ago. My bag was bigger than
me, my hat flopped over my eyes and my school
shorts were so big they covered by knees and now
here I am at Yr 6 graduation and I will be ringing the
bell in a few days. My shorts fit, my hat is a little
faded and I have grown into that school bag.
There has never been a dull moment at MEPS and I
have lots of memories to treasure. School camps,
pool days, discos, cake staffs, fetes, dress up and
crazy hair and sock days, excursions and lots of
other activities in between. I have also had many
opportunities at MEPS. I have represented Koalas
and our school at sporting events. I have been an
SRC rep and school counsellor. I have enjoyed
public speaking, maths and science activities.
The teachers that put up with me over the years
were: Mrs Watts, she was my very first teacher and I
wanted to her to be my teacher forever, Miss
Anderson did awesome crafts, Miss Nemme – she
isn’t here anymore but most of you would
remember how much fun she made our lessons, Mr
Wills – he was so funny and had a twist at every
corner. Miss O’Keefe, my favourite science teacher.
Ms Robinson and our class went through the flood
together that was a very big year. She made sure
that our learning wasn’t disrupted and that we
carried on as best we could. We even got a new
room.

2018 Councillors Speeches
So in Year 3 I had Ms Robinson. In her class I had a
very jolly time learning as she would just make
learning so fun. I think when I was in her class, that’s
when I started to improve in my academics.
In Year 4 I had Ms Robinson again, but I didn’t mind
at all as I already said she is a great teacher.
So in Year 5 I had Ms Noble. Great advice for all
Year 4’s who might be going into her class next
year, prepare to be doing a lot of fitness! But
besides all of that, being in the classroom made me
prepared for what might happen in year 6.
Year 6….What can I say? It was the best school year
ever! I made so much new friends and enjoyed
doing all the work that was set, it was hard but I
always love a bit of a challenge. The best part of
Year 6 was that I had the best teacher ever. MR
TUNALEY! He was always so nice and kind and
made learning very exciting, every morning I was so
excited to go into class and be taught by the one
and only Mr.T.
So that was my experience at school and learning.
This assembly is very important and I would like to
thank all of my colleagues who made MEPS the
best experience that I have had for the 11 years I
have been alive. 8 of those years were me at
school and those 8 years will never be forgotten, so
to all the Year 6 students and all of the teachers,
staff, office ladies, P&C and Ms Rowsell for making
school so enjoyable I say Thank you.
And I hope to make the best out of school tonight
at the golf club for the dinner.
Thank you
