FEATURES OF COSMIC MUONS
| 2
• Free (already a good point at that time)• Natural• Continuous radiation• Highly penetrating• Propagating along straight lines (on average)
• Hidden chambers in pyramids (Alvarez, 1970)• Volcanology (Tanaka, Diaphane collaboration)

2D MUOGRAPHY AND MPGD AT SACLAY
| 3
If 50 cm long telescope…Scintillator (~1 cm resolution) Micromegas (0.3 mm resolution)
Revolution for precise imaging
• WatTo exp. already elicited interests from IAEA and French Interior Ministry• Other applications in archeological or mining prospections:
tumulus cavity in soil mining cf ASACUSA

BEYOND MUOGRAPHY: 3D TOMOGRAPHY
| 4
• Direct application for homeland security (Los Alamos, 2003)
Many projects in UK, Italy, Canada, China, Russia, France, Israel,…
![Page 5: Muon detection, towards societal applications of MPGD](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062523/5a4d1b147f8b9ab059990ae9/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
3D TOMOGRAPHY AND MPGD AT SACLAY
| 5
Performance with compact (50 cm between detectors) setup
1st goal of DNDO fordetection of 4kg of U
First test on a small part with Lead brick, simple POCA
Detection in 2’ possible
in 2016…
…today
New applications for precise imaging are now emerging if longer exposure… thanks to spatialresolution of MPGD

3D TOMOGRAPHY WITH LONGER EXPOSURE

LimestonePliers Lead brick
Iron structure in the limestone(from Historic Monuments)
Wood board!
Not neutrons, not X-rays… just free muons! And with compact, transportable setup

MUON METROLOGY
| 7
Muon metrology, e.g. deformation measurement of buildings
But can it work with (necessarily) compact instruments?
![Page 8: Muon detection, towards societal applications of MPGD](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062523/5a4d1b147f8b9ab059990ae9/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
MUON METROLOGY
| 8
• Buildings in cities (old careeers, metro tunnels, vibrations, …)• Old monuments on unstable ground • Hydro dams• Bridge (road, pillars)• Tunnel construction (localization)• Landslide• …
Elicited interests from several civil engineering companies

CONCLUSION
| 9
Development of muon telescopes at Saclay with unprecedented resolution
→ muography: 10-50 times better resolutions than existing telescopes
→ using genetic multiplexing => low consumption, cheap, transportable, autonomous
These instruments have lots of applications, existing or new
→ tomography: very compact instruments, transportable for in situ experiments
→ metrology: can now reach positioning at 20-40 m distance, even with obstacles
Elicited many interests in different fields, from government to industryThere is a lot to do, and we are of course open to collaborations!
→ without external trigger (DREAM auto-trigger function)

ADDENDUM: GENETIC MULTIPLEXING WITH PIXELS
| 11
Genetic multiplexing presented in 3rd MPGD conference (Zaragoza)
questions whether it can be extended to 2D (pixels)
→ fully isotropic, no unfavoured direction
→ but virtually impossible to make connections with electronics!
![Page 12: Muon detection, towards societal applications of MPGD](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062523/5a4d1b147f8b9ab059990ae9/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
ADDENDUM: GENETIC MULTIPLEXING WITH PIXELS
| 12
• A practical solution is to multiplex on the basis of 2 prime numbers p and q
l: returning strip pitch (~0.2 mm)px: pixel pitch along one direction

ADDENDUM: GENETIC MULTIPLEXING WITH PIXELS

• Example with 1 and 2 track events (color is time)
(NB: as in 1D, the degree of multiplexing can be adjusted to the flux)
